Having trouble creating NetRestore images.

I am pulling out what little hair I have on this one, so any help is greatly appreciated.
I am creating a NetRestore image of a 10.8.2 laptop, connected (firewaire) to a server running 10.8.2. System Image Utility does it's thing, says it's done. I can make it availlable.
This is where the hilarity ensues.
It ends up being a NetBoot image. No matter what settings I check, whether I use the "custom" option or not, every image I have made that should have ended up a NetRestore image, boots the laptops I am trying to image with the very same image, but only as a NetBoot.
I even attempted to make a NetInstall image from my Mountain Lion installer, and it does the same exact thing and it ends up making a NetBoot image.
All created images end up in a .nbi folder, all in the correct folder to be served from.
Please tell me I am missing something simple, I cannot keep creating an image of the same computer expecting a different result. Isn't that the definition of insanity?
Help?

I'm fumbling through this process as well and find it incredible that there is practically nothing from Apple which documents the full process that is required of us.  All I have been able to find are a few paragraphs which tell me that I want NETBOOT images for getting my computers up to the point of being imaged and that I want NETRESTORE images for cloning of these machines.  Apart from that I feel as though I'm left on my own to figure out HOW I'm supposed to make it work.
That being said, I can't tell you what is wrong in your specific case but I can offer two suggestions:
1)  I was told on 3/1/13 by a senior apple enterprise guy that you can't perform the IMAGE creation on the server if the two machines have different hardware.  Lets say you have your laptop connected to an imac running the server app...you can't boot your laptop into TARGET DISK MODE (TDM) with firewire/thunderbolt to the imac and run the SYSTEM IMAGE UTILITY and expect the process to give you what you desire.  I've proven to myself that you can do it but I was told flat out that this won't work because the machine that runs the SIU will build an image for that type of hardware and you can't then push the image out to a different machine.  So in this case you end up with an imac image that you couldn't deploy to your laptops, even though the source image came from a laptop.
Apparently you will need to use a 2nd laptop in this scenario to run the SIU; or you can boot the machine onto another volume and run the SIU from that volume against the source volume.  You could do this by booting the machine into recovery mode using R at startup and use the restore options to put a clean O/S onto an external drive-then boot to that drive and run SIU against your source.
2) I've found something called the PENN STATE MACADMINS
http://macadmins.psu.edu
they have published lengthy videos and associated PDFs of those presentations which are supposed to help folks like us.  The problem that I'm running into with what is currently posted is that it is for 10.7, not 10.8.  I'm currently wading through it and trying my best to work out the differences myself.

  • Trouble Creating Padded Images for iMovie

i am having trouble creating "padded" images to add to iMovie 09.  I followed the directions here (https://discussions.apple.com/message/10699725?messageID=10699725#10699725?messa geID=10699725) which recommend the following:
Set up an Automator Workflow to
    1. Ask for Photos (You must select one or more photos and hit Select - you can make this easier by putting them in an album beforehand)
    2. Copy Finder Items (give it a folder to copy to- so you can find them easily)
    3. Pad Images. (put a check mark in "scale image before padding" and set for dimensions of your project.
Hit Run and a dialog box will come up asking you to select photos. When you are finished, press SELECT and the Automator script will keep running.
However, each time I run the script I get the following error: The action "Pad Images" was not supplied with the required data."
My files are .jpg and I am running OS X.  Any suggestions on what I might be doing wrong?

If you want a quick response it might make sense to try and contact user TessB directly. I say that only as that person was the one that proposed the Automater Workflow workaround, and that's not exactly something here can answer (Maybe the folks in another forum related to Autmator might be able to help). Unfortunately some solutions aren't as generic or easy to use for everyone as they are for the person who has written them up. I call it the "Works for Me" problem.

  • I am new to Mac and am having trouble with uploading images from my pictures folder to Facebook and other share sites- some of my images are accessible while others are seemingly locked....

I am new to Mac and am having trouble up loafing images from my pictures folder to photography sites and Facebook. Some of the saved images are accessible, while others are not, ( they are light colored and cannot be uploaded) I am not saving them any differently.

    Hi Robodisko,
    Thanks for your prompt reply......
I often proof my work in preview then edit images in photoshop and rename from there.  The dsc images are renamed to correlate the name of the class etc.  i.e. dcs_001 is saved as the file name required 7A.jpeg etc.
The file names are required to correlate what is what and so on..........

Apple Mail isn't going to change the format of any of your attachments. it isn't going to corrupt them either.
Exchange is a transport protocol and server. The issue you describe is not related to Exchange.
There are many different versions of Microsoft Outlook in use and they all have e-mail bugs. Different versions have different bugs. Some Apple Mail hack to get around a bug in Outlook 2003 may cause the same message to be problematic in Outlook 2000. Fix them both and another issue will cause trouble in Outlook 2007. You can't fix this. Apple can't fix this. Microsoft can and has but that is irrelevant if your recipients are using older versions.
One specific problem is that Apple Mail always sends image attachments inline, as images, not as iconized files. You can change this with Attachment Tamer. Just be aware that use of this software will break other things such as Stationery. E-mail is just a disaster. To date, no one outside of Apple has ever implemented the e-mail standards from 1993. Apple has continually changed its e-mail software to be more compatible with the de-facto standards that Netscape and Microsoft have unilaterally defined and people documented as "standards" after the fact. The e-mail messages that Apple Mail sends are 100% correct and do not violate any of the original standards from 1993 or the Microsoft/Netscape modifications. The problem is entirely bugs and limitations in various versions of Outlook.

Quickest way is to drag a clip into the New Item icon (left bottom corner Project window)
You can also right click on the clip in the Project window and create sequence from clip (or something in that order, not at my editing machine right now).

  • System image utility set to create NetRestore Image, creates Netboot Disk instead

Hi, I'm trying to create some OS X 10.10.1 netrestore images and no matter what I do with selecting options SIU makes the image a netboot image instead of a netrestore image. Has anyone any suggestions?
As a workaround I've created my image and used the .dmg with an old working netrestore image.

I am having trouble sharing images via email with Aperture 3. No matter what size I have in the preferences, the image is thumbnail size. I have taught many how to use GUI-based computers.  The number of controls they are aware of on the screen always progresses, usually linearly with the amount of time they spend actively learning the GUI.  Beginners are totally flummoxed that windows can hide other windows.  A step beyond that, they are amazed that they can resize windows using the mouse cursor.  Those two are trivial to most users today, but they illustrate 1. that there is nothing "intuitive" about the GUI, and 2. that the amount one perceives is dependant on the amount one knows. IME, this has nothing to do with age, and everything to do with experience using a GUI.
Here is a good hint:  if you are using a Mac and can't figure out how to do something, look for something to click.    If you find something that seems promising, try "{Option}+clicking".
The interface is richer than any one person can master.  Frank's statement "most times we all fail to see everything " is, imho, _always_ true.  We never see everything, even in the grossly limited resolution of our computer screens.

  • Creating NetRestore Image of OS X Yosemite (10.10) from Mac Mini Server Running Mavericks (10.9)

    Hello all,
We are attempting to create a NetRestore image of a Macbook Pro running Yosemite (10.10) from a Mavericks (10.9) Mac Mini running OS X Server. Previously we connected a Macbook Pro in target mode to our Mac Mini (both running Mavericks) using System Image Utility to create a NetRestore SP0 from which we could deploy to all of the computers in our lab running Mavericks. We did this as a method to update the applications on each iMac locally from the hosted NetRestore image we created. We are now receiving several new iMacs and Mac Pros running Yosemite (10.10) native and we wish to use the same process to update these machines from our Mac Mini (Mavericks) running OS X Server.
We are now trying create a NetRestore image from a native Yosemite Macbook Pro using System Image Utility on our Mac Mini (running Mavericks) however when the Yosemite Macbook Pro is connected in target mode, System Image Utility does not recognize the volume although it is recognized by our Mac mini (e.g., the yellow-orange image icon is displayed on the Mac Mini's desktop). Some of our lab computers are still running Mavericks, and my understanding is that Mavericks NetRestore Images cannot be created from a Mac Mini with OS X Server running Yosemite.
Must we upgrade our Mac mini from Mavericks to Yosemite for System Image Utility to recognize our Yosemite Macbook Pro (connected in target mode) in order to create a Yosemite NetRestore Image?
Note: We know there are better alternatives (e.g., Munki) to deploy updates to our machines via server and are working to establish a more convenient process, but this is the method we have been comfortable using before running into the above issue.
    Thanks all!

You could use DeployStudio to 'serve' both Yosemite and Mavericks images from your Mac mini which can still run Mavericks. You would also use DeployStudio to make an image of the MacBook once it has been loaded and then this image can be restored to multiple machines.

  • Having trouble creating the windows 8 installation usb using bootcamp

    Hello Everyone,
I am trying to install windows 8 on my early 2013 MacBook Pro retina. I am using Mavericks if that matters. I have got the iso file that I need but I am having troube creating the install disk/usb. Everytime I go to create it, I get an error message telling me that the drive could not be formatted properly. I have looked up possible solutions but nothing seems to work, I have unmounted the iso file, tried putting it on the Mac's HD but nothing I do works. Please help.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
After using Boot Camp, your computer will start always in Windows. To start in OS X, just hold the X key while your Mac is starting. If you want to start always in OS X, after starting in OS X, go to System Preferences > Startup Disk, and select the OS X partition.
By default, Windows can't read the filesystem that OS X uses for the partition, so that's why you can't access to the OS X partition. Also, you should have burnt the drivers onto a DVD or a USB drive.
As you have already downloaded the drivers, after starting in OS X, copy them to a USB drive or burn them into a DVD. Then, start in Windows and install them. Note that Windows 8 requires Boot Camp 5 drivers, that you can only get from Boot Camp Assistant if you are running OS X 10.8.3. If you want to be sure that you install the correct drivers, I recommend you to download again the Boot Camp 5 drivers from the Apple webpage > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1638

  • Trouble Creating System Image in Windows 8.1

My system: Satellite P55-A5312 with 750GB HDD, Windows 8.1 (upgraded from pre-installed 8.0), BIOS fw 1.90 (just updated)
Tried to create System Image: Start ==> Search ==> File History ==> System Image Backup ( in lower left corner of the screen).  Successfully finds the 1TB backup drive (newly formatted at NTFS) attached via USB.  Message says 204GB of space will be needed to store the image. (Note: 1TB is almost 5 times what is needed).
Start Backup ==> "The Backup Failed", "There is not enough disk space to create the volume shadow copy on the storage location, etc.).
I found the following thread in this forum: http://forums.toshiba.com/t5/System-Recovery-and-Recovery/System-Image-Fails-on-Windows-8-1-Pro/m-p/...
and am curious what the following recommendation means: "To work around this problem, increase the size of the OEM partition on the backup drive."
What OEM partition?  My backup drive has a single NTFS partition consuming the entire capacity of the HDD.  What am I doing wrong?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

After increasing the size of 1 partition, the System Image utility completed without error.  To fully confirm, I need to try an image restore.
The long answer is noteworthy (refer to the attached).  I used 3 different methods to query partition size and usage.
    1. Disk Management shows that 4 of the 5 partiions are 100% free space.  What I don't understand is how the System Image utility of Windows 8.1 understands the partition sizes/usage but Disk Management does not.
    2.  Macrium Reflect gives what appears to be an accurate representation of the partitions and their size/usage.  It also includes a (hidden?) partition not shown in Disk Management, thus 6 instead of 5 partitions.
    3. MiniTool Partition Wizard agrees for the most part with Macrium Reflect with two notable exceptions.  It shows the 128MB partition has zero free space (vs 113.7MB = 89% free space using Macrium Reflect).  This is a BIG difference.  Also, the C partition showed slightly different usage than Macrium Reflect.
In the end, I used MiniTool Partition Wizard to modify 1 partition only (increase the 350MB partition to 414MB, resulting in a little more than the mandatory 50MB free space).  The System Image operation then completed without error.
What baffles me is why 3 different utilities give different results of partition usage (I think they all agree on partition size).  I would have never thought that determining partition usage was akin to rocket science, but perhaps it is...

  • Is it better to install windows on the same mac hard drive or use the second hard drive bay as it's own? Im also using deploy studio and am having trouble creating a workflow to assign the bay.

Have mac pros with 1tb drives in tem. Trying to figure out imaging via deploy studio.

For the easist install and problem solving having W7 on it's own disk would be the best way to go.
The only thing you need to do is either take out the lower # drives ahead of the future Windows disk or put the Windows HD in bay/slot #1. (or just take out all but the future W7 disk and install it manually works too)
The easiest way would be to put the W7 drive in slot slot/bay #1 then you can still use BC Assistant to install the drivers and such.
After the install you can have the Windows drive in any slot you want.
I'm not familier with Deploy Studio so can't help you beyond this.
