Having troble networking my pc and macbook

I have been trying to connect my pc and macbook, but can not do it. The PC is hooked up to the linksys router. I downloaded service pack 2 to run the wireless network setup, that di d not work. I followed all the instructions and when I go to go in the finder and connect to server, I no longer get prompted for a username and password, Now I get an error message 36 saying not all information can be read or written.
Apple support says it is a linksys problem, lnksys says it is an apple problem. Before I disabled my keychain (because it was popping up every two seconds in safari) i got the password prompt. Now I get nothing. I have a printout of the network name, know the workgoup, and computer name, and the WEP key if that helps.
Ay assistance would be greatly appreciated.

My personal experience with file sharing has only been through direct connection. I used a regular rj45 network cable (it wasn't even a cross-over!) and turned on a few settings within Apple Sys Prefs.
Internet & Network: Sharing
-Turn on Personal File Sharing & Windows Sharing
Turning on Windows sharing will result in an IP address being displayed in the same window confirming that you're on the network. Be patient - and read everything on this screen. You will see that in order to share, you must enable an account to use Windows sharing.
If you only have one account, it will not work. Create a second guest account and associate that account to the Windows sharing setting. This new account will have restricted access. If you want your PC to see files, you will have to copy them into the ../Public/Drop Box folder which is accessed from the hard disk/Users directory. Within users you will see all the accounts on your computer. Once you're inside the new account you created you will understand why only certain folders (by default) are accessible.
I've used various Linksys and D-Link routers. My Macbook could not work with the WEP security settings. I discovered that turning off WEP or moving on up to the more secure settings such as WPA allowed me to connect to these routers wirelessly.
Once you've set your file sharing options and changed the security settings on your router, you should be able to see the Macbook by browsing your network neighborhood on the PC. Once you find the Macbook, you will be prompted for a user name and password. This is the user name/password that you specified earlier for the new guest account you created to associate with Windows File Sharing.
Try this - let me know if it works (I hope it does).

  • Help with networking between pc and Macbook PRo

i am using macbook pro running 10.5.4 , at home i have 3 pc's using Windows XP and they connected via router .
When i connect the mac i can see all the pc's and i have access to each one of them and i also have internet . the ip that i get is 192.168.1.4.
My problem is none of the pc's see the mac . i configured the file sharing section in the mac plus all the " share files using SMB " .
when i going to " My Network Places " in the pc i don't see any of the shared foldes of the mac but when i am getting into :
ENTIRE NETWORK > MICROSOFT WINDOWS NETWORK > WORKGROUP
i can see there the mac but when i click all i see is PRinters & Faxes .
i tried everything but nothing helps plus i tried to find out if there is something related to the admin account ?
Any Idea what should i do ?

x's networking isnt the best (read alot of the time it likes to play dumb). But most of the time the problem lies in the numbers. You need to make sure both machines have the same first 3 numbers in their ip address (ie, 192.168.0.x) and that they are both looking at the same router (ie. 192.168.0.1). Thats usually the first trouble maker. But i have also noticed lately leopard sometimes like to just not network. Might try a restart if the number thing isnt playing nice.
there are other potential external problems, like if you've directly connected the computers by ethernet, but arent using a crossover cable. But thats probably your problem, since you have file sharing turned on.

  • Trying to network a PC and MacBook to use HP printer

I'm trying to set up a friend's HP All-in-one printer 7310 using her MacBook Laptop(which is not her primary computer).
The printer is NOT wireless, so I'm trying to go through her PC using Linksys. The PC and another PC laptop can print with no problems using wireless. Although MacBook picks up the wireless network with no problem, I can't get it to talk to the PC and then print. It starts the "opening connections" screen, but then stalls and finally says it can't find the printer.
I've also set the desktop PC to share the printer.
What am I doing wrong. Please help and go step by step for the novice with the PC world.
    thank you!

  • Networking Windows 7 and MacBook Pro

I have unsuccessfully attempted to network my Mac Book Pro with an HP with Windows 7. Thoughts? I've tried everything.

I just did a web search and found a page that addresses the issue. After some fumbling around with the instructions not working I did get it to work.
I know can see the Windows7 PC on my Shared Items, can connect and access files given permission.
I used a guest account for access meaning the PC always has a Guest account turned on. I need to figure out how to add a new name and make it password protected. I was unable to do that.
On page 4 of the directions I got hung up for a while not realizing there was a pull down for public sharing where password could be turned on or off. As a guest I turned it off and was able to access the computer. It was more difficult then it really probably needs to be. Windows 7 information on Microsoft's website discusses shearing Windows 7 to Windows 7 (using Homegroup) as being much easier than sharing between Macs. So perhaps the intent was not to make it too easy.

Where can I buy a larger hard drive for my late 2008, 15" macbook pro?  From reviewing questions and answers on the support community it would appear that having Apple remove the old and install the new hard drive is recommended.  But how/where?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can install the new hard disk yourself if you want to. You just need a 2'5" SATA II hard drive, which is compatible with your MacBook Pro. You can buy one at OWC > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/ You can filter hard drives by computer, so press a "Click to view all...", choose your computer in the sidebar and it will give you the compatible hard drives.
There are different brands for the MacBook Pro. The most recommended are HGST and Seagate, which have good reputation. A 7200 rpm hard drive will give you extra performance

iTunes is a mess! It couldn't find it's own libraries and I was forced to create a new one. Now I don't know where my music is or if any's missing.

    How crap is that?
    It's not crap at all.
It's not that simple. For example, I've 3500 songs on my MacBook but don't want them all on my phone, so I have to manually select each song again???
There has to be a solution.
Why not simply make a playlist with the songs you want on the iPhone?
and maintain a current backup of your computer.

  • Iphone and ipad can find network, iMac and macbook 10.8.2 cannot

Had a network fault. When fault was fixed, ipad/iphone & Dell studio xps laptop reconnected automatically. Imac 2012 and macbook 2010, 10.8.3, can see network but not connect automatically. Tried connecting to network and get message connection timeout has occurred.
    Got connection by;
    Open Network preferences
    Join other network
enter network name select - Security wpa2 personal
    enter network password
However - I need to do this after every sleep/reboot - is there a fix for this?
PS - I noted that I had previously been on WEP security setting and had real problems connecting to external devices consistently, such as epson wireless printer BX935FWD, and Western Digital My Book Live Duo. Since moving onto WPA2, these connection now work consistently, but macbook and imac always need to be forced to connect to network, in manner described above
Does anyone share a similar problem/managed to resolve network issues? - very frustrating.....must be an OSX issue as all other devices connect without issue.

I've managed to download 10.8.2 for my MBP Retina 13.3" but when I try and install I'm told that none of my discs are suitable i.e. Internal solid state drive with 370 GB available, or attached thunderbolt drive.   Meanwhile my iPhoto won't work. This has arisen because I migrated from an older MBP which was already running 10.8.2 and had latest iPhoto onto a factory fresh 10.8.1 machine.

I'm having problems with 8.1 and Continuity / Handoff. It will work fine for web pages, etc. but in email when I try to do it between by iPhone 5s running 8.1 and my Macbook Pro running Yosemite I consistently get an error. "Failed to Continue Activity" Cocoa Error 4609.  Handoff is working for phone calls and text messages. By email just crashes each time. It was also doing it under 8.0.2.  My iPhone and iPad handle this fine. It's only the MacBook to the iPhone that fails, and only on email.

  • I have an AirPort Express, iPhone 5, and MacBook (late 2010). How do I see the graphical overview of my network?

I have an AirPort Express, iPhone 5, and MacBook (late 2010). How do I see the graphical overview of my network? (I can't seem to find a way to see it).
My computer is acting....well, strange.  I can't put my finger on it but it doesn't seem right.  Menus look skewed.  Some applications look like they're trying to disguise themselves as apple (no consistant window formats).  Airplay turns on and off on my devices on it's own.  And some locked system preference seem to unlock themselves, or won't even grey-out after I lock them.
I have changed my password many times but the issue keeps coming back.  I feel like I'm going crazy - but I know that something just isn't right...maybe someone's been hacking me? (I have no idea why...)
Anyway, maybe I could have stemmed from an improper setup of my wireless network.
    Any thoughts?
Also, right now, when I just signed into apple communities....
I have an iCloud email address that is accociated with my 1 and ONLY Apple ID...
It seems to have been working but...
When I loged in here it only saw my:
                                  OLD MacBookPro
                                  3 Old iPods
My new MacMini with OS X Sever (Server is currently turned off)
Could my Apple ID be confusing my MacBook (which I'm currently using) as an old iPod or my old MacBookPro?
I doesn't even see my iPad (1st generation), or my iPhone 5
Also, the Mac App store is giving me the option to download Mountain Lion??? I already have version 10.8.3...
Can anyone perform an analysis on my account and computer?  I have been to the Apple Store 6 seperate time and the problem was not resolved (after 6 COMPLETE hard drive wipes).
    PLEASE HELP!

i guess you could put the aiport utility app on your iphone, click on the aiport express there, it will show you how many devices are connected to it and the mac addresses of those devices.

  • Network HP Laserjet is no longer accessible by my iMac and Macbooks after OSX upgrade.

My HP Laserjet 4100n is no longer accessible over my wired/wireless network from my iMac and Macbooks.  This is new since I upgraded to OSX 10.6.8.  The printer works fine from my old windows laptop.  Thanks in advance for any help.

appears that apple has changed SMB code, and now its not possible login from windows on mac.
i installed snow leopard and now works fine.
apple is capable to make it run paying new license of smb code, but isnted of this, apple has created new protocol smbx and now, all others need to adapt your code to apple..
bad movement.. i am thinking sell imac and no back to apple anymore..

  • Can't run both PBG4 and Macbook on same TC network

I am trying to connect both a pbg4 and macbook core duo to my network using newly purchased time capsule. I first used Airport Utility from macbook hard wired via ethernet and set up the network. I have an AsDsl network with an old Westell Modem that always works in bridge mode and connects to my ISP via PPPoE. I used to use an US Robotics 8054 wireless router into whose WAN port I would plug in the modem.
I set up the TC as the main router, enabling my password at my ISP. Everything worked like a charm with the Macbook. When I tried to connect the PBG4, no luck. No matter what I did the PBG4 couldn't get the TC.
So I attached the US robotics to the one of the TC LAN ports. Using my old network, the pbg4 can access the TC and the internet. The macbook cannot access the TC at all.
I think this might be a DHCP problem. I think my set up doesn't allow more than one computer to be on the web. Also, something about the US robotics network makes the TC network invalid.
    Any thoughts?

if you have two hard drives the easiest might be to install panther on the second hard drive. this way you don't have top partition anything. make sure the drive is properly formatted it should be formatted mac os extended journaled with APM partition scheme. then just boot from the Panther install disk and install panther on the second drive. note that this will only work if your mac originally came with panther. did it?
to switch between installs you can change the startup disk in system preferences->startup disk. then reboot. alternatively, reboot normally and hold option at the chime. this will boot you into startup disk manager where you can choose which drive to boot from.

You need OS X 10.8 mountain lion, mirror is a feature of that OS and you need to buy it from the app store, OS X 10.7.5 does not do it.
If you don't want to change visit www.airparrot.com a third party app that can do it.

Troubleshoot the network as that is likely what is causing the issue.
Also, temporarily disable the firewall on the Mac and disable IPV6 on the computer.
