HD Photo and Lightroom

Having read what's quoted below a question raises spontaneously, is HD Photo support planned in next point release of LR too?
(from
http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2007/mar07/03-08HDPhotoPR.mspx)
"Microsoft also announced the beta release of a set of HD Photo plug-ins for Adobe® Photoshop® software, developed with the help of Adobe Systems Inc. These plug-ins enable users to both read and write HD Photo files from within Adobe Photoshop software, and include support for high dynamic range pixel formats. The plug-ins support both the CS3 and CS2 versions of Adobe Photoshop software, and will be available for Windows Vista and Windows® XP, as well as Mac OS X (Universal Binary). A beta version of the Windows plug-in is available today for download at the Microsoft® Download Center at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads. Microsoft expects to release finished plug-ins, which will be free of charge, in approximately 60 days. "

I am very curious about this as well. I am currently scanning years of negative photos and need a compromise between Jpeg/file size and the quality of TIFF. HD Photo sounds like the ticket.
Now that I just bought Lightroom, I would also like to know if there are plans for support of HD Photo.

People who have Photoshop, but don't have Lightroom, need ACR so that they can use Raw files. Without ACR they could do nothing with those (they may also like having ACR so that they can work on other kinds of image using the same kinds of adjustments and techniques, as are used with Raw files).
People who have Lightroom, can get access to Raw files regardless whether ACR is present or not. They can use Lightroom on other kinds of image also, using the same methods. LR can pass images directly into Photoshop without passing via ACR (or else does so transparently, which amounts to substantially the same thing).
ACR does not, strictly speaking, even need to be installed for this external editing to happen. In fact, not even PS needs to be - since a different image editor can be used instead, while still retaining the Adobe Raw conversion etc.
Lightroom "subcontracts out" specialised external tasks, in this workflow, but is still your "main contractor": the image is otherwise located, viewed, managed, adjusted/presented and output entirely using LR.
So IMO we can divide image processing into:
operations that involve pixels and layers and layer masks and adjustment layers etc (of the kind done inside Photoshop)
operations that involve parametric edits (of the kind done in ACR where you are not using a Lightroom based workflow; otherwise, done inside Lightroom)
When PS is called in, that's because those tasks are impossible or unsuitable to do in Lightroom. But those tasks can't be done in ACR either - by definition, since LR and ACR have exactly the same image processing "feature set".
Lightroom is irrelevant to the Bridge + ACR + PS workflow. This workflow requires both your PS and your ACR to be current enough, to support your Raw format etc.
ACR and Bridge are irrelevant to the LR + (image editor) workflow. It is in this case, only LR which needs to be current enough to support your Raw format etc.

  • How do i move photos and catalog to a new drive and have lightroom make the same move

I am trying to move all my photos to a new drive with different drive letter.  I know I can do a backup and restore inside PSE13 to perform that.  However, I also have Lightroom 5 on the current setup.  How would I now use the new location for the photos in lightroom if they are already moved by PSE?
    Hope this makes sense!

I don't recommend the Time Machine or Migation Assistent approach. The first tneds to be very slow and the second often carries baggage that is probably best not transferred to a new computer.
Lightroom doesn't use activation, therefore, can be installed on your new Mac without having first removed it fom the old. Your images and catalogs can be copied across to the new Mac using an a portable disk drive as the transfer medium. Typically, on Mac computers, the catalog and image files are stored in the Pictures folder. If this is where you have them then then copy them to the same location on the new Mac. Once copied you can open the catalog folder then double click on the .lrcat file to launch Lightroom.

I have been using Lightroom 5 for 2-3 months now and all worked well, up until today's effort to import a new set of photos. I am working on a Mac with Yosemite 10.10.1.

Go to the bibliothec module, select the folder, right click on the folder and hit synchronize

after some sorting out your article, I clicked on a question mark with the message find the missing folder.  This brought me to a page where I could choose a folder by year and click on it.  The question marks disappeared and the photos were available.  In some cases I had to click on the year folder for each subfolder by date.
The find missing folders message did not bring me to the finder window in which I could click on folders in the hard drive itself.  I appreciate your help big time!!

  • Help!! I have used an external hard drive on my Macbook Pro to save photos and edit.  Now I have purchased a desktop Apple machine, and new copy of lightroom, however, I cannot see the files on the desktop using the external hard drive.

Hi, I am wondering if someone knows if I can open/(how I see) the files I have saved in Lightroom on my Mac laptop, on my new desktop?

You want to transfer the catalog file to the new desktop using your operating system, and open that by double-clicking on it. Then reconnect the photos to Lightroom (if necessary) by these instructions: Adobe Lightroom - Find moved or missing files and folders

  • Lightroom has lost my photos and fouled up Bridge. Help!!

    (1) Today when I started up Lightroom I went to Library and discovered that none of my folders are listed. So I went under 'Import', and they are all there, but all of the folders are empty. I have not moved any folders, photos in over a year. How do I get my folders back?
    (2) Lightroom has fouled up Bridge. Now when I use Bridge, all of the photos are missing from their folders, and what I see is a Lightoom Icon for an .lrcat file. If I double click on that, the photos open and are displayed, but in LIGHTROOM!
So it's a double whammy. I can't use Bridge anymore to open my photos in Photoshop, and I can't use Lightroom anymore because it can't find any of my photos, but I can use Bridge to open Lightroom and display my files. What is going on?

I think you gave me the clue ssprengel. Most of the files dated 2014 were giving me the problem. A few were not. All of the folders with other names were fine. When I tried to open one of the .lrcat files by double clicking on it, the file was huge, and no thumbnails were showing until I clicked on All Photos and they appeared, a huge jumble, some from over a year ago. Each one seems to be a new catalog. So I checked my settings, and Lightroom WAS NOT set to open the previous catalog. I don't know how that setting got changed. Anyway, all seems normal now, and in Bridge too. Just to be on the safe side, I moved all of those problematic 2014 files to another hard disk just in case.
So, all seems good now. Even though I've been using Lightroom for years now, I figure I had better go back and check out those videos that others recommended. That was good advice too, so thank you to all.

  • ???  I just installed Lightroom 5 from Amazon for my Mac with 10.10.1 software.  When I open it I get: "An error occurred when attempting to change modules".  It won't import photos and has no side panels under Library.  What should I do?

I Nearly bought from Amazon too but I found a thread from Adobe stating that the only recognized outlet for lightoom is themselves and other outlets serial numbers will not be guaranteed.
THat at was sufficient for me to buy direct from Adobe, hope you get it sorted.

  • I just got a new Mac Mini, and now when I try to import photos into Lightroom, iPhoto try to load them first, then Lightroom can't find the files.  Big problem.  What to do?

I just got a new Mac Mini, and now when I try to import photos into Lightroom, iPhoto ties to load them first, then Lightroom can't find the files.  Big problem.  What to do?

    Simple:
File -> Export to get your photos out of the iPhoto Library. In the Export dialogue you can set the kind to Original and you'll get back exactly what you put in.
Apps like iPhoto2Disk or PhotoShare will help you export to a Folder tree matching your Events.
Once exported, you can then trash the iPhoto Library - just drag it from the Pictures Folder to the trash and empty it.
After that, if you're entirely neurotic about it, just put the iPhoto app in the trash and empty it.

  • What is the best way to enlarge a part of a photo in lightroom?  How much cn you enlarge it and get

what is the best way to enlarge a part of a photo in lightroom?  How much cn you enlarge it and get an acceptable result?

The way I would do it would be to crop the image so that it only displays what you want, then export that image and specify the dimensions. You will have to experiment with different export sizes to determine what would be acceptable for your situation. You might be more forgiving or more demanding than anyone who would venture to answer that question. That's the nice part about digital photography; you can experiment to your heart's content until you get the result you are looking for.

  • I've edited my NEF photos in lightroom and have tried to export to a formatted CD. When I try, I have several issues. I either see in the top left corner that the files are ready to go to CD but there is no further instruction or I get the pop up message

I've edited my NEF photos in lightroom and have tried to export to a formatted CD. When I try, I have several issues. I either see in the top left corner that the files are ready to go to CD but there is no further instruction or I get the pop up message that the files are offline or missing??

Just for background, in what format are you exporting your images?  Also, are you able to export them to your hard drive in your chosen format?  I haven't tried exporting directly to CD, but if you're able to export to hard drive and copy to CD, that may be one solution.

  • Different file count between Photo Elements 12 and Lightroom 5.

    To Whom it might concern:
When I check properties the file count in Photo Elements 12 is different than that of Lightroom 5.
In one case Photo Elements shows 743 files and 51 folders and lightroom shows 734 files.
I counted each a every file and found Lightroom to have the correct count and Elements the same count
but properties shows a count of 743.
    Please answer.

  • Aperture to Lightroom move, super large number of photos and videos

Hi everyone. I am moving my photo and video collection from Aperture libraries to Lightroom. Editing is so much better in lightroom, but with image organization I run in into tons of problems. The biggest one is size. I have around 500,000 photos and videos. I have only imported 7,000 and preview catalogs are getting huge, 16Gbs right now. Would love suggestions on large photo/video storage management.

Just one thing for now: preview data size is controlled by automatically expiring 1:1 previews (or manually deleting them), and making sure standard previews are no larger than necessary - they can be medium or "low" (not that low) quality, and do not need to be larger than your monitor size (and can be substantially smaller, if preview storage is a primary concern). Also, note: previews can be relocated to another disk if the one where the catalog has to be isn't big enough - just make a link in the catalog folder to where the previews will actually be - not recommended except as a last resort: generally better to get a bigger drive (or relocate entire catalog folder) if possible..
PS - Don't make 1:1 previews upon import unless you really need them.
