HD Live Capture (aka Capture Now fcp7) into FCPX

I imagine that if you can capture live footage from an onboard iSight camera, you should be able to plug something a little nicer in that gives you a little more control. I've been struggling with this for the past few weeks and have been to a few different stores to test cameras and haven't found anything that works yet.
My criteria for the camera needs to be HD and I need to be able to get a lav mic plugged into it.
Other than that, I'm pretty open to whatever (preferrably something around $2-5k).
Any thoughts and input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ian

That make not a great difference for me.
I only see that I cannot capture videos using my DV Firewire camera as a video converter.
Probably timecode is not so important (for me) since FCE captures without it, FCP X by iSight captures without it, Quicktime (for only about an hour) capture without it, iMovie captures (? I have never tried) without it... but all of them capture the video!!! And do the job.
I think that a checkmark in the prefs to choose "ignore time code" would be great.

  • Live Capture Plus, CatDV and FCPX Import Files

I have tested my workflow process as set out in thread:
Re: Is my workflow reasonable for a beginner?
capturing Sony handycam DV using Live Capture Plus - that seems to work fine.
Files set up in CatDV under the appropriate directory structure as mov type files - that seems to work fine.
Tested files with QuickTime and the Inspector shows DV for the imported clips.
Went into FCPX used Import Files - I selected the DV file in the CatDV directory and checked Create Optimizd Media.  The problem is that transcoded media was not created in the Event directory as I thought would happen.
I do get a small alias file in the Event - Original Media directory.
The clip does import and opens fine in FCPX - on reveal it points to the DV media in the CatDV Directory.
Is there a reason ProRes422 optimized media was not created?
Additionally going into the event after the import and trying to optimize the clip manually the Create Optimized Media (and Create Proxy Media) options are greyed out.
    Thanks.

Read the help file on importing and on the page Import Preferences their are a few words that indicate:
"If the original camera format can be edited with good performance, this option will be dimmed." as it relates to creating optimized files.
Guess that means the DV file provide "good performance".

  • FCP7 live capture with alpha

    Hi all,
I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to live ingest keyed material. Read something about the blackmagic livekey in combination with the decklink.
The thing is; I have a Sony PMW-EX1 with which we record a newsshow every week through SDI in a chroma studio. The signal is being keyed by the software and so we're ingesting a pre-composed image with an alpha and background (on a PC). Now it appears the software/hardware we are using is end of life so I wanted to have a look at my other options.
Is there a way te get the same result out of different hardware?(I prefer Apple) I was thinking to use the capture now utility in FCP 7 but that still leaves my ingest un-keyed.. I would love to ingest my pre-keyed material with at least an alpha and even better; with background. Love to hear your ideas!
    regards,
    Jan-David

    Hi MtD,
Yes I am changing the Capture preset to iO4.  Once that happens, it lets me run both the camera and the iO4 into the laptop but then an error message pops up the moment I try to capture it.
I was only trying to use 3 out of the 4 channels of the iO4.
    Thanks!

  • Live capture into PP CC 2014

I have a Samsung NX30 mirrorless camera, which I purchased to assist me in making videos - I work alone. The camera streams video at 1080p @ 30fps over HDMI 1.4a. Older, tape-based cameras streamed video into PP via live capture over FireWire. A similar live video capture feature for HDMI capture cards would provide for a workflow as efficient as FireWire capture used to be. BTW, I tried 3 BlackMagic capture cards, which advertised such a feature and none of them worked. Does anyone have a solution for live capture with this camera?

It's quite possible that there is nothing wrong with any of the capture cards you tried and it could be the camera. Did you try capturing any other HDMI video sources other than the NX30? Here's the thing - "camcorders" with HDMI outputs send out a very standard 1080i signal in most cases, and they "just work" whether talking about video capture to a PC or using a portable recorder such as the Atomos Ninja 2 device.
DSLR cameras are another story entirely. When DSLRs first started offering HD video recording a few years ago, a lot of them had non-standard HDMI outputs. Some cameras had viewfinder data overlays on the HDMI output that could NOT be disabled, rendering the HDMI output useless for recording. Some cameras also put out a weird frame sizing that was cropped or otherwise non-standard. Most newer models of Canon, Panasonic, and Sony DSLRs are now putting out a standard signal that works, in part due to the efforts of Atomos working directly with the camera makers.
Some of the DSLRs that will work with Atomos don't do so "out of the box" - the user is required to go into the DSLR setup menu and get all the settings "just so" to make it work. While it is quite common for DSLR videographers to want to connect to a portable recorder such as the Atomos units, much less likely when talking about desktop capture, so that is why I keep referencing Atomos, since I don't know anyone connecting a DSLR to a BlackMagic card for instance.
So, while you may be able to connect the NX30 HDMI output directly to an HD screen and get a picture, that is not a guarantee that the same HDMI output is going to work with a "capture card". I checked here What cameras are supported? | Atomos and see no mention of any Samsung camera models. That does not necessarily mean it is not possible to record the output, but not a good sign that it is not mentioned. The solution might be as simple as changing a camera menu setting or record mode or something, but I'm not familiar with that camera personally.
I see that the NX30 can record 1080p60, so please note that most capture cards do not accept 1080p60 inputs. I did see camera specs that suggest the HDMI output is 1080p30 and that *should* work.
Just to give you an idea of the compatibility issues with recording HDMI from DSLRs, check these links: http://atomos.helponclick.com/kb/article/ninja-tests-with-popular-dslr-cameras
F3 - What cameras work with Atomos recorders? - ATOMOS
May I ask the intended workflow? Is there a reason that the video recorded to SD card is not going to work out for your needs, making "live capture" preferable?

  • Live capturing directly into timeline for Green Screen

Basically i am doing a live event where i am using a green screen and people can choose different backgrounds which i will chroma key in but i want to know if it's possible on premier to capture directly into a timeline so i can essential have a chroma keyed output of what it will look like in the program window? I have been able to do this before when using Final Cut but at the moment it looks like I'm going to have to capture it first and then and then just add the clip to the timeline.
Any advice or help would be great, thank you

Got this to work! *Here's how:*
Connect the XHA1 camera to the Macbook Pro via Firewire (Fire 400 out of camera, into Firewire 800 on laptop -- using an adapter since the new Macbooks only have an 800 port).
Turn on camera and open Final Cut Pro 7.
*Final Cut Pro settings (under Audio/Video Settings):*
    Sequence Preset - HDV - 1080i60
    Capture Preset: HDV
    Device Control Preset: HDV Firewire
    Click Log & Capture.
Start recording onto tape in the camera.
    Start Capture Now.
You're now recording to both tape and the laptop simultaneously. If you stop the camera recording, the laptop will continue to capture without a glitch.
BUT -- if you start the camera recording again (tape) while you're still capturing to computer, your captured file on the computer will have a glitch.
    So glad this works ...

FCP X?  Then you need to use a different forum...This is the FCP 7 and earlier forum:
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/professional_applications/final_cut_pro_ x
FCP 7?  Did it look like it captured normally? Everything go smoothly?  Stop normal?  Did an error occur at any point?  Can you open the file in QT?
In the future...do not rely on ONLY FCP for this task. Get a reputable recorder that can record to ProRes. AJA KiPro, KiPro Mini, Atmos Ninja, Decklink Recorder...lots of options.

  • Unable to "Capture Now"

My friend shot some dv footage over the weekend that he wanted me to edit but for some reason I cannot capture it into my computer. He shot it with another camera, I'm sure it was just a consumer hand held one. I'm using my Sony HDR FX1 to capture it though. It plays fine in it, and Final Cut recognizes it, but when I click on capture now, it brings up a window that's black and says "waiting for timecode" and just sits there forever. What am I doing wrong?
    Bones

Generally speaking, logging then using batch capture is a more efficient means of bringing in material. But to do that, you must have a machine capable of time code control. With 'non-controllable device' you are sort of screwed.

  • Live Capture with a camera via firewire and usb audio interface

I am trying to do a live capture through Final Cut 7.
I want the video feed through the firewire from my HVX200 and the audio feed from a 4 channel usb audio interface (Alesis iO4).
When I have both audio and video input coming in from the HVX200, the live capture works fine.
However, when I change the audio input so that it is coming from the usb audio interface, final cut has an error message saying "Video is not available."
During the preview, I see the video clearly and am getting levels from the iO4.
But when I try to capture, I get the error message.
Is it a processor issue (I've attached my specs below) with problems handling 2 separate inputs?
I'm not quite sure what the problem is.
    Any input is greatly appreciated.

  • Live Capture from Video Mixer

I'm having a problem with getting my Powerbook to communicate with my Videonics MXPro Dv digital video switcher. The switcher has firewire out which works when I connect to a camera but I can't get Final Cut 5 to connect with it. I have set up my device setting as non-controllable but with no success. I am trying to capture SD footage of school musical. Any thoughts?

    Additional thoughts...
If you have a DV camera/deck, I'd try to use that instead of the Canopus. This way, you could record to tape what you're capturing live.
Granted, there is timecode differences between the two, but it serves as a backup, should the live capture fail. (and trust me, it will at some point...Mr. Murphy says so)
For our workflow, we do a couple of things...for mission critical events, we ISO record to tape in each camera and to a Deck (live to tape), as well as the live capture into FCP.
We then capture all tapes and cut shows from that. This way, we have DV recorded quality from camera tapes, along with proper timecode, which comes in handy, should we ever have to revisit the project. (the live capture becomes our redundant backup recording, which we dump after the show is a lock)
For non-mission critical, we just record the live cut to the deck, along with the live capture into FCP. We can cut from either, then we can dump the live captures from the drives (saving valuable disk space) and still have tape backup to re-cut if needed.

  • Extracting Photos From Live Capture Mode

    Greetings,
Is it possible to capture still frames live from my HD camcorder when I connect it to Final Cut Express and open Live Capture mode? I'm working on a stop motion animation and thought being able to capture photos from my camcorder and then have them directly transferred into my editing program would be useful.
    Thanks

  • Capturing "Now" FCP automaticly making multiple clips

When capturing "Now" FCP is cutting a single clip into multiple clips during capture, on its own. Any suggestions?
    HDV 1080i60
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Hi,
it does seem unlikely, but sometimes FCP breaks up continuous shots when working with HDV. Most of the time, this happens towards the end of a shot, so I end up with 3-4 seconds of the first shot.
Very rarely, that happens with MiniDV, too. The TC seems to be fine, but there may be minor problems, and FCP seems to be a bit picky when it comes to that, so you get a TC break when (at least on your deck) there seems to be a continuous TC. And HDV is even worse than DV. But that's just my own experience. Maybe its as simple as your playhead being clogged up?
    Cheers,

  • Capture Now Doesn't work

I recently had audio dropout problems when shooting an event...it was my camcorder's fault....my brand new Sony PD170 ended up getting repaired. Now I'm trying to log and capture the tapes. I have batch captured some of the footage but have been having trouble capturing some clips...it's always the clips with glaring dropout issues. When I try to batch capture these clips they remain offline. I figured it might be a timecode issue, so I tried capturing the offline clips using "capture now." The first clip I tried to capture ran about 5 seconds with no problem and then stopped and I received the message "Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. Capture has been aborted and your clip has been saved."
For your information, I know how to do a "Capture Now"....am just experiencing problems for the first time now. Also, want to mention that under User Preferences, I UNchecked "Abort ETT/PTV on dropped frames" and I UNchecked "Abort capture on dropped frames." Under System Settings I checked "Limit Capture Now to 30 mins."
Am I doing something wrong or does it make sense that due to my camera problems I will never be able to capture some of the footage? Thanks so much for your help.

'Problem Ticket' huh? That's good, Patrick. When I worked for the telephome company in Washington, D. C., three or four lifetimes ago, we called them Trouble Tickets.
I might incorporate that phrase into this current thread, when I revise it in v2:

  • FCP4: Can't "capture now"

    FCP4
    Powerbook G4 867MHZ 10.2.8
When I try to use "capture now" in FCP4, I get the "allocating disk space" message. I've noticed that many seem to have had a similar problem. But whereas everyone else who sees this message seems to end with the dreaded rainbow circle of confusion spinning into eternity and then discover gigantic phantom files, for me the "capture now" window just disappears after about 15 seconds and I end up right back where I started. The only evidence that I tried the procedure at all are small (roughly 200kb) files in the "capture scratch." These files do have the tell-tale av. I also have Norton Antivirus running, though I've also tried disabling it with no discernible difference.
What I find odd is that the last time I had a digitizing session (about two months ago) everything worked like a charm. As far as I can tell nothing has changed in my set-up. Now, it's not working at all.
I have four different scratch drives and have tried all of them, as well as the internal hard drive. I have tried reducing the limit of "capture now" to 1 minute. I've tried trashing the preferences, restarted the machine any number of times. The physical connections are all working, since I was able to preview the source through iMovie. (However, my digitizer doesn't import properly to iMovie, so I can't simply use that as a workaround.) I'm out of ideas. Does anyone else have some? (Please....)
    Thanks!

    Thanks!
    I'm using FCP 4.1.
QT 6.5.3. Don't have a key for QT6 Pro. Tried to get one when I moved FCP from my desktop machine (and, yes, I did properly uninstall it from the old machine), but haven't figured out how to get a Pro key for QT6, now that QT7 is out. In any case, Pro can't be the problem since I haven't had it for a long time.
I'm in the process of unistalling all Norton software—though I'm not sure how to make sure I get everything. Having looked through a number of posts, others seem to have that problem as well. But I've had NAV running for a long time and it's never interfered with FCP before. (I won't be able to check until tonight when I get back from teaching.)
At least two of the external drives are HFS, as, of course, is the internal. (I inherited the other two and away from them so at the moment I can't check them.) In any case they all seem to behave in the same way.
Yes, I'm running 10.2.8. I'm of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" school. Really, it's been very stable for me, and again it's never given FCP any trouble. But it's clear that I'll need to upgrade to 10.4 if I determine that the FCP 5/Studio will run decently on my machine.
For various reasons, primarily because it allows me to bypass you know what, I'm using an old Formac digitizer. I need to have this capability because I have to be able to extract clips (from my own library) for use in the classroom (which also explains why I only use FCP in spurts).
    Thanks!

  • Capture Now does not complete capture

I completed a project with 7 DVDs. I found one, the first one, that had an error. It has been about 5 months since I completed this first DVD. Since I needed more disk space I could not keep all of the information for the seven disks so I started deleting the files for DVD #1. Consequently, I cannot go back to the original FCE data. I decided to play DVD #1 through a converter and capture it in FCE as a new project. I did this once before and it worked, but not this time.
The DVD is 1 hour and 13 minutes long. I hooked up a TV so I could see what is playing through the converter and also watch the Capture Now on the computer screen. This is what happens. The DVD plays perfectly from start to finish on the TV screen AND on the Capture Now screen on the computer. However, when completed the Browser shows that only 43 minutes were transferred to the sequence in the Browser. I tried it twice with the same results. I set the Capture Now length to 90 minutes.
How do I capture a 73 minute DVD that was originally burned from FCE via Quicktime? John

Hi Ian. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, but we were away for a couple of days. Good to hear from you again, especially when your suggestion, as usual, worked. I had never seen DV-NTSC DV Converter, but it worked. I did not want to split the DVD into two parts, so I greatly appreciate your solution.
By the way I did finish 7 DVDs, used a printer (Epson 300) that could print labels on the DVDs, made ten copies put them into booklets {which I purchased through our library) and distributed them to our extended family yesterday. I am now ready to start a new project so you may hear from me sometime in the future.
Again, many thanks for your help. John.

  • Capture Now with Non-Controllable Device and Timecode from deck

    Hi,
Trying to replace a windows laptop using premiere during our events.
The mentioned system will allow me to get audio/video/timecode all through firewire from the deck AND allow me to "capture now" as a non-controllable device.
I have not been able to find out how to do this with FCP6. I am able to get the timecode I need, but only with the "controllable" device settings I have thus far tried, at which point a "capture now" gives me an error message stating that the tape has ran out (or something of the sort)
With "Non-Controllable Device" selected, I can "capture now" but the slot where the deck's timecode had been located is completely gone and no timecode was recorded on any of the test clips I tried.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Hi -
    I'm confused.
The DSR 45A only has one firewire port, if you are plugging your computer into that to source the video, where is the video and timecode source feeding the DSR-45A coming from?
Within the DSR 45A there are internal menu selections that specify the timecode behavior of the DSR-45A, are these menu settings correct?
If you load a pre-recorded tape into the DSR-45A can you control the deck, and successfully capture from it as a controlled device from your FCP computer?
    You said:
we have main deck, a backup deck and a dvr deck recording the primary feed. the capture now stuff is extra bonus!
What are the formats of these decks? Is the timecode feeding the DSR-45A coming from one of them?
    Thanks
    MtD
