HD Camcorder Help

I am looking to get a new HD Camcorder to record our high school basketball games.  I will be transferring the video into iMovie to possibly edit and then to iDVD to burn a disc.  Can anyone recommend a good High Definition Camcorder that won't break the bank.  Thanks

What do you think about this model?
  http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Canon+-+VIXIA+HF+R300+HD+Flash+Memory+Camcorder+-+Black/4881133.p?id=121...
Things I look for....
forward facing microphones for better audio
no hard drive to maximize battery life, avoid shock issues and keep the cost down.  I use a USB 3.0 card reader to maximize transfer speeds.
rear loading battery if you want put in a bigger battery to get more than 30 minutes of recording time.
Consider a fluid head tripod for less shaky footage as you pan back and forth.  Your content will be much more viewable.
Keep in mind that you want Blu-Ray burning to preserve the HD, otherwise you are tossing out 6x times the data if you are burning to a DVD.

    Hi
    A. MUST be via FireWire - Nothing else will work
    B. To just get material over to a Playable DVD - Then Use iDVD and Magic iDVD or OneStep DVD function
    Else read on
    NO CAMERA or A/D-box
    Cable
    • Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toggle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on <-> off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
    • Camera set in Playback mode - NOT Recording mode
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK e.g. recording and playback to TV)
    A/D-box
    • Is the dip-switches set right ?
    • Set to same standard as recorded/editing e.g. NTSC 29.97fps or PAL 25fps
    • Try resetting it
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    • FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
    External device’s (hard disk’s)
    • Should be FireWire as USB/USB2 performs badly and so does Airport or Net-work connected ones too.
    • MUST BE - Mac OS Extended formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - DO NOT WORK for video due to 4Gb barrier.
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minimum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited. No Camera or A/D-box
    • GarageBands fix - Close iMovie, Open GarageBand, Play some notes, Close GB and iMove can now be OK
    • Does Your Mac have a FireWire Port
    • White MacBooks - don't
    • MacBook-Air - don't
if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way
    else - NO SOLUTION
Only option as I get it is either
    • Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
    • Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
    • If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref. file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    • Screen Saver - OFF
    • Energy Saver - OFF
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie’08 (7.1.?), 09 or 11 ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE   Mac OS Extended   formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpful insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After un-installing Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

Maybe your problems is solved in the meantime, but for all others this might help as I had the same problem, also have the Sony HDR-HC7, but the 7e (Europe, PAL). I found this link today and it works perfectly
    //support.sony-europe.com/tutorials/dime/videotransfer/vtransfer.aspx site=odw_en_GB&sec=DVH&m=HDR-HC7E
What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

  • Novice.  Creating a DVD from camcorder - help please..

    Hi all,
I am tasked with creating a DVD from some of my dads camcorder tapes. Can anyone provide a simple advice list. I assume that iDVD (which i have never used) will be the software to use?
Look forward to hearing from you helpful and intelligent people out there.
    From a complete simpleton.
    Kind regards,
    Alan

    Hello, Alan,
First, you need to determine if these tapes are digital or not. If they are not digital, you will need to convert them into a digital media format that your version of iMovie can accept. (For example, iMovie 6 can accept only DV footage).
Does your dad have the camcorder that he used to record the tapes? If his tapes are not digital, you can connect his camcorder to a digital camcorder and record each tape to digital miniDV tape. I think it is easier to use iMovie 6 for your movie-making, especially if you are thinking about editing this footage, cropping out bad parts, adding titles, effects and/or audio clips. That is why I am recommending recording to miniDV tapes.
Having the original footage on miniDV digital tapes is also a good way to store the originals, takes up very little space.
If his tapes are some other format, post back for info regarding how to proceed,
What version of iMovie do you have? I am assuming that you have iMovie08 since you are posting in iDVD08. As stated, I recommend that you do this project in iMovie 6. If you don't have it on your computer, you can download it here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imovieHD6.html
And, I recommend viewing this tutorial: http://www.apple.com/support/imovie/tutorial/
Once you have the footage on the miniDV tapes, you can connect your digital camcorder to your computer's Firewire port, open a new iMovie project and import the footage. You should limit each iMovie to about an hour and a half, if possible. A single-layer DVD can hold about 2 hours of content maximum. It doesn't matter what the size of the iMovie is in GB, only its length matters for iDVD.
After you import the footage you want, you can edit the clips and place them on iMovie's timeline in the order you wish. You can choose to add titles, transitions, effects and audio. iMovie has one video and two audio tracks so you can easily see what you are doing. If you want to have different chapters(scenes), you mark them in iMovie. Another advantage of iMovie 6 over iMovie 8 is that you can put chapter markers where you want them, not just at specified intervals.
After your movie is finished, close iMovie.
Open iDVD, create a new project in which to place your movie.
You should do this tutorial before you begin to work in iDVD:
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/#idvd-create-63
Once you get your first iDVD project ready to burn, do a 'save as disk image' and then burn the actual DVD from the disk image using Disk Utility. You will need to use a good brand of DVD-R disks, such as Verbatim or Maxell. Memorex has been problematic for many, and don't use a cheap store brand. Select a slow burn speed, 4x or less.
    That's a brief summary.....
Post back if you need further information! Good luck with your task!

  • Camcorder Help Needed

Hi, thanks for reading this. I have a Macbook with iMovie 09 and am about to purchase a camcorder. I have read the list of camcorders supported by apple but because I am clueless technologically I would love input on the best camcorder to get for what we need. I have read some older threads but they do not completely answer my questions. Our primary restriction is price as we are hoping to spend under 350 if possible. Our main goal for the camcorder is shooting home movies and other basic footage as we are expecting a baby soon. If someone has a suggestion on a camcorder that shoots relatively good quality footage, has decent memory capability, and works well with iMovie 09 I would really appreciate it. We are not video experts who need the very best...just some advice on what would be the best option for our needs. Thank you so much for your help in advance!

your budget is tough. You really should stay away from DV material unless you want to preprocess it. That means you are into an HD camera. imovie works best with progressive. The canon AVCHD that shoots 30p will give you the best quality, but not in your budget. Maybe look for inexpensive webbie type camera such as the flip or sonys webbie. Sanyo also is about to release a new set of cameras that will also shoot iframe...a new spec fully supported and developed by apple/imovie.
It will be more expensive than the flip, but not too much over your budget.

  • Camcorder help before purchase

    Hello all,
The help provided in this forum is outstanding and I'm hoping to make a quick request of your time.
I was thinking of buying a Canon Vixia HF M31 for small projects like, home movies, kids playing at the park, birthday parties,Disney vaca. I have Premiere and AE CS4 version 4.1. Does anyone have any experience in using this type of camera with the software I just mentioned. I'm running W7-64bit, AMD Tri-Core, 6GB memory, 1 TB and 320 GB hdd. I've used premiere with my old panasonic which used Mini DV cassette and the rendering was not all that bad. I would like to burn my HD movies into a dvd if possible. I have a blue ray player for playback. My biggest concern is the rendering and the time it takes to complete a 30min - 1hr video project in premiere. If anyone has any recommendation for a camcorder within $500, please do so, as I don't know what else to look at.
I appreciate all the help anyone can provide as I have to make a decision on buying a camera in the coming days.
    Thank you,
    Mary

I am not familiar with that camera... exactly what codec/format does it create?
    >burn my HD movies into a dvd if possible
You may not DIRECTLY do this with Encore... but you may have Encore create the BluRay folder structure on your hard drive and, as long as the file size will fit on a DVD, you may use Imgburn to write the folder to a DVD
This will work in a BluRay player as HiDef... albeit for a very limited time
For a "full length" movie, you need an actual BluRay burner
    >AMD Tri-Core
That may be a bit of a struggle, since the AMD chip does not have the SSE4 (I think is the name) instruction set, which makes editing HD video easier
If that camera produces AVCHD, you really need a Quad-Core Intel... an Intel i7 950 is the current price-to-performance choice
    >Premiere and AE CS4 version 4.1
I believe there is an update (to 4.2.1 ???) which fixes/improves several things... go to the update page and check

So I just got this new Sony HDR-CX12 camcorder. It uses a memory stick for storage. So the last couple of times I hooked it up to iMovie it worked great but, yesterday i hooked it up and iMovie didn't reconize it as a camcorder. I've reinstalled iMovie, I've used a different memory stick, i even hooked it up to a different computer and it still didn't work. I'm at a loss of what to do. Please help.

  • Camcorder Help Please

Over the past few months I have graduated from Windows Movie Maker, to FCE to FCP Studio 2. As an edge of desk job I make DVDs for my employer. These have gone down so well that he paid for me to upgrade to FCP. Adding a bit of basic Motion etc to the DVDs has convinced him to pay to upgrade my camcorder. I currently use a Panasonic NV-GS75.
I have been given a budget of £1000 ($1800). I've search the forums and read the threads but am no wiser! Should I move to HDV? Any suggestions gratefully received.

  • Camcorder Help

I don't know if this is the right place to post this but I need some advice. I want to purchase a DVD camcorder but am afraid to buy something that is not compatible with imovie. Any suggestions???

Hi Jonathan - welcome to the forum!
Whatever you do do NOT buy a DVD camcorder - their recording medium (MPEG) is NOT compatible with iMovie. Converting your source material to DV (iMovie's native format) is a real hassle. Buy a mini DV camcorder.
There are numerous topics on this forum where frustrated owners of DVD cameras are asking for ways of importing their material into iMovie - the process is complicated and not worth the trouble. Don't believe the sales hype that surrounds these DVD vidcams!

  • Need Urgent Camcorder Help!?

I want to buy a camcorder but I'm not sure which of these Mini-DV Camcorders it should be. Either the Sony Mini-DV DCRHC24E or the Sony Mini-Dv DCRHC35E. I asked on another discussion board a while about this, and someone replied saying something about the "35E" being better because it had DV in and DV out, whereas the "24E" only has DV out. How important is this and what is this DV IN/OUT used for?
P.S. I have never used a camcorder before.

    Hi,
I'm certainly no expert (I bought a very early MiniDV camcorder 6 years ago and have only used it with iMovie via Firewire). According to this article iMovie only accepts direct input via Firewire and not USB so the presence of DV-out on the camcorder is essential for ease-of-use.
Assuming the camcorder has USB mass storage implemented you can drag and drop mpg files from the device and import them in to iMovie manually (I do do this with video clips from my stills camera) but it is hit-and-miss.
I can't really advise on camcorders but between those two compared: Sony Camcorders the £179 (24E) one looks like a better option (cheaper and has image stabilisation) after all the 35E gives DV-in but with hard disks being so big and DVD-Rs being so cheap this feature is less likely to be used nowadays.
    --- Off Topic ---
I really enjoyed the photos on your site - AK has never been on my wish-list of places to visit before but it certainly is now!

  • Premiere Pro CS3 camcorder help

I've been searching forums and support but can't find where a list of "Supported Camcorders" for Premiere Pro CS3 are. The closest i got was an answer to someone elses similar question which said to search the Knowledge base, (I didn't find crap in there) and the same person said to call "Tech Support"
(i actually need a code or product number).
I simply want to know which cameras will work with CS3!!!!  I know the Sondy PD150 and 170 work but they're too expensive. Any help before I purchase one that won't work??????????????????
    Thank you in advance.

Jamie, if you're using CS3 or earlier, you can't capture it. Plain and simple, CS3 doesn't recognize it. Adobe has upgraded CS4 and it captures AVCHD video just fine. I looked up and saw that your camera utilizes AVCHD video technology.
    Here's some suggestions:
1.You can try capturing it using another method (windows movie maker) and then importing it into CS3 but I'm not sure if that will work.
2.You can search a "video converter" online and download one that will convert your AVCHD video to a usable format (.mpg,.avi or other usable format) I have done this at home but have never found one that is free. Others have told me you can get a free one online.
3.Return your camera and get one that will work with your version of Premiere Pro CS3.
    4. Purchase Premiere Pro CS4
    5. I don't know what capabilities you or the camera has but some cameras can directly burn onto a DVD, if yours can and you have the capability of using a DVD player to capture video into PPCS3 then you can also try it that way.
I have captured video so many different ways that I'm amazed sometimes at how I've done it.
Sorry, doesn't seem to be a "quick" fix. And I hope this helped a little.

  • New camcorder help

I am planning on switching to Mac for the ease of use of the imovie software...I want to get a camcorder that will work with imovie straight out of the box (i am pretty computer deficient). I just want to shoot movies of the kids and do some minor editing, nothing too fancy... I am willing to spend up to $700...any suggestions?
I asked this question a few days ago and got a great answer but with the release of the new imovie I was wondering if hard drive camcorders will now work easily with the imovie or if i should still stick with tape based ones...

When you're working with video on a computer its always a storage intensive situation, especially if you're using HD.
You would do well to get any of the Hard Drive bassed camcorders. With tape drive you have to switch tapes constantly, and you get 60-120 minuts per tape.
My Sony HDR-SR1 gets something like 35 hours of video at the same quality as DV camcorders -- that's like 35 tapes you don't have to carry around.... plus the newer camcorders use better compression and so you have less storage requirements.
DV and HDV are based on a fixed data rate and thus are inefficient compared to modern formats (they're also almost 10 years old) However they have the best support.
So if you want zero hassles, get a DV or HDV camcorder, but if you want to be able to shoot for days without changing tapes or dumping to the computer get a hard drive camcorder.
Most should work just fine with iMovie 8. (Though the software has only been out a day so there are some initial incompatibilities... but these should be fixed quickly.)

  • Please Help:(,Unable to capture from camcorder using Audigy 2 ZS Video Edi

Hi there! Well I have been trying to use the Sound Blaster Audigy 2 zs video editor to transfer Hi8 tapes from my camcorder (Samsung SLC860) to my laptop (Compaq presario, AMD Athlon 64 3200+, .25 GB RAM, xp). I have successfully done this before *sort of*. Before i was able to capture video from my camcorder without the sound. But now I cant even capture video! I get an error when using Ulead VideoStudio 8 SE reading: 5065:29:0. Please help, anything would be great! Thank you! Oh, i've tried reinstalling the drivers already, didnt work. P.S. I connect the camcorder to the Creative Audigy using S-Video. I have also tried A/V out from the camcorder to video-in on the Audigy. I have also downloaded VidCap and other driver updates from Creative but those didn't work either. I've tried VidCap other capture programs, none worked. Any help would be great. Thank you!

Hi there! Thanks for the reply, unfortunately, I've tried VidCap and it wont let me capture either. The Start button on Step 3 isn't acti've. Its not bold, and when i click on it nothing happens. But under device manager and Sound, Video and game controllers, there are alot of things. They are as followed: Audio Codecs, Legacy Audio Drivers, Legacy Video Capture Drivers, Media Control Devices, Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Video Editor Audio Device, Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Video Editor Video Device, SoundMAX Intergrated Digital Audio, Video Codecs. Do you think any of these could be interfering with one another? If so, which ones can be safely disabled? I've also tried downloading all the necessary updates for VidCap and I've even tried reinstalling the Audigy card many times. I am able to see the preview of the video on both programs VidCap and VideoStudio but I just can't capture. Once again, the error message on VideoStudio is: 5065:29:0. Thank you so much, hopefully I hear from ya soon and this can be fixed.

  • HT3775 BDMV" can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer.  How do I solve this?? Am I losing all the video files I have in my camcorder??? Please help me!!! Thanks

I am downloading the memory card from my camcorder into my MacBook Pro with Retina display. It usually popped to the file called AVCHD then CLIP to show all the videos. But not this time, it automatically changed to BDMV. I do not have idea how this happened while I left my notebook on and I was away for a couple of hours then back to the living room to work on each video as to type name of file etc.
Now, I cannot even open them into CLIP because I am still getting BDMV with a popped sign that said BDMV can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer. (I do not even understand what this is supposed to mean??) also with the bottom message that stated "Quicktime Player created this file yesterday at 1:52pm"  I am like uhhh how can QT player do this without my authorization??
Please help me how to solve these and get all of my videos back that I saved in my camcorder.  Let you know that I tried to insert the memory card back into my camcorder and all these videos are gone.   Now I am having a HUGE headache because of this!!
    What should I do now???

    HI,
Did you ever figure out how to get them back? The same thing happened to me yesterday. I was able to open the file in VLC media player (you can download this app), but the file had been corrupted. It was only the last clip I had recorded, all the others were lost. Even the clip that will play is messed up

  • Help on purchasing a dvd camcorder to work with imovie

hello out there...was wondering which camcorder that has a dvd burner works best with imovie and osx...i want a sony, but i thought the small dvd's did not work on osx. presently, i have a digital8 and use a firewire connection to ingest video for editing with imovie. thanks for any help...

... boxes that holds DVD and hard drive recorders:
These files are intended for "one time" captures.
The file format is not intended for editing.
I totally agree with your recommendation: try to avoid DVD and harddisk camcorders at this point if you plan to edit on a Mac. Not only is software support seriously lacking, those Mini-DVDs don't even work with slot-loading drives that are common on Mac's.
But... there is nothing wrong with the MPEG-2 compression used on DVDs. Just look at HDV: It uses the same MPEG-2 compression to fit the the HD video into the space of a SD MiniDV tape. iMovie converts HDV video streams during capture into a format that is easier for editing - that's why the files on your harddisk are 4 times as big as the data on the tape. The quality of video captured by most consumer camcorders is more limited by the optics and the video sensor (in particular indoors, with less than perfect lighting), than the recording format and media. And yes, you can edit MPEG-2 just fine, it is just more challenging to get it working right.
I used to tell all my friends to stay away from DVD camcorders, too, but then broke down and very reluctantly bought a DVD camcorder recently. It's mainly used for recording music lessons, with instant and repeated replay. It took me some tinkering to work out a good workflow for editing with iMove. I did some side-by-side comparisons with a similarly priced MiniDV camcorder (Canon DC50 vs. Sony TRV-33). Overall, the video clips were almost identical from either camcorder, with the DVD camcorder producing slightly better video in some situations. But as I said in the beginning, that is probably mostly a result of the better video sensor and the optical image stabilization in this particular model.
So how does my workflow go:
    - Use DVD-RWs, formatted in Video-VR mode, and prefinalized. This allows
you to pop out the DVD from the camcorder at any time and immediately
use it in your DVD player or computer without another time-consuming
    finalization step.
    - Find a Windows PC to copy the video files from the DVD to my Mac.
Mac OSX cannot read the filesystem used by Video-VR discs without
additional software like Roxio's Toast (which I don't have). Besides, all
    my Macs are slot loading.
    - Convert the clip with the Quicktime MPEG-2 plugin and MPEG Streamclip
    to DV format.
    - Finally, import the clips into iMovie.
Workable yes, but neither convenient nor esay. Stick with MiniDV.
