HD Camcorder with iMovie/iMac etc....

Finally got an HD 1080p television! Now the question is what about my camcorder. I have a 6 yr old sony Mini DV camcorder with 4x3 picture and of course no HiDef...Is there a camcorder out there that will allow me to take videos on a vacation, get home download into my iMac, and then edit, burn to a DVD and then watch on my new TV in full HD?

Look at HDV (high def tape) camcorders. They will work with iMovie HD or HD6, but you would also need Toast and a Blu ray DVD burner in order to get a HD DVD.
Does your present miniDV allow you to shoot 16:9 and 4:3? I have found the 16:9 SD video from my camcorder plays beautifully on my HD plasma TV after upscaling in my Blu ray player.

i tried to get the installation disc for the camcorder but mac wont' recognize it becaue it is windows based i guess.
i just bought the camcorder a few months ago and when my computer crashed thought i'm finally getting a mac...it's been a costly venture which has resulted in more frustration than before my pc.
now the things i want to use with my mac that i thought would be even simpler...are not even useable...
    help

That camera shoots H.264 in an .avi wrapper.
You will have to transfer the files via the Finder.
Get a free copy of MPEG Streamclip and convert them to QuickTime .mov using the H.264 codec if you are presumably editing in iMovie.
Note that your list of video codecs won't look like mine as I have Final Cut Pro, but H.264 is definitely an option for you.

I would love to hear from someone who has this camcorder.  Is it compatible with iMovie 11? (It is not currently on their list of supported camcorders) .  Is this a good HD camcorder for recording family trips, kids activities, etc.?  Is there a better camcorder out there for $300 or under?

  • Compatability of JVC GZ-MG330 Camcorder with imovie

Does anybody know if the JVC GZ-MG 330 Camcorder will wirk with imovie? The apple camcorder support page claimes that the JVC MG155 is compatable. The 330 is the next generation.

    Hi
I am about to buy either the JVC GZMG-330 or GZMG-335, so I've been following this thread and other similar ones with interest.
One observation - the 330's (red, blue etc.) seem to not be supplied with the Everio Dock. The dock includes a FW / iLink /.... port. This would suggest that the 335 and others including or used with the Everio dock will work with iMovie 8 and iMovie 6/HD.
Of course, I've yet to put this to a definitive test, I am trying to find a shop with a "Safe" returns policy to try this...
Just an observation. There is also this video on the JVC website that implies at least iMovie 8 support...

  • Compatibility of my camcorder with imovie

Hi, I cannot use my camcorder (sony DCR-TRV460 digital 8 with firewire) with imovie. I can control the camera with the imovie window (play, rew, ffw,etc..) but I never see the image. I have final cut express and it work with it. How can I use my camera with imovie, it's not an old camera and I need imovie. Somebody has an idea? The computer is mew for me and I'm a little bit disappointed. My camera is not on the compatibility list for imovie but I'm sure is supposed to work.

  • Can't import from camcorder with iMove '08

I'm no longer able to import my movies from my Sony camcorder. I was able to do so in July so I'm assuming there's a problem with the latest software. The camcorder is connected via USB (it show its connected) but iMovie does not come up with the import prompt it used to, nor can I select from Import (it only shows the built-in camera). I have more then enough space, I've tried multiple USB cables, even disconnected everything else, re-booted, powered down the camcorder--everything. Please help, this is very frustrating!

You don't say which camcorder you're using.
Many Canon camcorders will NOT work properly with anything else, e.g; an external disc, on the FireWire circuit. Sorry. For those, you'd need to import to the internal disc and then copy to the external, and continue editing with the external drive.
"..Could it be my firewire drive is too slow to record the video?.." No: all modern external FW drives are perfectly fast enough, and a 320gb is certainly a modern drive.
"..formatted Mac OS extended (journaled).." ..are you absolutely CERTAIN..? ..It needs to be, otherwise it'll do just as you describe. And even discs bought for Macs or from Mac stores generally come formatted as "PC Exchange", i.e; MS-DOS formatted. Check it again by right-clicking or Ctrl-clicking it and use 'Get Info'. If it really says "Mac OS Extended" you're OK. If not, you'll need to use Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility, select the name of the disc and click the 'Erase' tab (after you've moved off the disc anything which you might want to keep) and then select 'Mac OS Extended'. CAUTION: be sure that you've selected the external drive: don't accidentally reformat and wipe your internal drive!
"..Are there any settings I can adjust or other things to try?.." No. However..
Some camcorders are not properly recognised by iMovie at first. It pays to open a project which already has some footage in it, play that and then attach the camcorder and try importing. Playing back some existing DV footage often - in my experience, anyway - 'kick starts' the program into accepting more footage from the attached device.
But that only works if (a) the drive DEFINITELY is formatted as Mac OS Extended, and (b) you're NOT using a Canon with an external disc..

  • Sony DSC-SR82 HD camcorder with imovie Hd?

It looks like it may not work, from other posts but thought I'd pose the question anyway. And TIA.

Ok folks. I've been doing some research, and it looks like It just isn't going to work. The problem is that neither quicktime or iMovie hd are set up to deal with mpeg-2. Here's an example of what happens when one of these cameras are tried.
    http://www.sparkplug9.com/bizhack/2007/04/22/sony-camcorder-mac-os-x-not-happy-t ogether/
Folks, Moral of the story. Don't be tempted by the supposed cool factor of hd camcorders (especially) sonys. So, you have to buy miniDV tapes, but the quality is so much better and the format is way better if you use a Mac as well.

    Hello Spiceheads!
During recent years the number of Apple-products in our enterprise has increased quite a bit. This comes with a whole lot of issues for us, as they are not nearly as easy to manage centrally or troubleshoot when they finally go wrong (I admit, that is not as often as PCs), let alone deploy to new users! Active Directory support is poor at best - our latest tests with it a few years back gave pretty much worthless results and we never picked it up from there. Our Mac users manage their own machines entirely.
I know Windows 10 and how to deal with it is the new big thing to discuss right now, but what do you guys do with people who insist on bringing their own Macs - or departments that insist on running Macs and just end up paying for it out of their own budget(!) - and then, for instance, want to print, access SMB...

  • Do mino/mimo cameras work with imovie hd?

just wondering if anyone has used one of those flip cameras with imovie hd

Yup, you can certainly use an HDV camcorder with iMovie ..but importing HDV is painfully slow unless you have a very fast Mac. I traded up to a quad G5 because I just couldn't bear the tedious 2x or 4x real-time import sloth..
Once the footage is in iMovie HD, it can be edited as simply as any other footage, though it takes up more filespace than normal DV, and renders take a little longer (..transitions, titles, effects, etc..) as they're being applied to frames with 4x the detail in them!
HOWEVER, burning an HDV movie to Standard Definition discs with iDVD creates - in my opinion - very poor DVDs. The quality drops off, of course, but also looks - to me - worse than ordinary non-hi-def recordings.
HDV on an HDTV is terrific. HD from an HD player into an HDTV should be terrific. I haven't yet used DVD Studio Pro to burn a hi-def DVD, as I haven't yet got an HD burner, so I can't comment on that.
    So, all in all:
    (a) The camcorders give a wonderfully detailed picture.
    (b) The HDTVs ditto.
    (c) iMovie can edit the footage - but the faster the Mac the better.
    (d) iDVD cannot - yet - burn the footage as HD, and its compression from the Apple 'Intermediate Codec' (..used automatically while editing HDV within iMovie..) to Standard Def is (..in my opinion..) extremely unsatisfying, and makes a mockery of using HDV ..although, of course, you (..I..) can shoot now in HDV and burn later in HD when suitable software and hardware arrives.
I hope this isn't too discouraging! HD is the way to go ..but not all the bits are there yet..

i have a new imac with imovie 11 however my everio hd camcorder will only work with imovie 8 or 9. i tried to download imovie 9 but my mac says i don't need the update. How can i download imovie 8 or 9 complete not the update?

I really appreciate all your help. Today I spent some time on the problem. First I purchased  any video converter from the ap store and then I connected the camera to the mac with the original usb cable that came with the camera. I turned on the camera and selected backup on pc and the logo came up on my home page. I opened it and after several attempts i found the 3 video files that were on the camera. I then converted them from a tod file to mp4 and then transfered  them to imovie. Now I have to figure out how to send the video to youtube or move it to an external hard drive which I have not been able to do. So far I am not too fond of imovie 11. If you could send me  the download for imovie 6 I then could try that route. When talking to apple support yesterday about the problem they suggested to get Final Cut Express. It's 200 bucks so before i order the install disc i would like to try your suggestion. My email address is [email protected] Again I thank you very much for your help! George

  • What type of camcorder should I buy?  Which works best with iMovie?

Ok...so from my previous post I have come to the conclusion with some help from my new discussion board friends , that I should ditch my Sony mini DVD, and reinvest in a mini DV camera for ease of use with QT Pro and iMovie....that being said...tell me what YOU ALL use? How easy is it to connect to Mac? Firewire? Editing? iMovie making? Trial and errors? Pro/Cons? Sony? Other brands?

    Hi Karsten et al.
I have a problem that I am desperate for any kind of feedback from. Can you help?
Last week I bought a Sony DCR-SR90 HDD camcorder, thinking it would be simple to pull files from this hard drive camcorder straight into iMovie.
However, there is only a USB connection, and the bundled software is for PCs only. I had to download an MPEG2 program from Apple (£14.99) just to be able to import the files and now it does so, but without sound. Moreover, the quality of the image is awful in the iMovie viewing window.
I have a feeling that this Sony camcorder, though quite new, is not compatible with an Apple Powerbook and/or iMovie. This is disastrous as it cost £850 and I need it for my own wedding in September.
My question is: is it worth taking this machine back to Jessops and getting a Mini-DV camcorder that is definitely compatible with Apple/iMovie, or is there a way to get this funky Sony camcorder to sync/work with a Mac?
Second: if I exchange it for a different camcorder, which one should I get guys???!!! (it's vital that it works with iMovie as I like to make decent edited home movies with music, effects etc).
    Can you help???

  • Help with using a camcorder in iMovie please?

    Hi.
I'm 17, and I'd like to create a video of a family holiday for my Nan & Grandad using their video camera, otherwise they'd have to pay some silly amount to get the content copied onto DVDs.
The camcorder they have is only meant to work with Windows - when you install all the drivers etc. I can't remember the model of it I'm afraid, but it's Panasonic MiniDV camera.
I tried connecting it to my Mac using the supplied cable (camera to USB), but it didn't work. I read somewhere that the camera they've got could work with a Mac if you have a Mini DV to firewire cable.
If I were to buy a Mini DV to Firewire cable, do you think it would work with iMovie '11? I've never used a camcorder with a Mac...
    Cheers

    Yes.
Firewire connection is required for DV cameras. The USB connection will not.

  • How does apple want me to create a DVD to play on my DVD player from iMovie? iDVD did not come with my iMac.

I have created several home movies in imovie and am now ready to burn them to DVDs that family members can play on their DVD players. How am I supposed to do this? iDVD did not come with my imac. How does apple want us to do this? Thanks.

Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac? How do I get it, and how do I install it?
Apple insists that the entire world has access to fast broadband (and are prepared to pay for the considerable bandwidth usage) and wants to distribute home movies to friends and relatives via download (iCloud, YouTube, Facebook, whatever) rather than mailing them a DVD. The fact that in reality not all users do, has so far had no effect on this policy. Some purchasers of new iMacs have reported that if you scream and shout loudly enough down the phone to Apple, they may send you a free copy of iDVD. Stating that they would return their brand new Mac unless they received a copy of iDVD worked for some, but that is now said to have been withdrawn by Apple.
Also, you can complain bitterly via Apple’s Feedback link, perhaps suggesting that Apple could have provided a choice between burning DVDs and distributing home movies by other means. You may feel that Apple should not dictate how you destribute family videos or photos to distant relatives and friends, and should not assume that every user is prepared to pay for the excessive bandwidth usage charged by ISPs for huge downloads from the App Store:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that comes with OS 10.7 Lion (which also omitted iWeb) or that comes with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. As there is no satisfactory substitute for iDVD Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD 7, i.e. iLife version 9 onwards. You should also do this if you plan to buy a new Mac anytime soon, as stocks of iLife that include iDVD will not be available for ever.
However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD. Also, of course, there is Roxio Toast, which is the best software for burning anything but again does not offer the flexibility of iDVD.
It is worth noting that the version of iDVD 7 included with iLife 11 only includes themes from iDVD 5-7. If you want all the older themes you should buy iLife 9, which has the same version of iDVD 7 but with all the themes, and none of the iDVD 7 updaters available from Apple Downloads contain them.
Currently the only certain way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
    https://discussions.apple.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/2-21006826-20751 4/Installer001.jpg
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
    https://discussions.apple.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/2-21006826-20748 0/Pacifist001.jpg
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.
But even though you can still buy iLife 9 or 11 that includes iDVD 7 from Amazon, Apple now make it difficult to install:
When you try to install iDVD you may see a notice come up on the screen stating that the 'Authorisation Licence' had expired on 25 March 2012, because Apple have withdrawn the license to it can no longer be used.
In other words Apple are now so adamant that we don’t use iDVD that they have tried to make it impossible to install.
If you get an invalid certificate message just set your Mac's clock to sometime before early 2011 and run the installer.  After installing iDVD reset the time back to the correct time on your Mac.
You may be to use able to use the installer even without setting back the date.  Just click on the Continue button and it should work as expected, but for some it will not continue unless the date is  set back.
    Additional comments:
Apple has clearly indicated in the newest iMacs, Mac mini and Retina Display MacBook Pro that it plans to phase out optical disc drives as soon as possible across the board, providing an external USB drive as an option for users who need one but which is not universally compatible with all Macs.
Users increasingly have fewer opportunities to use optical drives, as the bulk of third party software is now available as a digital download either directly from the vendor or through Apple's App Store. but not all. Apple also sees digital distribution as the future of music and movies, as exemplified in Apple TV, which has never included an optical drive.
The company has never supported any new HD optical disc formats on its products, including Microsoft's ill fated HD-DVD or Sony's Blu-ray format, despite initially being involved in the Blu-ray standardization process. Instead, Apple has put its resources behind developing increasingly higher definition audio and video formats that it can distribute electronically through its own iTunes Store.
And if you think Microsoft are any better, their latest Windows 8 operating system will not play DVDs, or burn them, unless customers buy an extra upgrade, the company has announced:  http://www.gizmag.com/windows-8-no-dvd-playback/22443/
In other words, computer manufacturers have declared optical media as dead, long before consumers are ready to stop using them, which is fine as long as they offered us a choice, but they won’t even do that. Flexibility and intuitive use of a computer seems to be a thing of the past.
The latest anorexic iMacs do not even include a CD drive (or Firewire)! Proof positive that Apple virtually prohibit the use of optical media - although the newly announced Mac Minis do include a Superdrive.
Yet, they still include iMovie! Heaven alone knows or understands what you are supposed to do with your newly edited masterpiece - except make a low quality version for YouTube?

  • Can you recommend a camcorder that is compatible with iMovie 08?

I looked at the list of compatible video camcorders with iMovie 08, but was wondering if anyone has a strong recommendation for a camcorder that is really working well. I'm ready to buy a new camcorder, but want to really avoid any
issues regarding conflicts with the software, etc...
Thanks for saving me a headache.

I like Canon MUCH better than Sony. Sony is a direct competitor of Apple and as such I think they support Apple with reduced enthusiasm.
Canon makes excellent equipment and their technical support people always seem Macintosh savvy (They were very familiar with iMovie).
