Having trouble uninstalling and installing iTunes

When I try to unintall iTunes (because it wouldn't open and work) by emptying the trash it wont completely uninstall iTunes because it still says the iTunes.rsrc and the Localized.rsrc files are in use, I cannot find the iTunes.rsrc file any where and I can find the Localized.rsrc but I don't know which one it is. Also when I try to install iTunes or the most recent iPod updater it says there are errors. I have no iTunes or iPod .pkgs so I don't know what to do, any and all help will be appreciated.

As an alternative, you could download the stand-alone iTunes installer (at http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ ) and try installing from that one.
If the problem is related to Software Update, it might work.
If the problem is related to the Installer (due to permissions problems), I don't expect it to work either.
I don't have much knowledge of and experience with permissions of hidden files.
Usually, I stay away from them, not wanting to mess up my system. After all, they are not hidden without reason.
If you want to change permissions, you will first have to make the hidden files visible. This can be done by typing this command in a Terminal window:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool YES;killall Finder
To hide the hidden files again, use this command:
defaults delete com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles;killall Finder
If you're not familiar with Terminal, use a utility like Tinkertool, OnyX or CliX to perform the same action within a more familiar user interface.
Here are the settings of my 'private', 'tmp' and '501' folders.
If all doesn't work, you could post a question in one of the Mac OS X forums.
A lot of knowledgeable people are answering questions there.

Managed to get the installation sorted. Go to Control Panel, and where you have a list of all installed programs, repair all the Apple/Itunes related programs. Installation worked fine after that. Hopefully it helps you out too!

trying to install itunes on win 8.1.  keep getting error apple application support not found.  asks me to uninstall and install itunes.  i tried several times and keep getting same error.

With the Error 2, let's try a standalone Apple Application Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of the issue.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR suitable for your PC (there's a 32-bit Windows version and a 64-bit Windows version):
    http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleApplicationSupport.msi to do a standalone AAS install.
Does it install properly for you? If so, see if iTunes will launch without the error now.
If instead you get an error message during the install, let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

  • Wiped our old iPad 1 clean, now can't install iOS from iTunes.  iTunes does not "see" the devise.  Tried uninstalling and installing iTunes on laptop.  Also bought new USB cable.  The iPad is charging, but that's all it does.

Wiped our old iPad 1 clean, now can't install iOS from iTunes using laptop PC (W Vista).  iTunes does not "see" the device.  Tried uninstalling and installing iTunes on laptop.  Also bought new USB cable.  The iPad is charging, but that's all it does.  Just want to get it operating again for browsing and e-reading.

OK.  You merely erased the content and settings.  The IOS is still there.
If it has NEVER been jailbroke, here are some standard repair procedures.  From what you've already stated, my guess is that you'll end up with Recovery Mode described in the last paragraph.
First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore (or it doesn't help), go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, read this.

Rather than using the Apple document as a guide, I currently recommend using the following user tip instead:

Under normal circumstances, an uninstall/reinstall doesn't touch your content. (That being said, it's still always a good idea to maintain a current backup at all times in case of disasters of any sort.)

I have edited the registery, downloaded the Gear drivers, uninstalled and installed itunes, and the error still appears.
What else can I do.  Cannot connect any of our iphones or ipods to itunes because of this error.

    I have edited the registery,
We'd better have a closer look at the keys to see what's going on.
Can you post a screenshot of the contents of the key you've been editing, please? Include all of the regedit screen, including the left-hand column. Save the screenshot to an image file, and insert the image file in a reply by clicking the wee camera icon at the top of the reply window.

    Hello, Fercho1965.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your device is not recognized by iTunes and iTunes is updated, I would recommend the steps in the article below.  Start with the section labeled Verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed > For Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 > Update the Apple Mobile Device Driver.

  • TS3212 Has anyone had trouble downloading and installing itunes 10.7?

Having trouble configuring my iPhone 5.  Keep getting message that I need itunes 10.7.  Have downloaded it, but when I check for current updates, it keeps telling me that I have the current version...10.6.3.  What am I doing wrong?

Yes, I'm on a mac. No telling where I ended up posting this. I don't usually use this type of support. Looks like it downloaded, and now when I try to install it (which I'm not even sure I should do, since I already have itunes on my mac), it says I need OS 10.6.8. I'm so confused.
Aaaaaah. You're on a Leopard system? Unfortunately, you'd need Snow leopard or higher to run 10.7.0.21 and your iPhone 5.
When you check in with the Apple Store folks, let them know what particular model of mac you have, so they can work out if it can run one of the newer operating systems (Snow Leopard or above).

  • Uninstalling and Installing iTunes - Error 2330

I wanted to upgrade to iTunes 9.2 and started this via the upgrade option in iTunes. At the end of the install i got Error 2330 and the install rolled back. Tried to uninstall iTunes and got the same error message at the end of the uninstall. Tried to download 9.2 from Apple website and install that - same error message. Followed various suggested fixes, including deleting iTunes folder from Program Files and tried again but i still get the same error message.
Can anyone help me sort out this mess?
    Many thanks

Sorry about the delay, grumps. I've been brooding.
Okay ... we'll proceed on the assumption that you've got a damaged AAS file or directory, and that you've got either an AAS 1.0.1 or 1.1.0 in place, and the disk/file damage is enough to trigger the early-version-of-AAS bug where if a program file was missing from AAS, the AAS installer returns the missing .msi message.
Although I never had to employ it out here in the forums, I had a plan mapped out for how I was going to deal with it if it ever cropped up for someone.
Unfortunately, that plan has gotten more difficult to implement, because it involves the Windows Installer CleanUp utility, and Microsoft pulled the utility from their Downloads Center on June 25. So first we have to hunt down a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for *at least version 3.0* of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any *Apple Application Support* entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp. Now we'll have to try to get the damaged AAS program files out of the way, so we don't get caught by the 2330 again.
In My Computer, open Local Disk C: (or whichever drive your program files are installed on).
    Open the Program files folder.
    Open the Common files folder.
    Open the Apple folder.
Right-click on the *Apple Application Support* folder, and select "Delete". If Windows won't let you delete the folder, try instead renaming the folder *Apple Application SupportOLD*
After deleting/renaming the folder, empty your Recycle bin and restart the PC.
After the PC restart, try another iTunes install. Does it go through without the 2330 this time?
(If you do find a clean download site for the correct version of CleanUp, please don't tell me where it is. Without wishing to sound paranoid (although I grant it does sound paranoid), there is a non-zero chance that posting links to download locations for the utility here at Discussions leads to that download location being shut down.)
