HD Icon keeps disappearing?

Hello,
A few months ago I had several problems with my G5 (the HD icon disappeared from the desktop and reading/seeing the contents of all drives became very slow as did performance) I posted a thread about it and got some help, and i ended up buying a new internal hard drive, buying Disk Warrior, Super Duper and two new external hard drives to give me a backup system.
All had been working fine till this morning when i switched on to do some work and the HD icon was not on my desktop again!! I booted up from the DW cd and rebuilt the HD directory and now I can see my HD but it has left me wondering what the real problem is? I believed that by replacing the hard drive I had replaced the hardware problem but obviously not.
Does this sound like a hardware or a software problem?
Any help would be appreciated, many thanks,

Hi Hatter,
I did put the new HD in myself so I will check the connection... could be a dodgy cable connecting to HD? Not sure......
I do have 2 seperate bootable drives, I shall run DW from these in future, thanks for the tip.
Even if it is a faulty connection to the drive Im confused as to why it one day just developed this problem, it had been working absolutley fine without any of these problems for many years..... Perhaps this is just the way problems occur with computers.
How do I look to see if other software is running that I might not be aware of?
Would you recommend getting someone to look at it?
Thanks Hatter, Rob

  • My icons keep disappearing and then reappearing

I'm new to macs and this problem is confusing me, all of a sudden last night my desktop icons keep disappearing and then they reappear in the same place, but if i have a window open like Macintosh HD it closes it. When this happens it also switches from what im working on, like this message so I have to click back on it to continue.
This is happening alot and I was hoping someone could give me some info. or do I have to reinstall.....
Im used to having to do these things on PC's but not on macs.
    Cheers

    Tony,
You have to reset the parameter ram.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
Macintosh: How to Reset PRAM and NVRAM
This document explains how to reset the parameter random access memory (PRAM) and nonvolatile RAM (NVRAM) on Macintosh computers.
    Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.
Your computer's PRAM and the NVRAM are reset to the default values. The clock settings may be reset to a default date on some models

  • Reading list icon keeps disappearing

I am using OSX 10.6.8, I use the reading list icon a lot.. the pair of glasses on the left of the toolbar, but it keeps disappearing every day. I have gone into Customize toolbar but it disappears from there also.
Any advise on how or why it keeps vanishing would be more than welcome as frustrating the **** out of me..

Might be corrupted Safari preferences ...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.Safari.plist file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that didn't help, from your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab.
Switch to OFF if there are any installed, quit and relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, uninstall one extension at a time until you find the that is causing incompatibility issues with the Reading List.

  • AirPlay icon keeps disappearing

    Hi,
The AirPlay icon has disappeared from the control centre of my ipad and iPhone again. Last time resetting the Apple TV worked but it's long-winded and didn't help this time. All three devices have up to date software, fine connectivity on their own and are on the same wifi. It worked fine a couple of days ago and nothing has changed. I've tried the troubleshooting and there are no settings or messages for airplay not working, it just disappears with no explanation.
Has anyone else had this problem and fixed it? Thanks.
    Ben

airplay does not work over the Internet so if your iphone and ipad is not using wifi it will not work
if they are then try restarting your wifi router

  • Buddies phone/camera icon keeps disappearing

I"m logged onto ichat, but after some time the icons for audio/video chats next to my buddies start disappearing. It doesn't happen to all of them at once or even to certian buddies...it's very random. what causes this and how do i fix it?
macbook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I'm having the same problem. I noticed it about three days ago but didn't realize the full scope of the issue at that time.
I started troubleshooting it yesterday and discovered that the audio and video icons will disappear when any user in my buddy list has a change in availability. So, if he goes idle, his audio/video icon will disappear. And if he's already idle when I log in and he becomes active again, the audio/video icon will disappear.
The icons come back in three different ways. They'll immediately return if an affected buddy logs off and back on, or I log off and back on. They'll also spontaneously reappear after a period of time.
I'm relieved to hear that other people are having the same problem. It seems to be an issue with the AIM server, and hopefully, it will be resolved soon.

  • Dock Icons Keep disappearing!

Last week I took all the icons out of my dock leaving only 5 icons, Finder, Mail, Safari, iChat, and Trash. After some time, I tried putting the default icons back in the dock because I was finding it hard to launch apps like iTunes from spotlight or finder. I finished putting my icons back inn place and after 30 seconds, the icons start disappearing in their own! first it went back to 7 icons and then back to the first 5. I tried reinstalling Leopard, restarting my mac and resizing the dock many times but to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To restore the dock to its original state with original icons goto:
    'user' > Library > Preferences
    Delete the two files:
    com.apple.dock.db
    com.apple.dock.plist
Open terminal and type (with caps and space):
    Killall Dock
The dock will now be in mint condition.
    Hope this helps.

Do you mean at the top of Finder windows, in the "Toolbar"?
If so, at some point in the past, you dragged (and dropped) a folder, document, or app icon from a Finder window to the Toolbar area of a Finder window.  I guess you did it three times, since there are three question marks now.  Where they are located in the Toolbar is where you dropped them.  You may have done this unintentionally, while you were dragging an icon between Finder windows.
These are shortcuts; when you click on one in the Toolbar, it opens that folder, document, or app.  Since the question marks appeared after you did some housecleaning on the Mac, they were probably shortcuts to three of those pictures or documents. And you maybe you did drop them onto the Toolbar by mistake.  No big deal...
To get rid of them now, right (control) click in the Toolbar area.  Select Customize Toolbar from the menu.  A panel drops down with things you can customize in the Toolbar.  With that panel showing, drag each of the three question marks off the Toolbar and release.  It goes "poof" and disappears.
Unless you want to make some other changes to the Toolbar, click Done.

  • Toolbar icons keep disappearing

    Safari 4.0 Mac OS X
I added a few icons from preferences by dragging them to the toolbar yesterday, including a Home button. Today on restart of the machine they are now gone. This happens repeatedly. Has this happened to others and if so what is the fix for it? thanks

    Hi Adam
A corrupt preference file seems to be at the root of the "disappearing icons". Via the Finder: Your User Account>Library>Preferences folder. Move the com.apple.safari.plist file to the trash, then restart Safari. This resets Safari preferences to default values. Restore any custom settings in either the Preference panel, Edit (spelling), or View Menu. Also, restore any custom icons.
Also, the reset adds Apple default bookmarks to your Bookmarks collection (command/option/B keys). Delete any you don't want.

  • Application icons keep disappearing

After I downloaded a few applications off the app store the icon to launch the application just disappeared. I try to redownload the application but it says its already installed and when i sync it with itunes it says its install on my phone. The only way to get the application back is for me to delete them all off itunes and then reinstall every single one. Is there anyway to avoid this hassle?

Samething happen with my iPhone 3G with 2.2.1 firmware. I recently purchase Ocarina and Bejewelled 2.
I only have 4 pages and every pages has at least 8 application and max of 16.
I tried to removed and reinstall from the iTunes, it won't work.
I tried to removed and redownload from iTunes Apps on the iPhone itself :worked! after I sync it with my iTunes its dissapear again.
Until now, those above method I use won't work and icons still dissapear.
I try to buy again from iTunes store, it say already 'Installed'
    Any idea?

  • Desktop icons keep disappearing

Hello, My desktop icons are suddenly, and continually disappearing. The desktop will be completely blank, and the only way to restore it to normal is by rebooting or relaunching finder. Any ideas what's going on or a way to figure out and solve the problem?
    Thanks.

You may be having some directory issues. Try booting from your OS installer disk and run Repair Disk from Disk Utilities. See if that clears it up.

  • Icons keep disappearing

and I keep having to reboot my bb,  anyone know  why?

    Finding your OS is here:
    Homescreen > Options > About
The third line of text, the first half, all 4 octets.
Having a gig of memory is not helpful...there are many kinds of memory...depending on the age of your OS the useful information will be either here:
Homescreen > Options > Memory -- the "Application Memory" reading
    or here:
Homescreen > Options > Status -- the "File Free" reading
You still haven't said what the specific icons are that keep vanishing. And do they vanish on their own? Or do you delete/hide them yet they come back? Details, please...
Some icons are pushed to you by your carrier and cannot be deleted -- they are "teasers", trying to entice you to do something that your carrier wants you to do. Those icons are basically shortcuts to an installation that the carrier is pushing out -- the only thing you can do with those icons is to move them all to a common folder (e.g., "junk") or hide them.

Hey there, I'm new to the discussion board. And my apologies for sounding computer illiterate. I just installed Leopard on my PowerBook G4 and I have started having problems with my dock. The auto hide and show dock preference doesn't work and when I scroll over the icons the names don't pop up and nothing gets highlighted. Same thing goes for scrolling over my menu bar and over my bookmarks on the bookmark bar. Just looking for some help, please. I've tried all sorts of things, including the "killall Dock" command in the Terminal. But to no avail.
    Any ideas?

  • OSX Menu Bar Icons Keep Disappearing

Sometimes after a restart, items previously displayed in the OSX Menu Bar disappear.
    This happens consistently with :-
    - Date and Time : the pref item 'Show the date and time' becomes de-checked.
Re-checking it displays the date and time icon in the Menu Bar.
    - Displays : the pref item 'Show displays in menu bar' becomes de-checked.
Re-checking it displays the Displays icon in the Menu Bar.
    - Airport : the pref item 'Show AirPort status in menu bar' becomes de-checked;
Re-checking it displays the Airport icon in the Menu Bar.
    - Fax : the pref item 'Show fax status in menu bar' becomes de-checked;
Re-checking it displays the Fax icon in the Menu Bar.
    - Bluetooth : the pref item 'Show Bluetooth status in menu bar' is STILL checked, but the Bluetooth icon is not displayed;
Un-checking and then re-checking it displays the Bluetooth icon in the Menu Bar.
I have not observed a connection between this problem and any activities prior to restart - but the icons above usually (not always) disappear together. I know other users have this problem and that it has been addressed in a number of posts - but I am still looking for a reliable solution ...

I am having similar problems. The items are usually disappearing when I move them using Cmd+Mouse Drag. For example, when I move the clock it disappears. However, stranger is that when I re-enable the clock display in Preferences, new clock appears, but the "hidden" time is present as well - I can get the time status item menu from blank space. I managed to have 5 hidden clocks there. Other items disappear as well.
I tried to kill SystemUIServer - all items were removed, only spotlight icon was present. Then I reenabled all the items I wanted to have there. This kind-of fixed the problem. But still ... moving items will make them hidden, but still present in the menu bar.
    I am using OS X 10.4.10
    I have reported this (Bug ID# 5486548).
