HD and Standard def - Same channel?

I notice a lot of the HD channels also have a matching Stadard Definition version.  It appears the content is the same.  Besides the marketing ploy of boosting the number of channels delivered, why not drop the Standard Def versions?  I personally will be making it so they are skipped (using Parental Controls if  ihave to) when browsing the channels.  Wouldn't mind not seeing them in the Guide as well.

The most obvious reason is that there are many installations that use SD only boxes (qip-2500 AND dct-700).  With the exception of the NY metro area, there is a major price differential between the SD boxes and HD boxes (from the users side).  The DCT-700 is $3.99 (not counting those of us who have them from the analog shutoff for free), the QIP-2500 is $5.99 and the HD (non-DVR) boxes are $9.99.  For multiple sets, that is a huge bump in monthly costs.  Also, it would require Verizon to have enough stock of the HD boxes to replace all the SD boxes.  There was a major supplier (Motorola) issue a while back.
For those that haven't made the move to HD (and no, I'm not one of those) they would say just the opposite - why not get rid of the HD channels, I can't use them !

  • Seasons pass TV show HD + Standard Def versions?

    I recently purchased an HD seasons pass of the current AMC series "The Killing" It wants to download both the HD and standard definition versions of each episode. I placed all the standard def shows on hold in the download queue so that I'm only downloading the HD versions.
    Is there a setting somewhere to indicate you only want the HD version or will it always download both HD and Standard def when you purchase HD programs. I'd prefer HD only since I'm under monthly data cap download limitations.

  • Fios TV signal loss in HD and standard Definition

    I am losing FIOS tv signals in HD and standard Def.
    I have disconnected and reconnected the cables, I am still losing signals.
    What else can I do?

    Can you be more specific?
    Does it happen on all your boxes (do you have more than 1)?
    If so, try coax connections starting at ONT.
    make sure they are all tight.
    What indications are you getting?
    Do you get an error message or just loss of audio/video?

  • Sound Cutting Out on Standard Def Channels with or wthout DVR

    Hi!
    We are having occasional sound drop-out problems. They seem to only be happening on standard def channels although we have a hi-def box.  (We often record sitcoms and kids shows in standard def to save room on the DVR.)
    The problem is that the sound cuts out for a fraction of a second (just long enough to notice) at random spots.  If we rewind and play it back, it still drops out in the same spot so it seems the issue is with the signal getting to the box from the outside line, not an hdmi cable issue as I've seen mentioned elsewhere.
    The issue occurs whether we're watching a previously recorded show or a "live" one (understanding that even the live shows are delayed a few seconds to enable the DVR to record it).
    I've seen other sound issues related to switching channels but this is not the case here.
    I've also had it happen on a small TV with no box. We just have the coax going right into the display to watch standard def  network shows on it.  This leads me to think it's a signal issue, not a DVR one.
    Anyone else have this and/or have any luck in getting it resolved?
    Thanks!
    Jeff

    I'm trying to develop a simple program that will send and receive files from the server and in the same time I need to communicate with the server through the messages
    I'm using TCP Socket
    my problem is
    I have only one channel
    so, I have no option, either I can use it for sending the file itself or sending the message .. but not both !
    my question is : How can I use the same channel for sending and receiving (file & message)
    I would appreciate for any clue or hint

    yes, that what I'm thinking to do
    but, in case of sending binary file, if I attached a flag on its header, will it corrupt the file ?
    bestThe other end would of course need to decode the messages that you get, and only write the "data" part to the file.Thanks
    I'm gonna try to hard-code what you suggest and i will post what happen with me here
    even though I'm not sure how can I add header to a binary file and remove it from the file at other end. (coz I read it as stream and send as array without touching its contents)
    this how I'm sending the file
    ConnSocket = CSocket.accept();
    ToClient = new DataOutputStream(ConnSocket.getOutputStream());
    File myFile = new File("abc.jpg");
    FileInputStream myFileInStream = new FileInputStream(myFile);
    BufferedInputStream mybuffInStream = new BufferedInputStream(myFileInStream);
    myBytArray = new byte[(int) myFile.length()];
    mybuffInStream.read(myBytArray, 0, myBytArray.length);
    ToClient.write(myBytArray, 0, myBytArray.length);
    ToClient.flush();
    myFileInStream.close();best

    * The bug app was arguably generating bogus test data (messages with duplicate ids), and 99.9% of applications won't be configured this way (using multiple ChannelSets with overlapping Channels, pointing at the same server) but it's still worth making this work just right anyways.

  • Same Channel on Different WLANs and RTS/CTS

    Hi
    I have 2 questions about physical layer of wireless lan.
    1-) Many WLANs(SSID) use same channel for communication, that means they use same frequency, what prevents the collisions between different wlans but same channel?( I am asking about RF signal collision)
    2-) Do rts and cts valid for just one wlan that computer which is generated, belongs to or do rts/cts synchronize all different wlans that use same frequency.
    Thanks.

    1.) Congestion Avoidance.  Before the client transmits, it listens to for energy on the frequency it is transmitting on.  If it hears energy, it backs off for a time.  Then listens again.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrier_sense_multiple_access_with_collision_avoidance  take a look at the diagram on the left
    2.) RTS/CTS client sends the RTS, then the AP will send the CTS.

  • How to create stacked bar and standard bar on same graph

    Can OBIEE can both Stacked and Standard bar graph on the same analysis by using Line-Bar graph type? For example, I have four measure: Target revenue, Revenue, Billed Quantity, and Target Quantity. I would like to create an analysis that includes all these four measure. On the same graph, I would like to use Stacked subtype for Target revenue and Revenue, use standard subtype for Billed quantity and use line for Target quantity. I tried, but could not find any way to put stacked subtype and standard subtype on the same graph. Do you know if this feature is available from OBIEE?

    I tried to do this and was a bit successful. I used the paint catalog. Created a a request with 6 columns assuming units and dollars be stacked and Year ago units to be a line:
    Brand Units Dollars 0 Year_Ago_units 1
    Added a new request (Combined with similar request and selected paint subject area): Now in this request my columns are:
    Brand 0 0 Year_Ago_Dollars Year_Ago_units 2
    Assuming Year_Ago_Dollars be standard in your case.
    Created a chart view with brand and 1 on x axis and Units, Dollars, Year_Ago_Dollars on y axis and line as Year_Ago_units.
    Now able to see what I am expecting. May be you need to tweak a bit more according to your requirement.
    Let me know if this is of any help!
    Thanks.

    when extending my wifi network using an Extreme as my main and an Express to extend.. does it help to make sure that both devices are on the same channel or does it even make a difference if they are on different channels?

    Have you even tried the process in which i have described in my previous post?
    Yes, many times.  If you are setup to "extend a wireless network, the screen looks like this:
    If you click the Wireless Options button, the screen looks like this:
    Where is it on this screen that you see a setting to adjust the channel?  It sounds like you are confusing "create a wireless network"....which does allow you to adjust channels.....with "exend a wireless network" which does not.
    Normally, when you extend a wireless network, AirPort Utility used to always assign the same channel to the extending device. That is no longer the case. It might be the same, or it might be different.  You have no control over this, so you have to accept what AirPort Utility thinks is best.

  • Capturing Varicam HD footage at standard def and more!!!

    Hi there, i hope some one can be of help to me on this one.
    ok, basically i am preparing a project which i intend to shoot on a Panasonic Varicam to edit on FCP via firewire drives. I have done this before on another project and edited (with great difficulty) at full resolution, even though the final project was delivered in standard def. Taking this on board and knowing that this project will also not need to be delivered at HD size i would like to capture the footage at standard def.
    Firstly, i just wanted to check that this should be as simple as plugging the Varicam into our G5 and capturing at DV size?
    Secondly, is there any way that we can capture the Varicam footage at standard def while still capturing at the higher frame rates the Varicam offers?
    Also, there seems there could inherantly be some problems with using the variable frame rate with the Panasonic Varicam and FCP. Any advice or pointers with this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance for any advice anyone can give on this

  • Is SQL Server Express 2012 the same as Enterprise, BI and Standard?

    We are a software company in the process of modifying code to work with SQL Server 2012 & 2014.  We are doing development work and testing on SQL Server Express 2012. (We plan to move to SQL Server Express 2014, soon.)  Is SQL Server Express
    the same code as Enterprise, BI and Standard?   Will our tests and dev work be valid?  Should the need arise at a customer site, will SQL Server Express database migrate to Enterprise, BI or Standard?

    Hello,
    Yes, you can use detach/attach or backup/restore. Alternatively, you may want to perform and edition upgrade
    of an existing SQL Server instance when possible.

  • P2 standard def and Anamorphic Override

    Hi,
    Since 10.0.6 you can now work with P2 standard def anamorphic 16:9 footage in fcpx. Before that there was no way to tell fcpx that you where working with 16:9 footage and it would always show as 4:3. Now we have the Anamorphic override in the clip settings view.
    But one issue I have with this is that it still shows the clips as 4:3 when I watch the clip from the Event Library. As soon as I insert the clip in a timeline it obeys the anamorphic override setting and displays correctly.
    Am I doing something wrong?
    This is not a huge issue, but rather annoying to have to look at all the clips with the wrong aspect ratio in the event library...
    Thanks!

    I don't have any files imported in fcpx from tape. The other DV MOV files I have tested(that works as they should) are either exported from Avid or from some unknown encoder at my tv network.
    The only difference I can see in the QT inspector is that the MOV generated from the P2 MXF has format: 'dvcp' and the other files have format: DV - PAL. Both report 720x576 which is correct.
    'dvcp' seems to be some kind of Apple DV according to this document.
    I just don't see any other explanation to why these files obey the anamorphic override(widescreen or 4:3) in the timeline and not in the event library...
    I can upload some examples of you would like to try it out.

    They are the same product.
    The "full" is a traditional perpetual license. Install - register - activate - use.
    Does not "call home" to validated that is a paid for install (the one time activation takes care of that).
    Internet? Connectivity is needed in order to download and install updates.
    (& Yes, you do want those)
    The "subscription" license will require periodic internet connectivity. If I recall correctly all "subscription" applications must call home once a month.
    That is how the application "knows" it is being paid for and is legit.
    While within the call home periodicity connectivity is not required for usage of the application.
    As with a "full" license you'll need connectivity to download/install application updates
    Be well...
