Having to hold option/alt key at startup

Hello,
When I restart my Macbook Pro nothing happens unless I start it by holding down the option/alt key when I turn it on so I can select the hard drive. I'm not sure if the bootloader is messed up or what. I started to install Windows via the Bootcamp but stopped the installation. That is probably the reason but I am not sure how to fix the bootloader on a Mac.
Thank you

try resetting PRAM.

then go to system preferences->startup disk and select your main drive as the startup disk.

  • Booting holding the alt key

I try to boot my newly bought Mac Pro holding the alt key but I only get a blanc screen.
Holding shift or "c" or "d" is working, but it seems to freeze on holding the option-key.
I already tried to remove everything that is not "standard" (PCI eSata card, extra hdd).
Even did a clean reinstall of the OS but nothings helps.
Couldn't find much answers on the net.
    Anybody a idea or suggestion?

    What I did:
Booted from the original install dvd, started diskutility, checked al partitions (bootable and not).
    No problem found.
Still with the install dvd in the optical I removed all hdd's and tried to boot with the alt-key. white screen.
I disconnected the optical drive and put one hdd with 2 partitions back in place. white screen.
Still with only 1 hdd I disconnected everything except the keyboard.
    => 2 bootable partitions found . . . whoohoo.
Connected 1 device at a time back untill I got again a white screen without bootable partition.
The ethernetconnection seems to be the guilty one.
    RJ45 disconnected => correct startup with ALT-key
    RJ45 connected => white screen.
I tried it several times so I'm sure about this.
The MP is connected to a small gigabitswitch from d-link.
    Nothing special in the network.
A solution or reason for this would be nice, but now I know how to work around, so the 'urge' is gone now?

  • Option (Alt) key not creating symbols and characters

I have a new MacBook Pro, UK British Keyboard setup and im not sure if the issue came from updating to Lion, or if it was already a problem on Snow Leopard.
The problem i have is that with the Option (Alt) key pressed im not getting most of the symbols that i should. Currently i can only print out '¡ and €' (Option-2 and Option-2), the rest just dont work.
I have been through all the prefrences and changed settings so nothing is using an Option+Key combination, but still not working.
I have also opened the Keyboard Viewer, and with Option pressed it shows that the other symbols are at the correct keys, and when i press the Keyboard Viewer lights up but nothing happens in the text.
Any help will be apreciated, i would rather get the source of the problem than just install software to overwrite the problem.
    Thanks

Still having problems here with this. It worked after a re-install of Lion, but now is is back to square one: no euro-sign.
    Help please!

  • Swap Option/Alt key for extra Control key?

I use the control key far more then I ever use the Option/alt key.
Is there any way (on either or both my MacBook Pro's keyboard, or my Slim Apple Blutooh keyboard that I can "change" the function of that option key to an extra control key? That way I can have one on both sides of the keyboard.
I've looked and the only thing I can find is something that tuned it into an extra return/enter key. But thats not what I want....but it is close. So there has to be a way to do it.
    So any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Scott

    THANKS!
That is exactly what I needed!
I can't believe I never found that before!
Its not as "light weight" or simple to use as I was hoping for, but I got it figured it out and now it is working great!
    Thanks again!

  • Option/Alt Key not recognized by Logitech G510

I installed Windows 8 Pro on my MacPro today and it all installed fine.  The problem is I have a Logitech G510 illuminated gaming keyboard that I payed 100 bucks for and I love it.    But when I restart and press the alt/option key  the screen stays black for about 10 seconds then it just loads the Apple OsX.   As if it Bootcamp never realized I am pressing the alt/option key  .    Getting another keyboard is not an option .  Is there any fix for this problem?
Yes I have tried pressing other buttons like Ctrl and the Windows button  , Nothing works.
Please if anybody knows a fix for this let me know.

I can't quite figure out what you were trying to use on your "usb" to install Mavericks. It has to be a bootable USB installer of some sort. It doesn't sound like you were using a bootable installer disk.
I have used DiskMaker X a few times and it works very well. I'd do that if I were you. You would just boot from the USB drive that you make with DiskMaker X, use it to completely erase (i.e., reformat) your HD, and then install Mavericks.

  • Mac Pro - Holding option doesn't display startup manager

I have a late 2008 Mac Pro, Ive been running OSX 10.8.5 and Mavericks (on separate partitions). Now out of nowhere holding down option doesn't bring up my startup manager. I can access both OS's by changing the startup disk in system preferences, but I'd love to get the startup manager fixed.
I have tried reseting the SMC (by unplugging it for like a minute) and resetting the PRAM/ NVRAM by holding down Command + Option + R + P; however resting the PRAM doesn't seem to be working. The startup chime happens once and then after about thirty seconds it boots into the recovery partition.
    Thanks in advance!

I had this problem with my 2009 Mac Pro with OS X Yosemite. The problem was fixed for me after removing two of my ram sticks, resetting the PRAM three times in a row (wait to hear chime, then wait for restart, do this three times) and booting up. There are some additional firmware settings that are reset when you remove ram. I replaced the ram, and now my startup disk menu always appears. Googling "how to reset firmware password on mac pro" will give you solutions that also solve the missing startup manager problem. Best of luck to you!

  • How can I select multiple songs in iTunes without having to hold the Command key while clicking each individual song

Trying to drag a block of songs from iTunes into TuneUp and I have about 1800 songs to bring in.  TuneUp maxes out at 1000 songs per batch, so I can't use Select All, but I also don't want to Command + Click 800 times to get all of those songs selected.
    Thanks in advance.

Answered my own question.  Select song at the beginning of the list.  Hold down the shift key.  Go to the last song you want in your list.  Click that song.  All songs in between will be highlighted.  Such and idiot.

  • Boot Camp partition not showing in startup disk or when holding alt key

I've read countless discussions about similar questions to this one, however, I still haven't been able to find any solution.
I have an old 2006 MacBook that has just been fully updated and reformatted. I'm running OSX 10.7.5 and Boot Camp 4.
I went through the Boot Camp installation from an Windows ISO image in my usb drive, where it succesfully downloaded all files needed, and prompted me to make the partition, after which it restarted and was supposed to take me to the installation manager in the Windows partition. I first got the "No bootable driver" error, to which I read I was supposed to restart the computer, hold the alt key, and choose the boot camp partition. However, it does not show up. I only get Mac and Recover drivers.
I went into the Mac's startup disk, and only the Mac driver is showing, no Boot Camp driver, however, when I go into Disk Utilities, I can see that the BootCamp driver there.
I read somewhere that I should zap pram and reset SMC, which I did with their instructions. It didn't change anything, I still only get the Mac driver and Recovery when hitting the alt key.
Does it have something to do with my MacBook being older? That's the only reason I can think that would not allow me to do this.
Let me know what other info I can give you so that you can please help me!! Thanks in advance!

In last resort I solved my missing BOOTCAMP partition problem using a program called: iPartition from coriolis systems located in the United Kingdom http://www.coriolis-systems.com/iPartition.php it took me a coupleof days to figure out the credit card system they have Hint: use your 9 digit zip code to find your credit card address and call your bank if you have an overseas hold on the card!!!! The program found my missing BOOTCAMP partition and restored it. It did take a couple of e-mails to learn to use their program. Let me know how you turn out!

  • I copied our entire music folder from old PC on tovnew iMac, all our muisc is there, but not our individual libraries have gone. and holding down the alt key when opening iTunes, brings up no options to choose or create  libarys, can i recover our liba

    Hi
I copied our entire music folder from our old pc on to the new imac, and all the apps, music etc is there, but no individual libarys, we had 5 very different ones, when pressing and holding the alt key on opeing itunes, nothing happens it just opens into itunes, no option to choose or create a libary, what am i doing wrong?

Did you copy the entire iTunes folder, not just media?  This includes the critical library.itl file.
Image of folder structure and explanation of different iTunes versions (turingtest2 post) - https://discussions.apple.com/message/13025536 and https://discussions.apple.com/message/17457605
Now you say you had 5 libraries.  If you really mean that then you would have to have copied 5 different iTunes folders in their entirety, not just one folder.  Anyway, something makes me feel you did not copy a whole iTunes folder and all its subfolders and files, you only copied the music.
On the starting with the option (alt) key held down I really don't know what to advise.  It works for me hundreds of times and just about everybody else here.  The only thing I can suggest is to hold the key down longer or perhaps start iTunes and then 1 second later hold down the key for a few seconds.

  • On my macbook pro i have to hold the alt/option button when starting up...

otherwise windows xp is the default hardrive that starts.....how to change the default hardrive at start up to be the mac? it's just getting annoying always having to hold the alt/option button at start up

    Hi brazzy3,
    Welcome to the forum.
You can set the default startup disk from within System Preferences in OSX. Simply fire up System Preferences, select Startup Disk then select the volume you want to startup from automatically.
Boot Camp Beta also installs a Startup Disk control panel that lets you set the default operating system when you’re running Windows XP.

  • Nothing happens when holding 'alt' key on boot-up.

When I try to start my MacBook by holding the 'alt' key, all I see is the mouse cursor and it just stays on that screen.  I can move the mouse cursor around but nothing happens.

    Hello e-zero
Start with resetting your NVRAM on your MacBook and then hold Option or Alt key to see if the Startup Manager comes up. If not , go over the troubleshooting in the third article to help isolate and resolve the issue.

  • Why is my mac mini server apparently looking for wireless while I hold option at startup?

Besides the Lion recovery partition on my Mac Mini, I have 2 partitions:  One with Lion and one with Snow Leopard Server that I often boot from in order to test some things.  However, it takes FOREVER at the gray screen while I hold option, until the various startup disks appear.
There is a spinning wheel next to a popup menu button, and the wireless symbol.  The Mac Mini is apparently looking for wireless for some specified time, then finally gives up and says, "Ok, here are your disk partitions."  This is very annoying, and I would like to know what it is, and how to turn it off.  My Mini is plugged into Ethernet.
    Thanks,

Are there any Mount points setup or listed in Login Items?
Might try a variation of this from older OSes...
This command adds a delay, in this case 45 seconds, before displaying the Login Window.
defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow StartupDelay -int 45
If the Login Window UI detects that the network servers are available when it starts, it will skip the delay, also if network servers become available before the delay expires, the Login Window UI cancels the delay and displays.

  • Alt key stuck when using mouse in flash CS5.5 on os x lion. sucks. please help.

    Hi there,
since I've updated to lion flash cs5.5 is utterly unusable. The alt key is always stuck in this app when I use the mouse. So if I select something then try to move it, it copies it (as if I was holding down alt key). It basically means I can't use flash for anything..
Has anyone else had this issue and resolved it?
I saw similar forum posts for photoshop cs5 and snow leopard, and even tried the utility provided on those forums. Didn't work.
I removed my wacom tablet driver,
    I reinstalled flash,
I shut down EVERYTHING except flash.  Nothing works - alt key is always active in flash.
Is this some kind of bad joke from Adobe? Is there really no fix for this? I can't believe it - honestly...
Additional note - in the key remapping page - it reckognizes the alt key normally, and all other key combinations - it is only when using the mouse that the alt key is stuck.

    Hello,
I was having the same exact problems with Flash Professional after upgrading my OS X to Lion.  (Alt/Option key seems like it's stuck / Duplicating objects on stage just by clicking and moving the object.)  My main problem was not being able to curve a straight line with the Arrow tool.  Instead it would create a corner point as if the Alt/Option key was being held.
I stumbled upon this thread before finding my solution so I thought I'd share what worked for me.
Here is the thread I found with the solution that worked:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/5222999
Basically I had a program called AirDisplay installed.  AirDisplay allows me to use my iPad as a second monitor for my Mac.  So if you have this program installed, or one similar to AirDisplay, uninstalling this program may get your Flash Professional to work correctly again.  It certainly did for me to my amazement.
Hope this works for you or anyone else who is experiencing this weird and frustrating problem!

  • CHANGE BRUSH SIZE WITH CTRL and alt KEYS

    Hello everyone,
i'm on the road with my new macbook and i have a problem with setting up my wacom pen.
At home i use a iMac with CS5 and to change the brush size i press the alt and the ctrl key and move the pen to left/tight up/down to chang size and hardnes of the brush. I find this very handy!
On my new Macbook i have CC and i don't have the option to use this easy key combination, i was loking around and did some google, but i could not find the place to get the same settings on my macbook.
Is there anyone who can help me?
    Thank you very much.

When you press and hold Option/Alt  + Control  and Left mouse click and drag nothing happens?
(the button on your pen is set to left click?)
The Option/Alt key should always be the second key to the left of the spacebar
The Control key should always be the third key to the left of the spacebar
