Having start-up issues with my 1st gen Macbook Pro

Hi everyone. I just started having start-up issues with my first generation Macbook Pro. It was working fine the other day when I last used it, but today I went to use it and it wont load up to my desktop...? It starts up (grey screen with the little swirly bar under the apple,) then it goes to a blue screen, then my background and dock appear, then (before any of my desktop files even show up,) it goes to a blue screen (that brightens up and then dims a little,) and it just keeps showing this with a little swirly progress symbol (shows when the screen is darker blue, then disappears when the screen is a brighter blue.) I've included a video that I took with my iPhone to show it situation. Any ideas as to what's wrong with it? Thanks in advance!

Safe Boot by restarting your computer while holding down the "shift" key.  Safe booting disables all nonessential processes, often times allowing you to start up when you would otherwise crash.
As of OS X 10.5.6 Safe Boot deletes the dynamic loader shared cache location in the /var/db/dyld directory.  A corrupt cache here can cause the blue screen crash.  Once you restart normally, the cache will be recreated.  This should take care of the issue.

I am planning on buying a new MacBook Pro later this year, but for the meantime I'm not sure if I should buy a new power adaptor, or if this is a problem with my MacBook Pro. Also does anyone know where I can buy a battery in the UK for 1st Gen MacBook Pro.

OWC has batteries for 1,1 generation MacBook Pros and they ship internationally - http://eshop.macsales.com/.
Your best bet for a power adapter is to get one from Apple. Third-party adapters just don't seem to be reliable (or safe). You can also buy a replacement battery directly from Apple, of course, but they're a bit more expensive.
    Good luck,

  • A few questions with SL & 1st gen Mac Pro

Hey everyone. I just got Snow Leopard for Christmas and I've installed it on my harddrive. (I have the latest update as well now) The problem I'm seeing is my EFI is 32bit. I can't boot into 64 bit mode. Is there a firmware or something I can type into the Terminal to put it in 64bit mode? I see all my apps are 64bit in the Activity Monitor. Is it hopeless for me to think I can run in full 64bit mode on my 1st gen Mac Pro? Also, I've noticed to that when I double click on an icon it doesn't open until I double click it 3-4 times and it becomes frustrating. And where is my "Mac HD" in the top right hand corner that I'm used to seeing??? Anyway, any help would be great. Thanks.

no, your mac is not capable of booting in 64-bit mode.

yes. but you are not missing much. you still run all 64-bit apps as 64-bit. only the kernel is 32-bit. to get actual advantage of 64-bit kernel you need loads of RAM (more than 8GB) and some 64-bit apps that are optimized to take advantage of a lot of RAM and have actual need to do it.

go to finder preferences->general and check the box to show hard drives on the desktop.
Anyway, any help would be great. Thanks.

  • Photoshop text issue with OSX Mavericks on Macbook Pro

I have a frustrating problem with Photoshop on my Macbook Pro. I can enter text without any problem, but the minute I try to edit it, resize, change font or colour it totallt dissappears and the layer name revers to 'layer x" (whatever number it is). This problem has appeared since the upgrade to OSX Mavericks, but only on my Macbook Pro...it does not happen on my 27" iMac which is running the same OS.
I have totally uninstalled all my CC Apps on the Mackbook Pro, reinstalled Photoshop CC, same problem.
I uninstalled CC again, and reinstalled Photoshop CS6, same problem.
this is despite having run the software without problem previously.
The Macbook Pro is a early 2010 model, has only 256 graphics...so cant run the 3D option of CC,but it has 8gig ram...the only difference between the Macbook Pro and iMac in terms of spec is the different graphics card size. (iMac is late 2012 newer version)
The problem is I am a teacher and the Mackbook is my teaching laptop...and I teach digital photography...so I have to have Photoshop up and running.
Any sugguestons...other than a total clean reinstall of the entire computer which would be a total pain and extremely time consuming.

Turned off the dictation feature and it seems to work with CS6 which I had installed....I'll try puting CC back on and see what happens.

  • Poll: Who is having no sound issues with X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Pro?

Several weeks ago I purchased an? X-Fi Titanium Fatalty Pro. I have the latest drivers/software installed for all of my hardware and am using Windows 7 64-bit ultimate. There is no sound when the computer resumes from Standby or hibernate. I have to disable the driver in the device manager and then re-enable to restore sound. It seems the X-fi driver is not initializing when the computer resumes from these states. Problem does not occur during a normal cold start or restart.
i have an open ticket with creative support and need to find out if others are having the same issue on windows 7. Several folks having the same issue at this link with little to no success at fixing. I don't know if this is a driver thing, an IRC conflict or what. I have no had this issue on the same hardware with any other sound cards I've I had, to include an HT Omega card and the onboard sound; which leaves me convinced it is something with the X-fi card.
Please respond to this posting if you are having the same issue. If you have found a way to fix it, please say so as the creative support folks are still investigating and have asked me to give them more examples.

Just to confirm that deselecting entries in the "headphone detection" tab the creative audio panel seems to provide a temporary (but not an acceptable permanent) solution.
"Automatically mute speakers" provides the workaround but "automatically enable headphone settings" also needs to be deselected otherwise the PC will set to "headphone" on resume (rather than "5:" for example).
So it could be that on resuming from standby it is setting some internal headphone settings to mute the speakers.
I have created a support ticket hoping that this and the other post above might bring about a driver update.
Will keep testing and post any updates.

  • Restoring 1st Gen Macbook Pro.  Please help!

I have a 1st Gen, 1.83 Core Duo Macbook Pro that I'm going to sell, but before I do, I'd like to restore the laptop to it's original factory settings.
When I go to do an "Erase and Install" from my original factory disk (no scratches), everything seems to be working fine until it gets to the install screen that says "Preparing the Disk." The install process just seems to freeze at this point. I can still move my mouse and it doesn't seem "frozen," other than the fact that there is no progress in the progress bar. I've waited over an hour and still no progress. I've shut the system down and rebooted from disk but when I come to the same part, the same thing happens.
Does anyone have any insight? Thanks in advance.
*The system came installed with Tiger, but I've upgraded to Leopard, and then to Snow Leopard since.

  • Weird 1st Gen Macbook Pro wireless problem

    Heya,
Recently i went on holidays for a week and left my macbook pro at home switched off.
Before I left it was working completely fine and would happily connected to my DLINK wireless router, as it had been for the previous few years.
Upon my return, i started my laptop only to find it was having trouble keeping a connection to the router. After about an hour it stopped connecting all together.
    Relevant info
    1) Router has been power cycled, as has the macbook pro.
    2) Router has been reset to factory default.
    3) Another macbook and ipod touch can see the router and connect fine using it
    4) I tried new user profile on the Macbook pro, as well as trashing the network prefs.
    5) I just finished doing a clean install on the macbook pro, and still no dice.
    7) I have reset NVRAM
    8) Both MB and MBP are running 10.5.7
    9) NO ONE TOUCHED THIS WHILE I WAS AWAY. The house was locked.
    10) Although it cant see the router, it can however create a network and also connect and keep a connection to another macbooks network, including shared internet.
The last one is the real strange part of this. At first i thought perhaps it was just the Airport dying, but the fact it can create a network aswell as connect to other networks create on other macbooks is a bit weird.
My neighbors WIFI usually comes up in the list of available networks, but this macbook pro is just not seeing ANY wireless networks that is originating from routers.
I just dont know what to do
I dont have the money to repair it, not to mention buy a replacement.. and i use wireless every day.
    any clues?
I have searched through the discussions, but anything similar i have found either have been unresolved or turn out to be something to do with the router.
but the router appears to be operating normally, i am current use it to write this post.

I am having the exact same problem with my MacBook and Airport Extreme. It seemed that once I downloaded the latest firmware 7.4.2, I am getting connectivity issues to the Airport. I have a strong signal, but the base station disappears often, even when the laptop is sitting right next to. Signal strength is good throughout the house, but connectivity to internet is spotty at best. My iPhone can connect to the Airport with no issues and is able to connect to the internet.
I did a factory hard reset and went back to the 7.4.1 firmware, but still am having same issues. Sometimes I have great connectivity, but more often then not, I am getting nothing. My MacBook appears to be able to connect to other wireless networks, i.e. the one in the Apple Store. But I haven't been able to confirm if any other computers can connect continually to the Airport. I have perfect internet connection through the ethernet ports on the Airport. Interference might be contributing, but shouldn't have any issue with the laptop sitting right next to the base.
Is there anyway to run diagnostics on the wireless card or the base? I did the PRAM reset, but nothing changed. I am glad I am not the only one who is now experiencing this. Very frustrating because a week ago, I was working great and have been for over a year and half.
Looking for any other bright ideas on how to troubleshoot.

  • Wireless Issues with windows 7 on Macbook Pro 2008

I have a 2008 Macbook Pro with Mountain Lion OS X and installed Windows 7 using Bootcamp Assistant. Can anyone help me with my wireless connection issues? I cannot seem to connect to the internet within Windows but surely within Mac OS.

You likely did not do the first menu item when you started Bootcamp Assistant. This menu item is to download the Windows Support Software. You then install this Support software from within Windows.

  • Issues with graphic card on Macbook Pro 2011

I just having problem with starting my Macboook. First, at start screen (gray background with the apple logo) appears pink/red horizontal lines over all the screen. Then, when i'm using my computer, screen goes black for no reason and i need to force restart to turn on the Mac.
I can see that many people is having the same problem. ¿Someone knows what's going on? I can't believe this is happening to a "HIGH QUALITY" expensive computer. This seems happening to 2011 Macbook Pros...
    Joaquín.

I had a similar problem on my iMac some years ago, and it was due to a graphic card failure, so I think it is the same problem for you. As it is a hardware problem, the only option is to take it to an Apple Store or reseller to get it fixed: you will get it fixed for free if your Mac is in warranty or if there is a replacement program.

  • Issues with exporting video from MacBook Pro to flash drive

I cannot sucessfully transfer [export] video taken on my gopro camera, from my MacBook Pro to any flash drive and play them on other computers.  For some reason the files are not playable, even with quicktime.  They will not play with ANY of my video softwares such as divx or any AVCHD software on a windows computer.  I need to make a presentation for a club trip in a few days! Can any one please suggest what is wrong?  They play on the Mac using Flip player but not quicktime!
Oh, and I don't have issues with transfering or exporting Jpegs or other photo formats.  Only video.
    Message was edited by: gmob25

hmmm.. the files from GoPro are already mp4 format.  The Flash is already FAT32, brand new 16gig...
I am new to Macs but have no problems with PC's.  I suspect that because the files are exporting as shadowed files which won't play and are very small kb files, yet they are actually in excess of 140 mb each that it might have something to do with the iphoto software?  That's where the pics and video are, they imported to there by default, not to a folder in the home folder [which is where I would have expected them to be]
By the way, the GoPro is already in mp4 format so it is easy when transferring to computers. No need to convert. I tried converting them to see what the outcome might be, and none worked!  I tried every format I could find using Video converter ultimate software, which is excellent.
And the problems began when quicktime wouldnt play the file, the screen was black.

  • Delay issue with mighty mouse and macbook pro. help?

Connected but delayed in movement. I am connected to an HD tv via HDMI and only a delay issue on the tv monitor. The mouse responds as normal on the laptop screen if I have it open, but on the TV it is delayed. Any clue as to what might be wrong? I am running HDMI to a converter for the mini display port and have seen it work many times with no delay. I have changed the batteries and reconnected/restarted the computer and the mouse numerous times.

Hey there, I'm on the forums because I can't get my wireless mouse to connect to my new MacBook Pro either (just got it yesterday). Bluetooth Device Manager seems to "see" it when it searches, but insists it can't connect to it, saying either "device not found" (which is ridiculous, since it's right up there in the list) or "cannot find the necessary services." Yet I cannot find anything definitive on the tubes to say that the two don't work together. Anyone else have any ideas for us??
I should mention I changed the batteries b/c at first I thought that's all it was. When it didn't work I brought it to a 2009 MacBook Pro, and that one connected no problem ::shaking head::

  • Calibration issues with 23" display and Macbook Pro 13".

    Hi All,
I'm a photographer and link my Macbook Pro to a 23" display in order to edit my work.
I have calibrated both displays with a gretagmacbeth eye-one display 2, however, despite this, when I move images between screens they change considerably, most noticeably the values of reds. I appreciate the laptop display is never going to be as bright as the stand alone, but am I asking too much for the colours to be the same?
I look forward to receiving any suggestions from those who've had similar experience, or those who are experts in the this field.
    Thank you in advance!

  • Start up Issues with Mountain Lion?

Having start up issues with Mountain Lion. Gray Screen and nothing happens.

If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all. Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is on a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways: ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.) ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens. ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid. Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the entire contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports.

  • Glitch with FaceTime contacts on Macbook pro

I'm having an issue with FaceTime on my Macbook pro.  When I type some contacts names in the FaceTime search bar, and select a FaceTime call, it will call a different contact.  Then after the call fails to the wrong contact it shows yet a 3rd different contact in the recently called list.  So for example if I try and call my son it will dial someone else and then show I called yet someone else in the history.  2009 Macbook pro Yosemite OS X 10.10.2

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
This user tip might help you understand how accounts work with Contacts (Address Book).
First check that all your settings are correct, that contact syncing is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
Make sure the contacts you are adding are added to your 'iCloud' group and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud group (you can do this by checking in groups), non iCloud contacts will not sync.
If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your contacts are in the iCloud group, you might try unchecking contact syncing in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling contact syncing.
