Having troubles erasing my external HD?

IN response to some other problems I am having, it has been suggested that I erase the external 320 GB HD that I have connected to my iMac, which I use for TM backups...and start from scratch. I used the Disk Utility and did ERASE and zero'd out all data. However, it still shows on my drive that 132 MB are used? I am confused. Is there any other way to completely erase the drive so that it is like I am starting out with a new drive???
Any help would be appreciated. I know this may seem stupid, but I struggled with this all day yesterday. It took 3 hours to perform my erase function and I STILL have that on there.

Great! thank you for the quick response! I just checked and my partition scheme is GUID, so I guess that is good? I never partitioned it and didn't want it partitioned? It's not, is it?
OH, you are probably laughing at these questions...I promise I"m not really this stupid!

    I am having trouble erasing the hard drive in my Macbook Air.  When I enter Utilities and attempt to erase the buttons are frozen both security and erase

    You need to restart with the Option key held down, boot from the computer's original thumbdrive(if any) or the recovery partition(10.7+), and erase the drive from there.

  • Having troubles reading usb external drives.

    I have a macbook pro, mid 2010 is when I got it.  The issue I've ran into for about 6 months now is my usb external drives are not currently being recognized.  It's only external drives and thumb drives though.  My mac recognizes my iphone, charges my camera usb, lets me use a usb midi controller.  About six months ago I was having trouble connecting a usb dmx lighting interface.  I called the company and they sent me to a workaround and it worked.  http://groups.google.com/group/dmxis_users/browse_thread/thread/c5746c10c618bf19 ?hl=en_US
    Ever since then, it's never been the same my external drives don't work.  I even took it to an apple store and replaced the internal boards.  (Sorry for not knowing specifics)  Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

    That would explain your problem!  If you have a backup then see if it's on your backup.  Otherwise, you will need to restore it from your installer DVD using Pacifist:
    How Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
    A few of the basic OS X installed applications can be restored from the Optional Installs installer located in the Optional installs folder on your Installer DVD.  However, if what you need is not there then follow the instructions below.
    How to Use Pacifist to Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
    Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive.  Use a simple utility like TinkerTool to toggle invisibility so you can see invisible items.  Alternatively, open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter the following:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes Press RETURN.
    To turn off the display of invisible files repeat the above command substituting No for Yes.
    The install packages are located in the /System/Installation/ folder on the DVD.
    Download the shareware utility Pacifist from VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the missing item(s) from the file archives on your OS X installation DVD. The file archives are in the /System/Installations/ folder (use Go to Folder option in the Go menu of the Finder.)
    Here are Four Basic ways to use Pacifist (courtesy of George Orville.)
    A. Drag a .pkg icon onto the Pacifist window .....proceed to step 7.
    B. Click on “Open Package ....” and navigate to package desired and click “Open” in the open/save window.....proceed to step 7.
    C. Insert Mac OS X installer CD and when it mounts, navigate to .... Menu->Go->Go to Folder. In the path field enter or paste ....
    /Volumes/disc name/System/Installation/Packages (where disc name is the name of the CD/DVD that you inserted.
    • Click on the  "Go" button ..... • Drag a .pkg to Pacifist..... proceed to step 7.
    The package you'll need will have to be discovered by trial and error, but for most applications you should start with the Essentials.pkg and/or Additional Essentials.pkg.
    D. Insert your Mac OS X install disk 1 .... and open Pacifist.
    1. In Pacifist, select "Open Mac OS X Install Packages" ... dialog may appear asking for disk 2, then disk 3 and finally disk 1 again.... {if DVD is not used)...If “Stop Loading” is selected...the procedure will stop!!!
    2a. When loading is complete, a new window appears, click the triangle to display contents of each package...Select item and proceed to step 7.
    2b. or click the “Find” icon in the Pacifist window and type the name of the software you need.
    3. In the list that comes back, click the top most entry for the item that you want. ..... that is the one for the English language.
    4. On the top of the Pacifist window, click “verify” .... you will probably be prompted for your password.
    >5. Enter checks for.... “verify permissions” and “verify file contents.” and click “verify” ....enter password when prompted.... you will get back output which may look like this:
    20 files were scanned. 20 of 20 files were present on the hard disk. 0 of 20 files had file permissions that did not match those specified in the package. 0 of 20 files had checksums that did not match those specified in the package.
    6. Click “close”. Go to step 7.
    Extract or Install........
    7. In the Toolbar (upper left), you now have the option to extract or install. Click a file in the lower list and those two icons will be enabled.
    8. If “Extract to...” is selected.... navigate to the location where the file will be placed, select “choose”, select “extract” in new dialog that appears,authenicate , if prompted, click “OK”.
    9. In the next dialog, click “Extract”.
    10. If “Install” is selected... dialog will appear with the location/path of the installed software. Click “Install”
    11. Type in your password, click “OK”
    Pacifist will begin to extract files.
    12. In steps 8/10ß.... you also have the choice to “cancel”
    Notes.....
    Pacifist may find that a file it is installing already exists on the hard disk. Pacifist will present you with an alert panel....
    Stop Leave original alone Update ..... Default selection Replace .... Replace option should only be used on full install packages

  • I'm having trouble creating an external startup disk

    I have just obtained a new 500 Gigabyte hard drive to replace my iMac's G5 160 Gigabyte internal drive. Alas, when I started to take apart the computer, I realized that mine (late 2005 iSight model) is the only one of the G5 iMacs that is so complicated to dismantle that I could not do it myself. Cleverly (of course) I sent off for an external enclosure for the drive so I could at least have its backup (and startup) capacity. God forbid I should pay someone an unreasonable amount of money to install it for me.
    Following suggestions here (in these forums) and elsewhere, I elected to use Data Backup, which came with another external drive I previously purchased, in order to clone my onboard hard drive. I followed the instructions, and (many hours later -- during which I largely was asleep) the cloning process completed.
    I checked the contents of the drive, and all seemed in order. So I restarted and held down the option key, the better to select the new drive as startup disk.
    And guess what? It wasn't there. I tried several more times. Only the iMac's drive (and, when turned on, any other external drives with startup capability I had attached) showed up.
    Did I choose the wrong copy option?
    I chose: "Entire Internal Drive to /Volumes/iMac Startup Clone"
    Is that NOT the option I needed in order to clone the hard drive? Should I have used Carbon Copy Cloner (my previous method) instead?
    The drive will not go to waste, of course, even though I can't install it (myself) into the computer. But startup capability would be nice.
    Before I erase and start from scratch, I am hoping someone here might have a clue.
    Many thanks, if so.

    Hi, BDAqua,
    Nice to hear from you. You helped me with another recent question. Thank you.
    The external case is Other World Computing's Mercury Elite Pro with Oxford chip set. Drive is an Hitachi deskstar 500 Gigabyte disk (I'll dig around for exact specs, if needed).
    Weird thing is that the drive (partitioned into two disks, one boot, one for files) shows up in the Finder and in Disk Utility, but not in System Profiler. It's not visible at all there (not under Firewire, by which method it is connected, nor anywhere else). I can access its files, though, via Finder.
    Very strange.

  • We have 3 MacBook Pros in our house, connected by a WiFi network. I am having troubles connecting an external hard drive thru our router, to make back ups of all three computers wirelessly.

    I have purchased a 3rd party external hard drive to back up all three computers. I have done the intial back up by connecting each computer separately to the drive via USB. I was told at the Apple store where I purchased the drive, that I could then connect the hard drive to our router via the USB and then use Time Machine to back up the computers wirelessly. But I can't seem to figure out how to do that. I have connected the device to the router, but don't see it on Finder and when I check with Time Machine, it doesn't recognize any device. Help please!

    First off your external drive must be formatted Mac Extened (Journaled) for it to work with Time Machine. As that is not a widely used format, the Apple Mac format, most routers do not support it so the router will not see it is even connected to the router. For the router to see the drive is must be formatted either FAT32 or on some routers they can see/read/write to the NTFS format. But if you kformat it like that then Time Machine will not backup to it.
    About the only device that can be used for network backups of Mac computers is an Apple Time Capsule.
    So you have 2 options.
    1) Do all the backups by connecting that drive directly to each Mac.
    2) Take it back and get a Refund then buy an Apple Time Capsule. And or some other Network Attached Storage device (a NAS) that cane be formatted Mac Extended (Journaled) and be seen on your LAN and that the Mac's can backup up to.

  • HAVING TROUBLE SHUTTING DOWN EXTERNAL HD

    For some reason when I a make a song in midi, and I save it, I shut down Logic and then try to shut down my external HD. But when I try and shut down the external drive it says that Logic is still running, and I cant shut it down. Now Logic is clearly shut down but still when I try and shut down the external drive it says Logic is not shut down. Please help!!!!!!!!!!!

    hi
    i've got similar set up so i do suggest the next things:
    1)before you shut down your external hard disc always eject it
    2)if u got both ff400 and lacie hd connected via firewire try to connect one (i suggest the hd) via express card 34 (i bought one that is not so expensive and it works perfect)

  • Having trouble erasing HD completely

    I recently did a full reinstall of Leopard and when I went to erase the Hard Drive it stated that there were still three files on the HD. When I did the reinstall all of my searches and other miscellaneous data was still on the HD. Any ideas on this?

    Daimajin1 wrote:
    I have done that, it still leaves 3 files. which keeps me from a complete erase.
    In DU, create another small partition so that you have two.
    Then delete the large partiton and erase what is left.
    If that still does not work, in DU open a terminal and cd to the "empty" HD and enter the following:
    ls -al
    and you will see all the files on the drive.
    If there are some, run
    sudo rm *
    you will be prompted for a password.
    If the files are actually folders you may need to enter
    rm -r *
    to recursively empty the contents of the folders.
    Did you ever install TechTool eDrive? That's a separate issue.

  • I'm having trouble with an External HD attached to my Airport Extreme

    I connected an external HD to my AirPort extreme using USB.  I assigned the disk to my Time Machine backup, but when I try to back up I get a message that the disk is unavailable.  The HD is mounted on my desktop and is formatted as MAC OS Extended (Journaled).

    New formatted hard drive plugged into Extreme - yes, formatted Mac Journal. The new drive is seen on network, but it cannot be applied as a Time Machine function on my iMac.
    I edit the Extreme on Airport utilities - add disks. The hard drive is shown. I enable file sharing, secure shared disks with device password - and update. Nothing happens from that point onwards.
    Reading a number of other questions from people with similar problems on other sites, it seems that although this feature is advertised and promoted by Apple in the instruction booklet (page 13), Apple have backed away from this facility post production. Maybe it is not reliable enough in its present form?
    I am very disappointed about this as I had intended to use the Extreme to back up several devices in my home and office.
    Any other ideas would be welcome.
    Thanks

  • I have a powerbook g4 and i am having trouble erasing the disk.

    I want to dispose of this computer. I go to Utility, Erase, and select the disk, but volume format and name both stay grayed out so I can't continue. Any suggestions?I

    Are you possibly using Disk Utility installed on the internal hard disk? If you wish to completely erase a startup disk, you would have to start the computer from another disc/disk. See, for example, the link below:
    http://macs.about.com/od/applications/ss/diskutilformat_5.htm
    If you do not have access to a suitable system disc, you may want to try an Internet search for an old PowerPC version (dban-2.0.0_powerpc.iso) of a data erasure utility called DBAN instead. Once a bootable CD-R has been created from a downloaded iso file, you could test whether that disc would let you boot the PowerBook G4 (while holding down the C key). Then follow  instructions on screen.

  • I am having trouble with the external sound on my iPhone 4s

    The external Speaker works for incoming calls, Siri. It no longer works for music, when dialing numbers, text messages.

    Hello there, Missy.
    First thing I would recommend is to check your downloads queue to make sure there is not an interrupted download per the following Knowledge Base article:
    iTunes: How to resume interrupted iTunes Store downloads
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1725
    If your download was interrupted using your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
    1. From the Home screen, tap the iTunes app.
    2. For iPhone or iPod touch, tap More > Downloads. For iPad, tap Downloads.
    3. Enter your account name and password if prompted.
    4. Tap the blue download arrow to resume.
    If you can't complete the download on your iOS device, you can download it in iTunes on your Mac or PC and then sync it to your iOS device. You can also transfer purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer.
    For Apps, you can also try tapping on the application icon to resume the download, as outline in this featured discussion:
    App updates won't download on my...: Apple Support Communities
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4111336
    Try tapping the App, so that it changes to Paused instead of Waiting, then tap it again to resume the install.
    Make sure you don't have any paused downloads in other apps either, like the App Store or iTunes Store.
    If that doesn't do it, try resetting or restoring the iPhone.

    Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

  • Having trouble loading an external swf (loadmovie?)

    Hello!
    This is my first time ever constructing a web site ONLY using Flash 8. I normally just use elements here and there, and I am totally confused.
    The link to the project is here: www.cathisingh.com/new
    I want the site to be set up so that when I click a button (at the bottom), an external .swf file loads into that gray box in the center. How do I start? Where do I start? I should be able to figure this out, but I am stuck.
    Thanks for the help!

    Hey!
    You can use a script like this to load a swf.
    BUTTON.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP, LoadExternalSwf)
    function LoadExternalSwf (e:Event) {
         var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest("/media/EXTERNALSWF.swf");
         var loader:Loader = new Loader();
         loader.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(flash.events.Event.COMPLETE, Finish);
         loader.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(ProgressEvent.PROGRESS, status);
         loader.load(request);
         function Finish(e:Event) {
              externalMovie = MovieClip(loader.content);
              NameOfYourGreyBox.addChild(externalMovie);
    function status(e:ProgressEvent) {
         var percentage:Number = Math.round(e.bytesLoaded/e.bytesTotal*100);
         progressBar.gotoAndStop(percentage);
    This creates an event listener on your button (BUTTON) so that when someone clicks it, the function LoadExternalSwf is run. That function creates a URLRequest for the file at your URL, loads it, and then adds it to your grey box (which i assume is a movieclip). I included a progress bar function, which creates a variable called percentage that varies from 1 to a 100 and manipulates a progress bar movieclip that has a 100 frames (a bar going from empty to full).
    Let me know if you need anything else.
    I really like your site. It looks great.
    John

    Hi cheperrumps,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
    Uninstalling or reinstalling the iTunes application won't affect your music (data) -- but it's always a good idea to have a backup!
    The information below will show you how to do that and to troubleshoot your issue with iTunes:

  • I am having trouble keeping the quality of my video when exporting to my external drive.  I change the kind to "original" but when I view the video from the external drive once exported, the sound and picture are distorted.

    I am having trouble keeping the quality of my video when exporting to my external hard drive.  I have tried to export from iphoto with changing kind to "original" but when I open the video from the external drive the quality is effected.  I have also tried copying the video to my desktop and then dragging and dropping onto the drive...same problem. Any suggestions?  I would like to save everything to my external drive so that I can delete all of iphoto library and then reimport to correct a few things.

    The file sizes are identical.  In the finder I did a search for all .mov files.  Then when they came up, I went through them and named each one so that they would be easier to find.  I am a new mac user and am used to windows.  I realized later that I should not have done this....with a mac files should be named within iphoto app...not finder....When I went to open the videos in iphoto, it wouldn't allow me.  I had to go into finder, copy to desktop and reimport into iphoto.  Then the videos worked again.  However, I had the problem with the poor video quality when copied to external drive before that.  Actually the first problem I had was when I copied to ext drive...videos were copying as an image...so I learned that you have to change "kind" to original before exporting....then that problem was solved...now they are videos, not images but not of a great quality.  Skips, sound and images are not in sync...etc...

    Im new to Mac and I was doing fine with my new laptop but somewhere along the way I have reach to a point where I cant continue my work. I am having trouble on transferring photos from iPhotos to my Seagate External Hard Drive, even when the hard drive is compatable with my MacBook Air. Some how I have trouble trying to drag my photos to my drive and it is not letting me to do so. Pls. help me in my sistuation or derect me to a website that will answer my questions. I am getting really upset and frustrated; so I'm out of ideas.

    even when the hard drive is compatable with my MacBook Air.
    What is the file system on that drive? Is it formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled)?
    And what is your iPhoto version? iPhoto 9.5.1?
    Some how I have trouble trying to drag my photos to my drive and it is not letting me to do so
    What exactly happens when you try to drag photos to your drive? Are you dragging from iPhoto's window to the drive?
    Can you export your photos, when you select the photos on iPhoto and use the command "File > Export"?

    You don't want to install the software that came with the drive, you don't need it and it will be problematic. Connect the new drive, open Disk Utility, select the new drive and partition it using the GUID partition scheme, then format it as Mac OS extended journaled and it will be easy to use with your Mac.
