HD DVD encoding and playback problem

Hello,
we are running into a problem with some HD dvd authoring lately. We are using 1920x1080 23.98fps film based source material and encode it for HD DVD use with compressor. Like it says in the documentation we are using the hd dvd presets and just adjust the output to 720P for an H.264 encode. Apparently since the last upgrade to DVD studio 4.2 it is now possible to encode progressive h.264 with a framerate of 23.98 fps. Well as i said we encode the footage with compressor, import it into DVDSP 4.2 and include it into our project. Everything works fine until we put it into our DVD player (Toshiba HD-A20). The menus and everything works and looks great, but when we are playing the 720P 23.98fps H.264 clips we get a way too fast playing clip, basically as if it is trying to play it at 29.97 fps. Does anyone else run into that problem? First we thought it is the player, but then we tried playing the disc in our Macpro and the same problem. 1920x1080 works great with Mpeg2 29,97fps compression, even though, because we have film based 23.98fps source material it seems to stutter slightly. I wonder if we need to include 2:3 pulldown in order for the player to remove it properly. Any help would be great.
Thanks,
Gorilla

Harm,
Sorry for not responing for a few days, but I runned the benchmark you'll send me. The main results (dee details attached file):
53,6,  secs Total Benchmark Time
6,4,  secs AVI  Encoding Time
14,2,  secs MPEG Elapsed Time
33,  secs Rendering Time
Since the potential problem is my hard disk, inaddition, I runned HDtune (hopefully it will help pinpionting the problem):
disk1: avarage transfer rate: 94MB/s, acces time 13.8ms, burst rate 185MB/s
disk2: avarage transfer rate: 85MB/s, acces time 14ms, burst rate 157MB/s
disk3: avarage transfer rate: 73MB/s, acces time 13.9ms, burst rate 183MB/s
Analyzing these results, could the current hard disk configuration cause the problem I have, or is my system to slow anyway to edit AVCHD material?
If the hard disk configuration is the problem, could it be solved by applying your suggestion by removing all partitions? Since, I'm not looking forward of removing all partions(re-installing windows (dual boot win7 and vista), shifting a huge amount of data, etc), but if it would help I will do it.
Thanks inadvance,
Jeffrey

  • Encoding and playback problem HD files

    Hi all,
Currently, I'm using a new HD camcorder and have no problem with importing and playing these files is premiere cs4 pro. However, when I'm using six video track at the same time I experience some playback problems. After rendering, the video's play, but not smooth, they  skip frames and playing a few frames back. In other words, it seems that the video playback stutters. The problem still excists when I encode the project to any file (mpeg2-blu ray, avi, etc). When using two video tracks (with two HD video) this problem is not present, even when these video's are in slowmotion. Installing the new update (4.2) did not solve the problem.
    Specs of my system:
    Quad core Q6600 @3.0GHz (overclocked)
    8gb RAM
    >200gb free disk space
    windows 7, 64-bit
Does anyone have some suggestions to solve this problem? Thanks in advance.

  • DVDSP HD framerate and playback problem

My HD DVD project has assets encoded at H.264 1280x720 and 23.976fps. The framerate in the Asset window reads 23.976, but the inspector window claims a frame rate of 59.94 for the asset. Can I force the interpretation to be 23.976?
I am assuming this is why on playback I get steppiness, like the video can't keep up with the audio. I don't have playback issues in simulation mode, just in the final burn of the HD DVD.

  • Can you replicate the video DVD autolaunch and playback on a Flash drive?

I'm creating a motion graphics presentation in Motion and I normally burn these to DVD with DVDSP where it automatically plays when you insert it into a DVD player or computer.
My client wants to distribute the presentation on Flash drives, though, and give those out. My thinking is that a Flash drive is only data and so we would need to distribute the presentation as a QT movie file, which would require the end user run the file.
There's no way to make a computer think a Flash drive is a video DVD, is there?
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the reply.
Yeah, the companies you buy those custom USB Flash drives from will put any file you want on them and I'm familiar with the auto run .ini option in Windows. The problem with that is playing a QuickTime movie file on a PC or Mac doesn't look as good at full screen as a video DVD, in my opinion, and the end user would have to manually tell it to go full screen. Finally, not all computers have the auto run feature enabled because of the virus issue you cited, and the end user would have to right-click on the drive and select "Explore" in Windows, or find the file in the Finder, and then manually run it.
Video DVD is great because it looks great at full screen and it's platform agnostic. If you insert one into any computer with a DVD drive, it will either auto play or it will give the user a dialog asking them if they want to play it.
But from a marketing perspective, the USB Flash drive is better because when you give them out to people (with your company's logo on it), people are more likely going to use it and see your presentation versus a DVD disc.
    Thanks!

  • ITunes 7 sound and playback problems

I downloaded iTunes 7 today and when I went to play a track I recieved hidious distortion from every track in my library. I have checked my speaker volume, system volume, iTunes volume and played other media players to see if the same problem came up with them and it did not. I also had iTunes running moments before I downloaded 7 with no problems so its definately 7 related. I have made sure the the equalizer in 7 is turned off and checked each and every setting to see if anything is messing it up and have not found anything. I have reintalled the software twice now as well. I run a Audigy 2 ZS and assume my drivers are up to date if not a fairly recent version.
I should also mention that I run Windows XP 64-bit and have all the Windows updates up to date. One thing I noticed is that the Music Store icons next to each song are only appearing when I have the song highlighted which may indicate some bugs as I know the arrows use to be next to each item in the window in the iTunes versions prior. I bring that up obviously because perhaps 7 isn't running well on XP-64 yet.
Any ideas on where I should start to troubleshoot this? The best description for the sound is a huge distortion filter where you can kind of make out the song behind layers of static and hiss. Its definately something to do with the software or its interation with my hardware and not nessicarly any volume settings that I can find.

Me too.... Just upgraded to iTunes V7. Now I cannot play anything from within iTunes. When playing a song, it is just garbled. You can hear the song enough to tell what it is. But it is severly distorted. More of a "repeating warbling" type sound. Like a scratched record that is playing the same section over a few times before moving on. Also, when I double click a song to play, it takes 12-15 seconds before any sound at all comes out.
In my other players, like Windows media, songs play just fine. All other audio seems OK. Just now cannot play anything in iTunes V7.
I have had iTunes since at least version 4 or 5, and upgraded everytime a new version came out. Each time with no issues until now.
    Using Windows XP, SP2
    2 Gig RAM
    2 Terabytes Data storage
    AMD 4800 Dual processor
Sound Card - Creative Emu 1212
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks...

  • Mobile and Devices: iPhone 5 and Playback Problems

I'm using clips from my iPhone 5 and importing them into Adobe and I am not sure which setting under Mobile and Devices to choose at the beginning when I open my new project? The first or the second? Also whether I pick the first or second option after I import the clip once I drag both the audio and video file into my timeline my clip won't play in my timeline and when I press play nothing happens and the screen just stays with the thumbnail or beginning of the video and the "box" or stop icon appears so it won't allow you to click play, my clip just won't play when I've dragged it into my timeline. Is it because I didn't choose the correct setting under Mobile and Devices? When I drag the clip into the timeline it says this clip doesn't match the sequence you choose and I change the settings to match the video for the format that it's in, but the clip simply won't play... I don't understand.

    >importing them into Adobe
Adobe is a company... which program are you using?

  • Square pixel footage to DVD - scale and quality problems

i've got footage from DVDs that i've captured using handbrake. This gives me quicktime movies (mp4 format) that are 720 by whatever the height of the original movie - minus the black bars. So for a letterbox clip that i've captures the dimensions are 720 x 336.
I want to edit the clip in final cut pro and burn back onto DVD. The mp4 clip has been ripped using a high data rate and the quality is fine. If I set up the sequence settings to be identical to the clip (720 x 336, square pixels, field dominance none, output mp4) then it looks fine in fcp and doesn't need rendering.
But this file is no good to use in DVD studio pro as it stretches the clip vertially to meet the 720 x 576 DVD resolution.
If i change the sequence resolution to 720x576 it seems to letterbox it fine and now it needs rendering, but when rendered i get a lot of boxy artifacts appearing in the video (the footage has a pure blue background so really suffers from any compression issues)
How do i set this up to make a DVD
    DP Mirror door G4 867Mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Arrrrrrr!
Sounds like we have arrrrselves a pirate!
Wether it be 4:3 or 16:9 you'll have to be puttin' that footage in a sequence that studio pro will be able to digest. You're going to have the bars regardless.
Figure on making it right for your final output.
I guess it's some kind of TV.
Still you can put it one of those two conver to MPEG2 and it'll work for ya just fine.

  • Best video format to encode for playback on iBook G4 1.2GHz?

I have been scratching my head for a week on this. What is the best video format that is highest quality and will playback smoothly on my iBook g4 and my iPhone 4? It has 1.25GB of RAM and I upgraded the HD to a WD 250GB 5400 RPM IDE drive 2 years ago and it's running dual boot Leopard 10.5.8 and Tiger 10.4.11 (keeping Tiger for Classic Mode).
I have a very large HD video collection consisting of 720p HD DVDs and 1080p Bluray discs that I have already spent a year to convert to MKV and MP4 files for storage on my media server. They have all been ripped and encoded with H264 using Handbrake. The average 720p movie is about 4.5GB and the average 1080p movies run about 8GB. I have over 100 movies stored on my media server and they playback fine on all my computers. They work fine on all my Windows 7 systems, they even play fine on my G5 2.0GHz DC late 2005 Powermac with 8.5GB Ram and the NVidia 7800GT.
Most of my 720p files can be reduced in size and or quality to 1-2GB and are playable on my iPhone 4, iPad 2 and even my little Acer Aspire One netbook in m4v or mp4 format.
I know my iBook is out of date, but no matter what compression method I have tried, the only thing it can play is MPEG-2 encoded media. And it cannot handle any h264 video I make, even at 480p settings using the simple profile. Since MPEG-2 takes 4-8GB per movie, this is a huge waste of HD space. And if I encode my movies like the old iPod video size, it looks like crap in full screen. I really want to store about 20 movies on this iBook for playback when I travel since I have 2 extra batteries. I need to movies to playback on the iBook and be able to transfer them to my iPhone 4 or iPad at any time.
Is there any method for getting 480p to encode and playback well on this iBook without making it look like crap or using the old DivX avi standard? If I have to reduce all my movies for playback on the iBook, I don't want to go lower than 480p because I want the same conversions to work on my iPhone 4 as well with decent quality. It is redundant to keep making copies of each movie for each device. Anyone have any suggestions? I don't want to take my little netbook around with me because the screen is too small and there is no opticle drive.
If anyone has any ideas, please post which Handbrake profile or other that can work... or let me know if my iBook is just garbage now. Thanks!

I am not asking you how to rip a DVD. I am asking how to convert any video file for decent playback on my iBook or iPhone!
This feature is available in iTunes so you can convert your DVDs to iPod playable formats. But when iTunes or Handbrake (or even Apple Compressor) convert anything, even my own videos made with Final Cut and iMovie, they will play on any iDevice other than my iBook unless I use the lowest most terrible video format.
I am just trying to figure out the proper video format the iBook can play. I am not ripping the DVD's right now... did that years ago anyways (and half of the videos I want to convert I made with iMovie during my travels in China and Hong Kong... I am just trying to play movies I already own on an older iDevice... my iBook. Converting purchased videos and home made videos is in no way illegal.
You misunderstand what I am asking. I am not trying to break digital copyright. If this is breaking digital copyright, then why does iTunes allow me to convert the movies for my iPhone 4 in the first place? You are telling me if I didn't purchase the movie from Apple I cannot watch it on my iPhone and iBook? That is not right.
I just want to know what the proper video playback requirements are for the iBook hardware. Plain and simple. If it is illegal in any way to tell me how to do it, just tell me what video my iBook supports. Apple tells me what video my iPhone supports ie. 1280x720p @ 29fps.... blah blah blah. Seems so far the iBook can only play a DVD MPEG-2 stream and no advanced codecs like h263 or h264. I just want to know what format the iBook can handle.
I have exported movies from iTunes and of my time in Hong Kong from iMovie and I cannot get them to play on the iBook at all if they are even 480p. So I just need to know what the max video playback is. If it can only play 320x240 or something, it is completely useless. I remember years ago when I bought the iBook, it did play the sample h263 and h264 videos that Apple had on their website (some of them 480p-720p)... but today it seems it can't play anything but 320x240 or less without getting locked up. I know the HD video requirements are G5 or higher... but we are talking DVD size cannot play in h264 mp4 formats, only MPEG-2 formats. This makes no sense? So I need to know the exact maximum resolution, framerate and codec this iBook 1.2 GHz can handle.
Don't tell my watching movies on my iBook, even the ones I made is illegal.

  • H264 encoding settings - problems with FLV/F4V conversions and playback... HELP!!!

I do a lot of LIVE ENCODING and have been struggling with FMLE. I own the Adobe Creative Suite of applications and am pretty familiar with working with compatible/required formats, etc.
We have been primarily using VP6/mp3 for encoding. Most of our work is SD. We also always seem to have trouble when trying to encode the FLV file to another format, audio always seem to be out of sync, but sometimes it works...
Do you know why that would be regarding the FLV audio falling off sync when encoding to another format, such as MOV? Also, when we try to play back the FLV, the audio sounds garbled up and only plays well in Adobe Media Player.
I keep hearing H264 encoding will provide better video, but I just can't get that to work. Also, why is it that my entire CS4 suite of applications can't read or playback the F4V file- that's unacceptable from Adobe, just a big huge pain the butt... I've had to buy several cheapie applications to try and read F4V files and try to convert it, except that converting F4Vs seems to be a hit-or-miss.
What should I be using to playback and convert F4Vs? I also heard changing the extension to MP4 works, but I haven't seen that work, not even once. The cheap video conversion apps I have that read F4Vs are: FFMPEGX and Wondershare (Youtube). Sometimes they open F4V, but not most of the time...
I am using a super fast new Macbook Pro i7, 8GB ram (not the thunderbolt/usb3), CPU always runs smoothly and effectively.
Also, I always use the Canopus ADVC-110 as my transcoder. I do both video via Firewire IN or Composite IN, then Firewire OUT into the Mac encoder. FMLE sees it ok, but I wonder if this device might be my problem.
    VP6 settings are as follows:
    VP6 video / MP3 audio
    300 to 500k video
    30 fps
    640x480 in/out
    44100hz audio
    56k audio
We want to start using H264 encoding settings, but in my experience trying it out, the output file is ALWAYS PROBLEMATIC. Also, when testing a live stream, the audio seems to fall off sync with the video.
I am looking for your recommendations on the H264 settings I should try. Most of my events are simple meetings with 1 to 5 speakers, mostly talking heads. We rarely encode high motion video, but I would also like to be able to adjust H264 settings for both talking heads and medium to high motion without (any) frame drops.
I have tried streaming to multiple/different Flash Media Servers, archived only to file, and H264 results seem always bad.
Any recommendations from professionals in the live streaming arena are much appreciated. I thank you for your time in advance.
    Thank you!

    Hello Hugo
Sorry to know that you are facing these kind of issues, let me try to reply and understand issues one by one.

  • Premiere CC 7.2.2 crashes when trying to export via Media Encoder and Encore crashes while DVD build

    Hello,

    Tyan S7050GM4NR motherboard
    Windows 7
I freshly installed Windows 7 and the CC-Apps PremierePro, After Effects, Media Encoder, Photoshop and Speedgrade.
When I try to export any video from premiere to the media encoder premiere crashes without any error message. The problem is not the project: I created several new projects and even if I only have one Graphic-File/Bars/h264-video in the timeline that I try to export: premiere crashes. When I export directly from premiere it works, but there is no chance to go via media encoder. The strange thing is that I can export from after effects to the media encoder without any problem...
Second Problem: Encore crashes also. Everytime I try to build a DVD => Encore crashes
    Does anybody have an idea?
Here is what I already tried:
Yesterday it worked fine today it crashes when I export from premiere via media encoder.
    1. Bars+Tone => export => crash
    2. Video Project with 2 short h264-files => export => crash
    3. I used Software only renderer => crash

  • DVD encoded video and audio progressively get out of sync

    Hi Compressor professionados,
I've been trying to finalise a DVD I’m creating but keep having the same show-stopping problem where I just can't get the timing of the audio and video right after encoding it to MPEG-2/ac3 for DVD Studio Pro. When I lay it into the track in DVDSPro it plays fine at the start of the track but as the clip gets longer the audio and video gets further and further out of sync, by a few seconds (eg. for over 1 hour length footage).
I've seen similar posts online about timing issues with Compressor but nothing I saw has hit the nail on the head for me. I also posted my problem on Creative Cow but didn't get the help I needed to fix my problem.
    Here's the specs:
    FCPro X 10.1.4
    Video project: 1080i (@ 25i)
    Audio 44.1 kHz
    Render: Apple ProRes 422
    Length: 01:13:05:02
    Compressor 4.1.3
MPEG-2 Setting (only what I think is important... or I don't know)
    Format: Elementary Stream
    Stream Usage: DVD
Retiming: Set duration to: 100% (shows 01:13:05:02)
    Video Frame Rate: Auto (25fps)
    Field Order: Same as Source
    GOP: greyed out at 12
    ac3:
Sample rate: 48kHz (the only choice)
    Data rate: 224 kbps
    DVD Studio Pro 4.2.1
    PAL DVD-9 project
From FCP I send my project to Compressor and when I drop both a DVD Audio and Video codec onto it they both show as Retiming 100% (and the length looks the same) but the results are still unsynchronised at the end of the clip when they are placed into the Track in DVDSPro. I've also tried changing different settings, like MPEG-2 Retiming duration to "So source frames play at 25 fps", but I'm still having troubles.
At one point I managed to get the A/V timing right for my track and I then ran what I thought was the same settings for all my other tracks in the DVD but they ended up with a similar outa-sync problem so I deleted everything to try again and realised I'd deleted my good files. And I just can't seem to replicate it again. I’m not sure if it was an accidental mistake that worked or I hit on the right settings. Either way, it shouldn’t be this hard to get it right, for heaven's sake!!!
Also, strangely, when I open the MPEG-2 file in QuickTime Player (10.4) it shows 01:10:30 long but if I open the same file in QuickTime Pro 7 it shows as the correct 1:13:05. And DVD Studio Pro shows 01:13:05:02 for both the audio & video assets but their sync is still out at the end.
This problem stopped me from producing the DVD last Christmas and I tried to pick it up again to give it to the family for this Christmas but ended up having to bail yet again - not impressed!!!
I'm hoping it's a simple solution of getting the settings right but it may also be a bug! Apparently, my bro-in-law has had similar problems and has ditched the DVD route altogether. I already have all of my menus etc. set up and I'd hate to have to ditch all that hard work.
    Thanks in anticipation,
    Brett

Thanks so much Russ & Tom!
It was as easy as changing the sample rate in the FCP project from 44.1 to 48 and sending it to Compressor again. I think it was set to 44.1 because I had the project set to automatically assign the parameters from the first video dropped into it. I haven't checked yet but the audio from my camera is likely 44.1.
It would be nice if Compressor produced a warning message when you set the codec up for DVD audio that the original is set to a different sample rate & may cause timing problems when resampled to 48kHz.
Anyway, again THANKS lads for solving what has been a year long problem for me and now I can complete my Christmas project, albeit late!
    Virtual chocolates to you both!!!

A few months ago, I purchased a new iMac. I recently created a movie using iMovie. Then I found out that iDVD is not included. So I have the problem that I want to burn a movie that I can play on my DVD player and watch on a television. I rang Applecare and was told that I need a program called BURN.
Is this correct? I can export the movie from iMovie in a m4v format, but I think I need to convert this to iso format before I can burn the disc.
I know there are programs like TOAST that will do this, but it is expensive.
I would be very grateful for any assistance.

Burn will not do what you want, and there is no real substutute for iDVD.
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac?
Apple insists that the entire world has access to fast broadband (and are prepared to pay for the considerable bandwidth usage) and wants to distribute home movies to friends and relatives via download (iCloud, YouTube, Facebook, whatever) rather than mailing them a DVD. The fact that in reality not all users do, has so far had no effect on this policy. If you scream and shout loudly enough down the phone Apple may send you a free copy of iDVD. Stating that they would return their brand new Mac unless they received a copy of iDVD worked for some, but that is now said to have been withdrawn by Apple.
Also, you can complain bitterly via Apple’s Feedback link, perhaps suggesting that Apple could have provided a choice between burning DVDs and distributing home movies by other means. You may feel that Apple should not dictate how you destribute family videos or photos to distant relatives and friends, and should not assume that every user is prepared to pay for the excessive bandwidth usage charged by ISPs for huge downloads from the App Store:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that came with OS 10.7 Lion (which also omitted iWeb) or that comes with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD 7, i.e. iLife version 9 onwards. You should also do this if you plan to buy a new Mac anytime soon, as stocks of iLife that include iDVD will not be available for ever.
However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD. Also, of course, there is Roxio Toast, which is the best software for burning anything but again does not offer the flexibility of iDVD.
And if you think Microsoft are any better, their new Windows 8 operating system will not play DVDs, or burn them, unless customers buy an extra upgrade, the company has announced:  http://www.gizmag.com/windows-8-no-dvd-playback/22443/
In other words, computer manufacturers have declared optical media as dead, long before consumers are ready to stop using them, which is fine as long as they offered us a choice, but they won’t even do that. Flexibility and intuitive use of a computer seems to be a thing of the past.

  • Quicktime encoding and DVDS pro serialisation

Having problems with submitting a 47 min FCP timeline for compressor to encode I decided to try using the quicktime method to get an Mpeg 2 file. I am stopped by the message that my DVDS Pro must be serialised first in order to run the Qt MPEG encoder. I have uninstalled and reinstalled FCP Studio 5.1 plus all the updates, tossed the FCP Studio ID file and re registered but to no avail.
Blaming Leopard after which I have had problems with my 5 year old mac I have, on an external drive, installed OS 10.4.9 and FCP Studio 5.1 and all the updates ( ten in number), again with no improvement. In fact I had to manually install the mpeg 2 component as it did not appear in the list of options.
    Any suggestions?

I have managed to solve this one in a roundabout way. I have again uninstalled DVDS 4. Reinstalled DVDS2 ( still had the disc though I surrendered the FCP 4 install disc to update ) with its registration number. Updated to DVDS 4 and the encoding to MPEG 2 worked. Unfortunately the result is still jagged video.

  • Satellite X200 - HD-DVD playback problems

    Hi,
I've recently acquired an Satellite X200.
I decided to upgrade to the latest drivers and applications found on the Dutch support site.
Since I now have my first HD-DVD player, I also bought the latest Harry Potter on HD-DVD.
Playback with no upgrades didn't work, so I upgraded to the newer HD-DVD player.
Playback worked fine now, but when I upgraded all other stuff (Broadcom decoder, NVidia drivers, etcetera), playback hangs after just a few seconds.
I now rolled back pretty much everything and I can play the movie fine again, but ofcourse I would really like to keep my drivers up to date. Anyone here with similar experiences and (hopefully) a solution?
Another problem I have is when I hook up my TV through HDMI, playback stops.
The TV is not HD, but can downsample HD signals perfectly. I have an XBox 360 connected that I tested this with, but with the Toshiba, it just won't play.
Again, any and all tips are welcome...
    Maurice

    Hi there,
I would suggest you to reinstall the whole system and update your BIOS since it could be that the software is a bit overloaded or your system has too much stuff which is probably unnecessary.
Mostly the problem surely could be a damaged driver so please try e.g. a display driver from the european driver download site, maybe the work better than the dutch versions.
I assume that the problem is somewhere to search on the display drivers since the issue sounds really like them.
Is your X200 a SLI machine? If not then you could try this site www.laptopvideo2go.com because they have the most actual drivers and they fitted the drivers for mobile system.
    Good luck

I never have a problem connecting a new Apple product (AirBook, iPad) and even a basic laptop. Thanks for your help.

The AirPort Express Base Station (AX) can support up to ten (10) simultaneously connected Wi-Fi clients.
