HD ERRORS. MOST LIKELY BATTERY PROBLEM

If your iPod is making funny noises and not properly booting or being recognized by Windows (no Mac experience here), then it is possibly your battery that has went south on you.
Simple tests include, charging the iPod fully, and performing a HARD RESET ON THE UNIT. I am not sure if this will erase the music on it, but most likely will just reset all of your settings. It may also not let you sync up with your iTunes anymore, as after this is done, I found that I had to re-register my iPod with iTunes.
The different gens have different methods of doing this. In the case of mine, turn the hold on then off, then perform a hard reboot. Pressing both menu and play at the same time for a couple of seconds.
This will cause the unit to hard reboot. Now, boot it into disc mode (pressing and holding forward and reverse for a couple of seconds), and plug it into your computer. This should work, you can also perform a scandisk on the unit to check and see if the HD has bad sectors on it. If so, a scandisk setting of full or thorough will re-map the bad sectors to good ones, and no new music will be written ot the bad sectors.
From here you can try and open iTunes to see if you can copy music to your iPod.
Now this may not work in 100% of cases, but i have been finding that this works for a variety of odd iPod behaviour. Apple knows the batteries are garbage, starting from the first gen of the device. Sometimes the HD is actually shot, other times the circuit board is shot. The battery is a cheap replacement for the unit, mine new (OEM) cost me $30 CDN with shipping from the States to Canada. I found it online through some searches for the battery part number.
Opening the unit can damage the acrylic coating, so be careful here. The battery I ordered came with a tool to help open the unit without damaging the acrylic. It was too late for me, but I didn't care as a $30 cdn iPod (4th gen 20gb) with some scratches is better than a $400 one without.
I hope this helps many of you guys out there with weird iPod behaviours. If anyone has any other tips, add them to this post to help others try and troubleshoot their iPods.
Cheers!

  • Skype can't connect - most likely router problem, ...

Lately I can't connect to Skype at home. I've tried a lot of different solutions but none of them work.
The problem started a few months ago when I just couldn't sign into Skype (can't connect). At that time I had no change in any network settings on my computer nor my router. Interestingly enough, I could connect to Skype on Ubuntu (I have dualboot). Though even Ubuntu eventually failed to connect back then (just can't sign in) - still no changes in my network. I couldn't be bothered at the time with the problem so I just didn't use Skype.
However after some time (some weeks or a month or two), when I tried to connect to Skype again, it worked (on Win 7 as well as Ubuntu). Again, no changes to my network have been done in the mean time (Skype might of been updated, but I doubt it was on both platforms at the same time).
So Skype worked for a while until about a month ago, when the problem reoccurred. This time I said I'm going to get to the bottom of this so here is the situation:
I can connect to Skype at work no problem (on my desktop as well as my Android phone)
I can't connect to Skype at home (just won't sign in) on my desktop nor my phone
    I have tried:
Reinstalling Skype with cleaning everything that Skype might have left behind
Installing an (a bit) older version 6.9 (because even the latest 6.11 didn't work). Though these two attempts I've come to see are in vain once I figured out that I can't connect to Skype on my phone as well.
Resetted my router a couple of times.
Reset my router settings to default.
Opened/forwarded Skype ports to my (local) IP. I even enabled DMZ to redirected all traffic to my desktop computer (although I'm not 100% sure that that worked as I imagine it should work).
Tried some proxy settings in Skype (Connection options) I found on your forum.
None of the above worked in any way...
My router is a TP-Link TL-WR1043ND with (I think the latest) firmware version 3.13.13 Build 130428 Rel.58290n (hardware is v1).
    TLDR:
I can't sign in to Skype at home. It works when I'm at work. I can connect to Skype on my phone if I'm at work (over WiFi) or if I'm on 3G, but not if I'm on my home WiFi. That said, no software firewall can be the problem here, but my router. However I have no more ideas as to what else I can try. This forum is my last hope for finding a solution.
    Please help.
    Solved!

I do not know the makeup of Skype's internal security policies when it comes to this as they are not too open about this. Most companies are not. These are the only reasons I believe a block would occur based off any company's security policy.
    1. A proactive measure - A blacklist of IPs is constantly obtained/updated to include anonymizer services that might harm the network.
    2. An active/counteractive measure -
    I. Someone uses an anonymizer to SPAM people on the Skype network:
    a. Users complain using the abuse option. Users get the IP Auto-banned.
    b. The company (Skype) receives the complaints or notices a trend and Manual/Auto bans the IP.
II. Too many people (connections) sign on with the same IP (due to an exit relay/proxy). Due to this being very suspicious, (maybe even DDos-like behavior) the IP is Auto-banned.
I tend to lean more towards the counteractive measure since I don't believe many proactive measures are needed to limit abuse. There is always at least one rotten apple that engages in illegal activity using anonymizers, proxies, etc. that ruin it for everybody. In reality I believe it is a combination/balance of the two. Not to be prejudice against anonymizers, just blacklists to protect the network from known attacks. For whatever reason once the threshold is met, the IP is banned.  If I had to guess how long it would be in intervals of 30 days (30, 60, 90, 120, etc.). The whole Internet is not going to banned so the security policies in effect can't be too strict. It's goal is probably just to limit the majority of bad behavior that causes problems for their customers.
Skype is not the only service that reacts this way. Even ISPs will receive notices and in turn will send notices to their customer that since illegal activity (RIAA notices, etc.) is occurring due to a Tor exit relay or some other anonymizer, the ISP will terminate services with that customer if they don't cease (due to breach of contract).
I don't know whether you can limit an exit relay so it can't be used to access Skype. It may be a lost cause. If I made the choice to run a similar service it would be with a whitelist of people I knew who wouldn't use it to perform illegal activity, just remain anonymous when online.
You shouldn't have any issues running a non exit relay since in doing so your IP is not being broadcast all over the Internet like a calling card which an exit relay does. Changing your modem's MAC address is something you need to call your ISP for. However changing your router's MAC address generally does not require that. All that is required is a reboot of the modem, router, and possibly computer if you run into issues. You will probably continue to run into the same problem as long as you attempt to run an exit relay.
Be aware that for every IP that get's banned on your ISP is another IP a person could get issued for 24 hours to a week + after it gets released. Some people then visit this community and complain how they can't connect when it worked not too long ago and how Skype "sucks". So sometimes things like this create a ripple effect for other customers.

  • Tough problem, iPod most likely corrupted won't charge...

Ok so this is the biggest problem I've gotten with my ipod yet. My ipod is the new 6th gen 120GB, I've got it three weeks ago. It worked fine. I went on a 10 day trip around Europe, and I've used my iPod thorough the trip, and I would recharge in hotels using a wall charger, and it worked fine. When we were returning home like 30 miles away from home I was listening to it and it was on the last strip of battery so I stopped listening. Later that evening, I wanted to listen to it, but since it said "Connect to Power", I plugged it into my wall charger. Normally it showed the apple logo for a few seconds and then an error popped up. It says www.apple.com/support/ipod , so I did.
It looks most likely from the Apple support website that my iPod got corrupted and needs to be reformatted. Now here's the biggest problem. I plug my iPod into my USB drive and my PC doesn't recognize it at all, neither does iTunes. All that the iPod does is show the apple logo and then the error message again, then it just turns off. I tried to reset it but it didn't help. In order to reformat it it needs to be charged and be in disk mode, but it won't charge and the PC won't recognize it. The only difference now is that it doesn't show the low on battery sign anymore. When I press the button it just shows the apple logo and then the error. It also makes quiet beeping sounds when it shows the logo and error sign. Another problem is that my dad got it fom me from USA and I live in Poland in a small town, and we don't have an Apple store here, and a bigger city is 2 hrs drive.
    What should I do?

    Hi,
There is a solved thread on this page about this error. The solution is to replace the battery because its storage capacity is low. The right part number can be found in a maintenance and service guide. Go to Support and Drivers page, enter your model and look in User Guides section.

"iPad update Error- There was a problem downloading the software for the iPad X you do not have enough access privileges for this operation. I've been having this problem for a while but it has yet to go away. Any help please?

OK. Good. The most likely culprit is either your firewall or anti-virus software. Temporarily disable both while you are doing the update (then, of course, turn them back on when you are done).

  • Plug problem?  Battery problem?

This evening the screen on my iBook G4 started oscillating between bright and not quite as bright (unevenly, but sometimes as rapidly as one second). At the same time, the battery icon would switch between showing the power supply connected and disconnected (battery icon). The battery had drained about 20% in spite of being plugged in. The plug glowed a constant green.
This was a relatively new (2 month) battery, so I got my previous battery which still works but discharges too fast to be very useful and I noted the same problem.
When I switched back to the new battery, it was now completely discharged and the iBook would no longer boot while it was installed. The plug continued to glow green and would not charge it.
After puzzling over this, I checked the output from the power supply and was getting about 22VDC. When I checked the plug with the VOM probes, it suddenly lit orange, so I plugged it back in and the iBook decided to boot up with the drained new battery and worked for about an hour - not charging the battery which showed 0% charged (though it was previously at about 80%), before it went back to a solid green plug and no charging. The iBook went immediately to sleep.
This time, though, I noted that when I wiggled the plug in the iBook, the green light on the plug would go out and I would have to rotate it around and generally persuade it to light back up green. Could not get an orange charging light again regardless of which battery I installed.
Ordinarily I would assume that my problem is probably a bad power supply - most likely the plug has gone bad, but since the new battery totally discharged, or was claiming to be discharged, in a matter of moments, I'm wondering what the deal is.
    Any ideas?

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
+I thought you were supposed to let the battery completely drain every so often to keep the thing healthy.+
Not so. That used to be true with older nickel-cadmium batteries, but is not true with the newer lithium-ion ones in iBooks. Sometimes a deep discharge can actually render a lithium-ion battery useless.
Read about Apple's suggestions on maintaining the battery in this Apple Knowledge Base article:
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
As for using the PowerBook's adapter, that wouldn't harm the iBook's battery as long as the adapter isn't defective (which, with that clicking sound, it sounds as if it likely could be).

  • T61 Battery problems

    Hi,
I've been having battery problems for the past week with my T61. Although it registers as being 80% charged and the status is 'plugged in' it also says that it's 'not charging'. After this began happening I did a clean wipe and installed Windows 7 and it's still ocurring. My laptop is now pretty much unusable except for when it's plugged in.
My X31 which is over five years old still runs... battery and all (even if the battery does only last for 20 minutes). What's with this battery? The laptop is only 1.5 years old!
    Thanks
P.S. Since I'm running win7 I don't have access to most of the ibm toolsuite except for access connections. They don't seem to have provided a new version of the battery management utils.

I've booted into linux with the same issues where there weren't any before and this issue occurred on XP-Pro 32-bit _before_ the windows 7 installation.
I've updated the drivers and got the Lenovo Windows 7 power manager. It's giving me the same error that other people have reported here "A battery error has occurred. The battery cannot be charged". I am at around 200 cycles. There are also a whole lot of people here (http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T61-and-prior-T-series-ThinkPad/T61-9-Cell-battery-failure-FRU-42T4511/m...) who have experienced the same issue with the same battery part (i.e. sudden battery failure... no gradual 'fading' as is typical with lithium ions)
Btw, I have the 42T4511 battery and I am four months out of warranty. >< Even with the extended warranty they apparently only support batteries for a year.
It seems pointless to shell out for another battery if it's just going to die in another year and a half. I paid the premium for the T61 and got my old company to buy them because of my experience with the IBM X31 (still going strong btw), but it seems as if quality has gone out the window along with the change in ownership.
I'm getting an MBP the next time around ><

    Hello and welcome to the forums;
Our phone support is open every day Monday through Sunday, although there are different hours of operation for the weekend. If after a webOS Doctor reset you are still experiencing the same problems, I would likely recommend replacement, either in a local store for your carrier or through our technical support department.
There may be additional technical support offered or suggested over the phone, this would need to be done first before a replacement could be issued.
    Hope this helps,
