HD crash - any hope?

Today I noticed my computer was running slower than usual, suspiciously so. I decided to run first the apple hardware test, which showed no problems, then I ran disc utility and repaired permissions, and repaired disk, hoping that would help. On startup it continued to run slowly, and then completely froze up. I restarted the computer only to get a big question mark folder, so I popped in the system disk and checked in disk utility. Disk utility can recognize a drive, but it lists as "media" and detects 0kb on it. Same with Boomerang, Data Rescue 2 and Stellar Pheonix. I really would like to restore this drive, it has so much important stuff on it... I'm actually willing to send it to a service if that's what's needed.
My computer is covered under applecare, does apple actually do any kind of data recovery? If they replace the drive, will they give me the old one? I've only had this computer for about 8 months, it's a surprise to have the drive suddenly crash for no reason.
Anyway if any else has gone through this and has any advice, I could use it.
Thanks,
Ben

Well, unfortunately, hard drives can crash at any time, which is why Apple created Time Machine, to make it easy and transparent to have a backup that is up-to-date to within one hour of any failure. I think it was the most important new feature in Leopard. All you need is an external hard drive that is larger than the data to be backed up.
If Disk Utility does not see the volume or identify the drive properly, the drive is probably broken. You could try selecting the drive in the sidebar, and using the Erase tab to reformat the drive, but that would erase your data.
If it is covered by AppleCare, you need to have Apple (or a certified repair shop) take it apart to replace the hard drive. You should ask the Apple Store about their policy for retaining the broken drive. If they insist on keeping the broken drive, you should ask a local independent Apple-certified repair business if their policy is any different.

  • Crashed before Saving - any hope?

I just recorded an hour of a show and before I was able to publish or save it, VC3 crashed. Is there any hope to recover the recording? It did not ask me or give me any indication of recovery when I restarted the program. I also could not find any temporary files anywhere but I don't know where to look.
    Am I out of luck?
    Thanks in advance.

To recover the document, have you tried Open and Repair?
Also, are you saying that Word doesn't work normally now? In that case, you should try repairing the Office installation; see

  • Computer AND iPod both crashed at the same time, any hope getting my music?

My computer and my iPod both stopped working at the same time! iPod is totally non-responsive and getting sent in for repairs, and computer is the same but they will wipe out my hard drive. Is there any hope at all getting my music back???

If you didn't have your music backed up, the chances are small. Have you checked with your computer repair center as to whether or not they can recover anything off the drive before they have to wipe it?

  • All yesterday's Lightroom changes lost - any hope?

I just opened up Lightroom to finish up a project that I had gotten 95% rated/developed yesterday.  However, none of the changes I made yesterday appear in the files: no ratings, no develop settings, nothing.  I back up my catalogs daily, but hadn't backed up that work after doing it.
I *really* don't want to re-do a days worth of editing and rating.  Is this information saved somewhere?  Any hope?
I'm positive I'm opening the correct catalog, not a previous backup.  Unfortunately, I haven't been writing changes to xmp files, although I'm going to do that in the future.  Bleh
Thanks for any help you can offer!

Ok, one last thought on this and why you might have experienced this issue.
Is it possible you opened a backup catalog, not to check the work you did, but to do the actual work. Then when you opened the latest catalog, of course those changes would show.
Only way of knowing would be to open each of the backups. If there was no crash then the experience is indeed odd and the lesson you will no doubt have learned is to progress slowly and double check backups and perhaps be dilligent with writing out to xmp/DNG.

  • I dropped my ipod 4 into the toilet. I tried turning it on twice, stupidly. Then put it in rice. Is there any hope for my ipod? and if not is there a way to get all 1500 of my photos? Pleaaase help!!!

Hello i dropped my ipod in the toilet (clean water). Once i took it out of the toilet i pressed the home button and within a second it shut off! :( I quickly dried it with a towel and accidently pressed the top button!  D: and put it immediatly into a bag of rice. 3-4 hours passes and i tried to turn it on nothing happened.  I honestly tjougjt it would be dry...stupidly! and now its on the rice and has been in there for an hour since the last time i triwd turnong it on. Is there any hope that my ipod will be okay? and if not could it be repaired? How much is it to repair? One more question what will happen to my photos, is there a way i could atleast get my photos?!? Please please please help!!!!!! please!!!

Hey Posada143, You can still try the rice thing, but do not expect much, as roaminggnome has stated. The rice only works if you do it ASAP and leave the iPod off-- do not attempt use, turn on or charge until it is completely dried out. This is probably academic at this point but remember this for the next time: The drying can take 10 days. You put the uncooked rice and iPod in a sealed bag, change the rice every couple of days. This creates a low humidity environment and draws the moisture out of the iPod, but it takes time. Turn your iPod on to earlier, and you run the risk of shorting out, damaging the components inside. Even if done correctly it can spotty. If you do get the iPod to work (and this may require Resetting, Restoring or attempting to place it in DFU recover mode) the first thing you do is make backups, because you never know how long it will continue to work. As for your pictures, if you can't get your iPod to work, you can try data retrieval companies, however; there is no guaranty it will work and it tends to be very expensive. In the future get in the habit of as making backups, because you just don't know. And invest in and use a water tight case. Hope this helps, Good luck. Cheers.

  • Is there any hope of apple adding a 're-link with media folder'-type function to iTunes?

Is there any hope of apple adding a 're-link with media folder'-type function to iTunes?
I have 1000s of broken links after installing the latest version of iTunes and updating some files in my media folder. The location of my itunes library has not changed, and all the files are there (I know because I've just waited several hours for the files to be updated by my ultra-slow computer) - by my logic, there should be some menu option that simply re-synchronises with the media folder, just like itunes would do with an ipod - it can't be that hard can it? The only way I can restore a link is by clicking every song (I have over 28,000) and locating the file in the folder that iTunes claims to use as its media folder - the new version 10 option of then using this location to restore all broken links doesn't work because it only looks in the specific album file, and after a couple of times this dialog box no longer even comes up, so I couldn't ask it to do this even if I wanted to. At the moment the only option I can see is to completely wipe iTunes and re-load all my music from scratch - using my tired and over-worked computer this will realistically take around 15 hours that I don't have, and my computer will melt in the process. I wish I'd never tried to 'tidy up' my iTunes library...
PLEASE Apple, how hard can it be to have a function that searches for and restores broken links by itself????? I've told you where the music is - just flipping look for it yourself instead of getting me to do it!

You don't have to re-rip, re-import or re-download all your content. You can clear the iTunes library, either by selecting all in the libary and pressing the Delete key, saying "no" when it asks if you want to remove the files themselves, and then use the Add To Library command, selecting the iTunes Media folder (or iTunes Music folder, as applicable to your situation), and that will add back all your content. It shouldn't take more than a few minutes; if it does, something may be amiss with your hard drive or the library file is corrupted (in which case just delete the library file and re-do the Add To Library command).
    Regards.

  • Any hope for an accidental purchase?

i use the shopping cart to make purchases, and i accidentally bought a game i didn't want to buy at the moment. this game was on the list in between the two items i wanted to buy, and i accidentally clicked the button to buy the game. i noticed this just after pressing the button. i attempted to cancel it by clicking the "x" button up at the top in the status window, but that didn't work. is there any hope that i can get rid of the game and get my money back?

  • Any hope for recovering data fr. Micro SD Memory card?

this isn't really a powerbook G4 question, but it does relate to data i've had on there.....
I mistakenly pressed the yes button on my mobile phone when it asked if it could reformat the disk because it couldn't recognize or read the card.
Is there any hope of recovering the data or is it gone forever?
I'm hoping that there's someone out there with a solution.
Thanks to anyone who may be able to help me and if I can't retrieve the data, then I must humbly accept that it's gone and to let it go.....
    Brande

    there's a website flashfixers.com.
They have great products to help one recover everything and anything.
I downloaded the demo version ImageRecall to test it out and see how it would be.
Easy to use. It lets you know how many files were retrieved for each option (data, audio, image) within the drive you choose. It gives you 10 recovered files as a teaser. You need to buy the full version to recover all the files that are okay for recovery.
If you haven't heard about this recovery software, check it out.

  • Any hope for music folders on the ipod Touch?

    Hi All
It is getting VERY difficult to manage my music on my 32 Gb iPod Touch. I have hundreds of playlists (for example one playlist for every version of a classical piece; on playlist for a pop album, etc. etc.)
Is there any hope for music folders as in iTunes on the Touch?
    ed

Why do you have a playlist for every album? If your tracks are tagged properly, you can just use the album menu on the Touch.
As for when/if there will be folders on the Touch, the only people who know are probably working under non-disclosure agreements. Who knows what will change when version 2.0 of the software comes out next month.
    Best of luck.

  • Any hope for Powermac G4 400 mhz?

I have GB running on a Powermac G4 400 mhz and, not surprisingly, it gives me the "disk too slow" message after more than 3 or 4 tracks. Without investing too much $, is there any hope for upgrading this to a more workable solution for GB, or would I be better off going to a mini w/1.42 Ghz? I'm concerned that the mini might not work that much better.

    I'll offer an opinion...
If you can slip a Mini and an external FireWire drive into your budget, that's the way I would go (If you're willing to turn a screwdriver and shop around online for a few weeks, a nice sized FW drive and enclosure can be purchased separately for a total under $100. For some more money a very nice sized drive can be had)
The weakest link in the Mini is the very slow HD it has. Add the FW drive and you'll have a lot more machine than I use as my recording machine in the studio (800Mc iBook)
Naturally it depends how far/hard you plan to go/push.
Effects and software instruments are very processor intensive. Audio is mostly HD intensive.

  • Any hope for syncing a "LG Dare" (Verizon)

Well as i'm sure many of you have seen the new "3G iPhone Competitor" will be released on verizon this week. any hope for syncing with iCal and or Contacts?
Please don't rip on me for this I just cannot afford a plan on ATT.

This is great... I got my music on my dare even under the "My Music" Folder on the phone using the method above (Bluetooth Exchange)....
    one problem...
theres no way to get it off after you do that.... if you try to delete songs off your phone via Bluetooth Exchange it says "Last Operation Failed Bad Request..."
and of course theres no way to delete them from the phone... that would be too simple (thanks LG)
and since I have a mac....
i cant use the verizon sync program to get them off...
so for now i only have 4 songs on my Dare... but they are on my internal memory... perhaps... eternally.
Please reply if you have any advice...
    maybe i missed something ...

  • Is there any hope for a water damaged ipad mini?

I accidentally spilled some water over my ipad mini. I think the water got into the ipad thru the earphone jack. If spent about two weeks trying to dry it out.
The excess  moisture that was inside the screen has disappeared (after head and rice and all that sort of thing) but it will not switch on.
If I connect to the power, I can hear the audible beep that happens when you plug it in. If I leave it for a while, I can randomly hear Siri saying something like 'Siri cannot operate'(not too sure - I've always been too far away) and 'please connect to Internet'
This makes me feel there is something there but, I still can not turn it on.
    Any help? Any hope?
    Noreen

    there may not be unfortunately.
The water itself doesn't damage the device, but the short circuits the water causes does the damage. Anecdotally, people have reported success drying their device out, but usually the key is to rice it and leave it until it's totally dry. And avoid any power that may cause those short circuits. Since you've turned it on and such what damage there was to do is probably already done.
Just guessing, from what you;'re saying, the wifi part and the backlight/screen light seems to be damaged even though part of the operating system works (since siri can tell you she needs the internet)
You may be to the point of hoping Apple can grant you an out of warranty replacement (they don't have to when it's user damage) or looking for a new device.

  • Is there any hope for a Nano 6th gen that went through the washing machine?

Is there any hope for a Nano 6th Gen that went through the washing machine?  All of the devices contents are showing up in iTunes when connected but the device itself is not working.

    Hello kpratta,
There is some hope. I have heard of someone putting the ipod in a bag of dry rice and putting the bag in a dark place for a 4-5 days. After that they used this:
    www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
This has the best chance. The rice absorbs any liquid in the ipod.
    Hope this helps.

  • Any hope for a liquified macbook?

Water was spilled on my Macbook last night. Once it had a few hours to dry, I powered it on. Sadly, when I got to the main log-in screen, everything was frozen... from the mouse to the keyboard. Any hope for this Macbook?

    Hi
With any liquid damage you run the risk of corroding internal components. Depending on where the spillage was and which direction the liquid 'ran' there's the potential of 'shorting' the smaller yet crucial components. Your next problem is the cost or repair. If the the MacBook is still under warranty it won't be covered for accidental or willful damage. Additionally the price of the replacement part is at least one/third more expensive than the cost of an exchange part. Apple keep the prices down on components that fail using an exchange system. If there's damage to the component for whatever reason the part would be replaced with a completely new part.
I would pursue an insurance claim if I was you. Most standard house insurance policies will cover individual items up to a certain price.

  • Any hope for a 5c retrieved from water immediately?

Is there any hope for a iPhone 5c that was dropped in the water?  Put it in rice for 18 hours and it started up.  Shut it down and tried a little later and NOTHING.

Overnight may be enough if it was a splash of water (ie: you left the phone near a sink while washing dishes, forgot to dry your hands before touching it, and some water got in the dock connector/headphone jack), but if it was fully submerged and was powered on at the time, odds are it's been damaged already. It may power on and seem fine after a week, but it's very likely you will need to replace it much sooner than you'd expected.
Apple will replace it for a fee ($269 is the cost listed here for Out-of-Warranty service).
