HD 16:9 to SD DVD for viewing on widescreen SD TV

I know this has probably been discussed many times here before but I couldn't find anything with a search. I want to take my 16:9 HD movie and make a SD DVD which will auto zoom to fill a SD Widescreen TV.
Is there any way this can be done? Do I have to make do with letterboxing, which is not ideal when the client has a 28inch Widescreen SD TV, the movie on screen looks so small because of the black bands top & bottom.
One other question, can someone explain what anamorphic 16:9 is?
Many thanks
Mark

Hi, if you are using final cut pro you can take the HD-movie and place it in a 4:3 dv sequence. There you can drag it to the right size. After that you highlight the sequence in the browser and export it using compressor. Anamorphic 16:9 is a 4:3 file with rectangular pixels, when the pixels turns the picture becomes wider.

  • Burning slide show using scrapbook theme to DVD for viewing on TV using DVD

Made a slideshow using scrapbook theme with songs in iPhoto '09. Clicked on burn disk, after disk was complete tried to play in DVD player on a TV and it won't work.
Can anyone tell me how I can keep the scrapbook theme and burn it to a DVD for viewing on TV using a normal DVD player? We want to be able to just put in DVD player and it auto start into the slide show if possible (if not then a button to start slide show). I know you can go into iDVD and burn a slide show with music but it looses the scrapbook theme of random photo's and cluster photo's that we like when viewed in iPhoto.

I also need to solve this problem. I plan to try to export the slideshow to a Quicktime (.mov) and a MPEG4. I think MPEG4 may be recognized by most DVD players. The Quicktime (.mov) should be able to work with an iDVD project.

  • Burning ipod videos to dvds for viewing?

Is there any way to burn ipod videos onto a dvd for watching on a tv? I know there's some way to do it, but I don't know what it is. Anyone know of a program with a free trial i can find somewhere?

Videos purchased from the Itunes Store cannot be burned to DVD as they are DRM (Digital Rights Management) protected and thus locked. As with any DRM file, each has an embedded code within the file that only Apple knows. DRM locks you into where, what and how you enjoy the entertainment you paid for. You own it, but are restricted to how you use it. Hope that helps.

  • How best to copy to cd or dvd for viewing on tv as slide show

want to view photos on tv using cd or dvd - as a slide show - what is best way to do the task?

Easiest way to make a copy of a bootable CD/DVD (assuming you have an optical device that can burn CD/DVDs) is to pop in the disk, launch Disk Utility, select the volume, select File->New->Disk Image from diskXsY, and in the dialog box that pops up, select CD/DVD Master under Image Format and Encryption->None. Once it's finished, eject the CD/DVD, select the image in Disk Utility, and Images->Burn, pop in the blank, and that should do it. Details in Disk Utility->Help->Disk Utility Help->Duplicating a CD or DVD.
The master image format is required for bootable disks.

  • I used i-photo to create a slideshow for a 50th anniversary and was trying to download it to a dvd for viewing on a dvd player but can't seem to get the format right so that the player will recognize it.

i created a slideshow in i-photo and was having trouble creating a dvd that could be shown via a dvd player.have already done a dvd of just the pictures that worked fine, would appreciate any input on this problem

As Quicktime Kirk says: buy the retail iLife 11 disk at various online resellers (the Apple Store no longer carries it); also available at ebay.
Other than that, there is Roxio Toast - an excellent application, but costs $$. I use both Toast and iDVD. I've not used or tried any free apps; I am sure there are some - make sure it is compatible with Macs.

  • Can I transfer my purchased Movie/TV shows to DVD to view on my Television

I am trying to transfer my Purchased TV episodes to DVD for viewing on my blue ray player/TV. Do you need special software to do this?

If you have a TV that will accept it you can connect your iPad directly to the TV and play the movies from there. Use the Apple Composite AV cable.

  • Export settings for viewing on laptop

I have a 40 minute DV NTSC sequence that I exported as Quicktime Movie and then dropped into iDVD and burned a DVD for viewing on TV. That worked fine. I now want to burn another DVD for viewing from laptops. What export setting would I use for that?

Exporting is the same. If there are interlacing issues you might try JES Deinterlacer on the exported file. It may also simply be that the television set, which the MPEG-2 codec is designed for, reproduces the output better than a laptop, which is higher resolution and has a completely different way of displaying images and refreshing the screen. The DVD format however is fixed. There is no DVD for television that is different from DVD for laptops.

  • .MOV for viewing on Television

I have iMovie, Quicktime-Pro, and Toast 8. Is there a method to burn .MOV files to DVD for viewing on a television?
    Thanks!

Thanks. At that time they will be converted in such a manner as to be viewable on a TV via DVD Player?

  • Yes I am an idiot---How to burn content to DVD for TV viewing?

I am sure this has been answered somewhere, but I haven't had any luck finding it. I need idiot-proof step-by-step instructions, if possible.
I am trying to put content from my series 2 TiVo onto DVDs for children's viewing on Sony DVD players in the family room. I have scoured the TiVo and TiVo Community forums but they are too abstruse and technical for me. Given the extremely poor reviews of Popcorn, Toast, Roxio, and Sonic (the current TivoToGo for the Mac solution) I don't want to spend $ and wasted effort.
I have used TiVo Decode Manager to convert TiVo content to MP4 (which works great ONLY on the Mac or iPod). I have used Living Room widget to convert TiVo content to MPEG (which is unreadable on the Mac without buying a Quicktime MP-2 component).
I have burned a Maxell DVD-R using iDVD (it didn't see the MPEG files, but I got them on the DVD using the Burn Folder) which works great on multiple Macs IF run as a Quicktime file or in iTunes. OS X DVD Player doesn't see anything (it asks for Video_TS and Audio_TS files, which aren't there), nor do any Sony DVD players see a disc at all. Please note that I have NO trouble getting TiVo connected to my Mac or transferring content to my Mac.
So, very simple question: I want to burn MP4 or MPEG content that is readable by Sony DVD players. I cannot figure out iDVD to do this. Or do I have to buy Popcorn or Toast?

I want to burn MP4 or MPEG content that is readable by Sony DVD players. I cannot figure out iDVD to do this.
Nope, iDvd won't do this (at least not directly). Toast/Popcorn are better options for what you wish to do.

  • Is DVD Creator good for burning MP4 video to dvd to view on TV

Is DVD Creator by Aimersoft good for burning MP4 video to dvd to view on TV?

I tried the trial and found the theme/menu option too simple to interest me, so I deleted it. I use iDVD to add some pizzazz to my movies and then either burn it with iDVD or Roxio Toast. As for burning mp4: you might need to check on that - as far as I know, movies need to be in an mpeg-2 format to be able to play on a regular DVD player - the apps I use automatically create the correct format.

  • New output option -- dvd for tv viewing

Hi all of you apple peeps,
I'm new to posting here but I've loved reading the forums. I've found them very very helpful, for which I am grateful. I've been working on an oldie version of FCP (4.x) with short educational videos (about 4 mins) that I've posted on the web ok. I am going to be participating in a school event where we'll be showing the videos on a multi-computer installation, and one administrator suggested that I burn them to dvd for tv to sell for a donation so that we can make more educational videos.
I know the quality won't be perfect, since I never intended to make them for tv. I know that I can use dvd pro on the school's computer (my FCP package came with livetype and soundtrack but not dvd studio) to have them encoded for tv, but can anyone please help me with basic steps to note in FCP and then in DVDpro? I have four shorts on the same sequence. Should I make chapter markers in FCP? Will they be 'read' by DVD studio pro? How should I output the files from FCP? Do they need to be compressed first or would that be doubly redundant since DVD studio does this? I will be bringing along a firewire hard drive with the files and will hook them up on the school computer that has a more recent version of FCP and will have DVD pro.
Any basic help is much appreciated. I will be checking more books and online forums, but at this point, with this event, I'm about to drop! Most likely we will be selling to people who are not expecting Speilberg ... at least not this version.
    Thanks in advance!
    Betty

Ha ha, fast response. I used the term Peeps as opposed to Chicks as opposed to ... I guess...chicklets.
I checked out DH's link and wonder -- how to I differentiate the different videos as sections or chapters? I'd like to have the chicklets who view my dvd to be able to select the next video if possible.
Also using the compressor intimidates me. I tried using it a couple of times to no good end (I believe there was a smell of burning tires, or was that hair, while trying to use compressor). At the risk of getting scorned at by you busy professionals, can someone point me to a link of dropping a fcp file into compressor? Can it possibly be as easy sounding as that?

  • I finally was successful in burning a CD of a slideshow I created in iPhoto, however, it is blurry. What is the best way to burn to a CD or DVD for clarity. Also, I realize if burned in iPhoto it will only be playable in iPhoto. Help! This is needed soon!

I finally was successful in burning a CD of a slideshow I created in iPhoto, however, it is blurry. What is the best way to burn to a CD or DVD for clarity. Also, I realize if burned in iPhoto it will only be playable in iPhoto. Help! This is needed soon for a wedding reception!

What version of iPhoto are you using?  How do you plan to view the slideshow at the wedding reception, on a TV screen?  If so then you will need to send the slideshow to iDVD and burn a disk from there.
If you're in iPhoto 11 and the slideshow was created in the slideshow mode and not from an album, then go to the Share menu and select iDVD.  That will create a QT movie of the slideshow and import it into iDVD.
In iDVD select your theme and setup the menu as you'd like.  If you want the movie to begin plahying immediately when the disk is inserted into the DVD player go into the Gallery mode and drag the movie into the Autostart  bin at the left.
If you want the movie to loop continuously go to the Advanced menu and select Loop.
When you're finished setting upb the iDVD project save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will allow you to check it with DVD Player before tryingto burn to disk.  Mount the disk imnage by double clicking on it and launch DVD Player and play.  If the movie plays as you want and everything is good you can  burn to disk with Disk Utility at the slowest speed available to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatium, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Since iDvd is no longer supplied with Lion, what is best to use to burn to dvd for TV?

Since iDvd is no longer supplied with Lion, what is the best product to use to burn to dvd for TV from iMac?  Is there a free solution?

Thank you very much for the link.  I'm in the process of evaluating the trial version of a couple of products other than iDvd.  Since iDvd does not have a trial, I was wondering if you could answer a couple of questions.  Once I'm done, I plan on putting up the resluts of what I've found.  Work is very busy this week, so I probably won't get a chance to work on this much until next week.
Anyway, I'm importing movies from my Sony Handycam DCR-TRV20.  I've used iMovie to perform the download from the camcorder (the other products don't support this).  The other products can work directly on the imported .dv files without having to export things from iMovie as a .mov file.  I have not had time to see if there is a quality difference between a burned DVD with .dv clips vs. .mov imported from iMovie.  So my questions regarding iDvd are as follows:
Can iDvd work directly on .dv files, or do you need to import .mov from iMovie?
If iDvd can work with these files directly, is it easy to do things such as clip them and do affects on them?
Is there a quality difference when viewing a burned DVD if .dv files were used vs. imported .mov files?
Since I have later versions of the iLife products than what comes packaged in the iLife that contains iDvd, can you install only iDvd in what is purchased from Amazon?
Thank you very much is you know the answer to any of these questions.

  • How to get slideshow on dvd for tv

I have a slideshow in iPhoto, also have it as a project in iMovie, and cannot get it onto DVD to view on tv from either place.  Cannot find iDVD on the system, although I can select from iMovie to have share it with iDVD.  It processes it, which takes about 3 minutes, but never opens into iDVD so I can burn it.  I've tried it from finder, and it burns it but won't work on tv dvd player.  Anyone know how to do this?

    Hi
If this is a New Mac - then there is no iDVD on it - even as iMovie think so.
If there is no iDVD on Your Mac (and it's not on newer Macs as Apple discarded it) then You need a program that can do this.
Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs - BUT DVD as Data-DVDs not as Video-DVDs - they need a program to be encoded and STRUCTURED as such.
    • iDVD is part of the boxed version of iLife'11 and can only be bought outside Apple as on Amazon and e-bay
    • DVD Studio pro - Part of FinalCut Studio Pro bundle - this to has expired and can only be bought second handed. (High price and tough learning Curve - but best ever done.)
    • Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)
    • Burn - only free alternative I know of on internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD
    Burn http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html
only You can buy from Apple is
    • FinalCut Pro-X which also can burn to DVD but without any nice themes.
    AppleMan1958
You can also buy Compressor from Apple for $50 US. It will also create DVD and BluRay but without the nice themes.

  • My MacBook Pro will not eject a DVD following viewing.  Help?

My MacBook Pro will not eject a DVD following viewing.   Selecting EJECT
on the controller gives a message of "Supported Disc Not Available".   It is
in the drive and I need to get it out.   How might I proceed?   Thanks for any
    help you can provide.

Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the left mouse button until the disc ejects.
    2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
    3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
    4. Press COMMAND-E.
    5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
         /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into single-user mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above.
To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.
