HD footage on a standard DVD?

I used FCP5 and edited a 1:30 sec trial piece all in HD (1080i). I used Compressor and choose the DVD Best Quality 90 Minutes setting. In DVD Studio Pro 4, I had the setting on letter box. When I played it in the simulator it looked great.
I burned the DVD and tried it in a DVD player on my TV. The video was really jumpy. By jumpy I mean as the camera panned everything flashed in a sense. It was actually hard on the eyes.
What settings do I need to be using throughout this process to take HD footage and burn it onto a DVD that non-HD TVs can use? Thanks in advance!

It's hard to know for certain without actually seeing what "flashed in a sense" really means, but this may be a field dominance problem. This seems to be a common issue when converting from HD to SD. Try making two difference versions of your video, one with lower/bottom field dominant and the other with upper/top field. Or, if you know for certain what you used previously try switching to the other setting.<small><hr width="75%"><small>If this suggestion helps in any way, a confirmation or acknowledgment would be appreciated, since that would also help others who may be having the same difficulty. How to create a standard DVD from HD video footage

Hi everyone, apologies in advance if my question has no doubt been asked before. This is my first post and I am desperate for some guidance. I’ve scanned previous questions on similar topics and haven’t quite found the same query (or had the confidence to spot if it was the same problem!). Here goes.
My son recently videoed a family wedding using a:
1. SONY FX7 Camcorder.
2. In HD108i
3. Using mini DV tapes
4. The video included video footage, it incorporated single pictures from another camera and has a musical score in the background.
5. My son used Final Cut Pro to edit the film
6. The finished film is stored on the main memory of his MAC Book Pro and also on a separate external hard drive. At preent it can only be viewed using his MAC linked to the TV directly.
7. The memory used is…wait for it….20GB!
While the quality is first class we are clearly struggling to copy it on to a standard DVD that our relative can pop into their ordinary DVD player. I appreciate that the quality may well suffer if we can do this, but I cannot see any other way of getting copies of the video to those who attended in a friendly format. We will keep the master copy in its original format though.
Assuming that it can be done, would someone please advise me on the procedure? I would be most grateful. I’ve tried Apple technical support, but I might as well be asking for the whereabouts of the lost ark!

Simple answer: Open iDVD and import the finished movie into it. Let iDVD take care of the DVD encoding for you, choose one of the wedding templates for your menu and burn it.
More complicated answer: Open the manuals for Compressor and DVD Studio Pro and learn how to use those tools to author DVDs.
The 20GB of disk space is completely normal for HDV.
It tells me that your movie is about 100 minutes long. Video takes a lot of space. Hard drives are cheaper than they have ever been.

In fxp x export settings i can see the "dvd" setting but i need to use toast because i need to add a few projects and that seems to only allow what project you are currently in.
Client does not have blu ray so I have to go to standard dvds.
I am using toast. I know how to use toast but I want ffedback on how I should export from FCPx for a standard dvd burnout.

You're right I tried a few different exports with varying file sizes. My thinking was it was better to have a lower file size going into the DVD. Of course you are the expert so I value your input. It's just that I have two of these files I need to send out to DVD and for both seminars there going to be under 50 GB that seems like a lot of space to take up on my storage. My assumption was that was way too big of a file and I should have a smaller file size to be able to go into the DVD any further info or articles would be appreciated. Thanks Tim
Is there any readings on best export settings for certain type projects? It seems pretty cut and dry I just assumed I would get smaller file sizes during the export.. Just trying to understand it all.

Premiere Elements 12 -Only buring HD but really want standard DVD

My video project is made up of HD video footage; however, I need to burn to Standard DVD for distribution to a number of volunteers who are featured.
I have chosen DVD - Disc (both wide and standard) -- each time the video comes out in HD and will not play on standard DVD players or in the non-Blu Ray burner on my computers. I see no options in Premiere Elements 12 to override burning in HD.
I've never had the problem with previous videos using same software and computer. Although those were a different selection of blank DVDs.
Is there a solution or is it possible that I purchased blank Blu Ray DVDs instead of standard. There is no labeling left on my DVD stack of 100 (also nothing on individual discs) although the center ring is surrounded by a blue ring.
Is there any other way to tell if they are Blu Ray and not standard DVDs?

There appears to be a basic misunderstanding here of the burn to options in Premiere Elements 12 in particular.
Please allow me to explain, and please excuse anything that I will write that you already know....
The regular DVD player will playback DVD-VIDEO Standard (4:3) or (16:9). Assuming a NTSC setup, that is characterized by
720 x 480 4:3 @ 29.97 interlaced frames per second and 720 x 480 16:9 @ 29.97 interlaced frames per second. When these are
the choices that you want, you use
Publish+Share
Disc
DVD
disc with Presets = NTSC_Dolby Digital (for the 4:3) and NTSC_Widescreen_Dolby DVD (16:9)
You do not use
Publish+Share
Disc
AVCHD disc (which is a HD AVCHD format on a DVD disc....this will not playback on the regular DVD player....here you can expect
resolution of 1920 x 1080)
The only possibility for you obtaining what you say relate to you selecting AVCHD instead of DVD. Is that a possibility?
There is no Blu-ray DVD disc or ACVHD DVD disc; there is Blu-ray disc format on a Blu-ray disc, AvCHD format on a DVD disc, each differing from DVD-VIDEO format on a DVD disc.
As for DVD discs, 4.7 GB/120 minutes; 8.5 GB/240 minutes.
As for Blu-ray discs, 25 GB or 50 GB.
If you have a HD 16:9 project and you want to take it to a DVD disc that will playback on the regular DVD player, then you use
Publish+Share
Disc
DVD
disc with a preset specifically for NTSC_Widescreen_Dolby DVD which is 16:9.

How do I best compress a multi file project in Encore CS5 to fit a standard DVD?

I have created a series of small films in Final Cut Pro X, they have been exported as seperate audio and video tracks, ac3 audio and mpeg video from the presets in FCPX.
I want to use Encore CS5 to create DVDs out of them and I have used it before but only know the basics. The problem is that after I import all the media files, that I want on the first DVD, as assets and put them on the timeline it adds up to 7.23 GB, even though the time is just under 2 hours. I know that that might be pushing it a little bit in regards to the amount of time that I can fit on a regular 4.7 GB DVD, but it should't take up that much space. I removed a bunch of files from the timeline to see what I could fit and only got just under 1 hour. I can see that it is possible to decrease the file sizes, for instance by going to 'file'-'edit quality presets' and doing stuff there, but 'm not sure of the best way to do that.
In other posts I have seen mentions of encore compressing files to fit automatically, but what i want is a way to fit all the video files, not the audio i guess, to a dvd with minimum quality loss. does anyone know the best way to do this?
the only thing i can think off is either to use more DVDs than I feel that I should have to, or to burn a 7.23 GB image and then shrink that using soomething like DVD shrink, but that seems unecessary.
So I have a feeling that there is a smart way to do this and would appreciate any help.

Firstly: John, if I export as a .mov and then import to Encore and transcode there will that mean that the file will be shrunk with minimum quality loss? because the .mov file i get using a simple movie export is massive.
below follows my findings and more questions. I suppose I should maybe be moving over to a FCPX & Compressor 4 forum. I think I need to do some studies on Bitrate here.
I tried the option of automatic transcoding in Encore to fit all files on a DVD and the results weren't terrible, in fact they are almost good enough, but not quite. it's sequences with fast movement that really are affected. So Stan, not much difference.
the problem is that the footage i am working with is pretty poor quality to start with. I am working with a bunch of Super 8 family films that have been scanned on to DVDs.
In FCPX a film that is 32 Min Pal SD 25p surround sound keeps coming out way to big. Below are some examples:
-When I export directly from FCPX as a movie (.mov) with the simple export settings and 'keep current settings' the file ends up being a massive 11.16 GB! With all other setting options the file is also expected to be very big ranging from something like 2.3 GB to 23GB.
-When I send it to Compressor 4 and choose the 'SD video sharing' option for uploading online it ends up at 1 GB. These are the settings and summary:

well thanks for the help both of you. it seems that outputting way too big files might be one of the many annoying bugs of FCPX.

Using H264 for standard DVDs?

Is it possible to use the H264 compression codec to create mpeg2 files for use on a standard DVD? What I mean is, if I use this codec to compress my quicktime files to mpeg2, will the finished DVDs play on a standard DVD player or will they need to be played on an HD DVD player?
The source footage is standard definition DV (720 x 480). I just want to use the new H264 codec because I'm trying to squeeze as much footage as possible onto one DVD-9. Please let me know if anyone has experimented with this.

Doesn't work that way. MPEG2/MPEG1 and H.264 are different encoders and a standard DVD player can not process H.264 video. For that matter, there aren't any commercially available HD DVD players available yet so H.264 is pretty much limited to playback on computers.

Audio goes in and out of sync when burned dvd played on standard DVD player

I made a short film recently (7:00 mins) and once completed and burned to DVD using iDVD and DVD Studio Pro about 20% of the clips have out of sync audio. Just slightly out of sync. Some more noticeable than others.
Playing off the timeline syncs perfect, the exported prores 422 mov file syncs perfectly, and if the finished DVD is played on my mac or my pc the sync is perfect, but when played on a standard dvd player to my TV I get the syncing problem, but only at certain points through the film. As I said, about 20% of it. The rest of the film is fine.
Shot on Canon 5d mkII - footage converted to prores 422 1920x1080. Audio recorded on Zoom H4N with some ADR recorded on logic pro. Audio synced manually using clapper board reference. Using a 27'iMac with current OSX update as of 14 March 2011. Edited in FCP 7, exported to proress 422, burned to DVD with current iDVD and DVD Studio Pro, all current versions and updates.
I have tried exporting to mpg4 and mpg2 - no joy. I checked audio bit rates and discovered the logic recorded stuff was 44.1khz as opposed to 48, so I converted to 48 but still no fix.
I am STUMPPED

Should I convert just the clips which are out of sync in the DVD, or all of theclips in the FCP timeline?
If that is the issue, wouldn't I have the problem in the final prores mov as opposed to just when its played dvd to tv?
Ill try it though. Its an odd problem so its likely to have an odd solution. Willing to try anything at this point.

How downsize a 112 GB .mov file in DVDSP to fit standard DVD?

Help, please. I burned a Quicktime .mov file from HD footage off my FCP 7 timeline. The resulting file is 112 GBs. I took it into DVD Studio Pro as I thought DVDSP would downsize the file to fit on a standard DVD. But the Disc Meter shows the size to be 6.2GB. I went into Preferences to lower the bit rate, but it had no effect on the size. It is still 6.2GB.
Is there a place in DVDSP to adjust the setting to fit the file so DVDSP will burn it? Or will I have to first take it through Compressor?

I did a test, and I think it would be very helpful for all of us if anybody else could reply to this with their experience/comments.
I started with an hour long project in HD. Then did the following:
1. Dragged HD sequence from Browser into an SD timeline. Rendered. Exported video (in this case, just a short 1 minute clip for testing). Burned this clip to SD DVD via iDVD.
2. In original HD sequence I exported a short 1 minute clip. Dragged this clip into Compressor with DVD settings. Let it process and then burn to DVD from within Compressor.
RESULTS: ON SD TV: There is not much of a difference in quality (at least not on a typical 20-some inch TV), HOWEVER, on an HD TV, the Compressor version (#2 above) looks far better than version #1 above. When viewing the video on an HD TV, the video from version #1 is virtually unusable. I would not even give it to a client. Image quality is very bad. Version #2 still looks not very good but it is far better than the other.
I have not tried using DVD SP pro yet to see if there is any difference.

Anyone out there taking AVCHD Footage into Final Cut Studio? Do you take your HD Footage and burn it to a Standard DVD in AVCHD format? What's your workflow? I can't seem to make a good disk!!

Exporting an HD movie to Standard DVD, best format?

I've been editing for awhile but just made the switch to an HD camera (Canon XH A1). I imported footage (as HD footage) and edited it in FCP, now I wonder how I should export it. I did it using "current settings" and it would only go into DVD Studio Pro as an HD project. It was shot at 24p, what's the best way to export it for standard DVD use? I'm just not sure what settings to use...

The absolute simplest way to make a DVD using FCP and DVDSP is as follows:
1. Export a QT movie, either a reference file or self contained using current settings.
2. Open DVDSP, select the "graphical" tab and you will see two little monitors, one blue, one green.
3. Select the left blue one and hit delete.
4. Now, select the green one, right click on it amd select the top option "first play".
5. Now drag your QT from the broswer and drop it on top of the green monitor.
6. Now, for a DVD from an HD source, look to the right side and select the "general tab" in the track editor, and see the Display Mode, and select "16:9 pan-scan."
7. Hit the little black and yellow burn icon at the top of the page and put a a DVD in when prompted. DVDSP will encode and burn your new DVD.
THATS ALL!!!
NOW...if you want a GOOD LOOKING DVD, instead of taking your REF movie into DVD SP, instead take it into Compressor and choose the BEST QUALITY ENCODE (2 pass VBR) that matches your show timing. Then take THAT result into DVD SP and follow the rest of the steps. Except you can choose "16:9 LETTERBOX" instead of PAN & SCAN if you want to see the entire image.

Problem getting HD video to play properly on standard DVD - dropping frames

Maybe someone can tell me the proper workflow I should be using here, but for the life of me can not get my beautiful HD video to play properly on standard DVD's. Footage looks choppy, ie dropping frames.
1.) I've tried editing in iMovie 08', exporting to a 720P Quicktime file (original is 1080p), then loading into iDVD as well as Toast 8. Both play in my standard DVD player like crap (almost like a strobe light is being applied).
2.) I have also loaded the source footage into Toast 8 directly and it also looks choppy.
My source are .mov files loaded from my Panasonic HDC-SD5 into iMovie 08 for editing.
If anyone can tell me what kind of a workflow I need to do in order to get my video onto a standard dvd and play properly, I'd love to hear it.

I think the problem here is a format mixup (I'm no codec pro though)

From what I know AVCHD (the recording format of the HDC-SD5) can be either 1080i or 720p, so my guess is that you shot and edited in 1080i then exported to 720p. The p stands for progressive and, IMHO, that is where the strobe effect comes from.
To go from an interlaced format to progressive (p) you'll need to de-interlace, and that needs some smart software (and skill to find the right settings). On top of that, your source is a highly compressed flavor of MPEG-4, which you're converting to progressive HD.
Why not edit in AVCHD and send the project directly to iDVD?

My dvds that are made from iDVD will not play in a standard dvd player. Can anyone help me?*

I am running iDVD v 7.1.2(1158). I used to be able to make dvds that would play in a standard dvd player. As of today I cannot. I do not know what has changed and I do not know what needs to be updated. Can someone assist me?
The dvds that I can make will play from a disk image and they can play perfectly fine in a computer but not in a standard dvd player. I am using an external dvd burner, (The same one have always used) to create the dvds. I am using iDVD to author them.

How did You Export from Video-editing program used ? I prefer
• iMovie HD6 - just drop the movie project icon (NOT iMovie Icon - the PROJECT one) over into iDVD big menu window (avoiding - drop-zones as they are for other tasks)
• iMovie'08 to '11 - Share to MEDIA BROWSER - AND AS MEDIUM - not HD or other resolution as iDVD does a bad downscaling job.
• iMovie'13 (version 10.0.x) - Share as 480p - Import this into iDVD
• FinalCut (Pro or Express) - Export as QuickTime .mov - NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION - IMPORTANT
• Adobe Premiere - I don't know - not tested Yet
• Avid 100 - I don't know - not tested Yet
Cleaning the DVD-burner - If it Burns DVDs OK then that's may be not the problem - But if it only burns CDs OK then either the DVD-burning-laser is dirty or broken.
It is very easy to kill this DVD-laser as it over-heats if one burns several DVDs in a row. I only burn three at a time - then let it cool down for 30 minutes till next batch of three DVDs.

Can't re-install Photoshop, all other programs from Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Design Standard (DVD) installed successfully.

My iMac crashed and once I recovered it I re-installed all my software including my Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Design Standard (DVD) but Photoshop simply won't install after 3 or 4 attempts. After the lengthy installation process I get a huge error message on Photoshop which I am pasting below. How can I finally install Photoshop? All my other programs are working. Are there glitches in iMovie or iDVD that would create problems with viewing a finished project on a standard dvd player?

Everytime I render a new project in iMovie and share it with iDVD to produce a video, there always seems to be glitches in the finished project. I have gone back and tried to recreate the slideshow, but have not had a whole lot of luck. I am wondering if I need to delete the iMovie and iDVD applications from the computer??? If I do that will it fix my problem or will I even be able to redownload the programs without having to pay for them again? I have spent more time and $$$ trying to get a viewable disc to burn and am ready to get rid of the computer altogether. Hopefully that will not have to happen, but this is a constant issue that I go through everytime I work on a project. Any suggestions???

Yes and No.
There are Bugs and ways to make better or Worse DVDs - see if this can help.
There are two "Bugs" (or at least one)
• In iDVD - do not go back to video editing program - if You got Chapters set in Your movie - if You try - then now back in iDVD it will ask You to up-date ==> all Chapters will point to Chapter one. Medicine - create a brand new iDVD Project.
• There MUST NOT BE any Chapter mark set in very beginning of the Movie - or in any transition or within 2 seconds from them.
DVD quality
1. iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
• Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
• Best Performances
(movies + menus less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
• High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.
About double on DL DVDs.
2. Video from
• FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not self-containing, no conversion)
• iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos and the Ken Burns effect NOT is used. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
• iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser ( AND AS MEDIUM - not HD etc as DVD then will suffer in quality ) or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly e.g. x4 or x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09 this can also be set)
This can also be done with Apple’s Disk Utilities application when burning from a DiskImage.
4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc). For SD-Video - if HD-material is used I guess that 4 to 5 times more would do.
5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW) - DVD-R play’s on more and older DVD-Players
7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
(I use JES_Deinterlacer to keep frame per sec. same from editing to the Video-DVD result.)
8. Don’t burn more than three DVDs at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while before next batch.
iDVD quality also depends on.
• DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a short-lived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-Player.
Blu-Ray / BD can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need
_ Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl. BD-component
_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored
_ BD-Player or PlayStation3 - to be able to playback
The BD-encoded DVDs can be play-backed IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
• HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx. 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
• How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
• Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.
• Use of Video-editor. iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not the tools for DVD-production. They discard every second line resulting in a close to VHS-tape quality.
iMovie 1 to HD6 and FinalCut any version delivers same quality as Camera record in = 100% to iDVD
• What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
• What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JES_Deinterlacer_3.2.2 do the conversion)

(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS. They are play-backed by a Mac - then You need not to care
• What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
• How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD’08 or 09
Pro Quality (only in iDVD 08 & 09)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choice before Pro Quality)
1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
(x4 by some and may be even better)
2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
1 = US
2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario

• and I'm very careful on what kind of video-codecs, audio file format and photo file formats I use
• and I consider the iDVD Bug - never go back to video-editor to change/up-date - if so Start a brand new iDVD project
• Chapters set as they should - NO one at very beginning and no one in any transition or within 2 sec from it
• Lay-out - Turn on TV-Safe area and keep everything buttons, titles etc WELL INSIDE not even touching it !
Try to break the process up into two stages
• Save as a DiskImage (calculating part)
• Burn from this .img file (burning stage)
To isolate where the problem starts.

TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
• Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
• No other programs running in BackGround e.g. Energy-Saver
• Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
• Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
• Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
• Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show
• No File Vault on - Important
• NO - TimeMachine - during iMovie/iDVD work either ! IMPORTANT
• Lot's of icons on DeaskTop/Finder also slows down the Mac noticeably
• Start a new User-Account and log into this and iMovie get's faster too - if a project is in a hurry
• And let Mac run on Mains - not just on battery
