Having trouble installing windows 8.1 on my new iMac using boot camp

Hi,
I'm having an issue with trying to install windows 8.1 on my iMac.
OS X Yosemite version 10.10.1
iMac (27-inch, Late 2013)
3.2 GHz Intel Core i5
8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
1TB Storage
I'm getting the error:
"Boot Camp only supports Windows 7 or later installation on this platform. Please use an ISO file for Windows 7 or later installation."
I purchased and downloaded the Microsoft Windows 8.1 Upgrade Download from snaggstuff.com... I guess I'm wondering if it's an ISO file or if it's not is it possible to make it an ISO file?
Not sure what to do. Please help.
Thank you in advance,
-Heather

It depends on your uses. See > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3321 Windows 8 works properly in Boot Camp, always that your iMac is compatible > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US You can only use the 64-bit Windows 8 edition.
Respecting to your processor, you may want to contact with Apple, as they may have sent you the iMac with a wrong processor

  • To install Windows 8 OS on a new iMac using Boot Camp, what size "partition" should I allocate for Windows on a system with 3TB Fusion drive?

I am trying to install Windows on a new iMac w/3TB Fusion drive. The system crashed on my first attempt but appears to have partitioned the drive correctly before crashing???  So, what size partition does Windows 8 need to operate effectively?  Is "more" better??? or just over-kill?  And, has anyone installed Winodow 8 on an iMac...and how did it work?  Would apps like "Parallel Desktop" or "VM Ware Fusion" be a good idea and troubleless?
I will try again but not too confident that it may get worse before it gets better.
    Regards....?
P.S.  I configured this iMac with the i7 processor 3.5GHz with Turbo Boost to 3,9GHz.  When I select "About this Mac" it diplays my i7 processor as a 3.4GHz instead.  Do you think they ran out of the i7 3.5GHz and shoved a i5 3.4Ghz in the iMac to meet deliver schedule???  I there a way to check the real-time speed of my processor??.

  • Cannot install Windows XP Professional on my MacBook Pro using Boot Camp.

Cannot install Windows XP Professional on my MacBook Pro using Boot Camp. When I get to the point of inserting the Windows disc and clicking 'Install' at the Boot Camp Assistant screen, it keeps telling me that it cannot find the Install Disc. The installation disc I am using is a new full install disc. I have tried to do the same thing using a Windows 7 disc with the same results. Does anyone have any answers. I am getting desperate!

Perhaps you could offer a suggestion then.

  • Can I install windows 7 on a potable Hard Drive using boot camp? or any other way to do so?? need help for college please

I need to use windows in order to use Visual C++ for college but I don't have enough space in my internal Hard Drive so I want to install windows 7using boot camp or any other method on a portable hard drive and boot from it.
Please help I need it as soon as possible for school. Thanks

You can't boot Windows natively except on internal drives.
You can use a VM and put the VM image (VHD) anywhere any drive you want.
You are way too low on disk space, seriously so. And no room - even Windows and Mac OS should be warning and balking already.
"emulator" is an old-school term, even true, running a Guest OS under Mac's as a virtual machine, shared resources (RAM, processor) is easier but not the same performance level as running natively.

  • Having trouble installing Windows 8 drivers

I know this has been asked a million times but I couldn't find a specific answer to my problem. I previously had Windows 7 on my boot camp partition and then I decided to install Windows 8 a couple months ago. I'm just now getting around to installing the drivers and I'm having issues.
Long story short, I downloaded the Windows Support Software onto my external drive (formatted MS-DOS(FAT). I then boot into my Win 8 partition and open up my external drive. There are two folders "$WinPEDrivers$" and "Bootcamp." I open up the bootcamp folder and run "setup." The setup installs the video card drivers and then prompts me to install Bootcamp Version 5.0. I try to do so and it will not let me procceed. I get the error "Boot Camp requires that your computer is running Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows Vista." I dont completely understand this at all considering it is the latest version of Boot Camp I am installing on Windows 8. Any help would be much appreciated. Installing these drivers are turning into a pain.

    always include which Mac.
depends on things like did you just install over 7?
how much free space? have you gone into disk cleanup and removed the old Windows?
    do you run CCleanup?
Clean up the TEMP folder is always a good idea

  • I'm having trouble installing Windows 7

Really puzzling problem, I hope someone can help me with it.
I'm trying to install Windows 7 via boot camp onto my 27" iMac (late 2009).
I have created the partition using boot camp and start the installation process with the Window 7 Home Premium install disc in the SmartDrive.
After the computer starts to reboot, the Smartdrive ejects the Windows install disc and thus aborts the installation.
I checked the Drive and it is working fine.  The Windows 7 install disc boots fine in another computer.
Any advise at all is sincerely appreciated.
BTW, Apple Care says the install discs may be bad but as I say, they work just fine on another computer.
    Thank you, everyone.

Sorry I can't help but I would recommend posting in the Boot Camp forum. That is where the people that use it and MS Windows hang out. This is a general iMac forum and most folks here don't use Boot Camp or MS Windows. You can find that forum at:

  • I Am Having Trouble Installing Windows On Mac Pro.... Please Help!

I have gotten as far as installing boot camp and then running windows CD when I start the computer, but all my progress is stopped when I come to a screen durring the setup of XP that says.....
" The following list shows the existing partitions and unpartitioned space on this computer.
Use the up and down arrow keys to select an iteam from the list.
. To set up windows xp on the selected iteam press enter
. To create a partition in the unpartitioned space press, C
. To delete the selected partition, press d

  • Having trouble installing Windows 7 on external optical disk drive

My internal optical drive doesnt work so i ran out and bought and LG external Optical drive. I Reinstalled mac os 10.6 and created a 45gb partition in bootcamp. When i try to install windows, at the gray screen it flashes a folder symbol and a circle with a line through it like it cant find the boot up disk in the external disk drive. The version of windows 7 im using is a burned .iso that i got from my boss so i could work on my laptop, i have tried an official windows 7 disk and that produced the same error. Im really not sure what to do other than go to the apple store and the nearest one is 100 miles away so i preferably dont want to do that. Any help would be appreciated. thanks.

Sorry, it is not clear to me  if you are trying to install Windows on an external optical drive or what. Read the Bootcamp installation and help manuals http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/

  • Having Trouble installing Windows XP on Macbook

Hi! I've been trying to install Windows XP Service Pack 2 for the past 2 weeks now (first via VM ware fusion then with boot camp) but i keep getting the same stop error message with both:
"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
    SESSION3INITIALIZATIONFAILED
If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen,
restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow
    these steps:
Check to make sure and new hardware or software is properly installed.
If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer
for any Windows updates you might need.
If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware
or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.
If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart
your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then
    select Safe Mode.

After spending hours searching the web for a solution, I found out from the website below that it may be an issue with the original windows xp install disk so i did exactly what it says-- i made a copy using disk utility and burned it to a new disk but i still get the same error message. i did this numerous times. however the past few times, i couldn't even create a disk image because it kept giving me an "input/output error."
    http://forum.onmac.net//showthread.php?t=837&page=2
Also, many times when i reboot with the install disk, the Macbook would spit out the disk on its own. Could it be an issue with my Macbook's optical drive?
I was so happy to get rid of the IBM Thinkpad that my college gave me so i can finally return to the world of Mac when I bought my Macbook after graduation, but now my job is requiring me to use software that is only compatible with windows so i need to windows xp running. my mother might get a new laptop to replace her ibook. i wanted her to get a macbook as well but she offered me the alternative of buying a PC so i can use that for work (i work from home). I don't want to do that unless its absolutely necessary, mainly because it is so much more conveniant to have windows on my macbook.
Any help would be appreciated. Windows has always driven me crazy!!!!!!!

    Hi Anthony Kraljic,
This error is perhaps because your disk (HDD) has an error, Try to recreate the partition by deleting it first.(Also format it as NTFS during the windows install)
    I hope this helps.

  • Having trouble installing windows 8.

Tried putting windows 8 iso on flash drive from a pc and starting from there but it displays an error occurred while formatting the disk. please help.
I bought windows 8 and thought it would be a relatively simple process to put the windows 8 iso on a flash drive and install from there. however nothing seems to be working.

Try using Bootcamp Assistant - it's in Applications > Utilities and is designed to help installing Windows on Macs.
Read (or print out) the instructions beforehand.

  • I'm having trouble installing windows xp

I believe that I just installed Windows XP, using bootcamp. I can see that bootcamp has partitioned my harddrive, and that the new partition now contains a set of files including one folder marked 'Windows'. However, when I restart my computer I am not provided with an option to startup in Windows mode... I was wondering if anyone's encountered a similar issue? Am I doing something wrong?
Also, I should mention that my computer automatically restarted after (supposedly) installing windows. However, rather than taking me to OS X, or giving me the option to start in either Windows or OS X, it began the installation process again. Yet when I proceeded to select the bootcamp partition as the installation location I was told that 'that partition already contains an OS'. I then restarted the computer and ejected the Windows installation disk, at which point my IMac resarted in OS X.
Any advice would be most welcome.
    Thanks!

When you restart are you holding the option key down to get to the boot screen? That's where you choose which OS you want to boot.
