HD constantly spinning down (and up)
I have an Asus F201E installed with arch and laptop-mode-tools.
No matter how I configure laptop mode, the HD is constantly spinning down.
I can be working on something and literally within several seconds hear the HD spin up twice
I don't care about battery life at this point, I'm afraid this will literally kill my HD.

If you do hdparm -B /dev/sdX then what does it tell you the APM is set to? I have never used laptop-mode-tools, so I cannot help you with that specifically. But what happens if you set the Advanced Power Mode specifcally? That is, do something like hdparm -B 254 /dev/sdX. I chose 254 because 255 will completely disable APM, but this feature is not supported by all drives. So typically a value of 254 will achieve the same thing. You might also want to try using something almost as high, but not quite (like 250), as that should still prevent your drive from spinning down.

Drives constantly spinning down and then up again - poor hard drives!
My mac pro seems like it wants to kill my hard drives - I hear it spinning down drives and then within 60 seconds it will spin them up again. This happens over and over again.
I even have tried taking the "put drives to sleep" option off but it still happens.
1) I would LIKE to spin drives down and keep them down unless needed to save energy - can I find out why in the world the system keeps spining them up again?
2) If not, how can I keep them from spinning down at all?
Constant start/stop cycles can't be good for my system.
I've got a total of 4 drives - system drive, 2 drives in raid 1 and then a 4th drive. I have no idea which (one or more) is spinning downYou know, it sometimes helps to be specific.
Drive make, model, even firmware.
Seagate had a bunch of drives last year that would take 90 minutes to wake from sleep that drove people crazy (but seemed to be mostly or more common with iMac).
Hardware Monitor has a warning and probably something in the readme (those things you are suppose to read before installing?).
Stripped down system and minimal extras really does prove to to work better, fewer "side effects" and less trouble.
And when you do have your system installed, backup. Don't use it for anything else. I have had to resort to one of those backups more than I like now with Mac Pro. Put it on a FW400 drive and put it on a shelf.
Testing - make a list of what you add or change. Then let it run for a couple days that way before adding something else.
Zap the PRAM and reset the SMC. Run Apple Hardware Test. Maybe there is a problem - or you have a USB or FW device that interferes. Or driver.
In some ways, I think Vista and XP lets you see and control all the startupitems better. -
USB Hub makes Airport Extreme HDDs constantly spin up and down

I have a new Airport Extreme, (newest model, but not a time capsule). I have discovered that when I plug an external USB HDD into the AE, everything is dandy. But when I use a powered USB hub, the HDDs are constantly spinning up and down. All connected computers are shut down. Nothing is accessing the AE. From my testing it seems to be the powered USB hub that is creating the issue. Has anyone else noticed this? Could it be my hub (Amazon Basics 7 port powered USB hub)? Anyone have any success with a different hub?

What are the external disks you are testing with.. as that is just as important as the hub.
I have not had issues using hub.. but I seldom try it.
Powered hubs of low quality (ie standard cheap end, rebadged made in China junk) can have substantial issues with power leaking.. ie it sources power from its own supply or the AE or the drive..
Let me suggest you test one at a time.
Plug in just one disk.. (will the hub work without the power supply plugged in.. some do).. assuming it is not a self powered drive.. see if it is ok by itself.. test each drive.. with the hub powered and unpowered.. tell us what you get. -
External hard drive spinning down (and up) on it's own

I always make sure in my energy settings i have spin down external drives unchecked, because it's known that spin downs and ups can cause drives to fail sooner. Yet I now find my external drive spinning down whenever it's not in use while I'm sitting at my computer, and i hear it spin up at the most random times, even when i'm not using my computer. sometimes in the middle of the night. This did not happen in tiger.
It's connected by firewire 800. At first I thought it was time machine but others in the macrumors forum claim it isn't that. I almost think its network activity. I'm considering using an applescript to access the drive every 5 or ten minutes automatically yet not do anything just to see if this stops it from spinning it down. I do consider this an annoyance and would hope apple will figure out what it is very soon, before it causes any detriment to the life of my expensive drive.did you ever find a fix for this?

Thunderbolt Drives won't spin down and sleep in Mountain Lion
In Lion when I put my iMac to sleep, the external Thunderbolt Drives would spin down and sleep as well. In Mountain Lion, when I put my iMac to sleep, the external Thunderbolt drives do NOT spin down and sleep. Can anyone confirm or duplicate this issue?
I have the same behavior, however I'm using the TB to FW800 adapter. I have 6 FW800 drives in a chain. All would sleep when MBP was put to sleep under 10.8.5 (ironically fixed after 10.8.4, now broken in 10.9).
Seeing the same issue with native TB drives makes me think it's a problem with TB software in general. -
After updating the os, I tried to shut down, clear and reload my Ipod touch. Here's where I goofed: at the prompt for starting the reload process, I selected "start as new Ipod" on the Ipod, but in Itunes, I selected " back up existing Ipod from computer" or something like that. Now the ipod is constantly shutting down and restarting and no controls can be accessed. All I can do is the "forced shut down" which I have done multiple times and let sit for a half hour off.
Disregard, hooked up to itunes and clicked on summary, selected restore, all is well.

I've an iPhone 3 and it happend for the first time yesterday. I had to shut down my phone for a theatershow, and when I started my phone again after the show, it constantly shut down and then started again... Is there a way to delete something or something? 'cause it's very annoying! Already thanks!
Your contacts should still be on whatever program you sync your iphone to (i.e. Outlook, address book).
The iphone is not a stand alone device. It is designed to be synced with a computer. If you have not been syncing with a compatible program, then you are out of luck. Your contacts are not included in the back-up because it is meant to be synced with your computer.

7.1.1 is certainly compatible with the iPhone 4. Just try a reset first.
Close all open apps by double-tapping the home button, then swiping up and off the screen with the app window (not the smaller icon).
Reset your device: hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until the screen goes black and you see the Apple, then let go. (No data loss) -
Hard drive constantly spinning up and down when asleep
Hi all,
I have a problem with an external USB 2.0 hard drive connected to my Mac mini (late 2012).
When I put the computer to sleep the drive spins up to speed, stops, then immediately starts to spin up again. This goes on and on.
I understand that drives will periodically spin up when asleep for spotlight indexing etc. However this seems like strange behaviour, it just repeats spinning up and down in an endless cycle.
I have had the drive for a while now, as my time machine backup. Interestingly this problem only started after I rearranged my desk when I set up a second monitor. I have a USB 3.0 drive (my scratch disk) that behaves normally.
I have drives set to not sleep in preferences.
I have searched around but can only find posts about people not wanting to wait for drives to spin up when they open finder etc.
What do you think? Could the drive be on its way out? It is a Samsung spinpoint f3 1tb in an Iomega enclosure, for information...

I should have noticed this earlier but it appears the problem is with the mini waking from sleep and thus causing the drives to wake.
When I put the mini top sleep (without the external drives powered on) it constantly wakes and sleeps. The displays dont come back on (untiul you click the mouse or hit a key etc.) but you can hear the internal drive spin up and the sleep light comes on, then goes back to blinking until it wakes again.
I have realised that it must be due to the second monitor that I have connected via the mini display port. It is connected using a mini display port to hdmi cable I bought from play.com. Something to do with the display and thunderbolt is casuing the sleep function to misbehave, I think.
Here is the console log that was created after sleeping the mini, allowing it to go through its weird sleep/wake cycle then fully waking it up again.

Hard drive spins down and have to do a hard reboot
I have an Intel iMac 3.06 (April 2008). Ever since I upgraded to Snow Leopard especially when I am using itunes (9.02) (downloading) the hard drive spins down for no reason at all.The energy settings are fine. The only option I have is to hold the power button down for 5 sec and reboot when it happens. I know this has been an issue with other intel iMacs but when the "fix" for other machines was available it said my machine did not need it. I beg to differ. This is getting very annoying as I am sure it is not doing the hard drive any good having to hard reboot all the time.
I have tried the power management reset which has not resolved the problem.Hi David

1. In the Energy Saver preference try setting Computer sleep: to "Never" and make sure the the box "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" is unchecked.
2. Try resetting the System Management Controller as described in the article below.

Now then if you are still having a problem you might also:
1. Use the Restore Default button on the Energy Saver preference panel and then reselect your sleep settings.
or
2. Go to: Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration and trash the "com.apple.PowerManagement.plist" which also restore's the Energy Saver preference to default, then go back to the Energy Saver preference and reselect your sleep settings.

External drives spin down and up on their own??
Suddenly my external drives are acting very strange.
They go to sleep within 3 minutes??
This happens only a few minutes after the last time I access them.
I do not remember this happening prior to SL.
I did a fresh install a second time on a brand new system drive- and I still get this issue with my externals shutting down and having to spin up.
My FW800 take a long time to spin up and I get the beachball.
What is going on?Perhaps a basic question but is "Sys Pref" - "Energy Saver" - "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep whenever possible" enabled?
Perhaps try Topher's tip in this article (setting no spindown time via Terminal)?

HDD ridiculous parking (spinning down) and clicking issue
I have an original Macbook Pro (Santa Rosa) with upgraded hdd Seagate Momentus 500GB 7200.4 ST9500420AS.
The disk is parking and spinning down in ridiculous moments, it can park itself every two seconds for ten times when I browse the web with a loud "click" and a froze the mac for a second. It helps to use hdapm and set the disk apm to max, but this is not a solution.
This is not the beep+click issue on the unibody Macbook Pros.

One thing to check is that your Seagate is not the model with the G-Force feature, which is Seagate's version of a sudden motion sensor. If your serial number is correct and there is no "G" at the end, then it should not be. If you do have the drive with the G-Force, you may need to disable Apple's built in Sudden Motion Sensor. Another possibility is a problem with the new drive. You can do a comprehensive check of the physical health of the drive with S.M.A.R.T. Utility:

You can download the demo and run it several times for free.
Using these links, you should be able to evaluate the Seagate drive and decide if it is the problem or not.

Xpeiria 4.3 update powers down and restarts phone constantly
Ever since the 4.3 update my Xperia T constantly shuts down and restarts. I've tried changing the power settings, charging it etc but makes no difference. It also drains the battery and makes the phone feel hot. Any advice? It's driving me mad!

I have installed a second hard drive (500GB Western Digital SATA SE16) in my Mac Pro quad-core. The drive spins down regardless of the power management settings (system preferences) and does so even when I’m actively working, but not directly accessing the second drive. It then spins up, with a corresponding time lag of 10-20 seconds and the spinning beach ball, when drive access is necessary. I know from the WD website that there is a setting for a jumper on pins 3 & 4 which will prevent spin down (much like would be required for a RAID setup). Does it make sense to enable that jumper to prevent spin down in this case? Will the system power management settings still function properly with the jumper set? Thanks for any input.

As you already know, constantly spinning up and down is very bad for a hard disk.
The best would be to have it sleeping all the time, but if this is not possible, better leave it spinning constantly then.

I'm not sure about that, but I think it has to do with the constant rewriting of files that Mac OS X uses (causing defragmentation as a side-effect, BTW).
My guess is that this didn't happen to your newly installed system, but now happens because there is much more fragmented free space on your hard drive.
Another explanation is if the OS X behaviour mentioned has been enhanced after 10.3.6 or so?

The default spindown time if you choose "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" in Energy Saver, is 10 minutes of inactivity.
You can use Cocktail or TinkerTool System to modify this 10 minutes delay, or paste this Terminal command:
sudo pmset -a spindown 2
to reduce the required inactivity to 2 minutes
(but again, this is not what you are looking for, as this is worse than leaving it constantly spinning, unless perfect silence is so important to you).
I don't know how to tell Mac OS X to behave like former systems though, and I don't even know if it is possible at all.
Usually someone would like to set a longer spindown delay, like
sudo pmset -a spindown 120
for example.

Airport Drives Constantly Spinning up
I have a USB drive hooked up to my Airport Extreme. The drive spins down when not in use.
I go to my finder and connect to my basestation drive, and the drive spins up. At this point I now have the little "eject" icon sitting next to name of my basestation in the sidebar of my finder window. All is good so far.
If I do not disconnect/eject the drive from computer, the USB drive connected to my basestation will constantly spin up and down every 20-30mins or so. It's like the computer is checking to see if it is there or something. I know this does't happen drives directly connected via USB to my computer. Is there a fix for this?
I'm running 10.8. Airport is running 7.6.1.

What OS is the MBP running?
Can you put drives to sleep with specific setting. Even if you set it to something other than default just to try what happens.
In the end.. the problem is Apple do not provide end users with low level access to the router. The later the airport utility the more stuff they removed.. you do not even have a log. So when these issues crop up it is often users who solve it with info like which firmware has the problem.
I can get you a bit deeper into the system but it won't be easy. You may need to do TCPdumps via managed switch or hub which is pretty much in the field of the expert rather than garden user.. and even if you find the problem there is no reason for apple to provide a solution.
