HD - best capture and edit for NTSC Sd output?

I shoot in HD but need to output for community TV channel in Standard NTSC. What shoud my capture and sequence settings be for optimum picture quality for playback?

Two suggestions.
When I did shows on the local community tv, they had pretty rigid specs I needed to conform to. So check with whomever you are producing for, the station will give you what they need.
For my local community tv, it was 29.97 frame rate bitrate 6000-8000 720x480 mpeg2. Audio was 2 ch stereo bit rate of either 192 or 256, 44.1 or 48 khz.
So I would export in prores and use something like Compressor to change.

  • Best Capture and Sequence settings for project ending up as digital file

    Hi. Looking for capture/setting advice.
I am used to working in broadcast NTSC 10-bit uncompressed video, but I now have a project which needs to end up as MPEG-1 files. The tapes I have were recorded NTSC 4:3. Should I capture the footage in DV instead of Uncompressed 10-bit, and set my sequence frame size as DV? Will this avoid the reshaping of the image when I output to an MPEG1, or will I lose quality?
    Thanks for the knowledge.

The tapes were recorded on DVCAM 4:3, but we have an
    analogue capture board (AJA IO).
Then for best quality you should be capturing via FireWire as DV (its native format) and then editing in an uncompressed sequence.
This issue came up after I had captured and edited in
the 10-bit uncompressed (space is not an issue), then
was called upon to export stills of the footage,
which, of course, came out in the 720 x 486 format,
much to the consternation of the person who had to
use the stills. This person didn't understand how
the MPEG1 files could come out square, but the stills
came out in 720 x486. So it made me wonder whether I
shoudn't be editing in DV or some other "square"
    format to begin with.
DV (DVCam) isn't a square pixel format. It's the same as what you've got except it's missing a measly six usually-blank lines at the top. You just have to make sure it doesn't get stretched into the 486 lines.
For your graphics person: all they have to do is stretch them to 10% narrower or 11% taller when they place them. That's all.

  • What for a live event capture and edition ?

    Hi there,
What software is best for a live event capture and edition ? (for an instant public feedback) a one with the ability to be controlled by a 2-octave midi keyboard.
Can FCP do that ? even partly ?
The idea is to be able to do the same then tv shows (live cuts and effect layers)
    thanks,
    Ionel

FCP is a professional non-linear editing application ... not a live event playback device.
If you need a very fast turnaround editing facility you can look at FCP coupled with something like Picture Ready from Gallery, you can download a demo to test
if you're looking at doing a 2 camera live cut/switch then you can consider a dual decklink I/O solution and On-Air 2.0

  • I have a Sony HVR-V1P, can i successfully capture and edit with Final Cut Pro X

I have a Sony HVR-V1P, can i successfully capture and edit with Final Cut Pro X

My HVR-A1U was able to capture just fine.  The only issue I had is that it has mroe frequently than FCP 7 ever did find Timecode breaks and split my clip apart.  I never had breaks before, so while it is possible I had them on this latest tape, I think X is just more picky.  I mean heck, it found three in a one minute timeframe.  My A1U worked with X without me needing to adjsut any settings form how I had it setup for 7.

Looking for a mega simple video capture and edit program. Am overseeing a bunch of small groups where we want each person in the group's story told. Some groups will have Macs, some PCs, some iPads, iphones, etc. So needs to be cross platform.
Really, the simpler, the better. Like targeting 5 year olds

Is there any software anyone recommends - Sorenson?

  • Dvx100 24pa captured and edited at 29.97

    Hi there,
I'm trying to rework an old project where i mistakenly captured and edited 24pa footage from a dvx100b at 29.97.
is it possible to perform a reverse telecine with cinema tools to remove the pulldown from a finished edit on a 29.97 timeline? if so, what settings should i use?
i normally remove pulldown on capture with 24pa footage, and edit in a 23.98 timeline, but this project is from before i knew better, and mistakenly worked in 29.97, and am now suffering from interlacing problems/duplicate frames.
any advice would be appreciated. i am trying to avoid recapturing and re-editing.
thanks for your help in advance

    thanks guys...
these are both possible solutions that i didn't think of.
the situation with this piece is it is one long source clip, chopped down into 100+ short clips, with a lot of precise cuts, but unfortunately no respect for pulldown cadence.
using cinema tools, i have performed reverse telecine which seems to remove the pulldown for clips that have the right timing, and unfortunately, not for those that are off.
i should probally just re-edit, but this is the sort of project you really only want to do once.
i guess i'm hoping for an easy fix, and that probally doesn't exist.
i still have the digitized footage and the sequence (29.97). is it possible to somehow remove the pulldown of the source footage, and rework the timeline accordingly?
    thanks again.

  • Need advice ensuring my 25p is captured and edited properly.

Hi all. New to Final Cut and just got a DVX100BEN (PAL) and want to know what I have to setup to capture and edit 25p with Final Cut.
My train of thought here is that I can just use a standard DV PAL setup as the DVX100b stored 25p in a 50i stream. So my questions are:
    1) Can I just use standard, interlaced DV PAL for capture?
    2) Can I just use standard, interlaced DV PAL for the timeline or do I have to set it up as progressive some how?
    3) When rendering, say to DVD can I just render using Compresser to DVD PAL as normal and all is good?
Also, viewer seems to deinterlace it's display so I was wondering if there is a way to get it to just show the rawm image, as it's already progressive from the DVX?
    Cheers
    Aaron Koolen

Well, noone offered me an answer, no matter where I looked, but after some searching I'm pretty certain that you just use the DV PAL template, keep everything interlaced and render out as DV PAL.
I say this because I found a post somewhere by Graeme Natress that pretty much said this.
So, personally, I'm happy with it. Now if you were wanting to render as a true progressive movie then you'd have to do something to tell your renderer to NOT deinterlace the footage.

  • Live capture and editing?

Hi all, is it in any way possible to use a clip on a timeline while its still being captured? I´m planing to capture a live feed and put together some sort of highlights. Has anybody tried this? Do I need one Mac to capture and another for editing? The incoming signal is SDI.

  • Why don't iMovie support native HDV capture and editing?

i would like to see iMovie HD 6 to support native HDV capture and edit. is it possible?

no, FCE-HD (what an abreviation!) uses the same trick as iM-HD, converting HiDef into AIC....
native HD is really more for the pros... yet! I think, the basic problem to be solved first is -r media, meaning, any HD/blue-ray-DVD-r disks, which make it possible for the average user to store his/her products.... but as far as I follow the discussion, right now the industry is caring more for commercial disks, and that HDMI "problem" (broadcasting can include a copyprotection, so no use of any HD/DVD HiDef recorders...!)... finally, we can record only our selfmade movies... maybe that's a little less joy...
actually, converting finished HDmovies into h264 with a high bitrate and storing that onto hd is the only realistic option........

  • Capturing and editing on my primary drive?

I have two-500GB drives in my new Macpro, and I do not see how I could ever fill up the drive with the OS and applications installed (seems kind of a waste). I have read that it is not recommended to capture and edit video on the drive that contains the os and applications, and it should be done on a secondary drive.
    1. What specifically is the problem with capturing and editing video on the primary drive?
    2. Will partitioning the drive with the OS and applications installed, and capturing to the separate partition make a difference?
    Thank you.

    1. OSX creates a great deal of disk activity. Not only is the disk trying to feed the OS and the application commands, it also hosts the System Cache where RAM overflow goes to live until needed.
Adding the demands of REAL TIME media spooling (read/write) to this really busy disk can overwhelm it - leading to dropped frames etc.
    2. Partitioning does not solve it. It is still one physical disk and subject to all the same demands as spelled out in #1 above. Partitioning may make some sense in organizing material but it will do nothing for system performance. Indeed, there is some evidence it will reduce realtime performance.
If you need more drive space, for fastest performance, get a PCI based esata card and add a series of external sata devices. FW800 drives will work quite well as well - especially for DV, HDV and uncompressed SD.
    good luck.

  • Best Practises and Guidelines for SharePoint 2013 Development

Currently We are using SharePoint 2010 and doing a lot of enhancement and customization in the portal.
we are planning to migrate SharePoint 2013 after 6-9 months.
I want to know what are the best practices and guidelines for development in SharePoint 2010 keeping one thing in mind that customization should be compatible or can easily migrate to SharePoint 2013 so that re-engineering effort would be as minimum
    as possible.
We have every possible piece of customization in SharePoint 2010 portal like web part, event receivers, workflows, master page, page layout, custom search etc.
    Please do the needful.

Best practices don't really apply here. They are generally rules of thumb that you can apply without thinking too much and be pretty much right. Development is by it's nature too varied to allow that sort of best practice guidance.
Having said that the main thing you should be concerned with around the choice of development approach in 2013 is the intended future of your client and the application. If they are making a move to the cloud you should be concentrating on the app model
and rapidly phasing out farm solutions. If they are considering it then you can still consider using the more old-school options of farm solutions and sandboxed solutions. If they can't go to the cloud because of data security etc. then you are more or less
free to use what you like.
Also, try to move to client side processing wherever possible. MS are only going to make server side work less pleasant in future.
Beyond that, get to some conferences and start chewing through some of the blogs on the topic.

I have an acer monitor AL2016W. I managed to get it too work but the screen is too bright. What is the best brightness and contrast for it? I have a resolution of 1850 x 1250, can I safely change that on my mac mini? Thank you for yuor help.

If you are using windows 8 - go to the start screen and just start typing Power.
When you start typing in, "Just Type" kicks in and starts searching for what you are typing, The default is to look for applications, but the power options you need are under settings.
So Click on Settings, and you'll see power options on the left.
Click Power Options and once you get to there, you should see a slider on the bottom of the window to change the brightness, I added a screen shot for you.

  • Looking for best application and stylus for iPad

I am looking to download an application for an ipad to use with a stylus, but don't know which application or stylus is best.  Please share your opinion on the best application and stylus for taking handwritten notes.

Procreate is the only good reason to own an iPad, it has support for the top three stylus. However iOS7 has broken the Bluetooth Bridge that Pogo Connect, Wacom and Jot need to give pressure sensitive support. Procreate hardly works now.. except..you want to finger paint.
But when it is fixed I would suggest buying the Pogo Connect and a set of nibs and if I had only one App to use it with I'd use Procreate. It's vastly superior to many desktop Apps too.
However, Apple relying on third party Stylus support only makes my MS Surface Pro look like where I'll be spending my cash on the next upgrade cycle. Why Apple has not come out with an iPad Pro is a stunning insult.

  • What is best mac and software for home video editing and creation

I am about to buy a mac to capture 30 years of photos, film, and video (multiple formats).
I want to then edit a series of videos to make movies to capture our family history.  I know I will have a lot of conversions to make and will use a local video transfer place to do that.
I am not worried about price.
My goal is to make a series 30 of DVD's each about 1.5 hours in duration.
I have a lot of organizing, editing, publishing and storing to do.  I know it will take me a long time.
I am about to purchase the mac and other things needed.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Dave

I do LOTS what you are about to do.
I think I can confidently say I have tried all software and the vast majority of video converters. Here is how I do it.
    Computer:   Mac Pro
Movie editor:  iMovie 06, (more expensive than iMovie 11 but well worth the price) I have iMovie 11, but I would not use it for making DVDs.
DVD authoring:  iDVD 09 / 11  ( iDVD has not changed in a couple of years, just make sure you're using iDVD 08 or later).
You will also need a A/D coverter. (Like the Grassvalley ADVC300)
I've played around with countless other conversion systems, ranging in price from $79 to $399. Short verison, this is the ONLY unit to own. No dropped frames at all, even with questionable quality tapes, no jitter, great color, excellent sound quality. Zero setup with iMovie 06 and iDVD 09/11.
This is a prosumer deck. The time code function is alone worth the price if you have old analog footage. Absolutely NO "Out Of Sync" audio.
ADVC300 is for anyone who wants to do editing and is concerned about quality of color and speed, for the novice it is an incredible gizmo that will restore VHS tapes to a state close to the original fixing midtones, highlights and shadows on the fly. Not only can you simply convert analog to digital you can actually manipulate the signal going in (if you want to).
A bit pricey but it WORKS.
    http://www.grassvalley.com/products/advc300
The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material.
I also own an Elgato EyeTV,  it's in a drawer somewhere. The ADVC300 gives much better results ESPECIALLY WITH TAPES.
iMovie 06 and iDVD 09 is 100% "lossless" combination and my DVD's look like they came from Hollywood!
