HD export won't letterbox

I've been through this problem before, but for some reason I'm running into it again. I export my DVCPRO HD 720p60 (960x720) using current settings and drop it into Compressor, then use DVD best quality 90 minute settings at 16:9. After verifying my track settings in DVDSP I burn the DVD. In the past, my DVD has correctly letterboxed the 16x9 footage on a 4x3 TV and also displayed correctly on a widescreen TV at 16:9. Now however, no matter what I do I get a squeezed picture on the 4x3 TV!
What I have tried:
-Exporting square pixel 1280x720 uncompressed for compression: no good
-exporting currents settings (DVCPRO 720p60 which is 960x720 with a 1.2 px aspect): no good
-Every possible setting in aspect ratio even though I know they wouldn't work: no good
One last note, and this makes me suspect there's possibly corruption somewhere in compressor: I've been unable to make changes to the Dimensions area of the Geometry tab, they are permanently grayed out.
I'm at the end of my rope here, I have been struggling to do this for 2 days and getting nowhere. The most frustrating part is I've done this a hundred times before and never had this issue.
Thanks in advance.

When you simulate the dvd on your mac, is it correctly formatted for playback there? If so, then the problem is likely a setting in your DVDSP file. When you click on the track in your graphical view, is the display mode set for 16:9 letterbox?

  • Video won't letterbox

I have a HD video that when I burn a DVD it won't letterbox. In fact, it compresses the video vertically. I end up with a black frame around the entire image. Are there settings that I'm missing? It letterboxed automatically in iDVD 4.
Also, the discs will play on computers, but not on standalone DVD players.
Anyone experience these things or have solutions?

    Rick,
iDVD and 16:9 formatted movies still have some issues.
1st, unless the 16:9 movie comes from iMovie, iDVD doesn't know it's 16:9
You need the "Anamorphicizer" to fix this. Get it here:
    http://homepage.mac.com/sith33/FileSharing34.html
This should get iDVD to realize your original movie is 16:9 content.
However, the way iDVD sets some of the flags in the final DVD, some DVD players still won't letterbox the output. This fix is not needed by all DVD players, but you will get more consistent letterboxing if you use David A's "cookbook" to fix your iDVD images before burning.
    http://capital2.capital.edu/admin-staff/dalthoff/widescreen.html
    http://www.atpm.com/11.06/howto-idvd.shtml
On 2 of my personal DVD players (Pioneer & Apex) , I don't need this fix - but to get letterboxing on my third DVD player (PS2), the cookbook is a must. It is a bit involved, but does the trick. You need to change permissions before editing the files.
    I hope Apple fixes this!

  • Compressor 3.5.3 won't letterbox or remember saved Padding settings

I'm taking a screen capture out of ScreenFlow into Compressor 3.5.3 and I cannot get it to letterbox to 16 x 9. I'm not new to Compressor and have tried everything I can think of and done numerous searches searches with no success.
-Original Pro Res 422 file is at 1600x1000
-Inspector/Geometry tab is set to: Cropping- Custom, Dimensions- 640x360 Custom 16x9, Padding- Custom
(I've tried many times, but the Padding setting of 16x9 won't stay. I hit "Save", click on another preset, come back and it's returned to "Custom". This is likely connected to the problem, but re-booting the program doesn't help).
-Inspector/Filters tab: Letterbox- Type: Matte or Scale (neither works), Position- Center, Output- 16x9
(This doesn't work either. The settings do get saved, but no letterboxing.)
    -Inspector/Encoding tab: Use x264 encoder.
Am I missing something simple and obvious? I can easily export from QuickTime 7 or even from ScreenFlow directly and it works as it should. The reason I choose Compressor is simply to save my settings as a preset since they aren't retained in QT 7 when I create a different type of export.
I don't have to use Compressor. In theory, it's just to save me time, but after an hour and a half, it's faster just to jot down my settings and then re-input them into QT 7 to export with letterboxing.
    Thanks,
    Dave

    Russ,
I switched the Padding setting back to: "Preserve source aspect ratio" and it worked this time. It was probably the first thing I tried without success, but it's fine now.
I did notice that after numerous export tests that the final quality when viewed in Quicktime was slightly different when I used the padding vs. having the padding and Filter Letterbox settings both on. Oddly enough, it seemed a bit better when using both. This could just be a bit of randomness in that every single export will be of slightly different quality, but it is easy to see a difference when you take an exported screen capture at 640x360 and view in full screen mode. Anyway, I guess it's all working now.
    Thanks,
    Dave
P.S. I'll check back on this thread later in case you have anything to add.

  • Pages 'doc' exports won't load in Word 2011

    Help...
We work almost exclusively in Pages for text documents.  When we need to send them to people using MS Word we export as a DOC format.  Never had a problem until recently when we updated to Office 2011 (thanks to Lion not supporting Office 2004).
Now we find that some doc files exported from pages won't open in Word 2011 - but will open in NeoOffice, Word 2004 etc.  What is odder still is that if you save the problem doc in NeoOffice / Word 2004 it will then open fine in Word 2011.
When we try to open a problem file we get a dialogue like this...
This suggests that something in the Pages file created by the export process is annoying Word 2011, but not Word 2004 etc.
Anyone got any ideas what this might be - the MS help for this dialogue is useless (assumes for a start you are using Word on a Windows machine...).
    Thanks in advance...

    Hello,
As you are saying that PDFMaker add-in is simply not loading in the add-in list of MS word.
Please exit all programs, open MS Word and go to File> Options> Add-Ins.
Now, in the 'Manage' label on the bottom, choose COM Add-Ins and click go.
Then, look for Acrobat PDFMaker Office COM Add-In in the list.
If Acrobat PDFMaker Office COM Add-In appears in the list but the checkbox beside it is not selected, then click the checkbox. Click OK. Then close and reopen the Office 2013 application.
If Adobe PDFMaker COM Add-In is not in the list of available add-ins, then click Add and choose PDFMOfficeAddin.dll from "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 11\PDFMaker\Office". Click OK. Then close and reopen MS Word.
Please check and let me know.

  • Video stretched when exported even when "letterbox" is checked

Hi, I'm trying to export a lower quality version of one of my HD movies. I've previously been able to do this when I export using Quicktime Conversion at 640x480 with the "letterbox to preserve aspect ratio" option checked. However, I just did exactly that but when it is exported the video looks stretched and distorted and no letterbox bars appear on it. I've tried switching from H.264 to m-peg4 converter to see if that would make a difference but it is still exporting stretched videos. Why has this suddenly changed, and are there any fixes you know about?
    Thanks!
    Andrew

Try creating a new Project with the Sequence settings matching the footage correctly. Then copy/paste the the incorrect Sequence into the new matching Sequence.

  • SWF export won't include URL link?

To start off with I work for an agency, that, at present does not own Flash.
I've created a web banner in After Effects, and then imported the FLV file into InDesign. [With the dimensions 120x600]
But when I add a web hyperlink to a box [overlayed on 1% opacity], and then export to SWF, the video works fine in the web browser, but the hyperlink won't take me to the web address?
I've also tried converting the box into a button and this also, was unsuccesful.
Is there anyway of attaching a URL to a video? [other than putting it through Flash]
I appreciate any help or comments anyone has.
    Thank you.

Just as a test, did you put the hyperlink frame on its own layer?

  • Changed pixel size when exporting - won't go back default

I was exporting several photos one at a time and changes one the the dimensions. Now LR5 is applying that same pixel dimension to all exports. Does anyone know how to get LR to go back to defaulting (I guess) to each photos specific dimensions?

LR doesn’t have a magic hidden default that you somehow switched away from and now can’t change back to.  LR has various resizing options and you should be able to pick the same one you were using before.
By “different sizes” do you mean “different aspect ratios” – some more square some more rectangular, or do you mean different pixel dimensions—some 4000 pixels wide and some 800 pixels wide?
From what you say LR is telling you, if you are trying to keep your photos within a particular file-size yet they are too large of pixel dimensions and you don’t want to change the pixel dimensions, then it won’t work, which sounds like what your issue is.   When you tell LR to keep things within a particular filesize it reduces the quality down until it finds a filesize that is just less than the filesize limit you’ve indicated, or it has used the lowest quality setting and the file is still too big, which sounds like your situation.

  • Clips suddenly won't letterbox?

In my first widescreen project I've created several sequences. All clips appear in the Canvas in (letterboxed) widescreen aspect. I burned a test DVD and they played letterboxed on a full-screen TV without distortion, exactly as I had intended.
When I resumed work on the project today, every clip I moved to the Timeline showed in the Canvas in 4:3 aspect. The work I did previously remains unchanged. All those clips and sequences still show up letterboxed in the Canvas. But whatever I insert alongside them refuses to letterbox.
I'm still working from the same original clips. I haven't logged any new clips. In fact, I'm only using the same clips in different places. "Anamorphic" is checked in the Browser for all sequences and clips. "Fit To Window" and "Show As Sq. Pixels" is selected in the Canvas, same as always. I've trashed prefs, restarted, repaired permissions. Nada. Is there some simple setting I'm overlooking?

your DV anamorphic is a 'true' anamorphic.
What you might be asking is there anyway to have a true 16:9 timeline. The answer is not using most resonably editable formats.
What you may want to do if you shoot DV anamorphic is to edit the material on a timeline with the anamorphic preset. If you are going to dvd, simply export the file using current settings and use it to build a DVD. Just make sure DVDSP knows it is anamorphic footage. When played, most DVD players will automatically add the letterboxing.
If you have a very old dvd player that doesn't add letterboxing, in FCP create a 4:3 sequence and drop your anamorphic sequence into it. It should format as a letterbox then output that sequence and burn to dvd.
    cheers,
    x

  • LHi won't letterbox on CRT

First of all, anamorphic analog scaling works great on FCP.
I have a Kona LHi in my MacPro3,1.  I have the latest Adobe Plug-in installed.  My Sequence settings call for an anamorphic or letterbox display on my Analog out.
I don't get anything but a full-screen output on my analog CRT.  No matter what settings I use in the AJA Adobe plug inside Pr, or the AJA Control Panel app.
I can apply the proper setting in the AJA CP; then switch to Pr with the workspace size reduced so that I can see the AJA CP, and as soon as I activate Pr, the settings change, and the anamorphic setting is turned off.  It changes the Analog selection to Primary, which doesn't do letterboxing; that's only available to the secondary output.
This tells me that the AJA Plug in Pr isn't allowing the app to use the secondary output at all.  No matter what Secondary Format options I choose, they are ignored.
So... is this a Pr issue, or an AJA Adobe driver issue?

Hmm... wonder if your problem could be related to this?
Hardware MPE must be OFF to be able to export via Firewire

  • Exporting WITHOUT the Letterboxing - any advice please?

I'm shooting on a Sony Z1 using 'Squeeze' mode but when I export to a QuickTime from FCP I still have the letterboxing within picture.
Is there anyway I can avoid the letterboxing to produce and export a full video frame for web broadcast without cropping the picture?
    Thanks
    Simone

Yes, you can scale your HDV or DV to a smaller size using advanced setting in Compressor. Not sure why you are working with a down convert in Squeeze. I would work in the best quality (HDV) for as long as I could (keeping in mind the limits of HDV Long GOP) and then export to Compressor using a uncompressed codec and using a custom setting to the size a web file you want. Test small files and keep plenty of notes for each then burn to DVD if this is where you are going and see what works for you.
    Good Luck

  • AVi produced by PP media export won't play the video part on my Windows Media Player, Why?

It's basically it - So when I find my exported file in its folder and try to play it by double clicking on it,  My default player (WMP) all I get is the sound, It take quite a while before loading and then I get the usual white music note symbol on a bluish background and as the file is executed I only get the sound. But if I import it on my PP cs4 time line it's ok.

Thanks here too Jim. Does this then mean I have to use UYVY because this is the only other choice on the Settings window? Anyway I'll give it a try, and report. MM
Wow! I edit this to come back and say a big Thank You. not only it plays correctly but it seems tons faster to encode! I had no idea and left it to what seemed to be the default. What can i say! I wonder if I can change the Settings default to UYVY?

  • Export won't stop

I am using Lightroom 1.2 on an iMac G5 PC runnsing OS 10.4.10. Last night I put a long day's worth of photos into Lightroom, triaged them and started processing.
I found one that I wanted to export immediately so I could e-mail it to a relative and then get back to work on the others.
Instead of exporting the one photo, Lightroom started exporting everything I had just imported. I stopped the export, quit Lightroom, ran Cocktail (a utility to clean and repair caches and permissions), logged out, restarted the computer, logged back in. When I opened Lightroom again, the same thing happened: the program wants to export 209 pictures.
I will appreciate any suggestions of how to cure this glitch. After having used Lightroom since its Beta days, I guess I developed too much faith in it. So thanks for any help.

Interesting, I did not realize you could do that. Edit: responding to post #3
Like the others said, it is easy to have more files selected than you realize.
If you have the filmstrip activated there is a information line between the filmstrip and the main photo image that tells how many images are selected.
And when I was in develop and selected File/Export on the menu there was still a line at the bottom of the Export Dialog window (left of the Cancel and Export buttons) that says how many files will be exported.
