HD mini-DV deck recommendations?

Hi, I've been using FCP, a Canon XL2, and a Panasonic mini-DV deck for years, and I'm just now switching up to HD with the Canon XH-A1. Do I need an HD mini-DV deck, too, in order to capture my HD footage into FCP? Any recommendations? I'm getting lost on the B&H website and would love some suggestions.
thanks!

Do I need an HD mini-DV deck, too
You need a HDV deck. Because both HDV & DV use the same physical cassette type, they are switchable between formats. The Sony models are pretty good.

  • Mini DV decks to use with Premiere Pro?

I have a few questions regarding mini DV decks and Premiere Pro.
First, is there any Mini DV deck on the market right now that will actually NOT be useful with Premiere Pro?
Does anyone have a personal favorite?
Is there anything I should look out for when I'm looking for one?
I know these are very general questions, but I have no clue whatsoever, and the only way to start to get a clue is to ask. If there's anything else I should be aqskingg/looking for, please say so.

    1. Not that I'm aware of.
    2. Yes. Sony, SR11 in particular or Panasonic NV-DV2000.
    3. Reliability, switchable between NTSC and PAL may be of interest

  • What's the BEST MINI DV deck to use with FCP 5?

I'm tired of using my Gl-1's to capture with. My small zr50 doesn't work that great for a dv deck.
Tell me what brands you have had complete success with.

I'm looking at buying a DVCPro deck to add to my
arsenal right now, which will also play mini-dv and
DVCAM, so depending on what else is going on in your
market, that might be something to look into.
I bought my DSR-11 when I lived in San Francisco.
Outside of news, nobody used DVCPro. All shoots
were hired for DVCAM, Beta, or HD. So I bought a
DVCAM deck. Around Des Moines, nobody shoots DVCAM.
It's all DVCPro and mini dv, and I shoot HD
    occasionally.
AJ-SD93, very sweet machine! this is the vtr i would love to have.

  • Virtual controls no longer 'enabled' in capture window CS4.  JVC Mini DV deck connected thru F-wire.

I've been using my JVC MiniDV(and S-VHS combo) deck to digitally ingest footage via the Capture window on CS4 (originally on Prem Pro 1.5).. but the 'transport' controls (the virtual ones) are no longer enabled.  'Tho it's connected via Firewire to the computer and is definitely being 'seen' by the whole set-up... I cannot stop, start, pause, record etc as I used to be able to by using the virtual transport controls.
I'm having to take the haphazard route of ingesting footage via the RCAs out the back of the unit via a Canopus/Grass Valley i/o box - I've set the 'device control' options (in the capture window) to DV/HDV Device Control.... and the 'Capture Settings' are set to DV... the 'current device' is stating JVC Standard (as it should) so I don't know why I'm not getting the functionality I should have.
ANY help, previous experience, fixes etc would be MOST graciously received and appreciated!

  • Imorting from Mini DV Deck

Having problems digitizing footage from Mini DV into FCP. On all of the footage and mainly on wide shots there is a weird shimmering. Almost as if everything in the scene morray's when ever there is significant camera movement. Especially on leaves, anything with a straight line in any direction. Everything looks great on the longer lenses. Lost three days of work.....help.

FORGOT TO MENTION. I have digitized with exact set-up before when I first got this computer and everything looked fine.

  • What spec Mac Mini would you recommend for running XCode 4?

Our organisation is starting to develop apps for IOS and the first step is purchasing a Mac to run XCode 4 on.
We are on a budget and the Mac Mini is within our price range but after some initial research we are concerned that we would need more RAM in order to run XCode 4 comfortably.
Below is the spec of the Mac Mini we are considering using:
    2.3GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
    2GB memory
    500GB hard drive
    Intel HD Graphics 3000
    OS X Lion
Just wondering what people use to run XCode 4 and how happy they are with the performance.
    Many Thanks
    Richard

If your development will be iOS apps, the base model
should be more than sufficient provided you bump
up to at least 4 gig RAM, preferably 8.  However,
don't purchase the RAM from Apple as it is way over
priced.  Go to Newegg or OWC to purchase it.
If the app requires some signifigant graphics development
and need to use image processing software to create them,
I would suggest bumping up to the next model with the
    discrete graphics chip.

  • Unable to initialize video deck, (can not capture from camera)

    Hello All,
I am using a quad core G5 and am trying to capture some footage into Final Cut Pro version 5.0. I have two Panasonic DVX 100B mini DV cameras. I normally capture with a JVC BR-DV3000 mini DV deck but it is currently not working. So I'm trying to capture using my camera.
I hooked my camera up to my computer via firewire and started final cut, When I click File > Log and capture a little window pops up that reads:
" Unable to initialize video deck. You may still log offline clips or use Capture Now"
I'm not sure why this box is appearing. When I click the capture now button, the Capture window pops up and then I press play on the video camera and the footage plays on the camera but the capture window remains black or empty. I have tried both cameras and two different firewire cables with the same results. I have also tried to restart the computer.
Can anyone shine some light on this situation?
Thank you so much for your help.
    Mike Wardynski

Are there any other firewire devices connected to your Mac?
Did you go into your easy setup and reselect the DV setting for the standard you are using?
Also sometimes, shutting down and restarting your Mac, after making these changes some times allows the new device to be recognized.
One other thing, the DV camera may have a menu setting that needs to be set for communication via firewire possibly?

  • Final Cut Express-Capturing footage off of mini dv with no timecode

    Hello,
For some reason my canon xm1 isn't showing timecode from the mini dv. I've already played footage from the same mini dv off of another mini dv deck and it did show timecode. Now Final Cut Express won't allow me to play clips in because it has no reference. Is there a way around this?

    Hello Franco,
Welcome to the forum. There are lots of good people here who can provide advice & help.
What is your exact hardware setup - are you using any external Firewire hard drives? What version of FCE are you using; what Easy Setup are you using in FCE (DV-PAL, for example).
Did it work before or has it never worked with FCE?

  • Should I buy an iMac or a Mac mini?

HI everyone! Can't decide which one to purchase! I quite like the idea of the portability of the Mac mini and would probably use it alot with my tv for entertainment, but was looking to get the new mid range model for additional space, better specs etc. But the price would be edging near iMac territor, plus I'd probably also need a new monitor for the Mac mini. Just wondering how people have found there experiences with the Mac mini, would they recommend it or just recommend on iMac instead? Especially since the price differenice not bring too different including the external monitor Just to note, Ive heard about the lack of being able to modify the new Mac minis, this isent a problem for me as I'm not big into tech and wouldnt even know where to start on doing something like that!   thanks in advane for your advice!

I’m a recent iMac-to-mini convert. I’ve had two iMacs since 2006. Both served me well, but I use my computer mostly for editing text, and when the ultrawide monitors came out, I realised that having two documents or windows open side by side would be very handy for me. So I bought one, used it with my iMac until the new minis arrived, and then bought the mid-range i5 with a 256 GB SSD and 16 GB of RAM (needed for running Windows in a virtual machine). A big improvement from my old (2009) iMac. If you don’t need higher-range graphics or four cores, a mini will be fine. You can pick and choose the size and quality of monitor that best suits your needs and budget. The upgradeability of the new minis isn’t great, but then neither is it for the iMacs. I liked my iMacs, but I will never buy another.

  • Recommend Sony camcorder compatible with FC.

Upgrading from Mini DV, someone recommended I consider the Sony CX series but I do not know what to consider upgrading from using Mini DV Tape Based Camcorders and Final Cut Express over the past 6 years
Considering - possible iMac upgrade, software upgrade (someone said my 06 Mac doesn't have enough memory for HD upgrade), compatible camcorder with FC and iMovie, any video software to convert footage to edit. Any advice appreciated

This will help with FCPX compatible cameras....
    http://help.apple.com/finalcutpro/cameras/en/index.html?
More important than RAM is the video card.....

If you get a compatible camera, you won't need software to convert footage... FC will do it for you.

  • Which DV Deck to use with Powermac

I'm trying to find out which mini dv deck to use with my G5 Tower to import footage to edit in imovie and final cut. I don't want to waste money on a camera just to import footage, but I also need a deck that can import mini dv, VHS, and DVD, either on the actual machine or to be able to hook those up to it seperately. I do have a budget, but I'm willing to stretch it if the product will be worth it, do everything I want it to do, and last pretty long. Any suggestions are very welcome as I'd like to purchase as soon as possible.
    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   2.0 Ghz, 2GB RAM, 160GB HD

That's a good suggestion. I had something similar called the Hollywood DV Bridge and I'm afraid it malfunctioned and blew out my firewire ports, so I'm a bit wary about those converters. Also, I don't have a camera to import mini dv so I need an actual deck and not just a converter, but I will look into because it looks like a good product. Does it also connect with DVD players to import footage?

  • What is best mac mini for easy video editing? Late 2012 quad-core or late 2014 double core?

    Hi!
I want to buy Mac mini and don't know which one is best for me. Please don't tell me to buy anything else, because it is my choise. I only need to know what is better:
Upgradable late 2012 version with quad core i7, 2.3GHz, 8gb of RAM and Intel HD Graphics 4000
    or
Non-upgradable late 2014 version with dual core i5, 2.6 GHz, 8 gb of RAM and Iris graphic card.
I do short videos with a few effects, transactions, fades, titles, sometimes add CC. So which Mac mini do you recommend, guys?

as a windows/premiere user i can only speak to the hardware. 8gb ram in either should be fine for short & simple projects. the i7 is alot better, however the hd graphics 4000 is not as good as the iris and may require running the mercury engine as software only. this means no using the video card to help premiere run faster. anything outside of premiere using the cpu for day to day tasks would also appreciate the i7.  depending on the model of the iris graphics, it may be a couple times faster than the hd 4000 and therefore might work in premiere. according to adobe it lists the Intel Iris Graphics 5100 and 5200 as working  System requirements | Adobe Premiere Pro  if you get into other adobe apps, the graphics wont matter as much and the i7 will run faster.  it is faster video vs faster cpu, which to pick...

  • JVC deck not talking to iMac

    Hi,
I have a query regarding the JVC DR-DX5 mini-DV/DVD/HDD player/recorder deck. It has previously been used on a G4 Mac with the iMovie editing package with no problems and iMovie serial device control etc where it worked fine and I could import footage using the mini-DV deck. But plugging it into an iMac (OS X 10.4.7) results in the deck not being read by the computer. I have tried using the JVC with other G4s and it has worked, although not with all of them, so I cannot understand the inconsistency of this problem and espcially with the iMac. I've also tried it on other iMacs with no success too. All other decks work fine with the iMacs and it is only the JVC it is having problems with. Anyone know why this happening.
    Thanks

    Hi Ray:
    Welcome to discussions!
First-if your mac can control the camera but not see the video,
    *Open Garageband
    *Play a note or two
    *Close Garageband
    *Open iMovie
    The camera should work now-REALLY!!
