Having to constantly "re-start" Windows 7

Hi...
My wife's computer has to be constantly restarted. Note: It does NOT restart itself....just that when she clicks on a link,
the box opens but...the link never does...hence, restart, and then the link opens. What is causing that? Is it an easy
fix, or just a part of Win7? Thanks, in advance...Tony

  • ITunes 10.1.2 makes laptop unable to start windows

I recently updated to the new iTunes 10.1.2 and when prompted to restart and went ahead and let it happen. It is now stuck on the starting windows logo during POST and will not complete it. I restart the laptop and had to use a restore point to fix the issue. After reinstalling what I have lost I verified that I was able to restart the laptop with no issues.
I then went ahead and installed iTunes straight from the site and once again when I restarted the laptop it gets stuck on the starting windows logo. Like before I had to use a restore point. My desktop is not having this issue, I think, but has anyone else ran into this issue?

Restarting iTunes resolves the issue in the majority of cases, if it doesn't my second guess would be your security software.
What really seems strange here is that there have been no updates since well before Xmas, so after initially setting it up, the first update would have brought you right up to the most recent (and indeed the very last) .
Agh, how silly of me, I see it's iTunes you have updated.
If that's about all you've changed, you might want to try reinstalling iTunes and bonjour.

    Repair your Apple Sofyware update.
Go to START/ALL PROGRAMS/Apple Software Update. If it offers you a newer version of Apple Software Update, do it but Deselect any other software offered at the same time. Once done, try another iTunes install

  • Windows 7 Install Hangs at "Starting Windows" Screen

Having problems installing Windows 7 Home Premium from DVD on a newly built computer. When I run the Windows 7 Home Premium disc I get past "windows is loading files..." and then freeze on "starting windows" just after I see 4 little colored balls in the center of the screen.
    Here's what I've got:
    Monitor: Samsung T260HD 25.5in Rose/Black LCD w/ATSC
    HDD: 2 x Seagate 1.5TB Serial ATA HD 7200/32MB/SATA-3G
    Memory: Corsair Dominator 6144MB PC12800 DDR3 1600MHz (3x2)
    DVD: LG 22X DVDRW SATA
Motherboard: ASUS P6TD Deluxe Intel X58 Socket LGA1366 MB
Power Supply: Corsair 950w 80 Plus Power Supply
GPU: 5850 is backordered, so am using an old Nvidia (6400 GT?) to attempt to install Windows
    OS: Windows 7 Home Premium
I've done lots of research and tried:
    1. Using a PS2 keyboard/mouse
    2. Disabling USB in bios
    3. Disabling just about everything else in bios
    4. Tried w/ 2MB, 4MB and 6MB ram
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!

    Hi Stentorian,
It seems that you have not ever tried installing other systems like Windows XP and etc on your new built computer. It is difficult for us to determine if the computer actually works.
In addition, since the installation process has not even passed first stage to copy the installation files to the memory. The issue is likely to be caused by incompatible hardware such as the incompatible motherboarad, RAM and etc. Therefore, it is strongly recommended contacting with the hardware manufacture or the retailer to help you check the issue cause you may spend too much time on testing the issue by yourself.
Or you can also try installing Windows 7 on one hard drive and plug in one memory card (2MB, 4MB and 6MB respectively) to check if it works.
NOTE: During the installation, please unplug all the unnecessary hardware devices to avoid any conflicts.
    Judy :)

    Thank You,
This is a  direct copy from Insider Hub regarding how to check for Windows Updates when Start Menu is not functioning. Hope it also applies to your issue.....
    Start menu
When you boot Windows 10 Technical Preview, the Start menu may not appear. Checking for updates may fix this problem. To check for updates without the Start menu, do the following:
    Select the Internet Explorer icon.
Type http://update.microsoft.com into the address bar and select
    Enter.
If you are prompted to run a control, click
    Yes.
This should bring up the Check for updates window. Install updates.
If no update is available, or the available updates don’t fix the issue, restart the device–this should make the Start menu appear. To reboot without using the Start menu:
Hold down the Windows key and select L to lock the device. Swipe up or select
Enter to open the sign in screen. Select the
Power icon on the log in screen to restart the computer.
    OR
Hold down the Windows key and select R to bring up a command prompt. In the prompt, type
    shutdown –r to restart

  • Satellite C660D froze and does not start - Windows failed to start

Ok pretty much the most dense person you will ever likely to meet when it comes to things like this. but will try my best to explain.
Couple of days ago my laptop froze on me resulting on me having to turn it off and start it again by the power button. When I started it again the message below appeared.
    WINDOWS ERROR RECOVERY
Windows failed to start . A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.
If windows files have been damaged or configured in incorrectly, start up repair can help and diagnose the problem, if power was interrupted during start up, choose start windows normally.
    -Launch Start up repair (recommended)
    -Start windows normally
When I press Launch Start up repair it goes to a screen with a big cursor (which you can move around) but nothing else happens.
When I pressed on the start windows normally setting it went through to the windows logo whilst starting up but then stalls at this point.
My question is, is it easy to fix & if not where is the best place to take it to get fixed. Said I was pretty dense :p
    Thanks for looking
    Dean

    >My question is, is it easy to fix & if not where is the best place to take it to get fixed. Said I was pretty dense
I think its easy to fix but you would need an Toshiba Recovery disk.
Did you create one in the past?
If not, try to start the HDD recovery: power up the unit, press F8. Now choose Repair my Computer.
Now new Window should open and here you should choose Toshiba HDD recovery option. This would set the notebook back to factory settings.
In case this isnt possible, you would need to boot from a recovery disk to reinstall the system.

  • Having trouble with pop-up windows and ads for MacKeeper

I've been having trouble with pop-up windows and ads for MacKeeper and similar "services." Tried to download "MPlayerX" a week ago and it all started then. I thought I deleted the file but I'm still having trouble. I've been digging for solutions on here, but nothing I've found on here has worked yet--the VSearch stuff (I think) isn't on my hard drive. Any advice?

You installed a variant of the "VSearch" trojan. Remove it as follows.
This malware has many variants. Anyone else finding this comment should not expect it to be applicable.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.venus.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.venus.daemon.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.venus.helper.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
    /Library/Application Support/venus
    /System/Library/Frameworks/v.framework
The problem may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Then, still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Windows 7 freezing at 'Starting Windows' screen. (GX620)

I had been running Windows 7 since June '09 with no problems. Recently, every time I start windows it gets stuck on the 'starting windows' screen. I've tried reformatting, reinstalling with different versions of Windows 7 and different discs. I've tried swapping the memory and the hard-drive. I've updated the bios.
What is going on? Please help.

I am having this same issue and was wondering if you came up with a solution.
Even when I try to reinstall a fresh copy of Windows 7 the computer locks up after the installation of the initial files.  Then I'm left with a useless barely-installed new system so I am forced to go back to the original one that doesn't work anyway.  Safe mode works just fine, but I can't work in Safe Mode all the time.

  • R6970 lightning, black screen after starting Windows screen

Alright so I've been getting a few random bsod saying something about non paged error. At first it was random sometimes in Windows sometimes before the login screen. But then it became consistent, couldn't boot to Windows at all after the starting Windows screen it would bsod everytime. So ran memtest and system repair off the disk and found no errors. So then one time I found the bsod showed an error with atikmdag so then I started to look into driver issues. Deleted catalyst, the drivers and then rebooted. Long and behold it booted Windows fine. Once I loaded Windows it said installing device driver for the graphics card, it finished and prompted a reboot. So I did but on start up after the starting Windows screen it just goes black. Will go into safe mode fine but otherwise black. And it will do that with an old driver, new driver, whether I install with catalyst or Windows does it. Switched via bios and no screen at all on any other setting than the middle switch. So grabbed a gtx 650 from my brother and plugged it in and it booted fine, installed the driver and no problems. So is my card shot or is there something I am missing? Do I have a corrupt bios and need to flash it?
Another note it ran games fine and wouldn't crash but when it was just sitting with Google Chrome and a few tabs is when it started having problems.

  • Computer wont fully start/Windows will not load

I have a Toshiba Satellite A305-S6905, and was having a few issues with it.  I read on the Toshiba Product Support how to restore my laptop to the 'out of box state'.  While doing this it encountered an error and shut down, I saw people saying that this was due to a hard drive issue and that it needed to be replaced.  I replaced the hard drive, and still have no luck getting my computer to fully start up.  I tired to install Windows Vista Ultimate, and everything was going fine until the last step where it froze and shut down.  Now when I start up my computer it says "Windows failed to start" and gives me all the start up options.  When I select 'Start Windows Normally" it goes to the screen with the green loading bar that says "Microsoft Corporation" underneath it, and will go no further.  When I select Safe Mode, it stops and hangs after it loads windows\system32\crcdisk.sys and will go no further.  Any assistance will me much, much, much appreciated, thank you!

Best to restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media. If you don't have the discs, obtain them from Toshiba.

  • K8T Mstr2-FAR7: "Setup is starting Windows" but never is

I am having a problem of reinstalling WXP x64 on SATA HDD. The installation process stalled after display of "Setup is starting Windows" was closed and black screen stayed. I tried it again with all peripheral devices, PCI cards, printer, etc removed except the monitor but to no avail.
I attempted to install WXP x64 on PATA for experimental purpose and on the way I hit F6 and loaded SATA drivers then the same problem repeated.
I installed WXP x64 on PATA without loading SATA drivers, then I installed SATA drivers but the SATA HDDs were indicated to be "Uninitialized"
I tried installing WXP x86 on SATA and found there was no such problem.
The WXP x64 shown in my sig was installed on K8T Master2-FAR. About a year ago the mobo was replaced with the present one and all HDDs were moved to the present mobo.  After the move I confirmed all previously install OSes worked. But now I am having difficulty reinstalling WXP x64.
I used the same SATA drivers as were used when the OS was installed on the old mobo, and then tried a newer version downloaded from PlanetAMD. I checked MSI and VIA websites but could not find any for WXP x64.
    Any suggestion is appreciated.

Note that following overlaps my latest post to my other thread.
The following is what I did since:
I run WD's diagnostic utility(Vendor of  SATA HDDs is Western Digital) but it returned "NO ERROR".
I installed Windows XP x86 on the SATA-1, partition #2 with no problem. Then the drive H: was all of a sudden, found to be healthy and all the data in it became visible!! There is no check disk occurred while booting the OS. I tried booting all other OSes and two of them did not cause CHKDSK, and other three did cause CHKDSK. I let them run CHKDSK but no error was reported.  You may wonder what happened with D:, E:, F: and G:. Well, unfortunately I had already reformatted those partitions before I installed the Windows XP x86. Note that D:, E and G: were totally inaccessible while F: and H: were still accessible but most data were invisible. Thus, I can infer that data in F: could have reappeared if it was not reformatted.
What conclusion can be drawn from my ordeal?  It appears that the SATA driver from VIA does not support Windows XP x64 to be installed on MS-9617. Which of the driver or the mobo is to be blamed?  Since MS-9617 which is newer than MS-9130 which has no such problem, my MS-9617 is most probably defective. Any comment on the above is appreciated.
Why the data disappeared and then reappeared? I am unable to figure it out. One may say that CHKDSK when once run just fixed it.  But it repeatedly happend and repeatedly reported a lot of errors, seemingly be never ending, so that I reset to end it. Since then I cancelled CHKDSK every time when booting OS except after I noticed that the data reappeared.
I would appreciate it if anyone provide possible explanation as to how it could have happend.

  • Z68-GD65 Hangs on Starting Windows because of USB Controller. Any fixes?

Issue: During Windows 7 (32 bit & 64 bit) installation and startup, the computer hangs at "Starting Windows". It will display a pixel or two of the first red part of the logo animation and then stop.
    System Setup/Hardware:
    Mobo - Z68-GD65
    RAM - Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB)
    HDD - Corsair Force 3 60GB SSD
    CPU - Intel i5-2400 (Sandybridge)
PSU - Antec Earth Watts 650W
GPU - Asus Geforce GTX 560 Ti
Cause: I found that when I disabled the USB Controller completely from the BIOS, everything worked smoothly (install & startup). If I left the USB Controller enabled and just disabled the Legacy Controller, I would be left with a blinking DOS cursor after POST.
This is an issue because both keyboard and mouse are USB. I had to borrow an old PS/2 mouse to even install windows.
    Troubleshooting tried:
    - Tried disabling EVERY (and yes, I mean every, I've rebooted this thing 50+ times [stopped keeping track]) setting that can possible be disabled individually
    - Tried unplugged every component except: board, hdd and dvdrom
    - Tried swapping RAM
    - Tried swapping HDDs (to Sata non SSD)
    - Tried swapping PSUs
    - Tried changing Windows 7 install discs (one 32 bit, one 64 bit)
    - Tried removing all motherboard connections (FP audio, FP usb, etc, everything but 24+8pin power)
    - Tried clearing CMOS and resetting BIOS
    - Tried enabling USB Controller via ClickOnce BIOS and restarting
    - Tried fully updating Windows 7 and all drivers (video, mobo, etc)
    - Tried updating BIOS with Live 5
    - Tried leaving only USB 3.0 Controller enabled and plugging mouse/keyboard into those ports (blue on back)
    - Tried Windows repair
    - Tried Windows boot logging (got to file CLASSPNP.sys)
    - Tried booting to Safe Mode
    - Tried banging head on wall  (this was successful in giving me a headache, but not booting the computer)
I mainly list the troubleshooting above to convey the amount of frustration I've had with this board.
The USB Controller simply seems bad or the driver (or the way the board interacts/loads the Windows driver) is bad. I must have USB on my computer.
If I need to RMA, please let me know, however, I would hope there is a solution out there to fix the USB Controller issue. The RMA deadline is the 20th, I hope I can get an answer one way or the other before this as if there is no answer, I will be forced to RMA and go with another product from a different manufacturer (I really wanted to get over my "Asus only" attitude and try you MSI! I've been impressed up until this point, please don't let me down).
    Please help?
-Frazzled not tech illiterate personal system builder.

    phasedone,
I was having the exact same issue with a new build (Mobo MSI Z68-GD65-G3).  I had been banging my head against the wall for a while and then I came across your post.  Subsequently, I disabled the USB controller in BIOS and my Win 7 install ran fine (minus the fact that I had no access to my USB keyboard and mouse).   I set the BIOS back to default settings which re-enabled the USB controller, and thus was able to re-plug the mouse and keyboard in after the windows loading screen, where the 4 colored orbs come together to make the Windows flag.  This seemed to do the trick.
Now the problem is, everytime the computer restarts (i.e. for any Windows updates), it freezes at the same point it would during the installation.  This is again assuming the mouse and keyboard are still plugged into the rear panel USB ports.  Which of course they're going to be!
Anyone with a recommendation as to how to fix this?  Is this a hardware defect or can it be solved with some sort of driver or firmware update?  I'm at a loss... but I certainly shouldn't have to unplug all USBs before starting the computer, that's just nuts.
I'm considering RMA as well, but would like to see if any MSI staff members or forum members might be able to share their insight.

  • Having a major problem in windows...maybe someone can help?

I normally wouldn't ask a windows question here, but I don't know where to turn for this one.
My Macbook is less than a month old, base model. I'm running Windows XP home. I keep getting a windows stop error, and can't for the life of me figure out why. I'm getting stop error 000000ea, which is "THREADSTUCK_IN_DEVICEDRIVER". I've tried all the standard stuff, reinstalling programs, operating systems, drivers...you name it. I've tried the latest drivers...older drivers...you name it. This is my second Macbook, and while my first one had some major issues, it wasn't doing this, and I'm not doing anything different. It hasn't acted funny in Leopard, but the fact that it's frequently doing it in Windows...which I kind of need to run...is quite worrysome. I'm told it's either a hardware problem, or a driver problem. Specifically this happens when I'm playing games, but I'm not running anything that would really push the system's limits. It's done it while not running games, though, so I'm not ready to blame that. I upgraded the RAM to 2gb of Corsair RAM, and have since ran a good number of RAM tests to make sure there isn't a problem with one of the sticks. That's grasping at straws, though, just assuming that since video ram is shared that maybe it could be connected. This is a brand new machine, and I'm barely past my 2 week exhange period...I really hope this isn't a hardware problem.

    Hi,
That Windows stop code indicates that video hardware is being initialized, but never achieves a state of readiness, thus the thread executing the driver code never returns to the calling process.
I looked on www.techbible.com, and they suggest a problem with the hardware is a probable cause. Of course, it could be due to an incorrect driver too. See if you can start Windows in safe mode or VGA mode. The older MacBooks have GMA-950 video, while newer MacBooks have X3100 video. Be sure you're installing the right driver. Be sure the MacBook EFI and SMC code is up to date too.
I'm running Vista on a GMA-950 MacBook, and Vista pretty much detected all the Mac hardware, except for the iSight camera. Since XP is older, it definitely needs the Boot Camp driver disc for many hardware drivers.

  • Satellite U - Crashes when starting windows and recovery cannot fix

Most of the time but not every time the laptop crashes when starting windows.
I get a blue screen, a dump file is created and then it restarts and gives me the option of starting windows normally or using windows recovery. The windows recovery cannot fix the problem.
When I select the option of opening windows normally everything works fine with no problems.
If I restart the laptop it never crashes.
The problem only happens about 90% of the time when switching it on.
The problem started soon after buying the laptop in October.
Originally it came with Windows Vista and I wondered if the problem was with Vista so yeterday I upgraded to Windows 7 but it still crashes on most start ups. Otherwise the laptop works fine and I am pleased with it.
I suspect the problem might be with Realtec but the drivers appear to be up to date. My internet security is trend micro.
I wondered if it might be a hardware problem when it happens under both Vista and windows 7.
Has anyone got any ideas about what might be causing the laptop to crash on startup?

I have exactly the same problem with the laptop (U500 11E) crashing on startup, recovery can't do anything and sometimes I get a Windows "solution" box that tries to find something and then just vanishes.
I followed the same procedure as Dave, by upgrading to Win7 thinking that might fix the problem, but it clearly didn't. I also updated all drivers and the BIOS to the latest versions.
I think my trouble started not right out of the box but only after I upgraded to Vista Service Pack 1, but I'm not completely sure.
It is pretty annoying because of course it now takes twice as long to get the laptop up and running.
Finding someone else who also has the problem makes me wonder if the problem might have another cause and if there might be a way to fix it?

With Windows Explorer, navigate to your C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support folder.
Copy the SQLite3.dll that you should find there, navigate to the nearby Mobile Device Support folder, and Paste it in there also.
Restart the programme all should be well
In case that your OS is (64 bit)
    1. Open windows explorer, go to location C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support
    2. Copy file "SQLite3.dll"
    3. Now paste it in the folder  C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support
    4. Restart the programme, it should not display that message, it should be clear.
