HD MOVs converted to HD AVIs via mpeg streamclips not pc compatible?

This is driving me crazy. You'd think it was the most basic thing but I can't get any info on why the HD AVIs created via Mpeg Streamclip will not play on my clients PC. He has the appropriate codex but the things won't play at all. The same HD MOVs i'm trying to convert to HD AVI play fine on his PC when I convert using Quicktime Pro but I can only get SD resolution on my created AVIs using quicktime. If anyone can tell me what is the best way to convert a HD MOV to a pc compatible HD AVI format that would be a wonderful thing. Please help
thanks

What codec are these MOVs in originally? If it is DVCPRO HD then as far as I know the only computers that have that codec on it are ones with FCP installed on them. Does your final file have to be an AVI or can it be something else?

  • Converting QT to AVI using Mpeg Streamclip

    Hello QT People,
Customer needs the finished video in AVI and in a size for web.
I am using MpegStreamclip and wondering what I choose for the compression choices that Streamclip is giving me ? DVC Pro ?
The QT movie is about 8 mins long, (720x480) 16x9 and there is very little movement in it. No quick action just a guy talking and moving slow.
    Thanks,
    Al

Bought the flip for mac plug in. There are a lot of options for diff bit rates. Should I choose constant CBR or variable VBR and when I watch the export using QT it is giving me a data rate (in the show info window) that is meaningless to me.
    Some background information to consider:
    1) The target bit rate always varies to some degree depending on the graphic complexity of the source content.
    2) Constant Bit Rate (CBR) encoding provides a more or less constant data rate at the expense of varying the quality dependent on the instantaneous graphic complexity of the source file. (Think of it as having a constant data rate with variable quality.)
    3) Variable Bit Rate (VBR) encoding varies the data rate in an attempt to keep the quality more or less constant. (Think of it as having a variable data rate with constant quality.)
    4) Fast start or streaming content always plays most smoothly if the playback data rate is kept lower than the target user's ISP average connection speed.
Since you did not indicate which version of Flip4Mac you purchases, I don't know if you have the option to actually set multi-pass average and peak bit rate targets. If not, then you must use the Quality slider to "guesstimate" single pass video data rates whether creating CBR or VBR conversions. (In this case for a 320x240 target resolution, you may want to try something like a quality setting of 25 and go up or down depending on the results for your particular source file. Be advised that when you test the file for playback, you will likely see two different data rates in the "Inspector" window. The first (lower reading) is for the raw cacheing WMV data which is partially decompresses as it is cached. When finished cacheing, the number will likely double in size as it switches to monitoring the partially decompressed data actually used by the QT player. As I did not know if your client's 550 (450 + 100) Kbps bit rate target was for the WMV content or the cached content, I suggested the initial 25 quality rating as a good starting point for your own preliminary output testing.
As to audio bit rate targets, it is more common on the mac to use CBR encoding for which the Flip4Mac codec has a 96 Kbps @ 44.1 KHz pop-up option that most closes your client's target.
I assume this should be enough information to get you started...

  • Error converting .mov to .avi using MPEG Streamclip

    Hi folks,
I'm trying to convert an .mov to an .avi for a client using MPEG Streamclip.  I have exported a high res master copy of the video from Final Cut (it's a .mov format is Pro Res 422 1920x1080 50i).
So when I bring this file into MPEG Streamclip, I select File > Export to Avi.... and then the following settings:
    DivX Codec
    Quality 75%
The compression starts and I instantly get the error "Compression Error"
When this started I installed the lastest version of DivX however since I am new to exporting as .avi I am completely lost.  I was able to get MPEG Streamclip to export using Apple Cinepak however the quality is awful so I am looking for another solution. I have also tried converting from my highest resolution MPEG-4 export, however I get the same result.
I am thinking that maybe my DivX codec isn't installed, or there is some problem with it? However I thought a new installation of DivX would fix this.
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks.

I would suggest exporting three small test files using H264 codec at three different rezolutions.
Play them back and if satisfied send them to your client to evaluate so they can decide what will work for them.
1280x720 H264  files are what we give to our clients these days as  "high quality' video.
Smaller files might be recommended for faster download and smoother playback on their system.

  • Convert a movie from Quicktime to MPEG4 in MPEG Streamclip

I want to convert a movie from Quicktime (.mov) which I created in Final Cut Express to MPEG4 in MPEG Streamclip to be able to see it on my Samsung TV. The problem is that the uncompressed movie, comverted only from Quicktome to MPEG 4, stops almost every moment on my Samsung TV. I have connected an external harddrive in NTFS there via USB 2.0 (Samsung TV cannot play movies in HFS etc.). The uncompressed movies are bigger than 4GB in Quicktime.
    http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/201112/20111208190112921/Web_GSDVBE UA_GER.pdf
I ask here how to use MPEG streamclip (free version; I use 1.9.2) so convert my movies into MPEG 4 so that I cann watch it on my Samsung TV.
I filled out "Bildrate" "30" but this did not work. I have chosen less quality but there are still - less - interruptions and I find it laborious to test different versions of less quality so that it might work.
I ask you also because I want to create my movies to give it to other people via the internet (f.i. via rapidshare) but I need a smaller size of my movies and do not know all the different TVs my friends have. I cannot imagine that it is not possible to create a movie in MPEG 4 that cannot be seen in many TVs via an external harddrive?

I know that I can do that also in FCE. It takes much more time to convert a movie into MPEG4 than to export it as uncompressed movie in QuickTime which I can use f.i. in iDVD to burn a DVD or watch it on my MBP.
But I don't know the versions of TVs of other people if I want to send them the movie via internet f.i. via mydrive.ch etc. which have limited space if used for free. So which settings to choose for an output in MPEG4?
For my one use it is o.k. if the movie can be seen correctly in MPEG4 on my TV but I can also watch it via my MBP on my TV via HDMI.

  • Exact import settings for .mov files via MPEG Streamclip?

Ok, as I mentioned in this other thread , I'm looking to import some files recorded at an odd resolution into FCE.
Resizing my 512x288 files to 720x480 looks like it works, as well as with my 640x480 ones (don't know how it'll ultimately mess with the quality)... but I did do a test using some footage from 3 different video sources with different native resoultions, a)720x480 Sony DV Cam, b) 512x288 captured by helmet cam on Archos PMA 430, and c) 640x480 captured on Canon SD600, as well as .jpeg photos at 640x480 res.
I changed the odd sizes (Archos & Canon) to 720x480 using MPEG Streamclip, resampling the sound uncompressed at 48 khz, using the Apple DV/DVCPRO NTSC compression option. Importing these files into FCE, I mixed them and the Sony standard footage, and a few pictures up on a timeline, rendered it and exported it to a QT file, then burnt a CD. It appears to have worked to my satisfaction.
My question is, before I go and convert about 60 5-10 minute clips to this 720x480 resolution for use in a full length documentary, are there any settings I should be ticking off on the MPEG Streamclip interface to maximize the likelihood that the final project will work as well as the test did?
Below are the options I selected in the test, which seemed to work:
    MPEG STREAMCLIP
    Compression: Apple DV/DVCPRO-NTSC
    Quality: 100%
    Sound: Uncompressed Stereo 48 KHZ
    Frame Size: 720x480
    Frame Rate: 29.97
    Checked boxes for:
    -Frame Blending
    -Better Downscaling
    -Interlaced Scaling
    Zoom: 100%
    X/Y: 1
    Center: 0,0
    Field Dominance: Upper field first
That's about it. I tried doing similar conversions in a trial version of DIVX Converter pro, but the quality was noticibly lower than in MPEG streamclip. Maybe I just had the wrong settings in it.
Anyway, Tom Wolsky has mostly got me on the right track in the last post "...so the material needs to be a .mov QuickTime file in DV NTSC, at 29.97fps, audio should be Linear PCM with a sample rate of 48KHz, and frame resolution of 720x480 using the CCIR601 digital video aspect ratio... be warned you're scaling up a very, very heavily compressed video stream, so it's going to look less than optimal when you make it DV. I can't believe they can do 192kbps at that frame rate, when DV, which is heavily compressed as well, is 3.5MB/sec."
I have no idea if what I described in my test is heavily compressed or not, so couldn't really say how the settings I mentioned above affect Tom's latter advice.
Anyway, any help would be welcome before I encode all these files. Thanks.
iMac 17-inch 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4)

I'm kind of confused because the only settings I could find on the Handycam for audio are 12 khz and 16 khz, and though I think I filmed them at 12, I've captured the footage at both within FCE... I'm not sure either have shown any probs when imported at 48 khz as yet. Not sure if that's because they are a multiple of 48 or I just got lucky. Either way, 1) does the audio bit rate the footage was captured at (12 khz) change to 16 if changed on the camcorder (or is it solely what the original was filmed in, period) prior to capture on FCE, 2) and if so or if not, how serious of a problem will it pose, if I do nothing and keep the FCE settings at the normal NTSC 48khz, in later stages of production considering there will be a lengthy timeline?

  • Convert quicktime to avi or mpeg 2

I have made a short movie with FCE. The client wants it on disc in either AVI or MPEG 1 or 2. Have tried exporting to quicktime and then saving as AVI, but it saves as .mov What am I doing wrong?
    Any help much appreciated

Hi again, I have now managed to change it from .mov to .avi by simply going to the hard drive, selecting it and changing the extension.
I have one other problem though, my file is 15 seconds long - 28.3 MB and so quality is not brilliant. The client will allow the file to get up to 600MB. How can I increase the size, and therefore quality of my video?
Do I have to go back to FCE?
    Thanks in advance

  • Clip in 16:9 from VOB to .mov via Mpeg Streamclip gets squished in FCE

Hello! This is a weird one, but I'm sure there's got to be a way -- any help much appreciated.
I've been given a DVD to edit. No raw footage.
    - I used Mpeg Streamclip 1.9 to open the DVD's VOB files
    - From Mpeg Streamclip, I exported to Quicktime using Apple DV/DVCPRO-NTSC compression. Here's the catch: The default size for that setting is 720 x 480, but that created a too-narrow, warped QT movie. So, I exported in 854x480 (16:9) and wound up with a beautiful mov file that looks just like the DVD. Clearly, our DVD was shot in 16:9.
    - In FCE Easy Setup, I have chosen both DV-NTSC and DV-NTSC Anamorphic, but either way, once in the Sequence the footage is vertically squished down to a short & wide size. (Note -- yes, I began a new sequence and re-imported after changing easy setup).
    - In hopes it was maybe just a canvas issue, i exported to qt -- still squished.
FYI, If I export from mpeg 2 in Apple Motion JPEG A at 16:9 my file is fine in FCE's canvas -- BUT it needs rendering. For this project I'll be doing tons of cuts and changes and I just can't have render issues. I'm considering rendering once, exporting and re-importing. But . . . there's got to be a better way I feel.
Anyone who can lend a hand, thanks in advance!!!

I May have found my own answer... From a reply to an older message, deeply burid in the archives. FROM NICK:
From the menu bar: Final Cut Pro > Easy Setup > DV-NTSC Anamorphic > OK.
Then: Sequence > Settings > Load Sequence Preset > OK.
I did this and the windows changed to 16:9...
Now, I assume I need to assign all 4:3 clips as anamorphic and position as necessary...
Hope it compresses and all... I have a Sept 1 deadline.
BY THE WAY... when I reread the manual after having been using FCP for several years now, it made MUCH more sense. I learned a bit about stuff I didn't know I had questions about... I suggest everyone do a reread once in a while... (or read it at least once if you never have)

  • Importing VTS.VOB files to imovie via MPEG Streamclip 1.7

About a year ago, I converted all of my home movies from the past 20 years to DVD via an external DVD Burner attached directly to my camera/VHS.
I recently converted to a Mac from a PC (And have never been happier ) and discovered imovie. I have been converting my DVD's into imovie with MPEG Streamclip 1.7 with no problem until I started trying to import more recent movies (i.e. movies I put on DVD directly from the camera as opposed to from a VHS).
Both types of files are VTS.VOB files but the ones imported from a camera are "unsupported file types". Does anyone know why this is and/or how to fix it? Thanks!

No, I have never used ffmpegX for this, but if you need to convert the VOB files back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, as well as the the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

  • AVI to Apple TV Conversion (mpeg Streamclip not working for me)

    Hi all,
I have .avi video I'd like to watch on Apple TV. I tried using MPEG Streamclip as I read about on the forum, but when I convert the file on the default settings all I get is audio; the picture is blank.
    Any thoughts?

I should add that I don't see any video when I import it to Streamclip, just the dice logo.
Wierd! In that case, it sounds like the problem may be MPEG Streamclip and its access of the QT components. Which version do you have installed? Do QT components comply with MPEG Streamclip recommendations? Is Perian installed and if so did you get rid of any potential component conflicts as recommended on its site?

    really appreciate any help

In addition to mpegStreamclip you must also have the Apple mpeg2 plugin :

    Hi:

  • Mpeg Streamclip not working on Mavericks

    Hi All.
    I have been using MPEG Streamclip for over a year successfully to clip video files into smaller clips ready for Final Cut Pro X. Recently this has not been working. My computer spec is;
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 288 MB
    Software  OS X 10.9.2 (13C64)
I have deleted and reinstalled the softwarw and I keep ending up with the dreaded spinning beachball. All I can do is force quit and try to start again. Any help will be appreciated.
    Thank you.

That would be an issue probably best taken up with Square 5:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/contact.html
Others have reported problems with Mavericks and Stefano hasn't issued an update for StreamClip in a year and a half, the last version being a beta for compatibility with Mountain Lion, so he may have abandoned development and may not respond.
    Regards.

  • Convert vob to aic through mpeg streamclip

and the file for a 10 minute clip off of a home movie goes from 660MB to 3.06!!! I know the file is compressed but movies I import from my camcorder take up about 3GB for an hours duration. What can I do to keep the quality up but the file size down?

The fact that you are using VOB files tends to tell me you are using standard definition video, as such you want to be exporting to dv or aic, each of which ill produce exports of around 12-13 GB per hour.

I would like to convert films from.AVI to MPEG. Is there a good easy program?

Yes! They are few of them. I use handbrake ( http://handbrake.fr/ ). Its free program with built in presets for apple products, subtitles support and good online comunity if help needed.  Other programs I know pople use are EM Total Video Converter and AVS Video Converter, but they are payd software. Some people use itunes/quicktimes for making ipod versions of avi movies but hanbrake works best for me.
