HD almost full after a wipe.

I took my Macbook Pro into the genius bar today. I had a faulty hard drive that the Genius completely erased in order to get it working properly. I took my Macbook Pro home. I have an external hard drive that had all of my music/photos/docs on so I was prepared to restore it all. I've successfully copied my docs and photos over.
When I went to restore my Itunes library it said there is not enough disk space.
I checked my HD and it says I only have about 9GBs left.
This morning when my HD was working I had more than that left and that included my Itunes library as well as all of Microsoft Office applications I had installed that got erased today.
It seems as though my "old" HD is still taking up space somehow? I should have a lot left, at least enough for my Itunes library that fit just fine before.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Use a program such as WhatSize or Disk Inventory X to determine where the space is being used.

  • "Disk almost full" after taking iBook to Apple store....

....to get a new hard drive. My HD decided to quit (after only 2 yrs), took it to Apple, they sent it out, and replaced the HD. Now my iBook's back, and I keep getting "Startup disk almost full". Wouldn't everything be wiped out when a hard drive is replaced?? What could possibly be taking up all of my memory?? And how do I fix?
I've read many posts in this forum, and when I try to download some software to see where the space is being taken up, it keeps referring back to that message "start up disk..." and the pinwheel keeps spinning and I have to force quit everything. Grrrr.
Thanks for any advice thrown my way!!

    Hi Trebornozel,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I am thinking that when they sent your iBook away they archived your hard drive and then restored it. They might for some reason they might have left an archive of your hard drive on your computer. When you sent your computer in, did the same settings and files come back on your computer? Did you try WhatSize ?
    I hope that helps,
    Jon

  • I'm trying to make some room on my iMac hard rive, which is almost full after 4 years of movies, music, pictures, etc.  I bought an external hard drive and thought I moved most of the movies and pics to the ext drive, but they still show as taking up space

I recently got a message saying that my startup disk was almost full.  I tried moving files on to an external drive to make some space, but the files still show as taking up room when I look at my product info storage.  The files appear to have been moved and deleted off of my internal drive.  I copied them from one to the other and then moved the ones on the internal to my trash and then emptied the trash folder.  What else can I do.   When I open iMovie, even though I moved the movies from the iMovie folder, they still load as iMovie thumbnails, which takes forever.  I appreciate any suggestions.  Thanks.

First of all make sure that you've definitely backed up the movies to your external hard disc.
In iMovie click on any event you don't want, go to the file menu and select 'move event to trash'. Then do the same for any unwanted projects - 'move project to trash'. Quit out of iMovie and empty the trash.
    Hope that helps!

  • HT4847 My icloud storage is almost full on my iphone.  When attempting to free up space, after I click "off" on some backups and do I also press delete backups?

My iphone shows icloud storage is almost full.  (When attempting to free up space) after I turn off some of the backups, do I also have to press "delete backups"?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
That depends on how quickly you want the space back. If you want it immediately, then yes you will need to delete the back up and start a new one.

  • Restore iTunes library from Time Machine, after full hard drive wipe

I had to do a full hard drive wipe on my MBP running 10.6.6, so I made a full Time Machine backup before hand. I reinstalled os x (10.6.3) and used migration assistant to restore my files from the Time Machine backup.
Most of this process has been painless, however, when I open iTunes it's empty. I have all the music files, iTunes Library.itdb, iTunes Library Extras.itdb and iTunes Library Genius.itdb. Is there a way to restore my previous iTunes library with these files? I feel like this should be a pretty basic thing to do but I haven't found much/any documentation of it online. Any help would be much appreciated.

Take the files that you list and the iTunes music folder from the TM b/u and drag them to the iTunes folder. To put it in simpler terms - drag the iTunes folder from the TM to the same location on the internal HD.
By default the path should be HD>User>Your Account>Music>iTunes(your iTunes files are here)>iTunes Music (your music files are here)

  • Storage is almost full message after purchasing more storage

I had been getting messages that my storage was almost full and to manage my setting.  I have 1 iphones, 1 ipod, 1 ipad on my account and my storage was almost full.  So I bought additional storage 15gb.  This was a few weeks ago and now on every device it is saying that my storage is almost full again, but when you go into setting and manage the storage it says that there is 13.2gb available ...
why is this happening?  How do I resolve this?

Perhaps the warning message is referring to storage ON THE DEVICE, not iCloud. If so you'll have to delete files to free up space. Look at videos first, as they take up a lot of memory on devices.

  • Why is my Macbook pro with OS lion prompting me my startup disk almost full when i have deleted many files, photos and videos? Even thrashing them doesn't help. There seems to be an automatic space usage in the background

I have deleted many unwanted files and apps and yet the available space keeps depleting every time i am using my Macbook Pro. I believe under the OS 10.7.4 one of the features is it backups or has backgrounding features which uses memory. Sometimes even when i hv 8GB space after using my Macbook Pro for say 2hrs surfing internet and using Pages which has a "Save Version" feature suddenly my 8GB goes down to 300+MB only and it starts prompting me "My Startup Disk is almost full" once it reaches 1GB space left. How can i get more space.... Please someone can help me? Do i need to re-format my hardisk??!! Any help out there is greatly appreciated.
My original HD is 320GB. And i don't hv too many Apps installed. I do have abt 50-70apps. I do have many photos and videos stored in iPhoto's Library though.

One thing I've noticed is that a shared tab pops up when I open the finder under "favorites" with a random connection. It's called hp68b... None of my friends that I live with have this and we all use the same internet. Two days ago when I would click it and click get info, it said it was a pc. When I checked it today it said it is a "sharepoint" and looks like a harddrive.
I took it too the store after i spilt water on it but when I got it back it ran perfectly fine. I don't know a lot about computer so if somebody could help me. It says I'm connected to it and I can't disconnect or delete it. I don't know if the guy at the computer store put something in my computer and is sharing all my files.

  • I have a Mac Air. It said my start up disk was almost full and to delete files. I did but am not sure of what all I should delete. Then the color wheel wouldn't stop spinning so I just closed it. Now it won't open up at all. What can I do?

I deleted files from my MacBook Air after it said my start up disk was almost full. It did several xs, then the color wheel wouldn't stop spinning, so I closed it. Then after a sufficient amount of time, I tried to start it up again, only now the Apple start up wheel just spins non stop and nothing else happens. How or what can I do to get my MacBook Air to work again, without having to take it in? Thanks so much!

Backup your MBA then take it to Apple

  • ICloud Storage is Almost Full

I have now received an E Mail from iCloud Support that my storage space is almost full.  The first time I got the E Mail, I scheduled a call with Apple Support to confirm that the E Mail was wrong.   It says I have 0.2 GB of free space when I in fact have almost 2.0 GB of free space.   Apple confirmed this.
Now the E Mail came again and I assume it will come more times until Apple realizes it has some sort of error generating this E Mail.
It would be nice if Apple allowed for E Mail support or at least responses to their messages sent to users.   Perhaps posting this will help in that Apple might see it and fix the problem.
    Dear Name,
Your iCloud storage is almost full. You are currently using 4.8 GB of 5 GB total storage.
Your iCloud storage is used for iCloud Mail and to automatically back up the most important data on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch — your photos and videos, device settings, app data, messages, and more.
iCloud Drive and iCloud-enabled apps, like Keynote, Pages, and Numbers, also use iCloud storage to automatically keep your files up-to-date across your devices.
Learn more about iCloud Drive >
To continue using these iCloud features without interruption, you can upgrade your storage plan from your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac.
    iOS 8:
    1)
Go to Settings and tap iCloud.
    2)
    Tap Storage.
    3)
    Tap Buy More Storage.
    OS X:
    1)
Go to System Preferences and click iCloud.
    2)
    Click Manage.
    3)
    Click Buy More Storage.
Or you can reduce the amount of iCloud storage you’re using. Learn how to manage your iCloud storage >
Important: If you exceed your storage plan, your devices will stop backing up to iCloud. iCloud Drive and iCloud-enabled apps will no longer update across your devices, and you will not be able to send or receive messages with your iCloud email address.

Here's a tip: Part of what I do is photography, so I normally treat my iPhone as another camera. So, what I do is after I have finished taking some shots/videos with it, I download them to my computer (in my case, via Aperture). For everyone else, on the Mac there is the free Image Capture app, or the iPhoto app (which, if you have the latest version of Lion, it isn't built in there, so you would have to download it from the App Store for a fee).
I have made it a habit to use this method whenever I finish taking pictures at the end of a day (but that's just me). Also, keep in mind that the videos that you take on your iPhone can take up a lot of space very quickly (for instance, one minute of 720p HD video recorded on the iPhone takes up over 300 MB of space!), so you would need to keep that in mind when shooting videos. SO, to answer your questions above:
    1) Right.
    2) No, because it is only a backup, not the Camera Roll itself.
    3) You should not be worried about deleting the iCloud backup of the iPhone Camera Roll. What would happen (in terms of the method) is that you first would download them to iPhoto first, then delete the images from your Camera Roll. This then would free up your iCloud storage space. Lastly, placing them in your iPhoto app will not tell your backup on your phone to delete them. When you delete the images from your camera roll, your "backup" will be smaller in size than it was beforehand.... Hopefully that made sense.

  • My storage on my iCloud is almost full, and I turned off some apps that I don't want to be backed up. So if I press the button delete back up, is it going to delete all of the apps that I'm backing up, or just the ones that I turned off?

I keep on getting E-mails that notifies me that my storage is almost full. I don't want to press that button until my question has been answered.

It will delete the entire backup, so you'll have to back up again after doing this.  The new backup will only contain the apps (and other data) that you have selected and omit the ones you turned off.

How do I delete items stored in the cloud and clear it so I can get it working? It will not store any more photos. I cannot use it. It is almost full. I don't want to buy any more storage at this time. I delegated some photos on my iPad and MacBook and nothing changes.

    # Yes, if you go to accounts.firefox.org, sign out, you will now be signed out.
    # Sign back in, and you will be asked to save the password you entered.
    # This will save the password and autocomplete if you have this option turned on.
I am not exactly sure why the menu did not detect the password change or if it was stored incorrectly after you changed it? But after storing the correct password you can manage any duplicate passwords in the password manager.[[Password manager - Remember, delete and change saved passwords in Firefox]]

  • Huge Syncing bug when iPad is almost full

    Hi,
Just wanted to report I've just encountered a huge bug some minutes ago.
My iPad1 16gb (4.3.3) was almost full, there were something like 491mb left.
Tried to sync it via iTunes (10.3.1) which was unable to sync and import purchased apps cos it considered there was no space left on the device. I must say sync was set on manual, apps were not to be synced automatically, as for videos, photos and everything else.
Tried once again and same result. Unable to sync cos' iPad is full.
At this point, iTunes just crashed.
Relaunched it and tried to sync iPad a third time, which failed eventually.
At this particular point, iTunes just told me it was unable to read iPad's content and that I had to restore it…
I feel like there's something really weird which is happening here. I mean, there were 500 mb left and iTunes considered iPad full… which means it can be quite a huge problem for 16gb iPad owners if this bug is "spread" — or say generic.
BTW, I could have lost 2 months of hard work (and it is quite ironic as it was some work for an ebook to be sold on iBookStore soon) if I had not backed-up everything before (when there were 1gb left on iPad). In other words, the device I'm using a lot in my creative process could have screwed me. I wanted to use only iPad and iPhone for some projects but this event shows me it's just a dangerous idea.
If anybody encountered the same problem, feel free to report it.

Well, as I've said, fortunately I backed up everything and i'm backing up on a regular basis since those works are precious. I've just lost some saves from recent games I've purchased and that's it.
I've tried to sync an iPhone 3GS (1.2 gb left) and no problem.
Reinstalled iTunes just in case, after iPhone sync.
Then, I tried something with my iPhone 3GS. I've stuffed it so that there were something like 330mb left and…
same problem just happened. iTunes unable to sync, iTunes crashed, third sync and unable to read iPhone's content then restored iPhone 3GS.
Don't know if some app is involved, i've had quite a lot of problems with Real Racing 2 HD which crashed a lot on iPad but the app is not installed on my iPhone.
I'll try to find the crash report and post it tomorrow. Sorry, it's 2 A.M. in Europe and I'm a little bit in need of sleep.
Thank you for your concern anyway. Good to see the community is very reactive.

  • Device Storage Almost Full

Hi. I've had a Blackberry Z30, current OS 10.2.1.3062, since late April 2014. In the last couple of days I've had notifications about the "Device Storage Almost Full".
I've done a complete security wipe to try to resolve this issue (as advised on another forum). I've tried a Factory reset (as advised on another forum - a Google search reveals lots of fellow BB owners with an identical issue, but so far no actual explanations as to what's happening, or solutions that work for me!). I have NO documents, videos, music, or any other downloaded files saved on my phone, and minimal apps too. The largest app is The Sims FreePlay - 785.4, and total storage listed for apps is 1.84Gb
Each time, I reinstall fewer and fewer apps, yet over an hour or more, I can actually look at the Device Monitor periodically and watch the Storage being filled up with more and more 'System' files, whatever these may be! If I look at the Device Monitor, Memory, System, it shows that during the night, when I am in 'Bedside Mode' in the last two days it has downloaded 9.5Gb of data - this drops to almost nothing during the day when I'm actually USING the phone. However, this evening, I recorded the following stats, with no corresponding download of data over wi-fi during the same period, so I'm not sure if these two things are actually related!
    The stats were:
18:28 - Just backed up the phone, not being actively used by me, Wi-fi switched off for test purposes, mobile network still connected
    Storage showed at 18:28: System - 1.77Gb, Apps - 1.83Gb, User - 135Mb, Free - 9.45Gb
18:31 - Wi-fi turned on, played Sims FreePlay for 30 minutes
    19:04 - Device Monitor checked
    Storage showed at 19:04: System - 3.58Gb
19:04-19:24 - Switched to Bedside Mode for test purposes
    Storage showed at 19:24: System - 8.63Gb
19:25-19:30 - Phone not being actively used
    Storage showed at 19:30: System - 9.79Gb
19:31 - Received notification "Device storage almost full"
    Storage showed: System - 10.12Gb
    Currently at System 10.97Gb, User - 134Mb, Apps - 1.84Gb, Free 255Mb
This seems to be the maximum amount of space System can take up. Once it reaches this level, it remains static and does not increase any more. If I'm lucky, some of the random things I've been trying manage to actually clear it (or it appears so - may just be coincidence!), until the next time. When it starts piling on the pounds faster than a Weight Watcher at an all you can eat buffet (i.e. ME !)
I've owned SimsFreePlay for several months and my children, as well as myself, have been using it regularly. This week is the first time I've seen this issue, so I'm not sure if the game can be blamed!
Sometimes, I can do a restart by holding the power button and it clears out the excess System data, but not always (more often doesn't help than does). Once, I managed to clear out the excess by 'Resetting Sync Relationships' in BBLink (although that could just have been coincidental as it hasn't worked any time since!). I've tried 'rebooting' through holding down the higher and lower volume buttons simultaneously, as someone advised someone else on another forum when I Googled the issue.
I've tried browsing the folders and files via the USB connection to the PC to clear out any other rogue data that may be filling it up. I have no Android apps side-loaded since the first security wipe. Once, I actually did nothing (was just poised, about to do another reluctant wipe and restore of the OS, so was glad I saved myself the bother!) and it cleared itself out spontaneously!
Would dearly LOVE it if someone with more nous than myself can point me in a direction I haven't yet tried please The phone, once it reaches it's maximum bloat, becomes completely unusable - hub can't download even a single email or text, or even display ones I have stored there. Many of the apps can't even start and sometimes even Device Monitor is unable to load too so I can see what's going on!! I'm well and truly stuck for ideas now, so thank you for any suggestions you may have that might help

Hello and thanks for your detailed iinfo.
So...let me summarize this: during the day, under normal use (WiFi OFF and data service ON) the phone`s storage is staying the same. Then you switch WiFi ON and start playing the SIM game and according to your time line, in aprox 60 min, the phone runs out of storage....
Have you tryied to take a look at your "Device Monitor" > "Storage" before the phone becomes unusable, just to see what`s eating up your storage space?

  • Tried to backup ibooks to PC using iTools, now iTunes will not open the backup folder and my iPad says that it's storage is almost full

It appears that iTools has backed up on the iPad as well, I tried manage storage from settings but all storage settings are not enabled. I downloaded iTools on my PC and pressed the backup on iBooks in applications, it created a folder on my PC that iTunes on the PC cannot read. I stopped what was called backing up to local when I got a message from the iPad saying that storage was almost full.
So how do I 1- repair the iPad storage
2- backup the books in IBooks to my PC (they used to backup easily with iTunes but after the last update of iTunes they just would not)
    Thanks

No, nothing at all happens. Once clicked the 'circle' that suggest it is loading appears (if that makes sense) but no, nothing
    Many thanks.
Can you check something for me please?
Restart your PC. after the PC restarts, bring up your Task manager, and go to the "Processes" tab. Click "Image name" to sort the processes alphabetically.
    Now try to launch iTunes.
Does an itunes.exe process appear? If so, does it vanish after a second or so, or does it persist in the Processes tab (even though iTunes itself never shows up)?

  • Why do I get "Storage almost full" warnings with multiple Gb free?

I have a 32Gb iPad Mini (running latest OS updates and all current apps), and keep getting "Storage Almost Full" warnings, even when I have 3, 4 or 5Gb free space (according to desktop sync)?

About all I use it for when I get these errors  is reading a book. No apps are running other than iBooks. I happens before and after a power-off.
I'm going to see if I can hunt down a good memory reporting app to see if I can find out what's going on...
