HD read-write problems recording more of 16 audio tracks

I've a strange problem that i don't have in digital performer with rosetta!
When i record more of 5-6 track...for example 16...when i stop the registration....logic is blocked for 30-40 seconds....and then it begin to create overview!
in this time i've see the hd read and write at 5 mb/sec....
It isn't normal!!! I've tried all the settings of audio driver and buffer....but nothing change
anybody can help me?!?

1 : Waht sample Rate are u using -
2 : I have disk Journaling on and record @ 96KHZ - and can do 64 tracks simoultaneously (split on 4 drives)
3 : Is your recording drive very fragmented if so defragment it
4 : Dont EVER record to your system drive - too much activity going on there
5 : Set your Max Recording time to 10 minutes in the "Set record path" dialog in Logic ( If you have not set the max rec. time Logic will "Freeze" all available space on the disk for the recording and that can lead to problems especially if u aint using a dedicated hard drive to wirte your audio to
6 : it is very important to have a dedicated drive to record audio to - being an internal SATA or Firewire 400/800 - as long as this drive is being used to record only...This has solved many problems for me...

Oracle coherence first read/write operation take more time

I'm currently testing with oracle coherence Java and C++ version and from both versions for writing to any local or distributed or near cache first read/write operation take more time compared to next consecutive read/write operation. Is this because of boost operations happening inside actual HashMap or serialization or memory mapped implementation. What are the techniques which we can use to improve the performance with this first read/write operation?
Currently I'm doing a single read/write operation after fetching the NamedCache Instance. Please let me know whether there's any other boosting coherence cache techniques available.

In which case, why bother using Coherence? You're not really gaining anything, are you?
What I'm trying to explain is that you're probably not going to get that "micro-second" level performance on a fully configured Coherence cluster, running across multiple machines, going via proxies for c++ clients. Coherence is designed to be a scalable, fault-tolerant, distributed caching/processing system. It's not really designed for real-time, guaranteed, nano-second/micro-second level processing. There are much better product stacks out there for that type of processing if that is your ultimate goal, IMHO.
As you say, just writing to a small, local Map (or array, List, Set, etc.) in a local JVM is always going to be very fast - literally as fast as the processor running in the machine. But that's not really the focus of a product like Coherence. It isn't trying to "out gun" what you can achieve on one machine doing simple processing; Coherence is designed for scalability rather than outright performance. Of course, the use of local caches (including Coherence's near caching or replicated caching), can get you back some of the performance you've "lost" in a distributed system, but it's all relative.
If you wander over to a few of the CUG presentations and attend a few CUG meetings, one of the first things the support guys will tell you is "benchmark on a proper cluster" and not "on a localised development machine". Why? Because the difference in scalability and performance will be huge. I'm not really trying to deter you from Coherence, but I don't think it's going to meet you requirements when fully configured in a cluster of "1 Micro seconds for 100000 data collection" on a continuous basis.
Just my two cents.

Is it possible on iMovie to have more than two audio tracks? Is there a way I can add more? If so, how?

At the recommendation of Matthew Morgan and others in this forum, I took about twenty minutes and checked out garage band.
You can click on a movie tab, in which you can import your imovie project. Garage band gives you the option of, at least, 8 simultaneous tracks. You can record from your mic, mind you that's a bit tricky, you'll have to read the garage band manual, but like I said, it only took twenty minutes to configure everything.
Once everything's recorded, you can export to imovie. I didn't try that, but I know it absolutely can be done, and it shouldn't be hard. That will give you 9 tracks at a minimum, plus your video's sound as a 10th. Pretty cool stuff.
FYI, it's not enough to have your mic selected in sound preferences. You'll want to go to Utilities and audio/midi setup and choose your mic AND choose it again in the Properties For tab. Once that's done, go to Preferences in Garage Band, click on audio/midi and choose your mic. Now, you're good to go. (I found this out under an "imic" microphone question in garage band help.) Awesome app.

How do I add more than 16 Audio Tracks when my computer says there are no more audio tracks available?

Did you then re-launch the audio driver by deselecting it and then re-selecting it? It does not take effect until you do.

More than 8 Audio Tracks?

I can't seem to have more than 8 Audio Tracks. - I can create new ones, but they are 'greyed out' - I can't select or use them. How do I use more? Thanks.

Create more audio objects in the environment, or
use the setup assistant to create a default song with more audio tracks than you'll ever be likely to use, or
just say **** it and switch to Logic 8 or 9, which is actually designed to be used by people with more brains than time (sorry, old-timers, but if you didn't start out on Logic during simpler times and grow with its idiosyncrasies, Logic 7 really was a horrific mess, as this thread shows).
I hated every version of Logic prior to 8.

[Help !]Exporting more than 2 audio tracks impossible ?

Hi all,
I am trying to export a sequence with 6 audio tracks using *Menu->File->Export->Using Quicktime conversion...* and it seems to be impossible to export to more than 2 audio tracks !
If I use the option Export->Quicktime movie I can export my 6 audio tracks but I don't want to export to .mov file...
Can anyone confirm or has a solution ?

Nope, Red is correct on this Tom, unless I'm misunderstanding your question. Regardless of your audio hardware, to export more than 2 channels of audio you must define those extra channels by creating additional "audio outputs" for your sequence ... basically the number of audio channels in your export is equal to the number of audio outputs in your sequence settings; additionally you must map the audio tracks in your sequence to those audio outputs ... you do that by right clicking on or around the audio track lock icon / auto select icon for each channel and using the context menu to assign the track to a given output (you can also do this in the Audio Mixer toolbench window). This is the workflow regardless of whether you are exporting to a file or exporting to tape or otherwise.
For what its worth tho, in my own quick hardly conclusive tests earlier on, exporting a correctly configured multichannel sequence "Using Quicktime Conversion" always resulted in a stereo downmix being passed to the chosen export component, so I still think you're likely to end up needing to use the private export component API to get around this.
Hope I'm wrong tho, as it would surely make life a lot easier for you

Creating more than 16 Audio Tracks

I am working on a project that needs more than 16 Audio Tracks. Then I click on the track, then go to Audio Tracks, there is only 16 available, and they are all being used. I went into Preferences --> Audio --> Drivers, and boosted the Max. Number of Audio Tracks up, but there is still only 16, and my 16, I mean 16 different Channels. I know there has to be a way to do this. I have gotten more the 16 using Garage Band. Thanks in advance.

You need to learn to use the Environment.
In the Environment there is an audio objects page, and there it is where you have to manually create the new 17+ audio tracks you need.
Now, go crack open the manual, and go to the Environment chapter... it will enlighten you.

Cannot seem to add more then 4 audio tracks

Hi everyone, I'm a new logic user and I just can't seem to add more then four audio tracks. If I keep going "track>create with next instrument" I seem to only add buses. I've been searching for answers in Orren Merton's "Logic Pro 7 Power" but I still can't seem to find an answer. Hope someone can help me, thanks in advance.

Highlight one of the audio tracks, then in that same menu in the arrange window, select "Create Multiple..." then it will ask you how many you need....
If that doesn't do it, come back here for further instruction.

How do you create default Read/Write Permissions for more than 1 user?

My wife and I share an iMac, but use separate User accounts for separate mail accounts, etc.
However, we have a business where we both need to have access to the same files and both have Read/Write permissions on when one of us creates a new file/folder.
By default new files and folders grant Read/Write to the creator of the new file/folder, and read-only to the Group "Staff" in our own accounts or "Wheel" in the /Users/Public/ folder, and read-only to Everyone.
We are both administrators on the machine, and I know we can manually override the settings for a particular file/folder by changing the permissions, but I would like to set things up so that the Read/Write persmissions are assigned for both of us in the folder for that holds our business files.
It is only the 2 of us on the machine, we trust each other and need to have complete access to these many files that we share. I have archiveing programs running so I can get back old versions if we need that, so I'm not worried about us overwriting the file with bad info. I'm more concerned with us having duplicates that are not up to date in our respective user accounts.
Here is what I have tried so far:
1. I tried to just set the persmissions of the containing folder with us both having read/write persmissions, and applied that to all containing elements.
RESULT -> This did nothing for newly created files or folders, they still had the default permissions of Read/Write for the creating User, Read for the default Group, Read for Everyone
2. I tried using Sandbox ( http://www.mikey-san.net/sandbox/ ) to set the inheritance of the folder using the methods laid out at http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=93742
RESULT -> Still this did nothing for newly created files or folders, they still had the default permissions of Read/Write for the creating User, Read for the default Group, Read for Everyone
3. I have set the umask to 002 ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2202 ) so that new files and folders have a default permission that gives the default group Read/Write permissions. This unfortunately changes the default for the entire computer, not just a give folder.
I then had to add wife's user account to the "Staff" group because for some reason her account was not included in that. I think this is due to the fact that her account was ported into the computer when we upgraded, where as mine was created new. I read something about that somewhere, but don't recall where now. I discovered what groups we were each in by using the Terminal and typing in "groups username" where username was the user I was checking on.
I added my wife to the "Staff" group, and both of us to the "Wheel" group using the procedures I found at

RESULT -> I could create a new file using TextEdit and save it anywhere in my account and it would have the permissions: My Username - Read/Write, "Staff" or "Wheel" (depending on where I saved it) - Read/Write, Everyone - Read Only, as expected from the default umask.
I could then switch over to my wife's account, open the file, edited it, and save it, but then the permissions changed to: Her Username - Read/Write, (unknown) - Read/Write, Everyone - Read Only.
And when I switch back to my account, now I can open the file, but I can't save it with my edits.
I'm at my wits end with this, and I can believe it is impossible to create a common folder that we can both put files in to have Read/Write permissions on like a True Shared Folder. Anyone who has used windows knows what you can do with the Shared folder in that operating system, ie. Anyone with access can do anything with those files.
So if anyone can provide me some insight on how to accomplish what I really want to do here and help me get my system back to remove the things it seems like I have screwed up, I greatly appreciate it.
I tried to give as detailed a description of the problem and what I have done as possible, without being to long winded, but if you need to know anything else to help me, please ask, I certainly won't be offended!

I was unaware that I could create a volume on the HD non-destructively using disk utility. This may then turn out to be the better solution after all, but I will have to free up space on this HD and try that.
Also, I was obviously unaware of the special treatment of file creation by TextEdit. I have been using this to test my various settings, and so the inheritance of ACLs has probably been working properly, I just have been testing it incorrectly. URGH!
I created a file from Word in my wife's account, and it properly inherited the permissions of the company folder: barara - Custom, steve - Custom, barara - Read/Write, admin - Read Only, Everyone - Read Only
I tried doing the chmod commands on $TMPDIR for both of us from each of our accounts, but I still have the same behavior for TextEdit files though.
I changed the group on your shared folder to admin from wheel as you instructed with chgrp. I had already changed the umask to 002, and I just changed it back to 022 because it didn't seem to help. But now I know my testing was faulty. I will leave it this way though because I don't think it will be necessary to have it set to 002.
I do apparently still have a problem though, probably as a result of all the things I have tried to get this work while I was testing incorrectly with TextEdit.
I have just discovered that the "unknown user" only appears when I create the a file from my wife's account. It happens with any file or folder I create in her account, and it exists for very old files and folders that were migrated from the old computer. i.e. new and old files and foders have permissions: barara - Read/Write, unknown user - Read Only, Everyone - Read Only
Apparently the unknown user gets the default permissions of a group, as the umask is currently set to 022 and unknown user now gets Read Only permissions on new items, but when I had umask set to 002, the unknown user got Read/Write permissions on new items.
I realize this is now taking this thread in a different direction, but perhaps you know what might be the cause of this and how to correct or at least know where to point me to get the answer.
Also, do you happen to know how to remove users from groups? I added myself and my wife to the Wheel group because that kept showing up as the default group for folders in /Users/Shared
Thanks for your help on this, I just don't know how else one can learn these little "gotchas" without assistance from people like you!

Read write problems

I have a new macbook pro with 4GB ram and a 3.06Ghz core duo processor.
I use Logic Pro Studio with 2 Motu 896mk3's
after recording about 13 tracks I am now getting "disk too slow errors" After using activity monitor it doesn't seem to be a cpu or ram issue but disk speed maybe.
After reading forums it seems like my macbook isnt suited for recording this many tracks.... would a really fast firewire harddrive be better?? if so any recommendations?

The general rule of thumb is that the startup disk is least suited for working with streaming audio (or video, for that matter). The system (OS X) is also interacting with the startup disk while you're working in Logic, which of course has an adverse effect on playing back/recording of audio files.
Second argument against using the SU disk for streaming/recording is that the system can sometimes 'take over' the disk for certain background tasks you have no direct control over, and this can in some (rare, but always inconvenient) cases even disrupt or fail a recording session. An external disk is "free" from this system traffic and can dedicate its full speed purely to recording/playing back the audio files that are on it.
Having said that, if you have a 5400rpm disk, you could improve your track count by ± 30% by replacing it by a 7200rpm disk. Your Mac will become snappier too in certain area's.
My advice: get a FireWire external disk, and store your Logic projects there. Secondly, if your budget allows it, replace the 5400rpm internal HD with a 7200rpm HD.

Read/write problem with Datasockets.

Hi, I'm a newcomer to Labview, and I'm having a problem with Datasockets. When trying to create a 'Publish & Subscribe' socket between two machines it only works on one, the one whose dstp address is the local machine, the other being incapable of writing to this 'host' and displaying red LEDs, although it is reading from the host. Also I've only managed to set up these read/write connections using the right-click options, how is it done programatically? Any clarification on the issue (whether directly connected or not :-) would be appreciated. Many thanks,

This is normal behavior for DataSocket. You want to run a DataSocket server on both machines. Although you can SUBSCRIBE to a DS server anywhere on the network, you can only publish to your local server. We do a LOT of Datasocket work here, and this has never been a problem. It's a real security bonus, as well.
It's a good idea to split all your read and write functions. Although some front panel objects (knobs, particularly) can be controls and indicators simultaneaously, it's good practice, for a number of reasons, to NOT use both functions. I build "dummy" front panels for all my VI's which I distribute to all my colleagues who need to work with a remote instrument.
You cannot really appreciate DataSocket, till you've tried to rem
otely control something with PC Anywhere over a slow network! A bit of practice, and you'll wonder how you ever did anything without DataSocket. I'd be glad to work with you on any particulars. Good Luck!

Javacomm read/write problem

Hello all, i have successfully installed javacomm package in my computer and i can enumerate all available ports. My problem is between the read - write communication. By running the SimpleRead first and then the SimpleWrite i got a "Port Already in use" which sounds normal to me, so i connected 2 pc's with a serial cable and runned one of sun's samples on each.
Step 1. SimpleRead waits for data on COM1
Step 2. SimpleWrite(on other pc) sends some data from COM1
Both COM1's are connected with that serial cable but seems no data coming. Am i doing something wrong? I tried same thing with VirtualPC but still no data arriving.

Without any ambiguity whatsoever,
"Port Already in use" means
something else has already opened the com port and I can say the
COMM API. works because I use it all the time with GPRS board.

Crossing pins 2 & 3 will only redirect your output/input

Read write problem

I had a code that was working perfectly until recently. Some part of the VI where it reads and write does not work. Does anyone have the patiece to actually go throught the code and help me. I am a beginer with LV.
When we make an exe using LV 7.1, all the source files are pretty much on the exe, correct? So, if I go and copy that exe elsewwhere, the source files should open correctly, right? I ask this because it seems that the files from vi.lib may have got displaced and hence it does not read/write.
Help required urgently.

You didn't post your code for anyone to look at but I'm goint to guess that you did not take into account that paths are a bit different in the development environment and in the run-time. If you use a function like Get Current VI's Path, in development mode, it will return something like c:\folder\example.vi. After the app is built, it will return c:\folder\app.exe\example.vi. So, to get the path to the folder, you need to do an extra strip path. This is an extremely common mistake and there is a knowledge base article (that I don't have the link to offhand) and there have been numerous posts with the exact same question. There are a lot of ways to handle this. The one I usually use is to put in an application.kind property node and wire the output to a case structure. Put the extra Strip Path in the Run Time System case.
