I am new to Solairs9. I use the format utility to list my partitions, but there are many unassigned partitions. I pasted the format response below:

The part number from 3 to 6 are unassigned. What does this mean? How much space of these unassigned partitions? How can I mount these unassigned partitions to my local directories?
Thanks.

• JNI FC1063 HBA support on solaris 10

Hi ,
I have upgraded Solaris 9 to Solaris 10 using Live upgrade.Server is SUN fire V880 and the HBA is JNI FC1063.
After upgrading ,I am not able to see the FC LUNS .
Does The JNI Fc1063 HBA has support on Solaris 10.
Thanks

I would beg to differ on this response. This is not a service call and the storage vendor is not responsible for making decisions on what the customer is allowed or not allowed to use.
EG, I have a Sun StorEdge 9990 (actually a HDS USP 1100 and not the 9990 Lightning series which is on the web site) and I made the call to put the Fibre Channel HBA's of my choice into my systems and I also chose the Cisco 9509 switches. Both HDS and Cisco put out documentation regarding compatibility of the HBA's.
So, I would suggest RPS check out the Brocade website or sales people and ask them if they recommend anything.
http://www.brocade.com/products/pdf/Fabric_Aware_Compatibility_Matrix-060521.pdf
states that the option X6768A is supported for Solaris 10.
Sun 9980 will work on most of the HBA's available in the system handbook.
The could be either the rebadged Qlobic or JNI HBA's. You could even use Emulux if you are that way inclined.
My systems are full of dual channel HBA's such as SG-XPCI2FC-QF2.
You should also be aware that the 1280 has only one 66 MHz PCI slot. You can upgrade the I/O boat to all 66 MHz slots if you are after good throughput. The upgrade will also give the opportunity to use the 4 Gb HBA if you can find a system to use them on.

• Need information regarding Solaris kernel Delayed write operation

Hello Friends,
I need information regarding the delayed write operation in Solaris.
Would be thankful if anyone can give me some details.
Thanks in advance

1) When you post code, please use
and
tags as described in Formatting tips on the message entry page. It makes it much easier to read.
2) Don't just post a huge pile of code and ask, "How do I make this work?" Ask a specific question, and post just enough code to demonstrate the problem you're having.
3) Don't just write a huge pile of code and then test it. Write a tiny piece, test it. Then write the piece that will work with or use the first piece. Test that by itself--without the first piece. Then put the two together and test that. Only move on to the next step after the current step produces the correct results. Continue this process until you have a complete, working program.

• Indepth information about Solaris Installation

Hi,
where can I find in-depth information about the installation
process for Solaris (6, 7 and 8) on Sparc machines?
for example I need to know:
There seems to be a limit for the length of the parameter of the (OBP) boot command. How long can the parameter be?
What actions does pfinstall while installing the system? What files are changed by pfinstall in /etc and /a/etc?
Also I need some more information about the sysidtool programs.
I alreay looked in the man pages, manuals and searched the sun websites (www.sun.com, docs.sun.com, etc.)
TIA
Bernd Schemmer

The differences would be new features, documented in the Release Notes and README files.
We don't document lists of, for example, bug fixes.
The compilers are forward compatible in the sense that valid source code that worked with C++ 5.5 will continue to work with C++ 5.8, and binary files that were created by C++ 5.5 on Solaris 8 can be linked into a program that is built with C++ 5.8 on Solaris 9. (I say "valid source code" because we don't promise to duplicate old bugs.)
Since you are moving to Solaris 9, I recommend using Sun Studio 12 (C++ 5.9) instead of Sun Studio 11 (C++ 5.8). Using Studio 11 is necessary only if you need to build on and generate code for Solaris 8.

• How to get information(using APIs) about physical disks on solaris 8,9???

i want to extract physical disk vendor name ,model and all other information.
which solaris APIs can be used to get this information.

Hi,
You can use:
# iostat -En
This will give you Vendor / Product / Revision / Serial Number of disks installed in the system relating to their logical name (c0t0d0 etc etc)

• Solaris 9 , SAN attached MSL library : robotic arm access

Could someone provide information regarding Solaris 9 configuration issue.
On a V880 using LP10K emulex HBAs in a Brocade switches SAN environment, I am facing issue configuring HP MSL6060 2 LTO3 drive library.
I am able to tar to 2 LTO drives but I do not know the steps to configure access to the library Robotic controller arm itself.
emulex hbanyware shows 4 objects for the library i.e the library controller, 2 drives and library NSR.
At this point, at OS level, devfsadm creates only tapes special files.
I am more familiar with HP-UX than Solaris : What would be solaris commands to confirm HW is seen and usable at OS level (ioscan -fnC disks + insf to create special files on HP-UX)
On Solaris 9 : I have used modinfo , modunload, modload and devfsadm commands after st.conf modifications to gain access to drives without rebooting
BUT after sd.conf modifications, update_drv -f , devfsadm -v does not create any special file to point to robotic arm.
Overall objective is to configure Data Protector indirect backup for Solaris9 server and abitlity for that host to manage robotic arm.
Any help appreciated.

I'm not sure if this will help, since this is from a very small environment, but here goes:
I recently attached an old Compaq Manatee class mini-library to a Blade 100 via a dual-channel LSI SCSI adapter and was trying to manipulate the robot arm via the open-source mtx utility.
Using the SCSI generic (sgen) driver, I was able to get this to work. Before I did the OS level change, at the prom, I did a probe-scsi-all and the system showed the two DLT7000 drives and the HP type 8 media changer. But without updating the sgen driver configuration, I could only see the DLT drives at the Solaris 9 level.
The configuration file for the sgen driver resides at: /kernel/drv/sgen.conf The file itself actually is quite clearly commented by default, which saved me a lot of research. In addition, man sgen is an excellent resource.
I added the following two lines to my sgen.conf file:
device-type-config-list="changer";
inquiry-config-list=    "*",            "*";And in addition, since my changer is at SCSI id 6, I uncommented the following line:
name="sgen" class="scsi" target=6 lun=0;After that I did an init 6, and lo and behold in my /var/adm/messages file:
May 15 13:54:22 baetica17.arxmicarus.lan scsi: [ID 193665 kern.info] sgen0 at glm0: target 6 lun 0
May 15 13:54:22 baetica17.arxmicarus.lan genunix: [ID 936769 kern.info] sgen0 is /pci@1f,0/pci@5/scsi@1/sgen@6,0Success! In addition, I found the following new directories and files in /dev:
/dev/scsi/changer/c1t6d0which is a symlink to the following physical device file:
c1t6d0 -> ../../../devices/pci@1f,0/pci@5/scsi@1/sgen@6,0:changerTo make specifying this physical device file easier in mtx, I also added this symlink to /dev:
/dev/changer -> ../devices/pci@1f,0/pci@5/scsi@1/sgen@6,0:changerMy example here is from my simple hardwire SCSI environment. I'm not experienced in the specific SAN environment you're operating in, but my guess is that you would probably need to make sure that you have some sort of persistent reservation for the changer made so that the physical device of the changer doesn't change between reboots.
Hope this at least gets you going in a productive direction! Please let me (and anyone else who might read this) know how you solved the issue at your site.

• Solaris 10 x86 and 3Ware Escalade controller

Hi there,
I would like to install Solaris 10 x86 on a server which uses an ATA-RAID-controller from 3ware (Escalade 7006-2). I haven't found any information on Solaris support for this controller so my question is if anyone of you has some experience with this controller and Solaris 10.
Thanks in advance

Hello Jakob,
this is the wrong forum because it's about Sun Hardware and only user-to-user.
I would suggest that
you use your service-plan and contact Sun
or
join the Solarisx86 group on Yahoo, browse the previous posts and then re-post on this maillist.
Please check the Links page before posting:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/solarisx86/links
Post message: [email protected]
UNSUBSCRIBE: [email protected]
Btw. even the RAID functionality of the integrated RAID controller of Sun x64 systems isn't supported under Solaris 10 (only RHEL) ...

• Install Solaris on External Firewire Disk

Hello All,
I have a laptop running windows 2000 and I have a External Firewire Hard Disk of 60 GB. Now my question is, " Is it possible to install Solaris 8 on this external Firewire Hard Disk". When I tried installing, It did not find the external Firewire Disk, the only partition information, which solaris was displaying was from my internal Hard Disk.
Please give me clues/information, how should , I do it.
Thanks
Sanjay

First off, is any of your Macs an Intel Mac, that will complicate matters since they use a different hard drive formatting and need a different installation of Mac OS X.
Secondly, you can't directly install Mac OS X from an Intel Mac to an external hard drive, you have to do a clone with a software like Shirt-Pocket's Superduper for that.
If it isn't an Intel Mac, perhaps your Firewire hard drive isn't Mac OS X bootable? Not all are.
Here's a hint on making the Intel/PowerPC partition table:
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=2006061610374449
Also note, different Macs which came out after Tiger will only boot off the install disk which came with them, and not the retail disk. So you are best off cloning that Mac to its own partition.

• Solaris 8 Backup

Hi , I'm quite new to Solaris 8. Recently I just found out that the NOC never do backup for our servers. Frankly speaking I do not know how to setup a backup configuration and schedule for the backups. Which program does Solaris use to do backups and how do I go about installing the tape driver and program, I'm desperate sirs. If anyone know, please enlighten.

Configuring the Device Drivers - Solaris 2.x
Under Solaris 2.x, it is necessary to configure the devices directory using the following steps:
Shutdown the computer.
Connect and power-up the DAT-Link with the chosen SCSI ID set on its switch.
Boot the workstation using the boot -r command. This will reconfigure the machine for all connected devices.
After the computer has booted the system will have created a new device file for the DAT-Link. If there are no tape devices or other DAT-Links connected to the machine this will be named /dev/rmt/0. If other tape devices also exist, the tape unit number in the above path may be a higher number. These files are actually symbolic links to filenames which identify the SCSI ID of the device. For
example, if the DAT-Link is connected with SCSI ID 5 and is the only tape device on the system, then /dev/rmt/0 will be a symbolic link to /sbus@f,e0001000/esp@1,200000/st@5,0:. The ``@5'' at the end of this path shows that the device is at SCSI ID 5.
Create a symbolic link from the above file to /dev/datlink0. For example,
ln -s /dev/rmt/0 /dev/datlink0
The DAT-Link should now be ready to use.

• Rlogin information required

Hi,
In general on Linux boxes we can find rlogin status in /etc/xinted.d/rlogin
eg : # default: on
2 # description: rlogind is the server for the rlogin(1) program. The server \
3 # provides a remote login facility with authentication based on \
4 # privileged port numbers from trusted hosts.
5 service login

7 disable = no
8 socket_type = stream
9 wait = no
10 user = root
11 log_on_success += USERID
12 log_on_failure += USERID
13 server = /usr/sbin/in.rlogind
14 }
**where can i find this kind of information on Solaris 10. I checked in /etc/inetd.conf but could not find this kind of information**

rlogin is a Solaris 10 service.
"svcs -a | grep rlogin" should show you if it is enabled. "svdadm enable rlogin" should enabled it. But anything you can do with telnet, ftp or rlogin you should also be able to do more securely with ssh and sftp.
