HD failed, access User folder urgent!

Hi everyone!
Here is my problem: system once froze after waking from sleep, rebooted it, never worked again. A forbiden sign appears when i rebooted it.
Things i tried:
- Snow leopard installation disk: disk utility reports bad sectors, cannot repair.
- Manage to create a partition and install ubuntu, can mount the drive but cannot see my folder inside Users\ ... So no access to my Desktop etc... old data. If i do it in the terminal as superuser i can see my user folder but once i try to access it, it gives a cannot access input\output error. I find it hard to belive that all my data is in bad sectors obviously...
- Disk utility alias in ubuntu also reports bad sectors.
- tried to use the terminal in the snow leopard installation cd but drive is not present in the Volumes\ ... can see Linux partition clearly though...
I now want to return the computer to Apple cuz it is not one year old yet!!! My first mac and so many troubles.... argh!
Any chance of recovering the data?
My bet would be some way of overriding protection and see the folder in linux.
OR
Maybe reinstall leopard, although probably it will ask for formatting the drive.
OR
Maybe apple can do it once i return it to repair... they should, a one yr old computer shouldn't give HD problems!!! :((
Thanks in advance for the help!
Cheers

If you don't have your data backed up elsewhere, it may be too late to do so now. The lesson to take from this experience is that you should back up when everything is working perfectly instead of waiting until the sky falls.
Don't take the computer to Apple to have the drive replaced under warranty until you've recovered any data that can be salvaged from it, as I describe below. If you take it to Apple now, Apple will remove the old drive and keep it, with all your data on it.
STOP installing things on the failed drive. If its directory is among the things on it that have been damaged, anything you write to the disk may irrevocably overwrite data that you hope to recover, but have been unable to access up to now. Instead of continuing to muck around with the drive and putting your data at further risk, download the free trial version of one or more of these data recovery utilities and let it show you what data, if any, is recoverable from the failed drive:
Data Rescue III
FileSalvage
VirtualLab
Do not install any of them on the failed drive. Install them on a bootable external hard drive large enough to hold all the data you hope to recover. If any of them indicates that it will be able to recover the files you need, buy the full version and use it to copy the files from the failed drive to the external. All data recovery utilities operate without changing anything on the drive from which the files are being recovered, so you know you can't be destroying any other information in the process. Good luck.

  • Access user folder over network

I have a new Mac Pro connected via ethernet to a early 2009 Mac Pro. I am able to connect them and share most data, but I can't get access to the contents of the folders in the remote home (user) folder.
All the permission are made to allow read and write privileges. I can navigate to the folders inside the remote user folder, but not the contents. I extended access permission to the entirety of the contents of the remote user folder.
All other folders and drives connected to the remote computer are accessible. It's just that pesky home folder I can't get into.
    Any ideas?
    Running 10.9.5 on both computers.

That worked, but I thought I had already done that as using the correct admin name was required in order for me to connect (for screen sharing anyway) in the first place when I initially began using this set up, and the correct name was autofilled. In any case, disconnecting and re-connecting did the trick. Thank you!

  • Can't access 'user' folder (greyed/grayed out)

I just got a new Macbook Pro Retina v10.9.3, I have had a Macbook Pro in the past.
I am trying to rename my Home folder and by doing so need to access the user folder.
Unfortunately it is greyed out and inaccessible.
I have full administrator controls. Any ideas?

    In Terminal, type:
    sudo chflags nohidden /Users
(or copy and paste it). You'll have to authenticate with your admin password, but it will "unhide" the Users folder.
    Good luck,

  • Find "Other" search fails when "User" folder selected - bug?

I have several partitions on my disk.
On my boot partition, I have 2 .aiff files in a sub-directory of my Documents folder. Using the Finder's "Find" command (not spotlight),
select search for File Type "other" and "AIFF Audio" from dropdown
select the "Users" folder as the only folder to search - "Find" shows no files
select only "Home" to search - finds them.
select both "Home" and "Users" to search it doesn't find them.
select the partition (Called "OSX") it finds them.
select partition "OSX", folder "Users" and "Home" - it finds them
also - I can get Finder to reset with double-click:
With a search that finds them, select the file so its path appears in the panel at the bottom of the window.
Modify the Find to search only "Users". The window clears and no files show, however the path of the previously selected file remains.
Double click on the path name, the Finder resets ( - in other words, quits, closing all open FInder windows, then restarts without reopening any of those Finder windows)
Is this a bug or what?

In short, try re-indexing your drive or home folder. You can do his by opening Preferences->Spotlight, select the Privacy tab. Add your hard drive or your home folder to the list by drag and drop or hit the plus symbol at the bottom. Wait a second and remove the drive or folder. It will take several hours for the drive or folder to re-index but the find/search command will start working correctly right away.
    Hope this helps.

  • Windows Authentication login cannot access backup files stored in Users\[User] folder.

I am currently logged in to my database engine using SSMS and Windows Authentication; specifically, I am logged in with Joe-PC\Joe, where Joe-PC is the domain name of the machine hosting the database, and Joe is the user that created the database.
If it matters, I am running all of this locally from Joe-PC.
I have a .bak backup file stored in my C:\Users\Joe\Desktop folder that I am trying to restore.  However, I get an error saying 'Either the location does not exist, or the current login account does not have access to it.'  I am certain the location
exists, as I am looking at it right now, and I can't see why Joe-PC\Joe wouldn't have access to it's own user folder.
I am absolutely baffled as to why this is behaving this way.  I am fully aware that I can work around the issue, but I'd like to know why this isn't working as it seems like it should.  Does the Windows Authentication that SQL Server uses not have
the permissions that the account would normally have?  Is the Windows Authentication user even the same thing as the user that logs into Windows?  What else could be going on that I don't understand?

    Keith
Thanks for your answer.  My user account is one of two administrator accounts on this computer (the other is only set up for consistency sake, and has probably only been logged into a total of 5 times; all of our computers have the account though, so
I thought I should put it on here as well).  The issue isn't that my account doesn't have restore permissions, just that SSMS can't access the user folder when logged in using Windows Authentication.  Another issue that I assume is related results
in a lack of permissions on backup files until I manually set permissions to 'Everyone' under the backup file's properties\security tab.  Also, not sure if it matters, the backup is taken from a customer's computer running Win 7 Pro x86 while my computer
is on Win 7 Ultimate x64.
Not sure if this helps pinpoint the issue, but my current workaround is as follows:
Copy the .bak file to the C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.WSA\MSSQL\Backup (default backup folder)
Right-click the .bak file and go to the properties toolbox.  Select the Security Tab, give full permission to 'Everyone'.
In SSMS, select 'Restore Database' after right-clicking on 'Databases' in left-hand tree.
Give the DB a name, restore from device, select my file.
This method hasn't failed me yet, but any deviation (other than setting permissions before or after moving) causes me to get access errors when I try to restore.  Fortunately, this isn't a production database engine, just a testing environment, but
I'd like to get an idea of what's going on, because I know it's only a matter of time before I or a customer runs into this issue.

How can I force Time Machine to make a complete backup of my Hard Drive.  I just installed a new external drive for Backup since my previous one failed.  Now when I back up, Time Machine only backs up my data folder and the Users folder.
When I start a backup. Time Machine says "Oldest Backup: None; Latest Backup: None", so it seems like it should do a complete backup, but it only does a partial.

  • How can I access my user folder on a second boot partition?

Hi there. Thank you for reading this. I am at a bit of a loss although I have searched several forums to find someone having the same problem:
I use my Macbook Pro in the office and at home. To keep things strictly apart and have to separate Time Machine backup procedures, I have divided my harddrive into two boot partitions ('office' and 'private') and installed Mountain Lion on both of them. Now occasionally when I am at the office I would like to access my  user folder on 'private' to retrieve a file from the documents folder there (e.g. a paper I gave in my free time but would like to send to a colleague). Now although I see the 'private' volume, and the other user folder and the Documents folder in it with a red 'No Access' badge, even when I  set read/write permissions via Command-I > Permissions for my current account, I do not see any files in it apart from Microsoft User Data. I have tried enabling the root user but with the sam result.
Do I really have to shut down the computer and boot with the 'private' boot volume in order to access the files on 'private'>user?
Looking forward to your suggestions! Thank you in advance!
    Christian

To solve this issue permanently, is to first disconnect both TimeMachine drives.
Boot into one partition and consider it history, make a note of everything, apps, export bookmarks, serial keys and files to a regular external drive. (non TimeMachine)
If on a hard drive, consider the first partition for performance, the second one is going to be slower. (SSD no need)
Next what you do is boot into the first partition and use Disk Utility to erase (with zero option if a hard drive) the other partition. Then use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the first partition to the second. (should be about equal sizes or tweak before cloning.)
Repair permissions on both partitions in Disk Utility.
Next boot into the second partition and install/uninstall apps and files. etc and set it backup up the way you had it.
Once your sure, then update TimeMachine for each one.
Now you will be able to easily access the other bootable partition as long as your logged into the same account name on the first partition., in other words you can access the same named account on both partitions and trade files without rebooting.
Because it's a clone, you have the same access privileges to the files on the other partition.
If your a power user, your going to find bootable clones are a much superior option than TimeMachine

  • Time Machine fails when trying to backup user folder

When I try to backup my OSX 10.6.7 MB Pro to either an USB-attached external disk or a time capsule the backup fails shortly after the scan run, leaving me with the message "The backup was not performed because an error occured while copying files to the backup disk." The scan run is taking quite some time (more than 300'000 objects),,
Only if I exclude my own user folder (respectively the ~) from backup the timemachine backup runs smoothly, but of course without my user data.
The MB has an SSD with 250 GB capacity of which 188 GB are used.
If you can assist in any way, many thanks to you!
    Kind regards

  • Non-SysAdmins get error 18456 Severity 14 State 11 Login Failed for user _ Reason Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error.

I have a SQL 2008 R2 system (10.50.4000) where I'm having problems connecting any user that is not a SysAdmin.  Example: I setup a new SQL Login to use Windows Authentication and grant that user db_datareader on the target database.  The user attempts
to connect using Excel client or Access or SQL Management Studio and receives Error 18456.  The SQL Server Logs shows Error 18456 Severity 14 State 11 Login Failed for user _ Reason Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error.
The strange part is that if I temporarily grant the user the sysadmin server role then the user can connect successfully and retrieve data.  But, if I take away that sysadmin server role then the user can no longer connect but again receives the Error
18456 Severity 14 State 11 Login Failed for user _ Reason Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error.
We've turned off UAC on the client machine to see if that was the problem, but no change.
I have dropped and re-added the user's SQL Login (and the related database user login info).  No success.
    The Ring Buffers output shows:
    The Calling API Name: LookupAccountSidInternal
    API Name: LookupAccountSid
    Error Code: 0x534
    Thanks for any help.
    -Walt

Yes, you understand correctly.  The user is logging onto a workstation (not the server) with a Windows Authenticated id.  The user is using either Excel or Access or SSMS and connecting to the server using a Windows Authenticated SQL Login account.
If the account has sysadmin role (which is only for testing) then the connection is successful.  If I take away sysadmin role from the account then the connection is unsuccessful and the SQL Server Log shows Error
18456 Severity 14 State 11 Login Failed for user _ Reason Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error.
(SQL Authentication is not an option here.  I must use Windows Authentication).
Any other troubleshooting assistance you can offer would be appreciated.  Thanks.

I need help on changing permission on "Everyone" group on "Users" folder to "No Access" using a Terminal command line.

You are running Oracle Linux and want to use a network volume provided by Windows 2008 to install Oracle Database.
Your problem is that you cannot set appropriate privileges on the mounted volume to perform the installation.
    Is this correct?
If yes, then as far as I know, Windows file sharing is not support, even if you fix the permission issues. Your problem is the file system, which won't be Linux ext3. NFS might be supported, but I think it is not the best idea. Have you looked into iSCSI? It will allow you to mount remote disks using SCSI protocol. You could do pretty much everything with such a mounted disk that you can do with a locally attached drive, including initializing, but instead of using the local bus, it will use the TCP/IP network.

The Saved Application State folder is where Lion stores all the information required for its resume feature to function as it does. As you are looking for a specific saved game folder it will not be in the Saved Application State folder. This folder was not present in Snow Leopard so wouldn't be present on your backup previous to the Lion install.
The game saves you're looking for will most likely be located in the Application Support or Preferences folder.
    Hope this helps

  • Windows users can't access shared folder - only see Library folder.

I created users folders with the same name as the user's login name. (Note: this is NOT a home folder. I have Home Folders shut off). When the Windows user logs in to access their folder, they don't see their files but instead a folder that says "Library".
When I log in with that user's account on my Mac, I can see the correct contents of their folder, but there is also a folder named "99". I found this "99" folder at the root of the server hard drive but every time I delete it, OS X recreates it again.
    I don't understand what's going on.

    Hi,
Whether you can able to ping the server when the server share is unresponsive?
Check for the events on the server for a clue. Try disabling the AV program for some time and check whether the problem is repeating.
