HD feed into OnLocation CS3 or CS4

Does anyone have any recommendation for a conversion tool to receive HD from a camera and pass into OnLocation through firewire? (My small camera only has an HDMI and an analog output, no firewire. I can convert the analog but prefer a digital signal since the analog would be re-converted to digital in the box I have. My current conversion box doesn't have an HDMI port.) Thanks.

  • Getting Media into Premiere CS3 Issue

I have several video sources. I have a Sony digital camcorder that produces MPG files that play well with Windows media player. I have a DVD recorder that I can user to convert my analogue videos to DVDs resulting in the usual VOB files. I have a standalone DVD burner that can do the same thing, accept analogue video input and and produce a finished DVD. I have a built in TV tuner with a VCR installed that allows me to input from video tape (VHS and VHSc).
I've used all of these sources to great success with Premiere Elements for a few years. In the summer I finally upgraded to Premiere Pro CS3 and I've had nothing but trouble since.
MPG files from my digital camcorder come into Premiere Pro without audio. When I sought support from Adobe the only answer I got was that I didn't set things up correctly, they didn't bother to say what might not be set up correctly. Interestingly, when I import exactly the same file into Encore I have a lovely audio track but a completely distorted video track. It seems that the two programs can't agree on what's wrong with an MPG file that plays perfectly in everything else including Permiere Elements.
VOB files that come from both of my DVD sources cannot be imported to Premeire at all. the import command doesn't even list them as a legitimate file. When I wrote Adobe for assistance I was simply told that Premiere Pro does not support VOB files even though they actually list these as legitimate files for import.
As to my TV tuner, Premiere does not recognise this as a device and nothing else that came with Premiere recognizes that device either. Asking for help was useless, I'm told the device is simply not supported.
Of course I had thought there might be a bug or something so I checked the updates and sure enough I ended up downloading 80 MB of updates but none of them fixed any of these isseus. There have been no updates since. I suspect there also won't be any more updates anyway since they've now announced CS4. Also in keeping with the bug question, I searched the literature and the knowledge base but nothing turned up a solution.
So ... I find myself with an allegedly advanced and sophisticated classy professional video editor but with nothing to feed into it since it refuses to accept any of the files and sources I have. At the same time when I was using what is a far more primitive consumer product I had no problems using all those sources. What gives?
To rub salt into the wounds even more, Adobe now says that it will only support CS4. Well I'm not going to upgrade something I've had for four months that refuses to work for me to begin with. And Adobe has not said that my problems would go away with an upgrade anyway so why even consider that risk? But that means as well that now I'm really stuck.
Any suggsetions on how I can get my video sources into Premiere so that I can finally use this editor?

Premiere Elements is remarkably functional especially considering its cost. But of course if it was really outstanding there'd be no reason to buy PPCS3. While it has a lot of functionality, there are arbitrary limits to most of the functions that forces you into the more expensive product if you want to do more than just play around.
Having said that though, what baffles me endlessly is that it is reasonable to assume that the more expensive product, that alleges professional capabilities, has all the functionality of Elements and more. That's how it works going from Photoshop Elements to Photoshop CS3. But clearly that is not to be. What baffles me too is that I fail to see the advantage of having an editor that does not have the capability to accept material to edit.
I have a workaround by using Premiere Elements to prepare the files for import and then getting them into PP. Alas that's time consuming and should not be necessary. However all is not lost at least it works. Perhaps some day Adobe will advertise in bold healdines that it has an awesome video editor that can actually import video material without having to first convert it using a consumer product. And no doubt they'll flog that as an incredible advance in video editing.
This has made me aware of Adobe's attitudes towards it's user's needs and frustrations. As a result I've payed a lot more attention to the actual functionality of Adobe products and I now check this against competing products. There's no way I will own their entire creative suite now or ever. A case in point was their Sound Booth, an allegedly easier audio editor for those of us who are not into audio. Well, the way it maintains its simplicity is to allow you only one sound track. The new release, CS4 finally allows more than one track and of course Adobe flogs that as an amazing advance. Well it isn't, I've got a ten year old sudio editor that's been doing that and a lot more ten years ago.
I've learned now that just because they have a world leader in a product like Photoshop, it does not follow that they are even half as good when it comes to other components. So with the exception of the few Adobe products I do own, I'm avoiding them for my other needs. It seems that competitive products are not as arrogant and tend to provide the needed tools. The also tend to listen to their users a lot mroe as well.
Thankfully too I've learned this lesson quickly enough before I upgraded Photoshop too. The CS3 version works just fine. The new version (CS4) no longer has an online Help, you have to sign on to the Internet, and a few other functions like PDF presentations have been removed too. There was the odd new goodie added too but only the odd one and none justifies upgrading considering that the things removed are actually functions I use. This too I've discovered in the past couple of years, Adobe does give you new functionality but often at the cost of functions removed. So one needs to be vigilent even when considering an upgrade. They don't tell you what they remove, they only try to seduce you with new things they've added.
If there is a better product to PPCS3 please let me know and I'll drop the Adobe product completely. In fact I'd be happy to know about any product that is an improvement over Adobe products. In the meantme though, I've got my PP working and I'm staying with CS3 for both that and Photoshop too. Thanks for your thoughts.
    Do have a super day

  • MXF clips do not open in CS3 of CS4 (windows vista ultimate)

I have Sony DXCAM's MXF's which I can not import in Premiere (neither CS3 nor CS4). I did convert the original MXF's using Sony's DXCAM software.
Adobe claims it supports MXF files. Another editing company which uses CS3 can import XMF's using a Windows XP machine. I work on Vista Ultimate.
I have an itch that I am missing a vital codec of somekind, but I can not find out why my copies of CS3 and CS4 of Premiere Pro do not allow me to import MXF files. From within the Media browser in CS4 it results in the same disappointing result. It doesn't open.
When I tried to open one MXF file in CS3 the program crashes and forces me to close it. In CS4 I get an error message after importing which reads; "Unsupported format or damaged file."
Any help is very much appreciated, as I need to start my editing ASAP>
    Thx!
    Jan.

    Hi Jim,
Thanks for your feedback. The first thing I tried was to import the MXF packages (I don't see lone MP4's) into Premiere. That did not work. So I exported the MXF files using Sony's U1 player/recorder.
I think its a Vista and/or codec problem, as my friend who workes on an XP machine is able to open MXF's in CS3.

  • Do paragraph style overrides work differently in CS3 vs CS4?

    Hi All-
I’m in the process of moving a workflow from CS3 to CS4, and have run into an unexpected problem. In the existing CS3 workflow, we receive copyedited text with Word paragraph styles applied, then import this text into our InDesign template. This template has all the same paragraph style names as the Word file, so we tell InDesign to use the InDesign style definitions in the Import options. So, for instance, the Word style for Para_Text is Times New Roman 12pt, and the InDesign style for Para_Text is Helvetica Neue 8pt, and on Import InDesign automatically changes it to Helvetica Neue 8pt. This is as we want it.
Things fall apart, however, when we import the same text into the same template in InDesign CS4. It still applies the InDesign style definition, but has additional overrides to make it look like the Word style definition. So, it recognizes that the underlying paragraph style should be Helvetica Neue 8pt, but it then preserves Times New Roman 12pt as an override. If I select the text and do Clear Overrides, it’ll revert to the Helvetica Neue 8pt we want it in, but for other reasons that solution is less than ideal.
I think I can come up with a rather kludgy way around this, but I’m trying to understand exactly why we’re getting the different behavior in CS4. It seems like paragraph style conflicts are being handled in a different way in CS3 than CS4 – in CS3, if the InDesign paragraph style specifically spelled out a font, that would dominate on import; now, in CS4, it’s allowing the Word paragraph style to seep through as an override. Any thoughts as to why this is happening?
    Thanks,
    -Nate

    Hi Chris.
Good news. I cant tell you how happy i am for all your help ;-) and you other guys.

My Photoshop CS3 and CS4 keeps crashing on me after a wile of work ???
I tried everything. Deleted preffs etc. etc.
It have been working for long long time but suddenly it keeps crashing all the time.
I tried to remove some new plug-ins, but it was not that.
Only thing i did also was to install new ram.
Upgraded from 10GB to 14GB in all our Mac Pro.
So after i tried to switch the ram around to check if some was bad.
Also run some memory software but everything came out right.
So now the only thing left is that Photoshop dosent like ram between 14GB & 16GB.
Under was fine and i never tried over 16 gigs.. weird
Any ide what could corse this ?

  • PDF from Powerpoint on Mac will not place in CS3 or CS4

Got a customer supplied PDF generated on a Mac from the latest version of Powerpoint using the Mac Quartz engine. I can not place it in either CS3 or CS4 InDesign, but it will place in CS and CS2. Problems placing it there as well. The PDF contains a smooth shaded background that turns into a black box in the upper left hand conner. If I open the PDF in Acrobat 6 or 7 it also previews incorrectly. Opening in Acrobat 8 or 9 it previews correctly. If I have the customer send a postscript file and I distill it using PDF/A-1b:2005 (RGB) or (CMYK) it seems to work, well at lest I can place it in all versions of InDesign. The problem now is if I export to PDF after placing it reverts back to the black box in the upper right hand conner. Another issue is writing postscript flattens all the transparent objects in the PDF, something I'd rather not do. BTW if I try to use any other PDF setting in Distiller the program quits. Is this a known issue?

Yes here is the report. Odd that it previews OK in Acrobat 9 tho and not in Acrobat 6 or 7, the two Acrobats that I use, because thats the version I have Pit Stop for. I know I should update Pit Stop but as it is we are lucky to still be open at all with the lack of work here, and can't afford to upgrade anything. I did get these to work but it was a real nightmare and took lots of time.

  • Importing Actions from PS-CS3 to CS4

I recently upgraded from Photoshop CS3 to CS4
I tried to import the "Actions" I used in CS3 into CS4, but they didn't work.
Is there a converter or something?  Anyway to get those actions into CS4 without re-recording them?
    Thanks,
    --PS

    Ah,  restart the program!
I just loaded my actions set from wherever they're stored on my hard drive - a directory somewhere for Photoshop stuff.
Restarted PS-CS4 and... voila, actions work.  Didn't think I needed to do that.
    Love simple solutions.
    Thanks,

  • Dreamweaver CS3 to CS4 Changes

Changes in Dreamwever CS3 to CS4
Creating a text box over a photo.
I have been using a technique in CS3 learned from
    "totaltraining.com"
I could take a photo into photoshop and slice it into areas
where I want to create a text block and use the photoshop save to
web application to write the html code and create the images. then
I open the html file in Dreamweaver CS3 and select the sliced block
image that I want to add text on top of and copy the link
information, Then Delete the image and add the hight measurement to
keep the space from shifting then paste the link information into
the box background in the control pallet at the bottom. Then insert
text on top of the background image. This gives me the ability to
use the page properties to add a over all background color or image
and still have a text box with the photo behind it.
The problem is that with new Dreamweaver CS4 I can not find
where to paste the link information. The control pallet has changed
and I can not find out how to add the image back into the cell as a
background. I have tried to just place the image into the cell but
    everything shifts.
I know their is probably a better way to do this I am just
learning and trying to figure this out so any advice would be
    helpful.
I would just use Dreamweaver3 but the demo I was working on
expired and I bought the CS4 package.
I have a website 80% finished and now I'm stuck.
    Thanks, Curtis

Things that you 'used to be able to do but cannot in CS4' are
    generally
things that you should never have done in the first place. A
    big thrust of
CS4 is to remove things from DW that created invalid or
    non-best practice
HTML. This method certainly sounds like a good candidate -
    for example:
    > use the photoshop save to web application to write the
    > html code
This is a very bad idea. Such code is fragile beyond
    expectation. One
should only use a graphics app to write HTML that is to be
    used for
    prototyping, not for production.
    > Then Delete the image and add the hight measurement to
    > keep the space from shifting
This is a very bad idea. Placing text into a region that is
    vertically
constrained is like placing a timebomb in your code. What
    happens with the
visitor makes the text larger to read more comfortably?
    Blammo....
    > Then insert text on top of the background image.
Bad idea for the same reason.
    > The problem is that with new Dreamweaver CS4 I can not
    find where to paste
    > the
    > link information. The control pallet has changed and I
    can not find out

There are now two buttons on the Property inspector: HTML and
    CSS. Click
    the HTML one.
    > I have tried to just place the image into the cell but
    everything shifts.
Which is why you should never use "wizard" HTML.
    > I know their is probably a better way to do this I am
    just learning and
    > trying
    > to figure this out so any advice would be helpful.
Really? OK - just put DW down and go here -
    http://www.w3schools.com - to
learn HTML and CSS. When you can understand this -
    http://apptools.com/examples/pagelayout101.php
then you will be ready to come back to DW. Trying to use DW
    without a fair
understanding of HTML and CSS is like being beat with a
    broomstick!

  • Flash CS3 or CS4 Developer Certification

    Hi,
I am a flash developer, I am looking for Flash Developer certification in CS3 or CS4 but Adobe still don't have any certification for Flash Developer.
Only Flash CS3 certification are there in Adobe. If Any one know When Adobe Planning to release Flash Developer certification please add that
details  in this Forums or If you know any mail id for Adobe certification preparation team also please let know. Thanks

Adobe hasn't in the past broken the Flash certification down into Developer v Designer.  Adobe only puts an ACE certification on Flash as a whole, with every part of the IDE, including scripting, in the exam.
It looks like they haven't completed a CS4 Flash ACE exam yet, so the only one available is the Flash CS3 ACE.
    http://partners.adobe.com/public/ace/main.html
There are, however, specialist certification groups that you can go for, which require passing multiple exams.
    http://www.adobe.com/support/certification/ace_certify.html
Look under the two expandable items (designated by "+ Products available for proficiency")

  • CS3 and CS4 on OXS10.6 and later

I need to upgrade my Mac OS from 10.5.8 via 10.6 to 10.9 .I have both CS3 and CS4 running and want to check that they will both work on the new OS...?

    Brad Lawryk wrote:
I just re-read your original post.
Did you upgrade your CS3 to CS4 or purchase the complete CS4 package?
If you bought the upgrade, I do not think you can run CS3 and CS4 on the same machine because it will make CS3 into CS4 and remove CS3.
Not correct: it does not "remove CS3". Each upgrade is in fact a complete installation in its own folder structure.
Obviously you can't have both running at the same time, but a lot of people keep at least one previous version installed.

  • Have CS3 and CS4, removed CS3, now no ID files will open

I had both InDesign CS3 and CS4 installed.  By default when I would open an ID file, it would always open in CS4.  I forgot CS3 was on there so I uninstalled it and restarted the computer.  Now nothing starts in Indesign at all unless i actually open it with Indesign.  Also all the ID files no longer have the pink icon, its just a while square.  Is there a way to reset this?  I dont see a repair option in the ID setup anywhere.

Platform? Windows or Mac? OS Version? If you are on the mac you could probably get that resolved pretty easy with RC Default Apps
    http://www.rubicode.com/Software/RCDefaultApp/
I'd think if you didn't want to go that route you could just open CS4 InDesign, make a new doc, save it and it should get an icon. Right click that badboy and hold option to choose always open with. Toss a logout or restart into the machine and it should work for you. That RC Default apps is a real jewel though.
If you still get issues maybe see if JoJo cures it. It's nice if you have multiple versions of ID or Quack XPress.

JoJo is payware but everythere that guy makes has been worth it if you need it. Rubicode's Default Apps is free.

  • OnLocation CS3 Trial will not open

I downloaded the 30 day trial of OnLocation CS3 from the Adobe Website v3.0.1101.0).  It installed fine.  When I launch it, the splash screen comes up and then the license screen comes up.  When I hit ACCEPT, the license screen closes and then the splash screen vanishes.  The program will not open.  Any idease?
I have windows XP Pro SP2
    AMD Athlon 64 FX57
    ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard
    4 gig Corsair TwinX PC3500
Dual Nvidia Geforce 7800 GTX (SLI)
    Soudblaster Audigy 2ZS Platinum Pro

I'm not sure what's up with the CS3 trial, but since that version of the product is no longer available I recommend installing the CS4 trial (it's bundled with the Premiere Pro installer)

  • CS3 and CS4 Crashes (Open, Save, Randomly)

We have some users at my company that for sometime now have been having issues with all CS3 and CS4 products crashing when doing any sort of work. As the title states, the crashes were on opening, saving, sometimes randomly as well, and even renders in AE would fail.
After many trials and tribulations we finally got an error message that pointed us to something credible. The error message was "After Effects warning: GDI+ not intialized.", this happened on import of .psd file as a composition into AE. I found a thread on some Developers who were expierencing this error in their own programs, and Visual Studio.
    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/winforms/thread/931580d9-78ff-45d3-949b-0cf6 67d63e48/
This pointed to Turtoise CVS 1.10.1, which convientently we had installed on all our workstations. We updated to the latest version Turtoise CVS (1.10.10) and all of our troubles have gone away. Went from upto a half dozen crashes a day to zero, and even any issues we had with rendering went away.
I am posting this as it took awhile to find the cause of the crashing, and hope that it will helps someone else that this issue has frustrated.
Note: CS2 ran fine with Turtoise CVS 1.10.1

    Thanks for the post.

  • Same clip, different lengths in CS3 and CS4?

I'm trying to fix a problem I'm having importing my CS3 project into CS4 and I noticed that the clip lengths in the properties windows do not match for my files. For example, if I open my clip in CS3 (where it was originally edited) it shows it this:
    File Path: F:TapesTape 24Scene 018 - Ally & Paul Coffee (9).m2t
    Type: MPEG Movie
    File Size: 365.4 MB
    Image Size: 1440 x 1080
    Pixel Depth: 1440
    Frame Rate: 29.97
Source Audio Format: 48000 Hz - compressed - Stereo
Project Audio Format: 48000 Hz - 32 bit floating point - Stereo
    Total Duration: 00;01;54;14
Average Data Rate: 3.2 MB / second
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.333
But in CS4 the properties show up as this:
    File Path: F:TapesTape 24Scene 018 - Ally & Paul Coffee (9).m2t
    Type: MPEG Movie
    File Size: 365.4 MB
    Image Size: 1440 x 1080
    Pixel Depth: 32
    Frame Rate: 29.97
Source Audio Format: 48000 Hz - compressed - Stereo
Project Audio Format: 48000 Hz - 32 bit floating point - Stereo
    Total Duration: 00;01;53;08
Average Data Rate: 3.2 MB / second
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.3333
What would cause this discrepancy? I shot at 30f on a Canon XH-A1. My project settings in CS4 are HDV 1080p30. Do I have the wrong settings? How could the same clip be of two different lengths. I'm so confused!
Please respond only if you have a suggestion. I am not looking for comments about how I shouldn't switch programs midstream. I would like some honest help, however!
    Thanks!

    I've got a couple suggestions.
First would be to see if its a problem with the import or a just a difference in how CS3 and CS4 reads the files. If you import one of .m2t files directly into CS4 and not through importing the project, does it give you the same info as you listed above? (I'm assuming the file info above was derived from importing the project and then looking at the file's info.) If it is correct when independently brought into premiere, then the problem lies with importing a CS3 project and I would suggest trying to unlink then link your media. If there is no difference, then it's something else.
Second suggestion is to export an EDL out of CS3. Then, instead of importing your CS3 project into CS4, import the EDL and see if this resolves your edit points.
One note I've noticed with the EDL's in premiere, they don't import well when generated in framecount mode, but work fine in timecode mode (in CS3 this is just what your timeline time indicator mode is set at, right click the time indicator and set it to Timecode. in CS4 this doesn't work and you have to set the Display Format to Timecode under your Project Settings.)
    Good luck.

  • CS3 and CS4 on same comuter

    Hello all,
I have CS3 production premium suite on my laptop.  I upgraded to CS4 production premium suite.  I have to keep CS3 on my computer befause I have certain plug ins for Premiere that won't work in Premiere CS4 (cineform prospect hd and Procoder 3).
The problem is that my Adobe bridge no longer responds in PS CS3.  Adobe Bridge does work in PS CS4.
Can I get it to work in both?
    Thanks

If you bought the upgrade, I do not think you can run CS3 and CS4 on the same machine because it will make CS3 into CS4 and remove CS3.
Not correct: it does not "remove CS3". Each upgrade is in fact a complete installation in its own folder structure.
Obviously you can't have both running at the same time, but a lot of people keep at least one previous version installed.

  • Premiere CS3 and CS4 Crashes

I'm having trouble with Premiere Pro versions CS3 and CS4 crashing and am not sure why. The problem usually occurs after a few minutes of the program being opened or when we either try to scrub through the timeline or try to capture. It's very frustrating.  The machine came installed with CS4 and we have tried to remove and then re-install. We have also tried removing and adding CS3 and have had similar results. Recently we purchased a school license for CS5 although for Premiere we had to install the CS4 version and still have gotten the same results. This was working fine for quite sometime and I can't come up with a resolution to what is causing the problem. Can anyone offer any advice or suggestions on what to look into correct the problem?
