HD DVD settings in Compressor question

I noticed some settings for burning a DVD 5 in HD on Compressor. I'm a bit confused because I though HD had to be made on a Blu Ray disc not on a normal 4.7 g/bt DVD.
If I were to choose this setting and make a DVD how would it play?
PS I started encoding my 52 minute FCP project in this way and 2 hours later it was only 1/4 done, so I thought it might be quicker to ask!

Correct. HD DVD is a format that lost to BluRay. But when there were both formats, Apple banked on HD DVD...lost. But, you can author an HD DVD that will play on an XBOX...that uses the HD DVD format.

On a Mac...or if someone has one of those JVC players. Other than that...dead format.

Yeah...stop it. That isn't the format you want. Either burn a regular DVD, an SD DVD that plays on most players. Or, if you have FCP 7, you can SEND TO and choose BluRay. But, you will need a BluRay burner. The burner in the Mac won't do BluRay.

DVD workflow and Compressor question

what is the best workflow to burn a great looking DVD from FCP timeline?
I tried exporting to Compressor and choose best quality 4:3 but it is very very slow. My project is 5 minutes and it is still processing...10 minutes and counting. Is something wrong?

I'm not he Major, but I often use dvdsp and bypass compressor for shorter projects. The issue is the ac3 audio that you get from compressor which uses a lot less bandwidth in playback than an aiff.
It's really the same engine, just with a different interface. I actually find it a bit easier in dvdsp to set up different bitrates. I'll render in the background while building my menus and it's ready to build and format by the time I am done. Of course there's no reason why you can't do the ac3 in compressor and let dvdsp do the mp2.
Lots of ways to accomplish the same thing. If you have a little time and a few blank dvd's why not play with it?

DVD Settings taking 10+ hours in compressor?

Is there a particular reason why when I export to Compressor, it takes 10+hours when I have things set on any of the DVD settings? I'm having this problem with both a 56 minute HDV and a 36 minute DV from FCP... Am I doing anything wrong? I'm on the new Mactels, so I wouldn't think it's my computer thats 'slow'.

Don't use the HD DVD settings if you are going to an SD DVD. It won't work. Use one of the SD DVD presets, like the 60 min preset.
Bear in mind that HDV is complex footage to deal with, and it will take a while to encode.

Can I Encode to These Settings with Compressor??

I need some help from you good people.
I have been tasked with preparing our video program for an SD Television Broadcast.
In my many years of using Final Cut, I have never had to export for an official SD Broadcast. So I declare up front that this is a new world for me from web and DVD creation.
But I seem to be having a hard time matching all of these settings using an MPEG-2 Transport Stream in Compressor. So I want to know if I can use Compressor to match these settings or will I miss some of what the station wants?
I've tracked down most of the major settings in Compressor. I highlighted below in bold and red what I am having trouble with.
I will also add that I was trying to work with the GOP I and P frames settings but do not see a choice for selecting 1 frame for each one.
Most of my other issues are with the audio settings. I went to "Extras" and selected Multiplex but don't have any other control over the audio.
So any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Disclosure: I haven't prepared a show for SD Broadcast either, but have been working with Compressor/DVDStudio Pro for a decade.
Looking at the specs, there are only a couple of unclear areas... the big thing is, they're asking for a Program Stream rather than Elementary Streams.
I looked into that codec and it seems capable of handling the task once you clear up the VBR/CBR and interlace/de-interlace questions.

Pal dvd settings

I have accidently deleted all the apple dvd settings out of compressor 3. Ive been told the only way to get them back would be to re install final cut studio. Its not possible for me to do this at the moment.
Would it be possible for any one who works in pal and makes pal dvds to recommend settings to me. I only have one setting at the moment which is constant bit rate to make preview disks.

Chapters don't show in DVD burned from Compressor 4

I followed instructions for setting chapter markers in FCP X and they don't show up in DVD created from Compressor 4 output. The chapters do show up under the "video" menu in Compressor 4 output settings, but only project title shows in the menu on finished DVD.
Am I missing a step somewhere?
I also wonder if I should invest in "Toast" software for more flexibility in output to DVD.
Any help on this topic would be appreciated

Possibly – if you need the capability for multiple tracks and/or a bit more choice in menus. But you don't need Toast for chapter navigation.

Wrong board -- but Compressor question

Hi All
Yes, I know this is the wrong board to post a Compressor question -- but the folks in the Compressor group seem to be baffled by this so I thought somebody in here might have a clue. I'm sure lots of us in here use Compressor on a regular basis -- so you may have an answer to share.
By the way, the problem I'm about to describe has become a common issue. Lots of people are having the exact same trouble and so far Apple really hasn't responded to the cries for help.
First of all -- I'm running Final Cut Studio crossgrade on a brand spankin new G5 dual 2.3. Everything is as clean as possible -- no other software has ever lived on this machine -- and there is nothing on there now except the aforementioned Studio. Everything is updated to the max.
Problem -- Compressor won't compress. When you throw a clip (ANY clip -- any movie any format) at it for mpeg2 compression, it grinds away for a while then quits with a "quicktime error 0" message. Never does it in the same place.
Those who have battled this thing say it appears to be a conflict between Compressor 2.0 and up and the dual processors. One workaround is to download CHUD tools and use the utility to turn off one of the processors. That apparantly works for some people -- not for others including me. No other solutions have come up. Supposedly, Apple hasn't commented or done much to address this.
Well -- this bug is really hurting me because I really need to do DVD compression. Yes, I know there are other compression products out there -- but doggone it -- Compressor ought to work. What good is it to anyone with a G5 if it's not gonna do the job it is designed to do?
Does anyone have ANY idea what's really going on with all that and have a real surefire solution? Folks on the compressor board have tried everything they can think of but to no avail.
Again, I know this is not the right room for this question --- but I'm sure Compressor is in the workflow of many people here -- so it becomes an issue for all of us.

Hi all -- me again -- the originator of this thread.
To answer the various questions that have been raised --
This happens on ALL clips I try to feed into Compressor. Now by that I mean when I use Compressor as a standalone. I'm a tweaker, but I've resisted that urge on several attempts and just tried to use the standard Compressor preset for mpeg2. I've tried FCP movies and generic Quicktime clips and stuff done in other flavors -- even some old spots done on a Targa card. Same result.
One thing I haven't tried yet is doing it thru DVDSP. Maybe that interface would make a difference. I DID, out of desperation, do a test using iDVD. It worked. Looked pretty awful but it worked.
I don't have Shake installed. Am aware of the problems associated with that.
This is so weird. There are some folks out there who have pretty much exactly the same system as I do -- they did the trick of turning off one processor -- and it worked for them. But it didn't work for me.
I dunno -- I'm going to keep digging and looking for a good solution. My thanks to all those who have taken the time to respond.

Dvd settings

Hi I know that this is in the wrong forum, but there is nobody in the DVDSP forum so I thought I'd post my question here as well. i have compressed my film down to 1280/720p and I have brought it into dvdsp. I am burning it to a dual layer sd dvd.
I don't want to compress the film any more as it was originaly 2k.
Will I be able to burn it to a sd dvd?
Will this dvd be able to play in normal dvd players?

SD DVD is 720x480. If you try to make a DVD of the files you already have, it will recompress.
You're better off creating new files with an SD DVD preset in Compressor.
Hopefully soon we'll have more options for creating HD-DVD and BluRay.

24 bit 94khz DVD Possible in Compressor?

I want to create DVD's that are audio only at the best quality. I have some recordings that are 24bit, 94Khz sample size that I would like to keep it that way on DVD. Is this possible? If so, what settings in compressor?

I've done this. But I didn't use compressor. I have recordings of the same resolution, and they are DVD-compiant AIFF files. So I just put them into DVD Studio Pro, and add a black frame for the video and stretch it out for the duration of the audio. You could also put in a slide with the track information.
Please note that these are DVDs. They are NOT DVD-Audio or Super Audio CDs. Those require different authoring software and specialized players. Although, some DVD players support DVD-Audio. But nothing could be simpler (or more easily played) than making DVDs with black video.

What happened to DVD settings?

In Compressor 3, there were 3 different pairs of DVD settings - ranging from best quality (90-minute DVD) to lowest quality and most time. What happened in Compressor 4? All I see is a single MPEG-2 for DVD setting.
If I'm burning a 10-minute clip to a DVD, how do I increase the quality to maximize my space?
Also, what do I use for audio?

Apple removed them. I've been researching how to move them from v.3.5 to v.4. If I can't find that specific trick, I'm going to recreate and post them with instructions for easily importing them. It'll be posted the same place I've posted instructions for how to bring your Custom Presets made yourself in Compressor 3.5 into v.4. Look at the bottom right of the page. Check back in a few days for the intructions to get those old DVD (and other) presets back into Compressor 4.

I would say yes. I once had the same problem (iPhone 5, IOS 7) and first restored to factory settings and after that from iCloud backup.
It worked very well.

Settings in Compressor 3.5 for HDV Video

Hi, for a long time i search the perfect settings in Compressor to play my home movies on the actual Mac mini and also the PS3 without any other transformation. i think 1280 * 720 (720p) is the best, but witch settings in the Compressor is perfect?

You need to select an output: MP4, MOV or the Apple TV settings. If you have Compressor 3.5 there are templates for Apple TV that work quite well. And I think, and I'm sure someone is ready to correct me, that either MP4 or MKV will play on the PS3

Color settings in Compressor

When I save a H.264 movie from Final Cut 7 the night scenes seem to have a lot of noise now. Is there a way to reduce the noise in the color settings in Compressor?

I think color output space is worth looking into. I need to export as a H.264 file, it is what's required by the film festival. Also, in the original ProRes files in Final Cut there is no noise at all, very clean, also very clean exported as a self contained Qtime movie, uncompressed.
The film was color corrected by a professional color grader so the problem is in the software settings with the H.264 codec.
