Having trouble moving mail messages from one user to another

I am trying to move mail messages from one user to another on my Macbook, and I cannot seem to do it. I've tried archive, but I don't think I'm doing it right. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Noreen

I had to go to the Mac store to get the answer to this one... i was archiving correctly, but you need to save the mbox files to your desktop, then move them to the shared folder, that way all users have access. I also had to edit the permissions on the files, as the user i wanted to have the emails didn't have permission to even look at the files.

  • Moving mail messages from one account to another sends to inbox, not IMAP folder

I have many email addresses (setup via Google apps) but I generally store all of my emails on one standard Gmail IMAP account. It makes looking for old emails easier IMO. Here's what my workflow should look like:
I get an email on account B, reply with account B, then file that email into account B's folder on account A.
Unfortunately, that workflow has been broken for a very long time now and 10.8.3 didn't fix it.
Here's what that workflow actually does:
I get an email on account B, reply with account B, then file that email into account B's folder on account A, the email ends up in the inbox of account A, I then have to drag the email into account B's folder on account A *again* so it actually sticks.  The tricky part is that Mail seems to have the message in two locations until I
Instead of moving the email directly to account B's folder on account A, it goes to the inbox of account A. I'm really tired of having to move a message twice just to get it into the right folder. I was hoping 10.8.3 would fix this but it's still broken. I believe I started noticing the issue in Lion.
I only use Gmail IMAP accounts if that helps. I've re-installed from scratch to eliminate any user account / upgrade issues that could've caused the problem.
I would really appreciate any suggestions or confirmation of the problem from other people so I can file another bug report (did that already but they never understood the issue).

    Hi,
Locate your Mail folder via this path - Home/Library/Mail and copy it to the same location on the second machine - when you get the message about overwriting say yes. (make sure Mail is not open on either machine)
I f you're nervous about overwriting the corrupted copy - simply move it out of Home/Library first - say to the desktop. When you copy the new Mail folder over, and you know it works - delete the desktop copy.

  • Move mail messages from one Acount to another...

    Hi,
I have several mail accounts on my iPhone (iOS 4.3.5) one Exchange ActiveSync and 2 GMail Accounts. I am able to Move mails from the ActiveSync Account to any of the Gmail Accounts, I can move messages in between the two GMail Accounts, but it is not possible to move messages from one of the GMail accounts to the Exchange ActiveSync Account. It fails with the message: "Unable to Move Message - The message could not be moved to the mailbox Inbox.". Is this a known limitation? I can reproduce this with different devices and different people from my company. It is always the same behavior.
    Thanks in Advance.

Some possible options in no particular order:
    (1) Copy the folders to a SUB Thumb Drive.
    (2) Use Dropbox
    (3) If your Macs are compatible with AirDrop see list:
MacBook Pro (Late 2008 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2010 or newer)
    MacBook (Late 2008 or newer)
    iMac (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Mini (Mid 2010 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2009 with AirPort Extreme card, or Mid 2010)
Activate AirDrop on both Macs to Move/Copy your Mail Folders.

  • Moving Mail files from One Computer to Another

I had to swap out my wife's laptop while her primary machine was in the shop. Now that the primary is fixed, I need to move all her files back to it. But I am having a heckuva time.
Using Mail's "Import Mailboxes" function, the relevant Mail folders (in the Users/Library folder of the secondary computer) display the red "minus" sign, which means the primary computer doesn't have permission to use them.
However, when I go to the secondary, open Get Info on those folders and give "Everyone" Read & Write access... it does not solve the problem.
    What gives?
Same sort of thing happens when I just try to drag the folders over.
Primary computer is an iBook G4 running OSX 10.5. Secondary computer (from which I am trying to get the files) is an iBook G3 running 10.4

    Man, what a hassle.
First... the account on each computer has the same username AND short name. Yet, when "Read & Write" is entered in the Get Info box for all of the involved folders, I still can't access them from the G4.
One thing I tried was to duplicate the Mail Folder and the plist to a separate partition on the hard drive... figuring I could just move them over. At first this did not work because I still was denied access.
THEN, I connected (via share) to the G3 with a different account name (mine, not my wife's). Note that I was still logged in to the G4 with her name... but when I clicked on the "connect" button to access, the G3, I logged in with my name.
Suddenly, all those duped folders on the partition were accessible. So I duped them over to the G4 in the appropriate places.
At first I got a message saying Mail could not start because it keeps info on where it stores things in the MAIL folder, but that folder was inaccessible to me. It told me to change the permissions in Get Info. This I did, and then everything appeared as it should.
So... I got it done.... but I still want to know why Wife Account on one computer could not access things in the identical Wife Account on the other computer.

  • Moving mail files from one Mac to another

I have my most complete Mail files on my MacBook, with e-mails going back several years. I want to copy all this data into Mail on my Mac Pro. Both computers are running OS 10.5.7.
Can these files be transferred through MobileMe? It would be a very large transfer.
Can I move the files with a thumb drive? Where is the data located? In the Mail application?
    Thanks in advance!

quit mail on both computers and copy the folder /users/username/library/mail and the file /users/username/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist from the first computer to the second. then start Mail on the second computer and it will look exactly as it did on the first one.

  • Moving mail from one user to another

I am moving from my old iMac to a newer eMac. The eMac had been used by a housemate for Mail, and I have now set up a separate user account for them so they can access this older Mail. However, I am having trouble getting the "Mail" folder into the new user account.
I found it in the first user ~/Library/ and dragged it to the "Shared" user folder. Then I switched to the second user; where I can see it but not open it.
I then tried putting it directly in the MacHD directory, with the same result.
How do I move the info from one user to another?

How does one change ownership of a file?
The only way to do it in the Finder is doing File > Get Info (⌘I), changing the Ownership & Permissions settings, then clicking Apply to enclosed items. Problem is, this changes more than is needed and is not the most appropriate way of doing it.
Alternatively, Terminal can be used to issue a command that changes what must be changed and only that. The exact command to use would depend on what the situation exactly is and what exactly do you want to do, though, which I don’t know yet...
I want to move this out.
(I will later move mine in from another computer).
    Not sure what you mean.

  • Problems importing mail from one user to another on same computer

    Hi,
I work from home so I created a new account on my computer so I could have a personal user and a business user. That way maybe I won't always end up working when I'm trying to relax. So I want to bring all my old work emails over the the new work account. But when I copy the mail files to the new user account and then try to import, the folders all have red circles with minus signs. I gather that this has something to do with permissions, but when I change the owner to the new user, they still have the red circles. I also tried just moving the whole mail folder over to the new user, but it's "read only".
Both users are administrators. I'm running OS 10.4.4.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

    Hi Andrew.
What you tried to transfer the Mail folder from one user to the other should have worked, except I believe you didn't properly change ownership of the files and folders involved.
    7. open new user Mail
    8. Mail asks me to set up an email account
This probably happened because you didn't change ownership of the com.apple.mail.plist file. If Mail doesn't have access permission to write to that file, it just deletes the file and creates a new one (Mail can delete the file because doing that requires write permissions for the directory the file is in, which it has). As a result of re-creating the preferences file, Mail asks you to set up your accounts from scratch all over again.
    14. change the ownership of the mail folder to the
new user, but I still can't look inside the folder
and it has the red circle with the minus sign.
It looks like you tried changing ownership of the enclosing Mail folder only. Ownership of all the items within it must be changed as well. Unfortunately, there is no way to do this properly in the Finder, as the Apply to enclosed items button in the Get Info window also overwrites access permissions, not just the changes you make to ownership. Usually, this is wrong, as a different set of permissions may be appropriate for each item. In the particular case of the Mail folder, however, you can come close to doing the right thing as follows:
    1. In the Finder, go to HOME/Library/. Locate the Mail folder, select it and choose File > Get Info (⌘I). Under Ownership & Permissions, expand Details by clicking on it.
    2. Change the settings as follows (you may need to click on the lock icon to authenticate first). Owner: username, with "Read & "Write" access permissions; Group: username, with "Read only" access permissions; Others: "No Access".
    3. Click on the Apply to enclosed items button at the bottom of the Get Info window.
    4. Change Group access back to "No Access", which probably was (or should be) the initial setting when you opened the Info window.
    5. Close the Get Info window.
The right way to (recursively) change ownership of the Mail folder without altering access permissions would be issuing the following command in Terminal:
    sudo chown -R username:username ~/Library/Mail
And while you're at it, you may as well use Terminal to change ownership of the preferences file:
    sudo chown username:username ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist

Well your code is unreadable because you didn't post it properly, but I'd guess you've fallen into the old multiple-delete trap in a new way. It's like this:
To start with you have messages numbered 0, 1, and 2, let's say. So you write a loop that lets i run from 0 to 2 and delete message number i in the loop. What really happens? The first time through the loop you delete message number 0, after which you are left with messages numbered 0 and 1. The second time through the loop you delete message number 1, after which you are left with message 0 only. The third time through the loop you delete message 2, which isn't there and you get that message.
That's just a guess, I didn't have the patience to read that ugly unformatted code. There are two ways to do the multiple delete properly, if that's actually your problem: (1) run the loop upwards from 0 and always delete message 0; (2) run the loop downwards from N-1 to 0 and delete message i.

I am having trouble moving a video from iTunes on my PC to my iPod (4th gen). Is it a problem that it is in the "Home Videos" section? I go into the "Home Videos" sections and drag the video that I want so that the bar comes up, move it over to the device and let go. All that happens is it flashes a few times and then nothing. No error or anything.

Make your user library visible and see if you can find it.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library.

  • How can I move my iPad's iTunes backup from one user to another?

Is it possible to move my iPad's iTunes backup from one user to another, so as to change which user the iPad is syncing to without deleting any app data? Currently the iPad is synced to one user on my iMac, and I would like to transfer it so that it will sync with a different user on the same iMac (using iTunes, of course). I'd like to replace content from the old user's iTunes library with my user (eg. music, movies), but I don't want to loose app data in the process if I can avoid it.
I have tried to use the pathway /Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup but my iMac doesn't seem to have a MoblieSync folder. I wouldn't know what to do with the backup anyway though.
Can anyone help me or is this request too complicated, difficult, or impossible? Thanks for your help!

The Apple Document covers this. See the footnotes of my google docs
I've done this, it is easy, but takes time and patience.
On the existing mac with OSX and Configurator:
    ========================================
    - run disk utility and verify your disks are ok, a must
    - make note of the user logged in when using configurator  such as "bob"
    - connect a new or newly reformatted USB formatted for Apple
    - run time machine and backup to the USB
    - Take the mac off the network,
    - Buy a new mac
    - setup the mac with a new logon account like Paul or  "bob2"   do not use BOB !!
    - finish the new purchase setup, get to your desktop
    - now run the migraiton assistant  moving bob from the USB to the new mac
    - reboot, logon as bob, launch configurator and connect just one ipad.  Test

Yes, Imap systems store all mail on the server, all connected clients are synchronized to the server (the mail itself stays on the server)
... regarding the POP accounts. Do you simply want the contents are or you planning on continued use of these accounts on the new machine?
    Continued use.
Export each mailbox from the old machine to the desktop, to do so select a mailbox, rght click and choose Export, repeat for all others. Move the mailboxes to the new machine'sdesktop.
I suggest setting up the new accounts before importing the mail from the old machine.
In mail choose File>Import Mailboxes, choose the ones on the desktop (one at a time) a new mailbox will appear in Mail called Imported, you can move mail from there back to the correct mailbox in the POP accounts.
