Now Logic is clearly shut down but still when I try and shut down the external drive it says Logic is not shut down. Please help!!!!!!!!!!!

hi

1)before you shut down your external hard disc always eject it
2)if u got both ff400 and lacie hd connected via firewire try to connect one (i suggest the hd) via express card 34 (i bought one that is not so expensive and it works perfect)
let me know, good luck

  • Macbook Pro having trouble shutting down/waking up

Okay, just to clarify, yes my Macbook Pro is 4 years old, but I don't think I've done anything to it that would really cause this.
My problem: First, when I boot up, sometimes I get a "Please restart your computer" message as the screen turns from blue to gray. It often takes at least 2 times before I can actually log in without a problem. And recently, I've been getting that message while I'm booted up... but only a couple of times.
Then my mac has also been having trouble shutting down and waking up. When I click "shut down" it takes a good, long while for it to shut down, if it does it at all. Again, recently I've had to just hold down the power button to get it to shut off, which I'm sure isn't good for the computer. And if I shut my Macbook, as in putting down the screen, it makes that noise that happens right before the "DING" (that little shifty noise... I can't really describe it) several times while still shut. And when I go to open it up to get back to what I was doing, it won't wake up unless I press the power button, but sometimes I have to restart.
Is there something horribly wrong with my Mac or is this normal for an aged computer? And is it fixable without having to Archive and Repair (I really don't want to have to go through that again, especially now that I really need this computer)?
Thanks for your help and I'm sorry if this has been asked before or is a completely noobish question.

First question, how much free space do you have on the Hard Drive?
If less than 10 GB you're asking for trouble.
Have you booted off the Install Disk by holding the *d key* down at boot-up, (not the c key), and run the extended Apple HW Test? Some Install disks require holding the Option key at bootup to select the AHT. Some Macs came with separate AHT CDs.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Tiger Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.

  • Having trouble shutting down mac mini.

As of a few days ago, my mac mini is not shutting down properly. it spools endlessly, until I hold the button down, or un-plug. This problem has coincided with the addition of a Seagate Free agent GoFlex external hard drive. The external hard drive backed up files, then was unplugged. Don't know if the problem is coincidental or not.

Be a good idea now to make a backup. Or do this:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
If you are using an earlier version of OS X then do this instead:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Sometimes having trouble shutting down

Sometimes, lately, when I shut my computer down, it freezes on the last blue screen. After I choose "Shut down..." from the apple menu and choose "OK" the computer starts shutting down. Then my desktop icons go away, and USUALLY, I get a blue screen for a moment and then the computer shuts off. Sometimes, I get a little revolving icon similar to the one that shows on startup.
But on occasion, that's where the process stops. I come into the room some time later, and the blue screen is still there, with a frozen revolving icon.
The only thing that "corrects" it is holding down the power button.
Any thoughts as to what is happening?
(I shut down all my applications prior to shutting down)

  • Having Trouble Shutting Down

Hey guys- My comp doesn't seem to want to shut down (or restart). i.e. If I follow Apple>Shut Down>"OK", it will close out all my apps and act like its going to shut down, then just sits on the Finder. I checked out the activity monitor and can't find anything that would cause this (I'm not sure I'm allowed to post pictures or I'd get some screen shots up).
So I'm forced to manually shut down, which i cringe every time i do it. When I power back up it seems fine and shuts down normally, but if I were to wait a few days and then try to shut down I would have no such luck.
Anyone know what this could be?
Note: I used to experience the same thing on my macbook pro before i sold it. Could it be something I put on there?

Try doing some repairs and maintenance and setup a clone for emergency and backups.
Manual shutdown may corrupt most anything, not just the directory. "Seems" isn't a good indicator. Running FSCK immediately (single user mode) and Disk Warrior immediately (or TechTool Pro 4.6.x if running Leopard).
Clean out cache folders (Leopard Cache Cleaner)
Something you installed or do on both systems?
Start using CCC, SuperDuper, Disk Warrior etc on regular basis.

  • Trouble Shutting Down

There are times when I attempt to shut the computer down, it just hangs. I'll come back hours later and still see the computer on and running, but it doesn't wake up, there's nothing on the screen... I have to hold in the power button to turn it off. What's going on? Leopard on the PowerPC has been a rough transition.

I was having this problem in Tiger for several months. I had to force my computer to restart every time (by the way, you can hold Control and Command then press the Power key to reset immediately instead of having to shut down first).
But after installing Leopard, the problem has gone away. I did an Archive & Install so I would get a fresh copy of the OS, and that seemed to fix it.

each time i try syncing my ipod with itunes, it freezes itunes and i end up having to shut down my computer.  This started happening after the latest download and my latest purchase.  The latest purchase doesn't show up on my iPod and itunes freezes at synching step 2 on 2.  Any suggestions?

You should Reset your iPod, by
    1. Press Menu and Center button simultaneously for about 10 Secs till the Apple Logo comes ON.

If the above is okay, (can see Menu but no Music)
    4. Close iTunes and Reboot your PC.
    5. Start iTunes
    6. Connect the iPod to the Sync cable.

Did you purchase the Mac new?
You have 14 calendar days from the time your items are delivered to initiate a return as noted here.
Even though you are past the 14 day limit, if it were me, I'd take the Mac back and explain what's going on. Your Mac should work out of the box.

  • I have trouble shutting down my MacBook Pro using the normal way.

I have trouble shutting down my MacBook Pro, operating Mac OS X Snow Leopard. I click on the "Shut Down" button from the Apple Menu, the screen fades to blue and I get a scrolling wheel; this lasts up to more than two hours and I still don't get any result, so I end up holding down the Power Button until it turns off. Can somebody help me, please?

  • Shutting down external HD

A friend and I were having this discussion so I want expert help.
When I shut down my computer, which is rare as I just sleep it unless we're going away, I always turn off the external HD in Time Machine preferences and then shut it down. My friend shuts her computer down every night but does not do anything to the external HD. She's recently had trouble loosing her contact list. My question is: Would that have caused her to loose her contacts by not turning off her HD in sys. prefs. and should she shut the ext. HD down in sys. pref. before shutting down at night?
And, another thing, does leaving it in sleep mode make me any more vulnerable to hackers or am I safe leaving it on?
    TIA

The computer can't get hacked into when it's asleep; all network activity except for magic packets to wake the system up is suspended.

  • Having troubles reading usb external drives.

I have a macbook pro, mid 2010 is when I got it.  The issue I've ran into for about 6 months now is my usb external drives are not currently being recognized.  It's only external drives and thumb drives though.  My mac recognizes my iphone, charges my camera usb, lets me use a usb midi controller.  About six months ago I was having trouble connecting a usb dmx lighting interface.  I called the company and they sent me to a workaround and it worked.  http://groups.google.com/group/dmxis_users/browse_thread/thread/c5746c10c618bf19 ?hl=en_US
Ever since then, it's never been the same my external drives don't work.  I even took it to an apple store and replaced the internal boards.  (Sorry for not knowing specifics)  Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

That would explain your problem!  If you have a backup then see if it's on your backup.  Otherwise, you will need to restore it from your installer DVD using Pacifist:
How Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
A few of the basic OS X installed applications can be restored from the Optional Installs installer located in the Optional installs folder on your Installer DVD.  However, if what you need is not there then follow the instructions below.
How to Use Pacifist to Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive.  Use a simple utility like TinkerTool to toggle invisibility so you can see invisible items.  Alternatively, open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter the following:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes Press RETURN.
To turn off the display of invisible files repeat the above command substituting No for Yes.
The install packages are located in the /System/Installation/ folder on the DVD.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist from VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the missing item(s) from the file archives on your OS X installation DVD. The file archives are in the /System/Installations/ folder (use Go to Folder option in the Go menu of the Finder.)
Here are Four Basic ways to use Pacifist (courtesy of George Orville.)
    A. Drag a .pkg icon onto the Pacifist window .....proceed to step 7.
    B. Click on “Open Package ....” and navigate to package desired and click “Open” in the open/save window.....proceed to step 7.
    C. Insert Mac OS X installer CD and when it mounts, navigate to .... Menu->Go->Go to Folder. In the path field enter or paste ....
/Volumes/disc name/System/Installation/Packages (where disc name is the name of the CD/DVD that you inserted.
    • Click on the  "Go" button ..... • Drag a .pkg to Pacifist..... proceed to step 7.
The package you'll need will have to be discovered by trial and error, but for most applications you should start with the Essentials.pkg and/or Additional Essentials.pkg.
    D. Insert your Mac OS X install disk 1 .... and open Pacifist.
    1. In Pacifist, select "Open Mac OS X Install Packages" ... dialog may appear asking for disk 2, then disk 3 and finally disk 1 again.... {if DVD is not used)...If “Stop Loading” is selected...the procedure will stop!!!
2a. When loading is complete, a new window appears, click the triangle to display contents of each package...Select item and proceed to step 7.
2b. or click the “Find” icon in the Pacifist window and type the name of the software you need.
    3. In the list that comes back, click the top most entry for the item that you want. ..... that is the one for the English language.
    4. On the top of the Pacifist window, click “verify” .... you will probably be prompted for your password.
    >5. Enter checks for.... “verify permissions” and “verify file contents.” and click “verify” ....enter password when prompted.... you will get back output which may look like this:
20 files were scanned. 20 of 20 files were present on the hard disk. 0 of 20 files had file permissions that did not match those specified in the package. 0 of 20 files had checksums that did not match those specified in the package.
    6. Click “close”. Go to step 7.
    Extract or Install........
    7. In the Toolbar (upper left), you now have the option to extract or install. Click a file in the lower list and those two icons will be enabled.
    8. If “Extract to...” is selected.... navigate to the location where the file will be placed, select “choose”, select “extract” in new dialog that appears, authenicate , if prompted, click “OK”.
    9. In the next dialog, click “Extract”.
    10. If “Install” is selected... dialog will appear with the location/path of the installed software. Click “Install”
    11. Type in your password, click “OK”
Pacifist will begin to extract files.
    12. In steps 8/10ß.... you also have the choice to “cancel”
    Notes.....
Pacifist may find that a file it is installing already exists on the hard disk. Pacifist will present you with an alert panel....
Stop Leave original alone Update ..... Default selection Replace .... Replace option should only be used on full install packages

  • When iMac sleeps... it shuts down external hard drives

When I wake my iMac I get the error message that my hard drives were removed, could cause damage, etc. This just started today. It's almost like the iMac kind of goes into a deeeeeeeep sleep... but the computer doesnt shut down totally. I can still wake it, takes a little longer than usual though.
Anyone know what the issue can be?
    Thanks

Do you have an external drive attached?
The reason for asking is I have seen similar errors when I fail
to properly unmount or removes an external drive.
There may be a better way but when I want to turn off my
external drive (used for TM and SD), I right click on he
external HD's icon and select the EJECT option. This unmount
the drive so the power can be turned OFF and removed
from the back of the iMac. You can also do with the Disk
    Utility.
Try unmounting your external drives and restart to see
    if this helps.

  • Trouble Shutting Down Compu

Ever since I have had my new sound card and the software that come with it (which I think is the problem) I have had a hard time shutting down my computer. When I hit "shut down" or "restart" I get some of those "program is not responding" windows where I can hit "end now" or just let it end itself. If I end it or let it end itself, it'sdoes the same thing by just going back to my regular desktop and freezing up. I can move my mouse but I cannot click on anything and I end up turning off my comp from the back. The weird thing is, the windows that are forcing themselves to quit don't have anything to do with CL or my card. I would think it was something else but I have run multiple AV scans and have come up with nothing.Does anyone else have this problem or know of it's

When your PC is in such a state, right click on your taskbar and click on "Task Manager". Go to the "Processes" tab and scroll down the list to find the application that uses much CPU power. Usually these problematic applications consume a rate of 80%+ of CPU power and thats the application to kill.

  • Trouble shutting down 10.8.3

Ever since updating to  OS X Moutain Lion 10.8.3 I have encountered issues with my MacBook Pro not fully shutting down. It just simply won't shut down immediately, but will take a long time to do so or it either:
runs out of battery and therefore dies
or shutsdown/powers off if I hold the power button down.
Does anyone have any solutions to solve this??

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.
