HD already partitioned -  what do I need from Boot Camp?

Hi guys,
I partitioned my HD when I installed Leopard, and now I want to install XP. I tried to run Boot Camp, but it refused to start because my HD was already partitioned. So do I actually need to run Boot Camp before I install windows? Or is it ok if I dont? What does it do/provide besides HD partitioning?
Thanks in advance
A

For Boot Camp to run the way it should you need to install OSX using the entire HD then run the Boot Camp Utility to partition the drive. Once that is done insert the Windows CD and install. Once Windows has installed then insert the Leopard disc or the first disc of your Leopard recovery set (while in Windows) and run the .exe file on it which will contain all the drivers that you need. When starting up your Mac hold the Option key down to bring up the boot menu so you can choose what OS you wan to run.
You MUST run the Boot Camp Utility for this to work. I have Vista on mine for gaming and Boot Camp worked very well.

  • What is special about a Boot Camp partition?

I have a somewhat complicated partition setup. Boot Camp Assistant, naturally, refuses to add a partition. I intend to eventually boot Windows directly and use Parallels to virtualize, but as far as I can tell Parallels insists on having a genuine Boot Camp partition to virtualize.
How can I emulate what Boot Camp does to a partition to trick everyone into thinking the partition was created with Boot Camp?

Boot Camp Assistant will only create a partition on an OS X drive that only has one partition - Macintosh HD. If you have more than one partition on your hard drive, then Boot Camp will not create another partition.
If you want to create a bootable Windows partition on a drive that has more than one partition already, then you need to use a third-party boot loader such as Boot Runner or The rEFInd Boot Manager. I cannot tell you if these work with Parallels.

  • How do I protect my FileVault partition from Boot Camp?

I have an iMac running OS X Yosemite and Boot Camp with Windows 8.1. The OS X partition is protected with FileVault, but when I boot into Windows (rEFInd Boot Manager), I can access my Yosemite partition from Windows, without entering a password at any point, other than the login for my Windows user. I encrypted my OS X partition with FileVault after I installed Boot Camp and Windows, maybe this is why?
I want to make sure my OS X partition is protected in case of theft. Right now believe I that I would be able to boot the iMac with Active@ Boot Disk (or similiar), reset my Windows-passwod and access the OS X partition that way around.
Can anyone explain why I am able to access my FileVault-protection OS X partition from Windows?
Can I solve this without installing BitLocker on the Windows partition? I only use it for gaming, so it doesn't contain anything of importance.

    Hey Loner
I think you might have misunderstood my problem. I am able to boot into both OS X and Windows without any problems. I can read the OS X partition from Windows without any problems as well. My issue is, that I’d think that the OS X partition should NOT be visible from Windows, as it is FV encrypted.

  • Setup.exe from Boot Camp won't work with Windows Xp Home SP2

    Hi,
I just bought the great MacBook Pro. So I work over years in Windows it's absolutliy necessary to migrate my old System to MacBook. I succeeded in cloning my old installation completly to the MacBook and Windows is activated. when I start windows, of course no MacBook drivers are installed, so I have only a minimum of functionality. Now I want to start the BootCamp to install the drivers. But if I start "Setup.exe" it's ending immediately with: There were errors... before Boot camp could be initialized.
I downloaded the newest BootCamp (3.1) and start it, the program crashes!
I can't get it working!!! What have I to do - please help me!
I use Windows XP Home SP2.
    Thanks!

If you didn't try installing Boot Camp from your OS X disc, try that first.
From what you wrote it sounds like you somehow cloned your old install of windows over to a fresh partition. Depending on how you did this, the problem might lie here.
First, what version of OSX are you running?
If your MacBook Pro is new, it should come with Snow Leopard, which wouldn't explain the problem.
How exactly did you clone windows over?
Depending on how you cloned windows, your easiest solution might be to back up any files and applications you need from windows, remove the current Windows partition, and create a new partition and installation of Windows through Boot Camp on OSX. Normally Boot Camp should install its drivers after a successful installation of Windows.

  • "Booting from Boot Camp Assistant created USB Drive...Failed to load BOOTMGR"

Hi Apple Ppl of the Wrld: I need help I been working on installing windows 8 on my Mac.
    Spec of equipment:
    Mac Book Pro Mid 2012
    Bootcamp Version: Version 5.0.4 (473)
Bootable USB Flash Drive: Type Scan disk 4 GB windows 8 pro iso image but without the driver and the 2nd Scan disk USB flash drive with 32 GB with the Bootcamp Drivers downloaded and saved to this drive.
Please Note: I also have the original back up installation disc for Microsoft 8 Prof 64 from Microsoft where I purchased it from.
1st Bootcamp is not recognizing the Original Microsoft 8 Pro backup disk from microsoft itself.
Solution: I created the New Image from the Original Microsoft installed disc in my desk top and changed the extension to .ISO then burned the ISO image into the newly purchased DVD+R. Then I ran Bootcamp Once again and it get the following error message "The installer disc could not be found -- Insert your Windows installer disc and wait a few seconds for the disc to be recognized. Solution
2: Created a bootable usb drive with bootcamp assistant successfully with bootcamp. Yes I close, ejected or un-mounted any image that was open or had been previously used then i restarted the Mac. Next, I start the bootcamp assistant tool once again then i get the same insert your windows installer disc message.
3: Then I try to resolve the installer disc not found issue: this are the steps i took: a). Lauch disc utilities
        1. Selected the top most drive 750 GB Macintosh HDD
        2. On the right you’ll see 5 tab buttons: First Aid | Erase | Partition | RAID | Restore.
        3. Choose Partition. Then I clicked + to add another partition size of the partition was 222 GB
        4. Change the Name of the Partition to BOOTCAMP
        5. Change the Format to MS-DOS (FAT)
        6. Click Apply to save the changes and then reboot your Mac and we’ll begin Windows installation.
        7. During reboot, press and hold the alt/Option key and you’ll be presented with drives to boot from.
        8. Use the arrow keys and return button to select the Windows yellow USB key drive containing your Windows 8 installation files.
        9. This will begin the Windows install. --> then i get the following message: "Booting from Boot Camp Assistant created USB Drive...Failed to load BOOTMGR".
4: Take the Mac to best buy and let them resolve the issue and charge me like a million dollars for it :'( since i have no other idea who to get this bootcamp working at all. This has been a terribly lengthy issue and it is not as simple as it is claimed to be since i started with the Original Windows Disc Purchased from Microsoft and I have the Optical disc drive which it should be simpler from what I understand.
Please can you help It would be of great help.

from what i understand you are trying to install win 8 pro from a "backup disk" the one that you purchased from microsoft.
this will not work, it is not an installer disk.
you need to start the process again. erase the partition you made on your hdd. in disc utility click the minus button after selecting the bootcamp partition, then manually drag the divider down fully then apply.
next, erase your usb then format it.
    download win 8 iso from here;
    http://getintopc.com/softwares/operating-systems/download-windows-8-pro/
it is perfectly legal to use your purchased product key in this install.
in bootcamp select the iso image you just downloaded, select your preferred partition size, check all 3 options.
you have the support software on another usb but you wont need it so it can be discarded. the install will work far better with the iso and support on the same drive.

  • Boot Camp For Lion -- USB ISO Method --"Booting from Boot Camp Assistant created USB Drive...Failed to load BOOTMGR"

Hello, has anyone had experience with dealing with this speciifc problem?
In short, upon rebooting, I am getting a black screen with a line of text that says, "Booting from Boot Camp Assistant created USB Drive...Failed to load BOOTMGR." Nothing happens after that.
I am using Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4. I have an ISO of Windows 7 Prof. along with an 8GB usb drive. I changed the coding in my bootcamp program to allow for the normally first invisible option that allows creation of a USB Installation program using an ISO that is normally only for computers without an optical drive.
I have that box checked, the check for new software box, and the install windows box checked. I went through the process of creating the USB, downloading the software, and partitioning the drive. Then on restart, I get the failed to load bootmgr error.
Some people have suggested using two usb drives for this. I am trying that method but it does not seem to help thus far.
    Can anyone offer any help?
    Thanks.

  • I can't start windows 7 normally from Boot Camp

I can't start windows 7 normally from Boot Camp.
It was running fine since I have installed it 7 months ago, but now it can't start or (restart) normally (safe mode is ok). It displays a black screen after showing the logo, and I have to shut down the machine. My Mac system is working fine. Mac technician (Genius Bar) has run a surface scan to verify hd integrity and proofed ok, but could not give any advice on Windows issues.
Please advice if anything I should do before cleaning up my partition and reinstall Windows.

I would guess and sorry for asking but you already tried booting from Windows 7 DVD and doing auto repair?
There are dozens of things to look at and do, and begin with chkdsk in Windows, yes but that only looks at one aspect. You can't really check for bad sectors on a drive's sectors. The best? to use the drive vendor's own utility actually, often with a linux boot CD or Windows program (they don't make Mac OS versions, one reason I first installed Vista over 5 yrs ago)
    Restore check points
    Uninstall last update or driver
Clean the system of debris temp files, caches, registry errors, fonts and left overs
make sure you have 20% and 12GB free space or more
A hard shutdown can create more problems.

  • Migrate from Boot Camp to Parallels

I've followed the threads about using the Boot Camp partition as a VM in Parallels, but I want to know if there is an advantage to keeping the Boot Camp partition if I doubt I'll ever need to re-boot into Boot Camp. I'm thinking I want to migrate my WinXP installation from Boot Camp into Parallels, and then delete the Boot Camp partition alltogether. How would I do this, and am I just making extra work for myself?

  • OS X Partition split and duplicated when creating Boot Camp partition

    Hi,
I have installed a larger internal HD 3TB into my iMac Late 2009 21.5 inch. All went well until I used Boot Camp to set up a Windows partition. My intention to have an OS X partition of 2.8TB and a Boot Camp partition of 200 GB. I am running the latest version of Yosemite.
Once the Boot Camp partition completed, and Windows 7 installed successfully, I have rebooted in OS X to find that the HD is now showing as a Partition of 200GB for Boot Camp, a partition of 2TB for Macintosh HD (with all my applications and data etc), and a second Macintosh HD partition of 800GB, also containing all my applications and data etc which appears to have been duplicated. Prior to completing the Boot Camp process, the internal HD was showing correctly as a single partition of 3TB.
I have completed this process twice, with the same result. After the first occasion, I reformatted the new internal HD and started completely from blank again (as I was unable to erase or change the duplicated partition in Disk Utility).
I used Migration Assistant to transfer my files, data etc from the old Internal HD which is now an external HD.
Any thoughts on what I am doing incorrectly?

This is expected behavior. On your Mac, the 3TB disk is partitioned to allow Windows to function properly in BIOS mode. BIOS mode (and CSM-BIOS, to be precise) has a limitation of a 2TB disk. on a larger disk (including 3TB Fusion drives), the disk is partitioned in such a manner that the Windows adheres to the 2TB limit.
You can can see the exact partitioning, if you are so inclined, using the following Terminal commands.
    diskutil list
    diskutil cs list
sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0
    sudo fdisk /dev/disk0
The "sudo" commands will prompt for your password, and it will not be echoed back. You may also see a warning about improper use of "sudo" and potential data loss due to "abuse" of the command.

  • I have os x 10.6.6 and I need to remove a partition from boot camp and I no longer have a boot camp assistant...HELP!!!

HELP!     You've heard of builders who never get their house finished?  Well, I have a husband who could do this and a friend of my husband's who can also but they REFUSE to help me or at least keep forgetting (conveniently).  I'm at wits end and am contemplating taking it to the shop.  UGH!!   I no longer have a boot camp assistant (I tried to do this before last year and gave up and bought a pc as my work programs wouldn't work with Mac.)  What can I do?
    Thank you!!!!!

Niels approach to get the BootCamp Assistant back is recommended because usually the correct way to remove your Windows partition is to use the BootCamp Assistant again which should give you the option to remove the made Windows partition and revert back to one OSX volume.
After that's done a reboot of your Mac might be advisable.
Only if that's not working (whatever the reason) :
    1) boot your Mac from your OSX install DVD
    2) choose your language and then 'ignore' (cancel) the installation
    3) from the Top Menu (Utilities) start Disk Utility (DU)
    4) in DU click on your harddisk (not any partition) in the left pane (the first item listed)
    5) in the right pane use the 'Partition'-Tab
    6) click to highlight on the ex-Windows partition you want to delete
    7) click on the small '-' Button at the bottom
That should delete your former Windows partition
    After that's done successfully
    8) Drag the partition separator line until it encompasses the entire drive and then select apply.
    9) Quit Disk Utility
    10) reboot your Mac from your harddisk.
Since you are 'fumbling' with your OSX partition you should consider having/making a backup of it before trying the a.m. procedure. Just in case.
