HD frequent parking and clunk noise

My HD makes a "clunk" noise as if it is parking constantly or at least once or twice a min. The noise is sort of faint and can only really be heard in an quiet room. However, it is annoying. i was wondering if others had this problem and if there is a solution besides the declunk program?

All modern HD's have an internal monitoring mechanism that checks on the health of the device. It is called [S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology)|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T], and whenever a Mac starts doing strange drive noises, you can open up Disk Utility, select the device (i.e., +186.3 GB Hitachi...+, not Macintosh HD) and on the bottom edge you will see a S.M.A.R.T. Status. Anything different from "Verified" means an error was detected and action should be taken cause failure may be imminent.

  • Intermittent clunk noise

on my G4 PowerBook laptop, I am now getting an intermittent clunk noise similar to when one makes a mistake in typing. The noise is getting more frequent, perhaps every 5 minutes. The CPU readout does not alter and I have gone through the Disk Utility which came up with no errors. I am concerned that the disk is starting to come up with errors. Is there a way to check and verify this, plus correct....or indeed to confirm where the problem is? I have backed up all valuable files.

thanks for the comments. I went through all of the suggestions. I am not certain it is a drive issue. If I turn the sound off, the noise does not occur, so it is coming through the speakers. If it were a drive issue would it not be more of a mechanical noise?
The sound is more like when you mis-type and you get a 'bong' noise. Could it possibly be that some application is getting errors and every now and then sends out the noise? I had a look through 'activity monitor' and could not see anything running that obviously was in error.
Any suggestions on other things to look at?
    Thanks

  • 56HM195 DLP Clunking noise dim/bright issue

Got an old 56HM195 that I inherited, been running good until the other day it started making a clunking noise.  The picture dims and brights alternately with each 'clunk'.  The bit of lamp I can see shining thru the rear of the housing appears steady.  So the dimming is in the mechanism, perhaps?  I can hear a fan running.  The vents aren't too dusty.  I pulled the lamp, visually it looks good.  It is an OEM type I put in back in 2012, not one of the cheapos.  The picture has been slowly dimming with age (gets a lot of use) and I knew I was headed for a new lamp eventually, however the clanking/dimming has me stumped, especially when from the rear peeking in the cracks the lamp light appears to be steady up to a certain area, I'm assuming past the light engine, then you see the flashing.  The clunking/flashing isn't quite per second but is is close to that and very regular, not intermittent or variable.  The picture is otherwise flawless, I have no static, no spots, no green/blue areas, the colors are as they should be as far as I see.
When I'm not turning it on or off, and it's just sitting there flashing the screen bright/dim and clunking, IIRC the led lights don't show any errors.
When I turn the television back off, the clanking continues until the set reaches the end of its cooldown cycle, at which time it quits making the noise.
Fan going bad?  Light engine crapping out?  Is it really just the lamp?  Reluctant to buy a cheap lamp, but also reluctant to buy a full-priced one when I'm not sure that is the fix.  Any ideas?  If no one replies I'll be tempted to do dirt cheap lamp knowing it's a piece of junk, on the off chance it is a lamp issue, then I'll go from there.  With Wally selling comparably-sized flat screens in the $400 range now I'm not going to pour tons of money in this but I don't mind feeding it lamps every three or four years, either.

Thanks for the links. Yes, I've tried everything, and so did a Genius at the  Store today. He took it in the back, then came out, saying that he thinks it's a logic board problem. He told me that he had hit the button to turn it on, and that it had not responded immediately, but came on a few moments later. Despite my best efforts, I have not been able to replicate this behavior. He said he really didn't know much more about it, and that he wished he could, but he was "bound by 's rules" on the matter and had to send me along with the out-of-warranty line. So I'm heading to a 3rd-party guy in the next day or to, and I'm gonna let him run some diagnostics on it.
I don't know what he was talking about with the turning on thing, but it seems to turn on just fine for me–and I've pushed that button all night now.
Hopefully the second opinion will cast some light onto this issue.

  • Clunking noise?

Hi, I got my Mac Pro a few days ago, and when it started up I was very happy with how little noise it generated, other that the usual HD clicking noise, which is pretty standard.
About 5 minutes in, it started making a loud clunking noise, even though I wasn't putting it through any stress at all. It sounded like someone was using a jack hammer on the road outside, and then about 30 seconds later, it went away again.
I'd hoped this was a one off thing, but it seems to happen intermittently for short periods of time and is very noticeable.
I have three hard disks installed, one I have yet to put anything on (bay 3), one that has my music sample library on (bay 2), and one running the OS (bay 1). Activity monitor doesn't list any unusual amount of disk activity when the noise occurs, though.
The noise does appear to be coming from the front/top area of the MP, leading me to suspect it's either the main fan or the disk in bay 1/2, which is more likely.
    Anyone got any ideas?
    Thanks, Ed

Check and see if the drive manufacturers list a STIR (Seek To Increase Reliability) function for their drives. You migh be hearing that. This little gem of hard drive behaviour is designed to keep the heads moving around inside the unit so as to prevent a heat build up.
Seagates have this, I think a lot of the drive manufacturers do, but it can be right noisy at times. It can be a ticking, a clunking or a soft chattering sound. You wouldn't see any disk activity during a STIR time, since it's a hardware function of the drive being idle and has nothing to do with the OS.
Does this noise stop when you go into the drive and poke around some files? If so, that's what it is.

  • Having lagging problems with YouTube videos, it simply takes so long for the red bar to completely load and the videos frequently pause and take too long to restart playing again.

I have been having lagging problems with YouTube videos for a number of months now. It simply takes so long for the red bar to completely load and the videos frequently pause and take too long to restart playing again. Even with little 2 and 3 minute videos.
I have a fast computer and my webpages load really, really fast. I have FireFox 4 browser and a Vista Home Premium 64-bit OS. So I don't have a slow computer or web browser. But these slow YouTube vids take way too long to load for some reason.
Does anyone have any idea how I can speed up YouTube?

    Hi
The forums are customer to customer in the first instance, Only the mods (BT) will ask for personal information through a email link. Would you mind posting your Hub stats & BT speed test results this will help all with diagnosis-
To post the full stats from your router
    for home hub - 192.168.1.254
Navigate to ADSL Settings or use the A-Z at the top right
Click on More Details and then post the results.
Run BT speed tester and post the results from http://speedtester.bt.com/
If possible it would be best to connect to the BT master socket this will rule out any telephone/broadband extension wiring also consider the housing of the hub/router as anything electrical can cause problems as these are your responsibility, if these are found to be the case Openreach (engineer) will charge BT Broadband, which will be passed onto you, around £130.00.
Noisy line! When making telephone calls, if so this is not good for your broadband, you can check-
Quite line test dial 17070 option 2 and listen - should hear nothing best done with old type analogue phone digital (dect) will do but may have slight hiss If you hear noise- crackling pops etc, report it as a noisy line on your phone, don’t mention broadband, Bt Faults on 151.
As for your FTTC its available in some areas between 40% & 80% of customers in enabled areas can receive it!

  • Macbook Pro, clicking/clunking noise near Magsafe Power Connector?

    Hi all,
I recently purchased (3 weeks ago) A brand new late 2008 old-model MacBook Pro with full 1-Year Apple Warranty.
Just earlier today, near the magsafe power adapter there is a really audible clicking/clunking noise, sometimes it wont do it for ages, sometimes it does it 4 or 5 times in one minute... It wasn't doing this at all previously, but now it has started doing so..
Does anyone know what this could be? I've googled and read through a few topics but there aren't really any problems that sound similar to mine.
    Thanks,
    Paul

Since one of the possibilities is the hard drive, be sure to make a good back up of your data and keep it up to date while you are researching what the noise is. Also, open Disk Utility and see what the S.M.A.R.T. status is.
Another possibility might be a fan.
You could run the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test and see if anything turns up in the form of an error code.
These are just a couple of general suggestions. Each build has its own idiosyncrasies, and you will likely find out more specific information in the late 2008 forum.
    Good luck!

  • Using Aperture 3.51 I am having frequent crashes and freez ups when editing Canon raw files?

    HI,
I have an IMac with 4 G of Ram and am using Apeture 3.51. When trying to edit CS2 raw files I experience frequent crashes and freez ups of the whole computer. Any suggestions?

You didn't mention any color calibration being done on your monitor.  This is an essential part of any color-correct workflow.  What are you using to calibrate your monitor (and your printer)?
Print profiles (for soft-proofing as well as printing) are for specific combinations of paper & printer.  The nine you have are each, most likely, for a common paper (perhaps mfr'd by Canon) to be used with your printer.
I don't know what you mean when you say "I choose a high standard print option".
Have you read the User Manual chapter on printing?

There is also a good appendix on calibration:

  • Iphone 5s Echo and Swoosh noises during active call

    Hello All,
I purchased a new iphone 5s around a month back and I consistently get echoes of my own voice and swoosh noises during call. This happens irrespective if I make the call or an incoming call is answered, from any location like my room and on the street (No tunnels, elevators, etc). I originally thought it was because I receive notifications like texts or if my cheek touches the display, but I hear this noises and echoes even if I am on headphone (both apple and other branded headphones). Is this is a known issue, if so how do I resolve it ?
    Thanks

Flip the silent switch on the side of the iphone.

Probably not, since user-caused damage isn't covered by the warranty. But you can take the iPhone to an Apple Store and see if there's anything they can do for you. A phone company store will not service your iPhone at all, to the best of my knowledge.

  • Hard drive and mouse noise over speakers

    Hello all,
I have a iMac and just recently have noticed hard drive, mouse and buzzing noise coming over my powered speakers. I have been a home recoding musican for the last 10 years and just recently moved to California. Since I've been here I'm now hearing all of this unwanted hard drive, mouse and various other noises coming thru my powered speakers. Even turning down my speakers to 0, having a deadicated power strip/noise surpessor on ALL of my devices, im still getting these noises. Like moving the mouse you hear staic thru the speakers.
Any idea where to start looking into this problem? Need a solution as this is killing me.
thanks for your help in advance.

    I hope this helps...
I also had a problem with fan noise. It not only creates more than normal noise, but i notices a difference in my battery life... it was really bad.
Well after using istat pro i notices a activity that took up about 85%-95% of my processes.... And stated 'Canon ip5000'.... this was my printer that wasn't attached!
I opened activity monitor to search for this process... i couldn't find it under that name. However, i did notice a printer agent of sorts (i can't remember what it was called).
Anyway, after quitting this process my fan almost immediately went from 6000rpm to 2000rpms and the noise was almost gone! And my battery life that was sitting on 24 mins (after a full charge and 40 mins!!) and then went up to 1hr15mins!
    What a difference.
I'm using tiger... and the only difference that remember doing was updating the printer driver... hey presto.
I'm sure that is the issue with a lot of people... that some sort of deamon is running in the back ground and is taking an alwful lot of processor time!!!
    Hope this helps!

As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...
You are now in a perfect position to do a
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.
Here is a link to a Widget to monitor your temps and other operations:
    http://islayer.com/apps/istatpro/
since you are running 10.6.8 did you install the combo update?
    Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
It is more stable than the regular version.
You could use your original install disc and boot from the disc, run Disc Utility and do a repair disk.

  • Why does PhotoShop CC 2014 crash my Windows 7 Professional 64-bit PC every time I try to use Sharpen/Blur Reduction and also Noise Reduction ??!!!???

    Hi Adobe
You a have a really wonderful PhotoShop CC product. It's really great, and I know new versions such as 2014 have their teething problems.
But I am getting really sick of my Windows 7 Professional 64-bit PC being crashed whenever I try to use PhotoShop CC 2014 Sharpen / Blur Reduction and also Noise Reduction.
This happens both with JPG's and PSD's.
Please sort your **** out and get some patches out to address this quickly !!
    Chris Tattersall

    Chris,
It doesn't crash for everyone.  A person could be forgiven for saying, in return, "Please sort out your **** system problems".
Trust me when I say many, many problems are caused by the computer system setup not being up to the needs of this cutting-edge graphics software.  Photoshop is heavily dependent on the GPU, and GPU drivers are notorious for having bugs (they're primarily written to run games).
However, that being said, recent driver releases from both ATI and nVidia do actually work pretty well with Photoshop CC 2014.
What video card do you have?
What display driver version are you running?
If you're unsure how to tell these things, go into Photoshop, choose Help - System Info, copy the data, and post it here.
