HD Preset sees cropping or margins on HDready TVs.

Premiere CS3
I am desperate to resolve this apparent simple task.  I need to know, why does Premiers presets not fit HDready TV's ?
See the results from three different TV’s further below.
Just what should I make the width and height of a project (and what pixel aspect ratio ?) to have videos played on PAL dvd players fit a HD ready screen ?  I need to put stills into the video. What size and pixel aspect ratio should they be made ?
The advice I followed sees margins and cropping. What other settings should I be choosing in Photoshop and then in Premiere and in TMPGenc ?
I am using Pshop CS2 WinXP, I have an LCD monitor. Client has LCD HDready TV PAL. (Native res 1533 x 768px.)  the standard dvd video is to also play on friends LCD TVs. (they don’t have blueray players), all are dvd players with scart. People are buying LCD but keeping existing dvd players and thus using scart, picture quality is less than my Wega !
Why don’t the suggested presets from another thread create videos that fit HDready screens ?
I have need of making stills or video fit the screen of HD Ready TV’s (dont we all ?? !!!) and I am following advice that said use either 720x576 or 1280 x 720 or 1920x 1080 and ignore the screens default resolution. The 1920x1080 is the size of full HD TV’s and the 720x576 is not 16:9 ratio so probably intended for non HD Ready TV’s though I tried it anyway, picture quality on HDready was poor and it still saw cropping so it must be the 1280x720 then for the HDready.
To test this out, I created a chart of 1280 x 720pixels Square pixels in photoshop, saving as tiff.
It has a square grid of black lines on a white background (20 squares wide - each is thus 64pixels) and circles at left middle and right. At the sides are 5 pixel increment rulers heading into the chart with 0 at picture edge.
We want our stills or video to fit the HD Ready screen without distortion.
Thus the goal is to get the test image to fit the screen and see all edges as 0.
I went New Project in Premiere and chose the suggested 1280 x 720 size 25fps which exists as a preset.
Imported the tiff into the timeline. Made a video and authored it in TMPGencAuthoringWorks. It saw it as 720x576 and no options existed to make it otherwise. I chose Progressive.
Playing it on DVD players connected to LCD TVs we get anything but a fit to screen ! Why ?
Note they all are using scart, both shops and private TV’s. Would a HDMI enabled dvd player connected via hdmi see a fit with 0 at all four screen edges and perfect grid and circles, and no ghosting on the verticals, and the 1pixel zebra chart visible ?
I also noticed that text created in premiere was of better quality than Photoshops text in the tiffs, which on the Panasonic had jpg type artefacts around it, but not on the Wega CRT. Why ?
Panasonic HD Ready 32inch  scart DVD to TV.
Auto     0 on all four sides so picture all in but with Black margins 3inch sides and 2 inch top/bottom.
16:9     0 on all four sides so picture all in but with Black margins 3inch sides and 2 inch top/bottom.
Zoom 1    0 and 0 left and right,  25 top and 20 bott, 4 inch wide black margins at sides.
Zoom 2    0 and 0 left and right, 25 top and 20 bottom so some cropping, circles a little stretched north/south
Zoom 3   0 and 0 left and right, 100 top and 100 bottom so 200 pixels lost in top/bott crop, circles heavily stretched north/south
14:9   0 all four sides with 5inch black side margins and 1inch black top/bott margins, circle heavily stretched north/south
4:3 though not an obvious choice for filling a 16:9 screen, gave 0 all round and 8inch black left/right and 2inch black top/bott.
Best then was Zoom 2 but 40 pixels lost north/south.
All vertical lines had ghosted lines either side, horiz lines ok.
LG (LH2000) 42inch LCD  scart dvd to TV.
16:9   0 all four sides with black margins. Circles slightly stretched north/south
Full Wide   0 all fours sides with 3.5inch margins left/right and black margins top/bott.
Zoom   0 at left, right and bott but 20 at top. Black margins at left, right and bott but not at top. Most odd ! Circle stretched north/south
Original   0 all four sides and black margins 3.5 inch sides and 1.5 inch top/bott with Circles slightly stretched north/south.
Again All vertical lines had ghosted lines either side, horiz lines ok.
Samsung 32inch LCD scart dvd to TV.
Margins measured also using the pixel ruler of the chart, though its obvious its been compressed, else e.g. the 1024px margins of 4:3 take up almost all the screen width which they don’t in fact.
16:9   0 all four sides with black margins 202px wide at sides and 197px tall at top/bott. Circles distorted east/west.
Zoom   0 all four sides with black margins 202px wide sides and 90px tall top/bott. Circles distorted north/south
4:3   0 all four sides and black margins 512 pixels wide sides (6.25inches) and 240 pixels tall top/bott (3.25inch)
Autowide    0 all four sides with black margins 202px wide sides and 250px tall (3.25inch) top/bott. Circles distorted east/west.
Again All vertical lines had ghosted lines either side, horiz lines ok.
A second chart featured zebra crossings (alternate black/white lines) vert and horiz orientated of sizes 1,2 3 and 4 pixel line weights. All TVs were able to show the 3 pixel sets, in that the 1 and 2 were blurred and one could see the 3 was alternate black/white, not pin sharp though but somewhat woolly !
Playing the 720x576 Sq Pixel Interlaced chart :-
Sony Wega digital CRT 42inch: (scart dvd to TV):-
Smart   15left, 5 right, 54 top and 58 bottom with circles slight stretch middle east/west and more stretched for the outer ones. No Margins
14:9   20 left  0 right, 60 top and bottom. Black margins at sides of 72px width left and 55px width right. Circles ok.
Zoom   20 left, 14 right, 80 top and 85 bottom, No margins. circle ok middle and some stretch east/west for outer two.
Wide   20 left, 13 right,  15 top and 24 bottom No Margins with all three circles stretched east/west.
4:3    20 left, 0 right, 20 top and 25 bottom. Black margins at sides 128px width. Circles and grid almost perfect. Crazy though to be losing one side of image.
No ghosting of vert lines.
Panasonic LCD 32inch (same as in earlier test above..clients TV)
Auto 0 sides and 30top, 15 bottom, circle distorted east/west. No black margins
16:9   0 sides and 20 top, 15 bottom, circle distorted east/west. No black margins
Zoom 1   0 sides 90 top, 85 bott no black margins, Circle OK
Zoom 2   90 sides and 90 top, 85 bottom. Circle distorted east/west. No black margins
Zoom 3   90 sides and 16 top and bottom. Circle slight distort north/south, quality poor.
14:9   0 sides and 60 top, 55 bottom. Circle ok. Black margins sides (50pixel wide)
4:3   0 sides and 20 top, 15 bott. Circle ok. Black margins sides 120px width (3inch)
16:9 probably best but with cropping top and bott and distorted circles east/west so nothing here of use.
Vert lines ghosted either side
Nothing of any use.

Hi, Thanks for the advice.
How do you wish to show your project on an HDTV?.
Client has dvd player (not bluray capable) via scart and hopefully soon a hdmi lead.
Currently  tried 1280 x 720 square pixel images created in photoshop (hence sq pixels) to suit the input preset of PAL 1280 x 720  25fps Square Pixel and going File>Export>Adobe Media Encoder and choosing MPEG2-DVD and  PAL Progressive Widescreen High Quality which yields 720 x 576. This seemed suitable for a non HD playing device. It looked good on screen in TMPGencAuthoringWorks. Am I right in saying people buying LCD HDready TV's need to get a new dvd player capable of HD so as to make the most of the image quality of their TV ? Most seem to buy LCD and plumb them into their existing dvd players !
As the dvd player is not capable of bluray output, choosing this seemed logical BUT trying out all screen aspect settings on the Panasonic LCD HDready TV sees the following cropping of our 1280x720 test image with grid and circles, the cropping we got is simply unacceptable. (192 left /right means 192 on each side totalling 384)
On a plus note, quality improved, now seeing horiz black/white lines 1 pixel line weight, vert ones were a little woolly though. 2px test lines were ok. Thats an improvement over only 3 beijg best. Finding the Adobe Media Encoder has seen some benefit !
Auto  55 left /right ( that’s 8.6% lossage) and 25 top and 20 bott (6.25% lossage), Circles OK
16:9  ditto
Zoom 1  55 left /right (8.6%) and 105 top/bott (29% lossage) Circles stretched vert
Zoom 2    192 left /right (30%) and 100 top/bott (27%) Circles ok
Zoom 3   192 left/right (30%) and 168 top/bott (47%) ..a disaster !
14:9   55 left/right with black margins each 96px ,  75top and 65 bott (19%) Circles stretched vert.
4:3   55 left/right with black margins each 192, 25top and 20 bott (6.25%) Circles stretched vert.
Auto and 16:9 best but we ned to see 0 on all four sides else we are losing people out of the picture ! ...or should we add black margins to it ! ?
Any answers to the following gratefully received.
What should I choose for PAL dvd video to HDreadyTV. ?
1) Pixel width and height of still (tiff) ?
2) Pixel aspect ratio of still (tiff) ?
3) Preset for input source or custom setting and what to choose ?
4) Adobe Media Encoder output settings:-
     a) MPEG2 or MPEG2-DVD
     b)  PAL option ..which one to pick with regards pixel width/height, fps, interlacing or progressive, quality effect on pixels and our desired goal ?
     c) or custom output and what ?

  • Presets for cropping in CC

I've installed CC and wanted to make presets for cropping. Like 20 by 30 300PPI and more sizes.
But when I want to choose one of them, there only appears one size for all.
How can I make it work? Somebody can help me please?
    Thanks, Judith

Maybe I have mad it too quickly after each other.
But when I choose one of the presets I have made. Then you see 19, bij 12,7 by each of them. Just like the second screenshot.

  • Elements 5 and preset metric crops

I am using PSE3 and have setup my own crop presets as PSE3 does not have metric versions.
As it is a pain to reset each crop on change of size I used Photoshop CS to make my own "Default ELTool Presets.tpl" file. Then replaced the version in C:\Program Files\Phtoshop Elements 3.0\Required with my version. I have A5, A4 and A3 vertical and horizontal presets added.
If I cannot get metric presets I will most likely not buy 5; I tend to use mine alot.
Can anyone please tell me if Elements 5 give metric crops, if so which, if not can custom crops be saved or if not would my workaround still work in 5?

Still inches, and no A3, A4 or A5! Adobe has made a tiny little step towards metric in specifying print sizes in cm, just came in one of the last beta builds. But not in the crop tool. We try very hard to make Adobe understand our need for metric sizes, but they are extremely hard to dance with on that matter :-(

  • Can' t open from day to night a picture from LR 4/5 to PSCC if a preset/filter/crop has been used.

    Hello
don t know how to solve that. It happened without having made any change   or update; like that  from day to night , It stopped working.  If I crop, use a LR preset using a graduated filter or plug in filters  and try to open the image in PS ( cmd +e) the picture opens  completely wrong in colors.
This happens if I use a filter ( VSCO preset LR version worked like a charm so far or a LR preset with graduated filters ) or even a crop eeven if in this case the picture does not even open up in PS.
As far as the crop only is concerned, the workaround is to crop the image in PS; as far a s filters , well I have no solution. If I use LR in his basic (without filters, no problems
    I am using the following
    LR 5.3 and LR 4.2
    PSCC
    Mac 10.9
I do not know how to finish my work and if someone can give me a clue, I appreciate...thanx

The post I was responding to said,
"Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps. "
Somehow, I think that means Windows...
I've tried Firefox in Safe Mode - it makes no difference.

  • Crop not in "New Develop Preset"?

Crop is conspicuously absent from the preset setup.  Any reason for this?  I'm trying to reduce the number of edit passes I have to make on a series of action shots, and a preset that crops would eliminate a step.

For my purpose it doesnt have to be exact at that point. In gallery mode these subjects are in about the same place in the frame, but are too small to evaluate.  It would be nice to apply a mass crop from gallery mode using a preset, so they can be more easily seen.  I would then adjust the picks in a later pass.  It looks as if any cropping from gallery mode (as well as certain other edit functions) is intentionally designed out of the preset setting dialog.

  • Printed margins are bigger than it is viewed in adobe reader

    Hi all:
I convert some html pages  to pdf with acrobat x pro, then I crop those margins to a small size, it looks fine in adobe reader , but when I print the pdf out , the margins of left and right are much bigger so that the font size is so small. I check none / fit to printable area with page scaling option, it doesn't work. Is there a solution to it?
      Page size is A4.
      thanks.
      Kurt

    Thanks for the reply.
Well, I managed to print out the PDF file from my flat-mate's PC on a laser printer, so I'm guessing that the problem lies either with the Mac version of Adobe Reader 7 or the HP printer driver. As the printer copes fine with Preview, it might be Reader's fault.
But this does mean that all hope isn't lost on my project using Pages.
A few more investigations are needed I think.

  • Can you set editing presets?

Hello! This is my first time on the support forums, so go easy on me if I do something wrong. To explain my predicament, I make YouTube videos, and I use Final Cut Pro as my editing software. When I make videos, I often have a template. This means that the template is static while other clips that play sit on layers above it. I have to put these clips in the same place every time. The only problem with this is that I have to individually crop the area of the clips that will sit on the template and place them where I want each time. Mainly, my question is if there is a way to set a preset for it. What I mean by this is, can I set a preset that crops out the video in the same place every time if I set it to do so, or places the video in the same spot every time. This is a feature that was in my last editor on my Windows machine, Sony Vegas Pro, and it is the only thing that I miss about it. If there is a way to do this, I would love to know! Also, I can clear up what I mean even more if there is confusion. Thanks for the help!

If you have Motion you could create templates using drop zones, which I believe would accomplish what you're trying to do.  You can also include masks to display only part of the clip. These templates could then be published and would appear in the FCP X effects browser as editable templates.

  • Layout margin "Before" and "After settings

I'm working on a document where I sometimes need to alter the preset upper and lower margins of a given page. I can use the "Before" layout margin setting to move the text box tops downward but trying to move the bottoms of the boxes upward using the "After" setting seems to do nothing. Isn't that what that setting is for?
    G5 1.8 Dual   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   MacBook

The Before and After paragraph settings are for adjusting the spaces between paragraphs. Put you curser in a paragraph and adjust the Before setting and the space between that paragraph and the preceeding one increases or decreases. Adjust the After setting and the space between that paragraph and the next one changes accordingly.
If you want to adjust the margins of the page, as well as the header and footer, use the Document Inspector.
If your're using text boxes, just move the box as needed. To move the entire box it should be set for Fixed on Page.

  • Presets for Plugs like Line6 ??

    Hi!
Maybe some of you know, that on the Line6 Page you can search for sounds and load the found preset to your Line6 Product. For example I like a Johnny Cash song, I tip the titel in and wuup - the sound is there and it realy is like the original.
Now I wonder, if there is something similar for the synth and plugs for Logics MainStage. If I would like to have a keybaord sound like the Artist "Moby" or a hammond sond like a "The doors" if there is a page, where people add there presets, that listen like the original. Thanks a lot Martin

  • Pdf Margins

    Hi,
I am trying to use BIP to print 1099 forms. The generated output has a big upper margin which causes the address line not to appear in the envelope window.
I cropped the margin in the pdf template but was of no use. In an rtf template we could goto page setup and set the page margins . Can somebody tell me how to control page margins in a pdf template
    thanks
    Shri

There is a note on metalink (409204.1). They ask us to crop the final output and print. But this solution is difficult to implement as we print a lot of forms.

  • Photoshop CS6 Crop

Whenever I create a preset crop and then apply that preset to crop down an image, ie make image smaller than it is, although the physical measurements of the image reduce to the specified size, the pixel dimensions grow by almost 2.5X on both axis. This results in a larger file size than should be the case. How can I resolve this, without using the perspective crop which I have been doing as a work around?
    Any solutions appreciated.

Maybe the crop preset specifies a PPI that's about 2.5 times as great as the pre-cropped document's PPI.
For example, an initial document with 72 ppi and crop preset with 175 ppi resulting in a cropped document with 175 ppi.

  • Burning a 4:3 DVD using 16:9 FCP Project

I have a project that is HD (16:9) but I need to burn an SD DVD in 4:3 (full screen, not letterbox.) Is there a way to do this? I essentially just want to cut off the sides of the video. Yes, all my graphics were built with 4:3 in mind. Thanks!

No, there is no way to automatically do this in DVD SP.
You have a number of options. Your best option is to keep it 16:9 Letterbox. "Full screen" videos suck, given that almost half the video is being cut away.
Your next best option is to create a new SD sequence in FCP. Drop your HD sequence into that, scale, and then slide the video to the left or right depending on where the action is during the scene.
Your third option (worst) is to simply bring your HD video into Compressor, create a new MPEG-2 preset that crops off the sides of the video.

  • Aspect ratio question

    Hello all,
this footage Im using imported into FCP as 720 x 480 regular ntsc footage. In final cut the video displayes with a letterbox. Unfortunately I went ahead and edited everything before asking questions about this letterbox. So now im running into problems, I know Im doing this after the fact, but I cannot recapture and re-edit (although my suspicion is that the black bars were generated in the camera and thus were captured as part of the footage). Im am trying to build a dvd with this edited sequence in DVDSP.
I figured out that the actual footage (not including the black bars) is 720 x 360, which is very weird, I know. So to have my movie display correctly on a wide-screen and 4:3 tv, it would have to be at a 16:9 aspect ratio.
OK, Ive tried so many things, but I cant get it right.
1st, I made a new sequence in FCP changed this sequence to anamorphic. Then I copied my regualr sequence and pasted into new sequence, then I right click and choose remove all attributes/distort. It removes the letterbox but it sqeezes the footage vertically since my footage is 720 x 360, not 720 x 404... So this wont work...
Then I exported from FCP directly into compressor and I chose a 16:9 NTSC preset and crop 38 of top and 38 of bottom. The footage is now not sqeezed in any way and only a small letterbox remains (which I can live with) but the problem is, no matter what setting I use: DVD 90 minute best quality or increase bit rate, change gop, the footage looks aweful. Any time there is just a slight movement it has horizontal bars through it. Now, Its not the cropping, because it does it without cropping as well.
    My questions are:
Is compressor just not that good? because when I ue a reference quicktime and let DVDSP do the encoding it looks great.
If I cant use compressot to crop how can I get a final m2v file that has a aspect ratio of 16:9 and doesnt get sqeezed...
Im sorry for this long post, just wanted to be clear on everything, please help!
    Thank you! Danielle
Im using FCP 5.1, compressor 2 and DVDSP 4, footage came from regular dv camera (obviously set to some weird widesreen format) and I captured it directly into FCP

    Thank you for your reply!
It worked! thank you so much, ive been struggling with this for a while now! I defenitely have a loss of quality, I will have to watch it on my big plasma at home to make sure it is still ok.
Can I ask you another question?
When I export using compressor I get horizontal lines in the video, no matter the settings, Ive tried: dvd best quality 90 minutes 16:9 preset and customized a dvd 16:9 one with very high bit rates, and different GOP settings.
when I export with quicktime reference and import into DVDSP, it looks much better with their build in encoder.. since I have this loss of quality now, any suggestions on my compressor settings?
Ive already resigned to 2 DVD's with the main movie on one and the extras on the other, so we can go pretty high with bit rates.
    Thanks again!
    Danielle

  • Image size and profiles in Aperture;

    version 3.0.3.
First problem is I can't see where I can fix the image size before getting to the print page! I prefer to do this and preview it before printing, as I used to in PS and then Lightroom.
Other problem is that Aperture tells me to turn off my printer colour management, but I can't get to such a control from the HP B9180 driver that is now part of OSX (10.6).
    Help please!

    Pat,
You don't need to set the image size as such. The image prints on the page according to two sets of criteria:
    1. Whether you set dpi to custom or a specific value, and
    2. The page margins you set either as a printing once-off, or as a new printing pre-set.
For example, I print "arty" photos in a portrait format on A4 matte paper. Left and right margins are around 3cm, top margin is around 3cm, bottom margin is around 5 cm (all numbers are from memory...). I have a title just below the image.
I created this particular page setup for a certain photo and liked it so much I saved it as another print preset. Any photo I print using that preset fits within the margins defined. The very next print might be the same photo, but this time printing A3+ on Ilford Galerie Smooth Pearl. Choose the photo, select the relevant print pre-set, print. Re-sizing is irrelevant - the print in both cases is coming from the processed raw at maximum resolution.
