Having real trouble importing a DVD into PremPro via every known method

A short film project I thought was lost forever turned up on DVD. Long story. It's a fairly refined cut and i want to get it on my hard drive and into Premiere Pro to mess around with.
I have tried converting to mp4 or mkv as some have suggested using handbrake and it either will not import, or it crashes Premiere Pro as soon as I try and use the imported file.
I've been at this since 9 Am this morning and would love some help.
The DVD plays perfectly in any DVD player. The converted mkv's and mp4';s play in QT or VLC no problem.
Help would be grealy appreciated. I'm on a PC with CS5. Not a MAC.

Here's my preferred method.  It's pretty simple and hassle free.

  • Importing protected DVD into iTunes

    Hello All
At the very outset - let me admit I love Shaun T's workouts and I always will legitimately pay for those than have them downloaded via other "unfit" means :-)
So the issue am seeking help on is this - I have bought the DVDs for couple of BeachBody Shaun T workouts (Insanity & Focus T 25). Now I use a MacBook pro which does not have an optical drive and every time I want to do the workout means I have to chug along the super drive, and it feels very primitive in today's time and age. Now these DVDs are protected and there is no way I can import them into iTunes and then get them onto my iDevices, so I can break a sweat even if I am in a tiny hotel room on my tiny iPhone 6 Plus screen (Yes - it is tiny when you are trying to follow those moves on a screen that size while half dead in motion!)
Is there anyway to do this i.e. import those DVDs into iTunes and then consume them like you would with any other iTunes media?
Thanks in advance for your help/suggestions
P.S: Cannot fathom why Beach Body doesn't sell their workouts on iTunes!

Depending on where you are it may be legal for you to backup your purchases. Check your local laws.

http://Handbrake.fr may help if you need different sizes etc.
Just make sure you keep the original discs otherwise it becomes piracy.

  • I have been trying to import VHS video into iMovie via a Hollywood Dazzle bridge.  Did not have trouble until I upgraded to mavericks.  I have a mac book pro, 10.9.1, iMovie 10.0.2.  Says it is recording, but when I go to check, it says the file is empty.

I have been trying import VHS video into iMovie via a Hollywood Dazzle bridge.  I have been successful doing this in the past, but now it is not working.  I have a mac book pro, 10.9.1, (mavericks), iMovie 10.0.2.  Everything in iMovie looks like it is working.  It reads "recording" in the upper left hand corner of the pane while the video is playing.  When I stop the process to check on my clip it says that the file is empty.  The only thing that has changed since I did it successfully is that I upgraded to mavericks from whatever I had previously.  My system is about one year old.  Any suggestions?

    Hey, Clinton,
Thanks for your help!  I was able to go to iMovie 9.0.9 and import video.  I was still curious as to why it didn't work in version 10.0.2, so I contacted Apple tech support.  They were't sure at first as to why it wouldn't work, so they had me delete iMovie 10.0.2 and then re-install it just to see if something had gone wrong when it upgraded.  That didn't change anything.  In the end, they determined that 10.0.2 doesn't support the Hollywood Dazzle DV bridge.  But I have a workaround path from them that I will share so that it's possible to import to 9.0.9, then move it to 10.0.2.
         1.  Open iMovie 9 (finder/applications/iMovie 9.0.9
         2.  Import from Dazzle Bridge to iMovie 9, note which event you are importing the clips into
         3.  Close iMovie 9
         4.  Open iMovie 10 (probably in the dock)
         5.  File/Import Media...navigate to home(this was my name, on the left side of iMovie, under Favorites)/Movies/iMovie events.  Find the event folder that contains your Dazzle clips (tip-try sorting by date modified to look at recent events.)
         6.  Select the clips and import.  Click the blue "Import Selected" button on the bottom right.
You may get a message that some files cannot be imported.  Click continue import.  It's a little glitchy.  It imports your clip, and also makes a copy of it, too.  On the copy, the audio is normal, but the video is choppy.  In any case, you would delete the copy, anyway.
Hope this additional information helps somebody else.  Thanks again, Clinton for helping me!

When importing photo's into Apperture via iPhoto Browser I get 2 Versions of the master as opposed to just one?
    Why is this?
    Are there two master photo's?

When you import to Aperture using this method you get all the versions that iPhoto has - Mster and Edited  version. If you haven't edited the photo then tow possibilities:
A: the photo is Raw and you'e gettting the automatic preview that iPhoto creates on import as well
B: The shot has an auto-rotate tag from the camera

  • Trouble Importing Motion Projects into DVD Studio

I’m in the process of creating a Demo DVD and I was looking to use Motion to create menus and transitions in DVD Studio Pro. Every time I try to import a project I get an “Incompatible Format” error. My roommate’s iMac G5 imports Motion projects with no problems. I called Applecare to get help and was told Motion was bad and to reinstall it. I did and it didn’t work. (It was also suggested that my video card might not be good enough. Doesn’t make sense though because my roommate’s iMac does the trick.) I called back like I was told and was informed by another guy that I don’t have support available to me because the complimentary phone support expired last year. What is the world is wrong? Does anyone have any suggestions? I’m game for a complete hard drive wipe if it’ll fix the problem? My specs are below. Here are the specs of my roommate's computer:
    Processor: 2.1 GHz PowerPC G5
    RAM: 1.5 GB DDR2 SDRAM
Video Card: ATI Radeon X600 XT, 128 VRAM
    Software: Final Cut Studio Academic
    Please help me!!
    ~Thanks

One more thing, I tried opening up my project no DVDSP on my roommate's computer and it worked. His own project worked too. I brought the same files over to my computer (I opened the files both time off my thumbdrive, so they're the same files, not copies) and I got the same "Incompatable Format" error.
I also cannot import Motion projects into FCP either, but both my roommates can.

  • Can't import a DVD into iMovieHD

Please help. I just purchased a new imac and am new to iMovie and iDVD. I am unable to import a DVD that I made using onestep DVD in iMovie. If I click and drag the icon into the iMovie clip sectin it says "importing" but nothing happens. Can someone please tell me how I am supposed to open a DVDs up so that I can edit them.
    Thanks

    Hello,
You need a program that will convert the DVD video into a format that the computer can work with.
    My personal favorite is DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.products.htm
They have various packages starting at $25.
I went with the $25 package, and it does everything I need.
The program converts the DVD video into Quicktime compatible formats that can be directly imported into iMovie for editing.
It also automatically cuts the larger DVD video into smaller files sized exactly to the right size to permit iMovie to import them (iMovie will not import video over 2 GB in size or longer than 8 minutes in length).
The program works great, and does it all in an automated way.
Once it's done, you just drag and drop the clips into iMovie, and do as you want with them.
Note that this will only work on your home movies or movies that are not copy-protected.
If you try to use this on a commercial copy-protected movie, it will not work.
There is a free trial version that you can download and tinker with to make sure you like it. So, give it a shot.
The trial version does place some text over the video to discourage you from just using the trial version and not paying for the full version.
I've found this program to do the job right every time.
There are some free utilities out there. But, they require more tinkering and more knowledge to get the job done. I used a few, and they worked. But, in my experience, they just didn't match the quality of video and ease of use I found in the DVDxDV program.
    I hope this helps.
Let us know if you have other questions.
P.S., if you'd like, go ahead and click the "Helpful" or "Solved" buttons on any of the posts / replies above if you feel they were helpful or adequately answered your question.

  • Is there a way to import a DVD into iMovie where it can be re-worked and then saved as a new DVD?

I have converted several VHS video tapes to DVD's and want to work with them in iPhoto to create better versions.
How do I import the DVD files into iMovie?

This tip will show you how to import your home movie on DVD into iMovie 11 for editing. It will not work on commercial, copy-protected DVDs. (Ripping commercial DVDs is against the Terms of Use of the Apple Discussions).
DVDs are encoded by iDVD into MPEG2, which iMovie cannot edit. So you need to convert the DVD into a codec that iMovie can edit. For highest quality, I recommend that you convert the DVD to Apple Intermediate Codec. There is a free tool called MPEG Streamclip that will do this. You will also need to install the Apple QuickTIme MPEG2 Playback Component.
    Here are the details.
    1) Download and install the Apple MPEG2 QuickTime Component ($20) - available online from Apple.
    2) Download and install MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5 (free).
    3) Start MPEG Streamclip
    4) Insert your DVD into your Mac. If DVD Player or Front Row starts automatically, quit those.
    5) Open a Finder window. Navigate to the DVD.
    6) Drag the Video_TS folder from your DVD and drop it into MPEG Streamclip.
    7) If MPEG Streamclip offers to fix timecode breaks, say yes.
    8) Use FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME to convert the files to Apple Intermediate Codec (or h.264 if you prefer)
    9) Optional steps.
9a) Optional: You can deinterlace your footage in this step, if you like. If you don't know which is best, try a short clip both ways. I usually do not deinterlace.
9b) Optional: If you know the date and or time of the footage, name your file
    clip-yyyy-mm-dd hh;mm;ss
(let mpeg streamclip provide the extension). This will provide metadata that iMovie will use to put the event in the right year and month.
9c) Optional: If you don't want to make one huge clip out of your DVD, you can make smaller clips by using MPEG Streamclip. Move the cursor to the "in" point of the clip, and press i. Move the cursor to the "Out" point of the clip, and press o. Then do steps 8 through 10 and repeat until you have done this for all clips you want.
    10) Save the resulting file in a place where you can find it, like your Desktop.
    11) Open iMovie.
    12) In iMovie, choose FILE/IMPORT/Movies... and choose the file you saved in steps 8, 9, 10.
    13) iMovie will generate thumbnails and you can edit.

  • Trouble importing .mov files into FCP X

I'm relatively new to FCP so this could be a really easy fix. I took a bunch of short video clips (20s --> 1.5 min) on my Panasonic ZS25 and imported the clips to my MacBook Pro (2008 with 2GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Memory and 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor). [I have version 10.8.4 of OSX]. The clips from my camera were in .mts format so I used the Smart Convertor Pro App from the App Store to convert all 80 files to a .mov format. Both the converted clips and FCP X are stored on my 700 GB external, and while I tried to import the clips into FCP X, the program almost immediately froze and shut down. Thinking I "overloaded" (for lack of a better word) FCP X, I decided to try and delete the blank clips that were showing up in the program. However each time I attempted to click on a clip the program crashed again. I eventually was able to delete all the clips, and decided to move the converted clips from my external to my desktop. Once they were moved I then tried to import just one clip from the desktop to FCP X (which is still run through my external). Although it was successfully imported, once I clicked on the file to play it in FCP X the program crashed again.
What can possibly be the problem and what can I do to fix it?
Note: This is my first time using both my new camera (and having to deal with this .mts BS) as well as FCP X.

Thanks Russ, Tom, and Hughmass for all your input. It really is appreciated. Unfortunatly even after moving FCPX to my desktop and converting the .mov files in MPEGstreamclip, importing the movie clips into the program still causes random shut downs. Perhaps the clips are corrupted or something? I honestly don't know, and I'd rather kind of just ignore this problem then keep hashing away seeing as the clips aren't that important (and yes, being super smart, i deleted them off the camera well before hand).
Just to make sure FCPX works, I took some short clips on my Panasonic DMCZS25, and imported them successfully into FCPX and was able to edit together a quick piece. Thanks again for all your help!

mpeg streamclip and DVDxDV will convert DVD VOB files into workable DV files.
Mpeg streamclip is free, and can be found at versiontracker.com
DVDxDv costs $25, and can be found at dvdxdv.com
