HD doesnt show through Airport extreme automatically

Hi,
For some reason my Maxtor external HD doesnt automatically show as being connected to my computer. For it to work I have to double click on my "shared" base station and click on the HD. But this is not very helpful considering each time i turn on my computer each day I have to do this to ensure my backups are able to mount the HD to backup. I want it to automatically show.
Can anyone please recommend a solution.
Thanks

I now about this new Airport Extreme but I had the same configuration for the last 3 years whitout any problems. Maybe there is a issue with the wifi in Yosemite because the problem started after the upgrade. It could be?

May iMac (OS 10.7.4) has suddenly stopped printing to my Epson CX4800 printer through Airport Extreme, though my MacBook (OS 10.5.8) continues to function just fine). The iMac will print if it is connected to the printer directly via USB. The iMac continues to connect to the Internet wirelessly. I've tried resetting the printer and ensuring the driver is up to date, but no joy.
    Any suggestions?

  • Configuring wired desktop through airport extreme

I have successfully connected a cable modem to the airport extreme and to my wireless mac. However, i need to connect my roommate's dell desktop to the internet and i hoped to do it through airport extreme. My problem is that i cannot get her computer to recognize that it is plugged into the LAN (<-->) port of my airport.
Can anyone help me with a step by step of what i need to do on her computer? (I've tried the network settings, but i cannot figure it out.)
She has a Windows XP computer. We're connected through Comcast and have a comcast username and password.
Also, i want to use security but if i set up a WPA password will she be able to connect? Thanks.

Vinita, Welcome to the discussion area!
Sorry, but I know very little about how to configure XP. Essentially you want to configure it to use Ethernet and DHCP to get an IP address.
You want to ensure that your AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) is configured to distribute IP addresses.
WPA and WEP only affect wireless connections and have nothing to do with Ethernet connections.

How can I mirror my Macbook Pro desktop through Airport Extreme to a digital projector with only a DVI & VGA inputs?? Want to use it for presantation like Keynote/ Pages.

Never mind, I solved it.  Didn't know the converter needed a power source to operate (duh!)  Now I have that, it works just fine.......

  • Internet connection is through airport extreme is not connected

internet connection through airport extreme is not connected maybe there is a problem setting it up

Is it possible that using a Netgear Router connected
to the AE (which is also a router if I understand
correctly) could cause connection problems ?
    Yes.
Ensure that that the AEBS is configured to not distribute IP addresses.
Also ensure that the AEBS is on a different channel to the DG834G.

I can connect to internet with my MBP through Airport Extreme, but my iOS devices can't. Please help.

GerleMan, Welcome to the discussion area!
    There are two probably causes:
Your ISP is blocking the port used by Entourage to send mail and the ISP used by the other wireless networks is not.
    OR
Your ISP doesn't like OS X's default MTU seting of 1500. If this were the case it should also affect any large file transfers you try to make from your Mac to the Internet.

  • External HDD not showing up in finder through airport extreme

I have a 2011 Airport Extreme that I'm attatching an external HDD via USB that's been formatted with a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partition.
I can see my drive in the AirPort Utility under Disks > Disks, I've enabled File Sharing, but I can't see it in the finder.
    Any Ideas?
    Thanks!

The USB port on the AirPort Exreme is under powered. For that reason, you almost always have to use a powered USB hub with an attached hard drive....even if the hard drive has its own power supply.
Be sure to restart your entire network after you install the powered USB hub so that the disk will be recognized.

  • Having trouble setting up file sharing through Airport Extreme

Hi, I am trying to set up file sharing on my USB hard drive through the Airport Extreme, on my HP laptop with Windows XP. I went through the steps in manual setup in Airport Utilities, and my hard drive shows up under the Disk Utility in the Airport Utilities, but the problem is that I cannot figure out a way to find the hard drive from Windows XP. Should it show up in My Computer? I've spent a few hours trying to figure it out and I am close to giving up. If anyone can help me solve this problem, I'd really appreciate it!!!

I have this issue, too. Did you find a solution since you first posted?

  • Connect to broadband wireless, but not through Airport Extreme b/g

I have had an Airport Extreme BS working as a Gateway to my Wireless Broadband service since last July. The AEBS has been providing internet to a WinXP laptop, and an iMac running OSX 10.5.2. This has been working well since installed.
My Wireless Broadband is provided by Rogers and known as 'portable internet'. The Modem/antenna is the Motorola 'Expedience' device for outside perm installation.
Suddenly about 2 weeks ago, perhaps 3, we started experiencing problems. We would have fine performance for chunks of time, interrupted by complete internet connectivity loss. I would go through all the motions of reset on AEBS, on the service provider 'modem' and on the clients. Sometimes we got it back, mostly not.
I found that it looked like the DHCP setup on the AEBS wasn't reliable, in that the AEBS would sometimes get an address from the service provider, and sometimes not. This would then cause a failure of gateway and dns provision to the clients.. so everthing would fall apart.
Plugging a client directly into the service provider ALWAYS succeeded in getting an IP and DNS address. I've spent about 12 hours total on the phone to Rogers at this point, and from their side, working through detailed tests with me, say that they are reliebaly connecting to me, and reliably seeing me get ip/dns.
This leads me to believe that my AEBS has somehow been effected by an update, and now is having troubles handling the role of internal (private-side) dns and dhcp provider, or possibly that it's internal routing from private to public sides is somewhat in fault.
I didn't keep any records, but this would correlate with a number of updates i ran on the Airport utilities, and possibly with an OSX update i received automatically.
Airport Extreme BS version 5.7 ( 802.11b/g.. flying saucer )
Airport Utility version (Mac): 5.3 (530.22)
Airport utility version (Win): 5.3 (no build)
    Mac OSX 10.5.2
    1. Can anyone confirm similar issues?
    2. IS Apple aware of an issue ( i've heard from some Apple store employees that there seems to be a buzz )?
    3. Is this related to TimeCapsule release?
Does Apple listen to these forums, and if so, perhaps it's time to give us an update eh? A little bit of collaboration to save us all this massive headache would be appreciated. Just ask and i'll give you all the information i can dump.
Gotta hit post while i still have a connection.

    Thank you Bob
I have taken your advice and reverted to DHCP from the AEXP do the address assignment to both Expresses, and I have taken great care with the WDS setup, but still it doesn't work.
Looking at the logs on the WDS main, this is what I see (the station referred to being the WDS remote):
    May 10 19:49:34          Severity:5          Deauthorizing station 00:11:24:01:15:97 [2]
    May 10 19:49:54          Severity:5          Deauthenticated with station 00:11:24:01:15:97 (4-way timeout)
(This is even with a solid green on both Expresses.)
HOWEVER: I have just tried rebooting both of them - main followed by remote - and now they seem to have realised what they're supposed to be doing and both have IP addresses.   This is on my desk.  The next step is to see whether I can get an IP address on a device attached by wire.
They do say patience is a virtue.  I can testify to that being true with WDS!

  • Hard Drive not showing in Airport Extreme

i am using windows 7 ultimate 64 bit operating system
I have the hard drive showing in the Airport Utility but can't access the files
Now i have tried all of this from the apple website with no luck, am i missing something here i have read that it only supports fat32 operating systems which the hard drive is but struggling to connect to it.
    Any advice is appreciated
    Automatically mounting hard disks
From the main window of AirPort Disk Utility enable "Show AirPort Disks in the menu bar".
Enter the username and password required to access the AirPort Disk(s).
Manually mounting hard disks using the AirPort Disk menu bar item
Click the AirPort Disk menu bar icon () and select the Base Station with desired USB hard drive.
Select the desired hard disk(s) (AirPort Disk).
Enter the username and password required to access the AirPort Disk(s).
Manually mounting Mac OS Extended (HFS+) volumes
From the Finder's Go menu choose Connect to Server.
Enter the AirPort Extreme Base Station's LAN IP address (by default 10.0.1.1).
Enter the username and password required to access the AirPort Disk(s).
Select the desired AirPort Disk(s) from the available Volumes.
    Manually mounting FAT16/FAT32 volumes
From the Finder's Go menu choose Connect to Server.
Enter the AirPort Extreme Base Station's LAN IP address preceded by smb:// (for example, smb://10.0.1.1 )
Enter the username and password required to access the AirPort Disk(s). Leave the Workgroup field empty unless you have assigned one in AirPort Utility.
Select the desired AirPort Disk from the available CIFS (Common Internet File System) volumes

You can usually enter anything you want for the user name, but the password will need to be the device password for the AirPort Extreme....(not the wireless network password).

  • Computer unable to establish two-way communication to J4580 through Airport Extreme

I have my J4580 connected to an Airport Extreme base station via usb.  I've installed the printer software on my HP laptop (Vista) and Bonjour recognizes the printer as networked & installed, but when I try to print, i receive an error message "Computer is unable to establish two-way communication with the device" and the printer queue shows an error.  I've attempted to find a solution through the posts, but haven't seen much that seems to apply to J4580.  Any help???  Thanks!

I came across this similar problem and spent days trying to figure it out. I knew I was close when I tried to start the HPZ12
service and it kept failing with "unable to find the specified file". I traced it with a process monitor and found that it was looking
for a registry key that was not present. Specifically:
    HKLM\System\CurrentCosntrolSet\Services\Pml Driver HPZ12\Parameters
It was looking for the string:
ServiceDLL which should be set to:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\HPZipm12.dll (or something similar)
The unfortunate thing is that no matter how many times you install and uninstall the HP drivers, then don't reset the registry keys
for the HPZ12 service. In the end, I ended up doing the following:
    1. Uninstall software and reboot
    2. Go through registry editor and delete the PML key (just did a search for all PML occurences)
    3. Deleted the c:\program files\Hewlett-Packard directory
    4. Deleted the c:\program files\HP directory
    5. Deleted the c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\ contents (anything that referred to an HP printer or driver)
    6. Deleted the HKLM\Software\Hewlett-Packard registry key
    7. Rebooted
    8. Reinstalled and everything worked.
I suggest you backup any registry keys prior to deleting them in case you make a mistake. You can use the Export feature on
the right-click context menu to save each key you delete, or use some tool to make a backup of your registry prior to making
these changes. Similarly, for the files, I renamed directories or created backups of their contents.
Once I reinstalled, I found that there were TONS of new registry keys added that weren't there before. So the real problem is
with HPs install/uninstall. It doesn't clean up properly and any aborted or failed instalation will leave the drivers in a poor state.

  • AirPort Extreme automatic channel select setting question

    Hello, all -
Just got an AirPort Express that I'm using in bridge mode through a rented Actiontec PK5000 DSL modem/router combo through Qwest. (Broadcast antenna is truned off now on the Actiontec and I'm just using it as a modem.) I have a question about the automatic channel setting on the AirPort. I assumed when you leave it on automatic, the AirPort will scan the area to find the best channel to use (1-11 on 2.4 GHz) and then switch your connection to that on the fly, checking it throughout the day. But it's defaulted to channel 1 on automatic and hasn't changed since I got it. My PK5000 used to switch channels (6 or 11) if there was a better one available. Somehow I get the feeling the AirPort isn't doing that on the fly.
The cool thing about the Actiontec was that it defaulted to the strongest channel, and even mentioned what channel was 2nd strongest. The AirPort seems content to just stay on channel 1 all the time. Can someone tell me if this is normal on the AirPort Extreme. Thanks!

From my experience, I have yet to verify that the AirPort's "Automatic" option periodically scans the local area, and then, resets the channel when it finds too much interference. Instead, it attempts to find a clear channel when first configured and sticks with it ... as you have already ascertained.

  • 2008 Macbook Pro wont print through Airport Extreme

    Hi,
We recently got an airport extreme and have our printer (Epson Stylus NX400) plugged into the USB port. My computer (2009 MacBook Pro running 10.6.8) will print wirelessly fine but hers (early 2008 MacBook Pro running 10.5.8) will not. Plugged in it will print just fine but it is a hastle to unplug the printer from the airport and plug it into her computer any time she wants to print. When she tries to print wirelessly, the print command goes through but then doesn't show up on the print que. The only difference I see between our computers when we print is hers pulls up some information from Epson regarding ink levels when plugged into the printer. Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,

    here is one thread:

Have you guys tried updating to 10.4.6
I believe they addressed some airport issues in the update.
Also you could download the firmware update
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macbookproearly2006firmwareupdate10.html
But I believe that just updates your firmware to work with boot camp and doesn't really do anything else.

  • Extrenal Hard Drive with Raid 1 option won't mount through Airport Extreme

I just purchased the new Airport Extreme and the Iomega UltraMax Desktop Hard drive, 1TB. The hard drive has Raid options. I plugged the hard drive into the back of the Airport Extreme through USB and if I have the hard drive set up to be Mirrored (Raid 1), the hard drive will not show up on my desktop.
I switched the hard drive back to Striped (Raid 0) and it shows up. However, if I open the Airport Utility, the hard drive doesn't show up there. I also can't see the drive by going into the disk utility either so I can format the drive before using it.
Any idea why this doesn't work as Raid 1 through the Airport Extreme and then I'm puzzled with why it doesn't show up in the Airport Utility nor in the Disk Utility.
I want to be able to access this hard drive with a laptop eventually and I also want to make sure that I protect my data by using the Raid 1 option.
Can anyone please help me figure out these issues?

Sure. Forget about the AirDisk and buy one of these:
http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=509 - It's a D-Link DNS-323 2 drive bay SATA NAS box, and shouldn't cost you more than $185 without drives. It has Gigabit Ethernet, supports SMB and AFP (it'll work with Windows machines and Macs), and it even runs an iTunes server inside the box.
    http://preview.tinyurl.com/32vfc3 - Maxtor 500GB drives for $100 each shipped.
So for ~$385, you can have 1TB of space which you can then array as RAID 0 or 1, or use as a big, contiguous drive.

  • Cannot open port through Airport Extreme to access security system DVR

I have internet access through Bellsouth DSL -- modem only. We had a security system set up around a DVR recording images and connected to the internet through a Linksys router. We would use a client on outside computers to connect to the security system dvr and see what was happening (live or recorded). I switched out the Linksys for the Airport Extreme, and now we cannot connect to the DVR.
Do I need to manually open a port to the DVR? How do I do this? The DVR connects to the Airport Extreme via Ethernet, and as far as I can tell, the Airport Extreme connects to the DSL modem via Ethernet using DHCP. We have a static IP address. I thank you in advance for any answers, and I apologize if I'm not giving enough information.

Let's double-check your Port Mapping setup on the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) ...
To setup port mapping on an 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), either connect to the AEBSn's wireless network or temporarily connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to one of the LAN port of the AEBSn, and then use the AirPort Utility, in Manual Setup, to make these settings:
    1. Reserve a DHCP-provided IP address for the host device.
    Internet > DHCP tab
o On the DHCP tab, click the "+" (Add) button to enter DHCP Reservations.
o Description: <enter the desired description of the host device>
o Reserve address by: MAC Address

    o IPv4 Address: 10.0.1.4
    o Click Done.
    2. Setup Port Mapping on the AEBSn.
