Hi Paul, yes there are, and different authentications, as well as security...
The receiving email ports are:
IMAP is port 143
IMAP-SSL is port 993
POP is port 110
POP-SSL is port 995
SMTP and SMTP-SSL is on ports 25, 587 and 465. Port 587 has to be SSL, and port 465 is enforced TLS-wrapped and is generally used by Outlook users.

    If those music are greyed out in iTunes on your laptop, are you able to play the music? If you cannot, it means that you probably deleted the mp3 file or moved it to another location where iTunes can no longer find. If they are greyed out on iTunes and cannot play them, I would just right click and delete it. Then re-sync with your iPad.

    Having trouble with mail.app always reply all is cc'ing myself. Solution was to add another address under the account so that it recoginzes aliases as well as the primary account that you are sending from. Then it will recognize all the addresses and aliases associated with the account.

    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
    Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
    Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
    When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
    Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
    Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports (not "Diagnostic and Usage Messages") for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents—again, the text, not a screenshot. I know the report is long. Please post all of it anyway.
    In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
    Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

    I'm having trouble with one of my computers and my imap gmail account. Imap on my desktop works perfectly but on my laptop it does not go online (when I click on the caution symbol that asks me if I want to go online, it ignores the request). My old Pop account works fine on this computer but for syncing purposes I really need to get Imap working. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

    I have had trouble with icloud since they've had it. Filled with bugs. I can login onto icloud via my imac but cannot via my iphone or ipad. It says "invalid password" ...   • I just upgraded from 10.6.8 to 10.7.5 and having trouble with Mail search.

    I used to be able to search through my Notes that were set up in my mail.app and now I can't. Is that feature now unavailable?

    Restart the computer, when you hear the start up tone choose the Recovery Partition and open Disk Utility and run Repair Disk Permissions at least 2x on the internal HD. While you are there run Repair Disk at least 2x too. Then restart the computer in Safe Mode to clear some caches. Once you have done the Safe Mode restart then restart normally and test. If you have still lost all your data you can restore from your Time Machine or Bootable Clone backup.

    If it can't find a match, it won't offer any category tokens.

    I noticed this at one point and what I did, which worked, was to delete the mailbox from my iPad, then reinstall it.  Give it a try and see if it helps you as well.

    I have an iPad 3, iPad Mini and iPhone 5S and they are all sluggish on capitalisation using shift keys. I hope that Apple will solve the problem because it is driving me crazy.
    I find using a Microsoft Surface and Windows 8 phone, which I also have, work as well as all the ios devices before the ios 7 upgrade.
    It has something to do with the length of time that you need to hold the shift key down. The shift key needs to be held longer than the letter key for the capitalisation to work. For some reason, this is a major change in the way we have learnt to touch type on computers. I am having to relearn how to type!

    This is too weird. When I receive an e-mail that has animation in it it comes through freeze framed in Mail. It does not matter if it is in my .Mac account or Verizon account. Just for the heck of it I forwarded it to myself using the Verizon account and opened it in Safari. I also did the same thing with my .mac account. I opened it on the web. Bingo, I had animation.     OK, from the sound of your post, you have a limited knowledge about email. Let me see if I can help. I would guess that you have a Windows machine that you have used in the past. Your email address must be a "pop" address. That means that your internet service provider has a server where your mail is sent. This is different than a web mail address, that is accessed remotely with a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari. You must then be using an email program, such as Outlook Express, to go get the email onto your local machine. Any email program can do this. Open up the accounts tab in Outlook Express, and write down the settings. There will be one for the incoming server, and one for the outgoing server. Now, on your Mac, you can use the email program provided, such as Mac Mail, and put the settings in there. You can now send and receive to your Mac using your supplied email address. You can use another program such as Thunderbird to do this if you want. You don't have to use Mac Mail.
    Getting your old email off of the Windows computer is a bit harder, so hopefully you don't need to do that. But if you do, I can direct you on how to do that also.
