HD drive falieur???? SOS

Hi, my MacBook was on, suddenly it froze and I couldn't use the force quit settings so I force-turned it off. Then I haven't been able to start it again: It does turn on but stays on the white screen and it stays on a blinking image of a folder icon with a question mark.
I tryed to reinstall the installation disk (after having tryied the disk ultility) but it doesn't seem to detect my hard disk - when I try to reinstall I cannot choose a destination to install, the field is empty. Does anybody know what is going on and what I can do???

This is why you need to run the Apple Hardware Test, to see if it detects & passes your HD. To do that, locate the original gray disks that came with your Mac & check the printing on them. One will indicate it has the test & tell your how to restart into it. Normally, for late model Intel macs you could just start up holding down the D key & the test would run from the HD, but it is unlikely this will work if the HD isn't being detected.

  • SOS!! PROBLEM WITH  MY  DISK DRIVES. I'M TOTALL CONFUSED

it looks like my last problem was just the tip of the iceberg. To recap: At the time my goal was to rescue files from the two hard drives in my Mac G4, which I was ready to part with, when I learned dhow much repairs would cost. Can't remember how far along I was in the process when I requested help, but eventually was able to transfer the files from both drives to a much larger Seagate external drive. Before disposing of the drives, I figured I had better erase them, as well. Had I known it was going to take 5 days to run 7 passes, I might have had second thoughts, but once it was completed successfully, I decided to do the same for the second drive, which was much smaller.
My current problem started when I connected that drive to my iMac (via a USB to IDE & SATA cable) and brought up the image; then got cold feet, thinking of the possibility I might accidentally erase everything on my iMac.
Before erasing the larger drive I had "colored " the icon orange in order to differentiate it from the drive on the iMac, but got spooked when the new drive also showed up orange this morning. Also thought I remembered seeing a choice of drives to erase the first time, but this time did not see an icon for the iMac. Also could not find it on the desktop, since it was not where I remembered having seen the last time I looked (probably ages ago — buried in the upper right hand corner — usually under a stack of other files).
After much searching, I found an icon elsewhere on the desktop, but with the name I recalled having given to my G4 — not that of the iMac, which I don't think I ever renamed. . . And when I clicked on its desktop, the files looked familiar, but definitely different than the ones I expected to find. . . On the other hand, clicking on the finder's desktop, brought up all the files I expected. The number of files on drive each also was different. The icon's desktop showed 111 documents; the finder's desktop twice that many . . . but the total unused capacity for both was identical.
All I can think of is that I must have messed up when I first got the iMac several years ago and used a crossover cable to transfer files onto it from the G4. I do recall that my intention was to copy only the files I really wanted, but suddenly ended up with everything from the G4's drive. But even if I did, I suspect but am not sure I understand why I ended up with the G4's icon and not just a bunch of files in a folder. . . Also, if the icon was there from Day 1, does that mean I somehow renamed the iMac's icon, or was there ever an icon for the iMac drive in the first place?
Finally, can someone reassure me that if I just go ahead and erase the "orange" drive, I won't destroy any of the files on my iMac desktop today? Since all I could find in the icon was a bunch of old files, I would sort thru them at my leisure and get on with my life today. I

Still trying to follow last suggestion, but am starting to feel like a Mac newbie. I'm relly not, which makes it even more frustrating.
Have been trying since the weekend to start up from my install disk. (Holding "C" key down while rebooting . . . but the Install searched the Startup Disk Folder, bu it only shows System X and Network.disk is not booting; just sitting on the desktop with the option to install). Have also searched the "Startup Disk fodler" but it only shows system X and Network.
Meanwhile, I contacted Seagate Tech support, which was amazingly helpful, considering their internal drive was added to my now deceased Powermac G4 at least 8 years ago. Technician agreed that the memory probably was "clipped" some way, but emailed a links to 2 files that should work on Mac (http://www.seagate.com/staticfiles/support/seatools/SeaToolsDOS217EURO.ISO
User Guide. and http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=201271 . . . suggesting that I burn the first one to a separate disk and boot from that. But since my iMac won't recognize another Mac startup disk, am just a little reluctant to try with one that's "outside the family."
Any chance I could end up making my current problemn worse, rather than better?

  • SOS!! SOS!! HELP ME!!! The mobo won't load/boot windows from the SCSI Drive!!! HELP!!!

Ok so i got the board and the crucial RAM with a new enermax 450W power supply. I am running the 1MB A64 3400+ CG on this board.
I am using the Seagate cheetah 15.3K SCSI drive with a LSI 21320 SCSI controller
    (http://www.lsilogic.com/products/ultra320_host_bus_adapters/lsi21320.html )
I am also running a IDE drive on the primary IDE channel set as slave.
I went to the bios and changed the boot order to use the SCSI HD as the first boot device and proceed to intall windows XP. I pressed F6 to install the SCSI drivers and everything went fine until the reboot after all the files has been copied. I would get an error message saying something like:
"NTLDR cannot find boot drive etc"
I have no idea what to do...i tried everything and i am 100% sure that its not my SCSI HD or SCSI card.
    PLZZZZ HELP ME!!!!!!! PLZZZ HELP!!!!!

Found it set your boot order to bootable add in card first in the screen shown here courtesy of HardOCP : http://www.hardocp.com/image.html?image=MTA4MjM1MDg3NWxrOFNyWHJRcTNfMl8yNl9sLmdpZg==
    That should do ya.
Also be sure that the LSI controller is configured to use the Seagate drive to boot from. There is usually an option of which channel to boot from in the HBA BIOS.

  • SOS!!! iTunes and new external hard drive

So I just hooked up my external hard drive (LaCie d2 160GB) and I moved all of my music onto it to free up some space on my computer. I have a lot of music (30+ GB), and my computer was sluggish because of it. Well now I have my music on this nice handy dandy hard drive, but when I open my iTunes, every song has an exclamation point next to it. I already went to iTunes preferences and changed the iTunes music folder location to the LaCie hard drive, but it still won't locate the songs unless I do it manually. I DO NOT WANT TO MANUALLY LOCATE 6500 SONGS!!!! What can I do???? I already restarted my computer, but I can't get these files recognized!!!

This is how Apple say it should be done:
iTunes: Moving your iTunes Music folder
If you moved it manually and then changed the preferences to tell iTunes where the music folder is you are really telling iTunes where to put new stuff.
Move all your music back to where it was and then follow the instructions above.
    Regards,
    Colin R.

  • Not booting from DVD drive | Flashing Question mark and face folder SOS!

Hey there! I am hoping one of you folks can help.
I noticed my iMac running really slow.
I could not find my OS disks, so I bought OS X Leopard
When I tried to boot from DVD it would flash the question/face folder for about 30 seconds then reboot normal. (I was able to install the OS. Just can't boot from the disk in order to run disk utility)
Time got away from me and now my system is REALLY slow...
I went and bought Disk Warrior
Same issue, only my drive spits out that disk. (I can run and burn other disks)
I won't discuss my failed attempts at getting help from the Apple store and by having the geniuses (not) call me. I would rather not pay an arm and a leg to have an approved repair center run the disk utility for me. I've already spent $169 on the OS and $100 on Disk Warrior... PLEASE HELP

I think you are going in a totally wrong direction. Your profile indicates you have Leopard (10.5.X) however I don't believe that what you recently purchased. I think you purchased Snow Leopard (10.6.X), these are two totally different OS's! Unless you got extremely lucky and found someone selling 10.5.x then naturally you would have the problem you did trying to boot from it. My advice is:
    1. Look to see what version of OS X you are running (click the Apple in the upper left of this screen and then choose About this Mac) then cross check what version of the OS you recently purchased.
    2. If you are running 10.5.x then you will need to call Apple and purchase replacement discs for a nominal charge. Once received you should be able to boot from that disc and run Disk Utility from it.
    3. If you are running 10.6.x then re post (with an updated profile) so we can determine what the next step is.
It seems like you don't know what you are doing and in an effort to save money you are probably going to spend more than taking your machine to an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
    Regards,
    Roger

  • SOS! My MacAir could not be turn on after I erase the hard drive memories

After I erase the hard drive memories, the MacAir could not be turn on. When I turn it on, there is a question mark show in the screen n then nothing. What should I do now?

After I erase the hard drive memories, the MacAir could not be turn on.
With no OS to startup to, that would be the expected result.
Restart and hold down the Command+R keys to startup into Recovery Mode. Reinstall the OS.
If that doesn't work (you erased literally the whole drive), restart and hold down Command+Option+R to launch Internet Recovery Mode. The entire OS for your model Mac will be reinstalled.
You will need an Internet connection for either OS installation.

  • G5 Hard Drive SOS

Hi I have a PowerMac Dual 2.0Ghz running OSX 10.4.10.....I just ran "verify disk" in disk utility and the response was
"Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit - Volume Needs Repair"
As I understand I need to pop in my installation disk and run disk utility...but before I do that I would like to make sure that everything is backed up. I only have one hard drive installed so I would like to back everything up, or clone, on an external G-Raid 2. What would be best way to do this, and is there anything I need to know before I try and repair the hard drive?
Finally, could this hard drive problem explain why none of my Firewire ports work?
    thanks!

    Hi Hatter -
Thank you for your response, I checked out a bunch of threads and have backed up all of the important files.
I also checked out Disk Warrior's website but I wasn't sure how it worked....when trying to repair the disk will it delete information or will there be prompt before any information is deleted?
    thanks.

  • Replace DVD drive & broke start button putting the case back on SOS  HELP!?

So I am a firm believer of DIY but after replacing my Superdrive, I "broke" my power button. Is there any way to bypass powering up besides that button in the back? There are keyboards that have power buttons for Macs, will these work and could you recommend a couple.
    Please any help.
    emac 800 mHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Hi Ellen,
    Welcome to the Discussions!
Sorry, although there are a few keyboards with a power button, they won't work if your Mac doesn't support this way of powering.
You'll have to repair also your power button.
Easy for a firm believer of DIY...
    Good luck!

  • Hard drive issues related to a recent install of iLife 2005

    SOS!
I have a G3 iBook (18G internal memory) that I use with a LaCie 250GB FireWire external drive.
Since I have so many Gigs of music, pics, etc. I've removed all my personal files off the startup disk and have them stored on the external drive leaving only operating system and applications on the start up disk.
So...I just purchased iLife so that I could use the upgraded iPhoto. In the process of trying to install iPhoto I was told I didn't have enough room on the start up disk to load the application. So, I went through my hard drive and deleted a few unnecessary applications (like games, NOT anything essential to run the OS) and moved every byte of personal files to the external drive. In the process I was able to remove only enough to make about 1.7G available left on the HD. The iPhoto upgrade did install successfully.
So, now I have the upgraded iPhoto but I've got two issues, the second one seems to be directly linked to this install.
1 - I can not figure out what is taking up so much room on my startup disk. I don't have any large applications except the Apple applications and MS Office X -- no other games, database software -- I even moved my copies Illustrator and Photoshop onto the external drive. I am concerned that having so little space left on my startup disk is going to cause problems through I can't figure out what else to delete. Is there a software I can run to uncover any hidden files?
2 - Since this install my MS Word will not open documents. It simply freezes up. All the other apps in the Office X suite work fine --- MS Word is the only app effected.
These are perplexing issues -- any help in diagnosing what is going on and/or what I should do next would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks for listening!
    Meredith

    Hi,
The trash file is a good suggestion --- I did delete pictures from iPhoto but perhaps didn't purge them from the Trash so there is a "copy" still in the trash. I'll give that a try tonight and if correct will change this question to answered.
Otherwise, yes, I moved files/apps then trashed the main copy.
    Thanks for your help!
    Best, Meredith

  • Time machine on external drive will not back up itunes media file on a separate external drive. Have already reformated itunes media drive, dragged itunes media backup file from time machine (old copy) and removed time machine plist and restarted.

Two external drives, one for time machine backups and a second (daisy chained firewire) for itunes media folder . Time machine fails to backup the media file saying could not be completed, with no error specified. Steps taken already include reformating drive with media, dragging older media backup file from time machine disc to media disc, and deleting time machine plist and starting time macine preferences upon startup. Media folder is approx 200 gb, mostly ripped dvd movies.
    Any help for this??

  • Why does my MacBook Pro mid 2010 sound a SOS signal on start-up?

Since last month our MBP mid 2010 started to have boot issues. Sometimes it boots fine 10 times, other times it will take time and patience before you get through the SOS signals. After it is finally started, it will work perfectly and also putting it to sleep gives no problems. Only when you restart or shutdown the machine and start again it might fail, but it is random.
We have been to Apple Store Amsterdam, but according to their tests, the memory was fine. Also the RAM was reseated and other RAM was used, but the problem persists. This rules out a faulty memory I think. What we didn't do is only use one of the two slots, since I am not sure the system will run normally then.
I am afraid this is a logic board issue if I am not mistaken, but (of course) I hope it can also be something else. Are there any other tests that we could do?

    Hey Alomolife,
I also still have no clue. At this point I notice that the MBP gets very cold over night and it does not start. If I heat it up by using a hairdryer or the oven, it will start up. So basically I can only restart it when I have tropical temperatures in the house.. Maybe the mechanical part of the hard drive does not work properly in the cold. This way of working is of course not something I would like to keep doing. How did you get your machine started again?

  • Using OS 9.2 on external drive

Hallo, everyone, this is an SOS from Jack, a newcomer to the world of iMac and Tiger. Can anyone help me find a way of using 9.2 and Quark 4 for certain work I have to do? Could I use a bootable FireWire drive such as the LaCie Mini or Triple Extreme to create a separate olde-world environment?

Thanks, Al, for the very quick response, even if it wasn't what was hoped for. Maybe I'll explore something like Boot Camp to help me produce documents that can be emailed to 9.2 users and opened (or converted to Quark 3) by them.
Or maybe I'll find house-room for the old G3 I was going to throw out. Thanks again – Jack.

I’m going to get the I Mac and since the new I Mac doesn’t have DVD drive on it I was thinking to get the Samsung SE-506AB Slim Portable Blu-ray Writer in order to burn movies from I movie do I need a special software for that since the SE-506ab comes only with windows software.. but I did check and it is compatible with apple. Can you please advise me and or let me know if I’m buying the right stuff or if there is any other blu ray that will work with the I mac as plug and play.
    Thank you
    Haim

This freezing reminds me of really old Macs, long ago, in the days of the old-school peripherals like SCSI drives, terminators, scanners and the like. If you had a SCSI conflict, like the wrong device ID's or something, you'd freeze up like that. Back in those days you'd call 800-SOS-APPLE (AAPL?) and they'd run you through disconnecting all your extra hardware - Jaz and Zip drives, CD burners, scanners etc and then eliminate them one by one by adding them incrementally and testing for the freeze/bomb dialog.
But, today we have Firewire and none of those ancient issues (no free lifetime tech support either). My iMac's ports are all full, and I only know which devices are connected when I have to remove something for another device. iSight, scanner, card reader, external hard drive, USB soundsticks, etc. You wouldn't happen to have any SCSI devices hooked up, would you?
Out of curiosity, have you tried a different USB/Firewire port for the hard drive? Or run the hardware test DVD that comes with your computer? This weird freezing seems to suggest a problem with the computer, RAM or network more than a device. Bad devices, in my experience, cause kernel panics, not freezing.

  • SOS...Cant Install CS5, Exit Code 7, memory requirement not met, etc.

I am attempting installation of newly purchased CS5 Design Premium.  My system will not support InDesign so I unchecked that before attempting install. I ran install under normal and safe boot and the following messages occur in each..
    Exit Code: 7......0 fatal error(s), 65 error(s), 124 warning(s)
WARNING: DW036: Payload cannot be installed due to dependent operation failure, and so on...
and the first of the errors....
ERROR: Updating driver data failed. Driver entry was not added. ARP estimated size 3726KB
ERROR: DW050: The following payload errors were found during install:
ERROR: DW050:  - Adobe WinSoft Linguistics Plugin CS5: Install failed
ERROR: DW050:  - Adobe CSXS Infrastructure CS5: Install failed
ERROR: DW050:  - SiteCatalyst NetAverages: Install failed,
and so on, stating all installations had failed.
My file system is Journaled HFS+ , (is this case-insensitive??) with 30 GB free. I am running a 32bit MacBook with OSX 10.6.8  I have been on with tech support where I purchased the CS5 design premium. I have 1GB RAM, I was told by them that I need 2GB, the box system requirements state it needs 1GB and the read me file says I need 500MB.
Is this something that would prevent my install and cause these install errors under exit code 7?  The warning pertaining to dependent operation failure seems too generic to help at all.  I have been trying to get this program up and running for a week and my work is piling up, please help or advise.  My head is spinning!
Note: Please keep in mind that I am new to Mac OS. I always been stuck with a Windows PC until recently. Therefore some things are difficult for me to grasp at this point.
THANK YOU FOR ANY AND ALL HELP!SOS...Cant Install CS5, Exit Code 7, memory requirement not met, etc.
