HD Multicast channels - 5.1?

I'm returning to BT TV after a stint with the enemy.  Beforehand, I was trialling fibre multicast with the Vision box.  The HD channels were sadly lacking any kind of 5.1 of either the Dolby or AAC kind.  Now I know that the FTA HD channels on YouView will have AAC 5.1, but do the Extra TV HD channels come with any kind of 5.1 stream?

Hi, yes....some are better then others so there is still quite a lot of standard DD2.0 audio broadcast but some do send DD5.1 and it seems to be on the rise. The BT Sport channels do a fair bit and there are a couple of the extra channels that seem to do 5.1 quite a lot.
Not sure which ones of the top of my head but I will have a better look tonight when I am home and report back...

All Multicast channels including BT Sports are blank at the moment.
I believe it has been reported (see BT Vision topic).

  • Multicast channels with optical sound output?

Success the channels have appeared finally.  Ican not get sound through my sound system however which is connected via optical cable.  The normal channels are fine but not the multicast.  Obviously this is a pain in the backside meaning i have to turn the tv speaker on for the new channels and off for the freeview ones.
I think i read in a thread it was a known fault but can anyone confirm?  Is it supposed to work but hasn't yet or is this the way it was planned to be?

id imagine given all the recent problems it will be delayed.  Im not going to bother watching them until its sorted as i just cant be bothered switching the tv speaker on and off with every channel change
Hows about using the phono outputs in the meantime? It's not as if the box does 5.1 yet which would require the optical. It would save you switching.

  • Multicast Channels Sound Drop Outs / Picture Pixel...

Had this issue for months now and its totally unique to broadband channels.  Its been a problem since leaving sky and joining BT in august.
Had around 5 engineers out who all say "Im the wrong type of engineer for this job, all i can do is check your broadband"
Sound just randomly drops out and picture quality on ondemand such as kids is getting noticeably worse.
Im on BT Infinity and get 79Mb DL which im told has no errors whenever an engineer checks however the guys on the phone tell me they can see my line is losing packets.  line correction has been applied and my speed was halved to 35Mb! This did NOT fix the problem.
Watching channel 4 HD at the mo and if im being honest its like the kids have the remote and keep pushing Mute.
Had a REIN test and nothing is interfereing
Im at the end of my tether
Oh and Both Box AND router have been swapped out
Its a Black BT Vision Box and BT Home Hub 4
Anyone had this issue and got it fixed?

I wonder if the issue might lie with the HH4. Do you have an HH3 to hand or could you borrow one to try?
I know that is not very helpful. The only other thing might be to swap to a YouView box.
I assume you have tried different ports in the HH4?

  • HD Channels freeze after 5 minutes

Since the launch of BT sport my HD channels including new BT sport freeze after about 5 minutes.  Help suggests I restart Home Hub and BT vision box. This gets the system going for the next 5 minutes.  Note this is the behaviour whether accessing BT sport or BBC1 HD.  I can actually get the channel to unfreeze by simply changing channels so its not really necessary to reboot all the boxes.  Unfortunately this approach does not work when trying to record your favourite football team.
Other details: BT Vision box is connected to Home Hub by powerline adaptors and I often get a message with error VMC999 complaining of a slow connection.
What is particularly irritating is that I have a new Samsung smart TV which displays all HD channels perfectly (via Freeview) and seamlessly streams HD on demand content by connecting wirelessly to the BT router.
I have made two attempts this week to contact BT (0800...) but abandonned them as there are'nt enough hours in the day.
So what I propose do is to "enjoy" my "free" BT sport channels (I have infinity account), cancel my BT Vision subscription (if BT ever pick up the phone) and subscribe to Netflix, Blinkbox, etc.
If anyone has any practical or technical suggestions please comment.

Did you manage to try using an ethernet cable rather than the power line adapters (PLA's)? Did this solve the problem? As others mentioned the PLA's are probably causing the VMC999 error. You need a reliable connection to the Vision+ box for the multicast channels to work smoothly. Being live channels they have to work in a slightly different way to on-demand content.
If after trying a cable you still get the multicast channels freezing after approx 5 mins every time you try to view/record them then you are not the only one. In that case I suggest you read this thread I created a while back. I got it fixed for my line, but it still seems to be affecting some customers now. Get your stopwatch out!

  • Lost HD & Sport channels on black BT Vision box

Hi, I was advised to do a factory re-set on my black BT Vision box because it was performing so poorly but since doing so I can no longer get my HD or sport channels (BT Sport 1 & 2, Sky Sports 1,2 & 5) back.
Prior to doing the reset I only had the HD & sport channels as I had such a poor aerial in the roof. Doing the factory re-set meant I had to have a functioning aerial to re-scan for all the channels so I fixed the aerial & whilst it means I can now get all the freeview channels I can't now get any of the HD or sport channels back that I pay for!
BT initially thought it was an issue at the exhange but having gone through several re-sets, re-scans, re-registers & re-boots they've finally agreed to get an engineer out.
    In another two weeks time!
Anyone got any suggestions as to what might be causing this & therefore how I might be able to fix without waiting for the engineer visit?
    thanks

Either the entitlements are missing or you are on the wrong version of the software. This can sometimes happen initially after a reset.
What does it say for Help & Settings > Settings > System Information > BT TV Release ?
If it ends in C (such as 8.7.1C) then you are on the version for using a viewing card.
If it ends in E (such as 8.7.1E) then you are on the version for multicast channels over broadband which is what you need.
If on the C version then try the following.
Help & Settings > Settings > System Information > Reset Registration
Help & Settings > Settings > System Information > Check for Upgrade
In my experience that usually encourages it to download and install the correct E version again.

  • Receiving channels 225 et al

Not sure if this question is related to the massive Multicast thread earlier (much of which is all g(r)eek to me, I'm afraid) but I'm surprised that I still can't receive the channels 225 and upwards. I still get a message saying that I do not have a compatible Freeview HD device. I do have a BT Youview box, Infinity and HH4.
I had assumed that this problem would be solved when my Youview box was enabled for multicast, which it was on Aug 1st. I can receive the BT Sport channels fine, in HD too, and the extra multicast channels are all listed (though I haven't subscribed).
So what's different about channels 225 et al? Are there already different multicast standards out there?

Those are nothing to do with YouView, BT or Multicast. They're channels designed to work on internet connected Freeview boxes and use technologies not supported by YouView.

  • Copper multicasting - what is actually going on

Hi my area is due to be upgraded to FTTP later this year thanks to BDUK. I've just been checking the BT Wholesale checker and over the last 72 odd hours since i last checked COPPER MULTICASTING has appeared to be active on the cabinet. Now i understand FTTC/P multicasting for stuff such as SkySports and the extra Vision channels but what will ADSL multicasting allow me to do or is this for some future unannounced service? At present i have Youview from BT but ovbiously i cant have BT Sport or the extra channels due to lack of infinity.
    Thanks
    Ben

Don't forget that the BT Wholesale Checker is showing which services are available through BT Wholesale to all ISP's. It is up to individual ISP's whether or not they pay BT Wholesale for particular services and package them up for sale to customers. One such service is TV Connect.
This article from early 2013 mentioned that as well as the fibre multicast version BT Wholesale were looking at launching an ADSL2+ copper multicast version of TV Connect as well. See paragraph 4.
    http://www.thinkbroadband.com/news/5800-bt-tv-connect-service-to-carry-live-tv-channels-over-wbc-net...
So I would guess that the Copper Multicast for your line means that, in conjunction with OpenReach, BT Wholesale have made that service available to ISP's in your local area. Whether or not BT Retail pay for it and offer it to customers is another matter.
As has already been mentioned, a limited number of BT Vision+ box customers have been receiving the live Sky Sports, BT Sport and ESPN channels in just SD over ADSL. I believe it was only done where multicasting had been set up by OpenReach and they certainly had to upgrade their BT Vision+ boxes to the multicast version of the software. Does that mean that BT Retail are already using the TV Connect ADSL multicast service? I don't know the answer to that as BT tend to keep these things close to their chest, but it does seem likely. Of course that wouldn't mean they have to use the same service for any BT Sport solution for BT Youview+ boxes on ADSL lines.
I receive fibre multicast channels over FTTC Infinity. The results for my line now includes the following.

  • YouView multicast picture pixelation when accessin...

    Hi,
I have a very strange problem on my YouView DRT1000 box. Whenever the hard drive is accessed to delete or watch recordings I have noticed that any multicast channel suddenly begins to pixelate and block badly. This can be seen in the preview window or any multicast recording in progress at the same time. This started at some time after Christmas, I cant be sure whether it coincided with a box update around this time.
If a number of recodings are deleted the multicast channel becomes so unstable that the only way to recover is to either change to another channel and back again or a 3 pin reset.
After the last update to 18.3.0 the problem seemed to have disappeared for a couple of days but has now returned.
Anyone else experienced this or any advice on how to fix it?

Indeed, my one does the same but I assumed the hardware is not up to the job?
If I delete a recording while recording a IPTV channel and the preview window is showing a IPTV channel the preview video will cough and splutter and it also normally glitches the IPTV recording it is making at that time.
Thus I normally only delete when the preview window is showing a Freeview channel or when the box is not recording IPTV - No glitches etc in this case.
The IPTV recordings are also normally from the HD channels making the loads a bit higher on the hardware.
    Standard YouView box BTW.

If i have two nic and open two Multicast socket (set network interface and join on proper interface ) both of them under Windows send multicast packets . Unfortunetly under linux the same code doesn't work. Packets are always send only via the same and one interface. Why ? Writicng conde in c under linux everything works fine so there is no problem with linux confguration .

    Hi,
    Problem solved.
I got the solution from another post.
Re: REP-51002: Bind to Reports Server rep failed
Here are the step I did.
Note : Please make backup for the following file : rwnetwork.conf
    - In file rwnetwork.conf, remove or commented the following
    <multicast channel="228.5.6.7" port="14021" timeout="1000" retry="3"/>
    - And then uncommented
    <namingService name="Cos" host="%NAMING_HOST%" port="%NAMING_PORT%"/>
    - replace the
%NAMING_HOST% with your computer name or specify an IP address
    %NAMING_PORT% with 14021
It should look like this :
    <namingService name="Cos" host="blahblah" port="14021"/>
    - I did not change the : name="Cos", since I do not understand what does it for
    - Save you changes.
    - Start the OC4J.
    - Find the location of : namingservice.bat (on Windows platform)
    - execute in the command line : namingservice.bat 14021
    - finally start the report in the web browser
    Note:
To shutdown the namingservice, use : namingservice.bat 14021 shutdown
    Regards.

  • BT Infinity 20Mbps slower after fixing BT Vision

    Hello
I had BT infinity & BT Vision installed about 3 weeks ago.
Speed estimate said 48Mbps. After install i got a solid 52Mbps which i was very happy with Also had BT vision installed at the same time which i didnt actually use until about 1 week ago.
When i tried using the BT vision the multicast channels - BBC 1 HD etc wouldn't work, it would take 30 - 60 seconds to get a picture. Obviously something was wrong.
I rang BT to after some tests escalated to level 2 support. An engineer turned up a few days later although when he went to test it everything worked perfectly. He said BT probably adjusted settings on their end which fixed it.
I tried a speed test straight away and my speed had dropped from 50 to 30 Mbps. Its been the same since and speaking to BT they don't really care as its within limits.
Would anyone be able to explain the drop in speed?
btw - I'm not talking about while i am watching TV on the vision box then its even slower...
Same with a wired or wireless connection.
Also my stats below seem to be different from others i've seen with the difference between max connection and actual download. Any comments appreciated

I've just noticed the same thing with me.
I have a Draytek router, and its data flow monitor is showing a constant downloading at around 20mbps, whether I'm watching any IP channels on Vision or not. Broadband speed does not go higher than 20Mbps or so.
What is this and why is it happening?
