HD requires repair, but OSX disk will not mount

When I run Verify Disk on Disk Utility my PowerMac 2.7 Dual (bluetooth keyboard, mouse) gives a message reporting "Failure on Exit" and as follows:

My OSX installation disk is in good condition, and I have tried restarting with it in the cd/dvd drive, using the Opt key, but it pops out and the screen shows what I think is a reload sign, a right pointing arrow, and the HD.
Clicking or double clicking any of these produces no result.
If I now reinsert the OSX disk it and the Hardware Check symbols are sen too, but nothing is active.
If I start in a normal way, I get the chime, and the machine is ok, with the usual faults: the optical bluetooth mouse freezes frequently (it is old), the cd/dvd cradle pops out on startup (usualy), and the owner is worried sick.
I used to run EyeTv 1.8.6 using a Terratec(2) gizmo, but stopped a week ago, just too many problems.
I have spent most of today trying to find a solution.
A while back Apple (no warranty left) kindly wiped the HD and reinstalled a totally up to date Op Sys and iLife. But I still ended up having to reinstall OSX again from my disk and archice the "old" system and I am getting so I have had enough.
I have copied my pics and docs to disks (not using "Backup" again - I have oodles of disks I cannot access the info on, which I assume is encrypted by Apple's "Backup" prog, which I am not paying for AGAIN when they owe me 3 years worth of .Mac anyway (Pls do not ask.)
Please help.

Hi-
Welcome to Discussions!
To boot from your install disc, you can do 2 things:
1- Startup the computer while holding the "C" key. This will make the computer startup from the install disc.
2- Using the Startup Manager (startup holding the "Option" key), will bring you to the available startup volumes. Click once on the OS X install disc icon, and then click the "straight" arrow. The computer should then boot to the install disc.
The error that you are receiving may not be repairable with Disk Utility.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302411
I would try running Disk Utility at least 3 times. If all 3 times fail, then you will need Disk Warrior to repair the drive:
http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/
Disk Warrior is very good at fixing bad directories, and should give good results if Disk Utility fails.

Just recently my applications have taken a turn to not wanting to launch. These include anything from Dashboard to the Microsoft Office Suite. System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.Framework/versions/A/Frameworks/Co reGraphics.Framework/versions/A/CoreGraphics
I figured that with it being a system library issue and the Repair Disk Permissions has been completely useless, that a complete restore would be in order. And I was wrong. For some reason my Genuine 13-inch MacBook Pro Mac OS X Install DVD will not mount. Meaning I out the DVD in said drive and it will attempt to mount but will eventually give up and eject itself. I can load any other cd/DVD into my drive and it will mount without a problem.

  • External disks will not mount on new OS install

    Hi,
I just had to reformat and reinstall all the OS and applications on a imac g5 for a friend of mine. I have updated all the os to 10.5.8 and have installed user software iWork, iLife, Microsoft office and Roxio's Toast 10 and a family history software called Reunion. That is all that has been done to this new install.
I went to transfer her personal files back and I can't get any external disks to mount. They will all show in disk utility but will not mount the desktop. I have tried 2 different drives formatted in Mac OS Exteded Journalled as well as MS-Dos Fat32. I have also tried flash drives formatted in each of these formats. All of these drives are readable on several other computers I have here, including a 2008 Macbook Pro running Lion, 2010 iMac running Snow Leopard as so on.
When inserted in the iMac G5 I can see all the drives in disk utiltiy and was able to even erase and reformat a drive to differnt format ( mac extended to Fat32) without issues to mount on the other computers.
    Cd's mount just fine.
Anyone have any clues as to what's going on? Any thoughts are most welcome.
    Thanks

What exactly shows in System Profiler>Hardware>USB for those drives?
Boot from the Install Disc & see if they show up, not grayed out in Disk Utility.
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
We were thinking along the same lines. While at home I dug up a firewire enclosure and put a bootable GUID formatted drive in it (that I had in one of the usb enclosures) and started her computer holding down the option key and then chose to boot from the external firewire. All usb drives are now mounting upon connection. I asume that her drive has bad sectors on it (even though the SMART status says it's OK) and is not loading all the drivers properly for USB to mount. I was suspicious from the beginning that the OS was corrupt when she first had me look at it. It was at that point that I booted it in target mode, connected to my Macbook Pro, and then CCC'd to a usb drive that I had. I then had a couple of difficulties installing the new OS. Should have known......
I am now going to put a new drive in it for her and she'll be up and running.
Thanks so much for your help and thoughts that got me thinking as well.

  • IMac Disks will not mount under OS 9...

    ...only through Tiger.
I have an iMac G3 500mhz. It has a partitioned drive, and is running OS 9.x and Tiger. If I insert a CD, it won't mount on the desktop in OS 9. Also, firewire & USB drives won't mount in OS 9.
When I'm in Tiger, these items mount without issue.
What is the problem? Anyone else experience this?
    Thanks,
    Chris H.

Not sure about the CD, because a CD can have various formats. Some are not readable under Mac OS 9. What CDs have this problem, or is it all CDs? If it's all CDs, the CD driver (in Extensions folder) may be disabled. You can check using Extensions Manager.
For the hard drives, they should be formatted as HFS+ (also called Mac OS Extended). Not only that, but if they were formatted using a Mac OS X, that checkbox in Disk Utility for +Install Mac OS 9 Disk Drivers+ needs to be checked. If should be by default, but if it was unchecked during formatting or partitioning, then Mac OS 9 will not be able to access those drives. And again, there may be some USB and FireWire extensions disabled, which would prevent any USB or FireWire drive from mounting.
The disabling of those drivers is likely if the Mac OS 9 System Folder was being used for Classic under Mac OS X. Mac OS X handles such driver functions, so an experienced Mac user would have disabled certain unnecessary extensions in the Mac OS 9 System Folder. But if that same System Folder is used to boot the Mac directly, those driver functions would be missing.

  • 500 GB Hard Disk will not mount on iMacs (after working fine for months)

setup : 2x iMac 24" 10.5.6..wired to airport Xtreme, Iomega 500 GB HD connected via USB
this drive worked fine and has all the pics on it and was used to backup both iMac's via Time Machine.
Today the Airport Xtreme (AX) gives us a flashing orange light and informs us that the 500 GB Iomega disk needs to be connected to the mac and needs to be repaired.
so...we did, with a "disk appears to be OK " message after 'repair'
mounting from within Disk Utility gives us : "The disk “500HD” could not be mounted.
Try running First Aid on the disk and then retry mounting."
    (we did just that...!)
We also tried "Drive Genius" with the same results.
whether we hook the drive to the AX or directly to the iMac...no mounting.
The drive (and it's partition) does appear perfectly in both 'Disk Utility' and in 'Drive Genius'
(The iMac does mount other USB items like mem-sticks, camera's just fine.)

While it doesn't sound like this is really the problem since OTHER devices work on the USB ports, never the less, it is an easy thing to try out anyway.
First thing to do is reset the USB chip set on the mother board. Unfortunately, when you power down the computer there is always a bit of power still applied to the motherboard to keep things alive and this usually includes powering the ports to do stuff like detect when a device is plugged in or wants to wake up the computer. The downside of this is when a bus/port chipset goes into a weird state, locks up, etc., simply power cycling (shutdown & restart) the computer won't work.
So first thing to try is resetting the chipset and to do this you have to power down the computer and completely unplug the computer from the wall power (unplug the power cord to your Mac). Also unplug everything from the Mac's ports (USB, FW, Ethernet, etc.) to make sure no parasitic power is still there to keep the chipset alive. Now let it sit for a minute (give those big power caps in there time to discharge). Now reattach the keyboard & mouse only, plug the power cord back in, & start up the Mac. Now see if your USB ports work any better.
    Best of luck!
    Patrick

  • New Hard drive in NTFS--will not mount on Mac

I have a 3rd Gen ipod with a dead 30g hard drive. I bought a 40g Toshiba that came formatted in NTFS. I installed the new hard drive and tried to run updater, but the ipod will not mount on a Mac Powerbook G4.
The ipod shows that it is charging and says "Disk Mode," has a check mark on the screen and says "OK to disconnect"
I have always used a Mac and I do NOT have access to a PC to reformat it there (at least not that I know of).
How do I force the Mac to see my ipod with the new drive? Oh wise and powerful Mac wizards, help me!
PS If this is a really simple thing to fix, please be gentle. I still use my IIsi and enjoy playing Civilization 1. The G4 belongs to a roommate.

    To recap:
I have a 3rd Gen ipod with a dead 30g hard drive. I bought a 40g Toshiba that came formatted in NTFS. I installed the new hard drive and tried to run updater, but the ipod would not mount on a Mac Powerbook G4. I am connecting through firewire.
The iPod showed that it was charging and said "Disk Mode," had a check mark on the screen and said "OK to disconnect"
It was stuck here for hours and then it finally managed to mount. (it might have been after a reset, I don't remember).
I ran iPod updater and RESTOREd the hard drive. It asked for a new name, language, etc. iTunes opened and I recopied some of my music back onto the iPod. I ejected the iPod safely and copied some more music from an external drive onto my main machine.
When I tried to reconnect the iPod, it went back in to disk mode, check mark, ok to disconnect, etc and there it has been for 26 hours.
I cannot even get iPod updater to find it.

  • Xsan 4 will not mount volume on client

I recently upgraded my MDC and my client computer to Yosemite. I went through the migration process the best I could and created a Configuration Profile on my MDC for my client computer. I installed the profile successfully but the volume will not mount on the client computer. On the client computer within Profiles, the Xsan Configuration Profile has in red "Unsigned" underneath it, is that what is causing the problem?
Also a few notes: there are two other client computers that haven't been upgraded and are running Maverick and the volume does mount to those computers. The volume is also mounted on the MDC and if I go to Disk Utilities on the client computer I do see the volume, just not mounted.
Any help would be great! Thank you.

    Thank you Claudio,
After doing much research and testing I believe you are onto something with my fsmpm or my .auth_secret file not being created. After using Server.app on the MDC I used the configure profile within Server.app. After installing the profile on my client computer it didn't mount and when looking within the Library/Preferences/Xsan folder there was no files (including the hidden .auth_secret file). So I then I used the web profile interface to create the configuration profile and this time it installed the fsnameservers and config.plist files but not the hidden auth_secret file and still no mount.
To answer some of you questions, I did try several times the "sudo xsanctl mount Volume Name" but had no success. I was previously running 10.9 on the MDC and my client computer. I am not sure if the MDC already had an Open Directory Master before upgrading and I did have a little bit of problems activating Xsan, because some of my DNS settings had changed. I got that all squared away and Xsan started working.
The reason I believe it is a fsmpm issue is because when I executed the command "sudo xsanctl i" (views the volumes connected to Xsan) I go a message reading "fsmpm not running error3". So after reading this forum Xsan: "fsmpm not running" message in Xsan Admin - Apple Support I copied the .auth_secret from the MDC to my client and still no mount. I tried again with all the files within Library/Preferences/Xsan folder and nothing. I then got the .auth_secret file from another client computer running 10.9 and still no mount, BUT when I copied all the files within the 10.9 client's Library/Preferences/Xsan the volume appeared! YEAH! But I'm not sure if this is a fix I should be happy with or continue to figure out why its not working the proper way? That way in the future I'm not running into this issue over and over again.
So I need to figure out either how to get my fsmpn running in 10.10 or figure out why my my Server.app on the MDC won't create the auth_sect file. I read somewhere that within the Xsan screen in the Sever app it should show the Authentication Secret, but I do not see this on my Xsan screen. Should it be there and if so is this where my problem steams from? Any thoughts? Thank you so much!

  • Time Capsule will not mount new external HD

I have just bought a new iOmega 1TB external HD to connect to my Time Capsule. I have perviously been using a Western Digital 250gb external HD. I am having real problems getting the time capsule to mount the new hard drive, i have reformatted it to Apple Extended, but it still will not mount. However when i connect the old drive it mounts ok. Any ideas??

I am having exactly the same issue with a new Iomega 1TB hard disk.
The disk works fine when directly connected to a Mac. The Mac can read the TimeCapsule internal disk. The Mac can see the old, smaller WD external disk when it's connect to the TimeCapsule. But it can't see the new external disk via TimeCapsule.
I have reformatted the disk to MacExt journaled, I have rebooted each device in the chain. Just for kicks, I repartitioned the disk into smaller pieces, and tried reformatting as FAT. No joy.
    Any other ideas?

  • Client will not mount SAN after upgrade to 10.4.8 Server

Living life on the bleeding edge, I loaded the 10.4.8 Server upgrade onto my G4 Xserve which is the MDC for my single Xraid SAN. The SAN started without a hitch, however, the volume would not mount on the client side. The MDC shows up in the client list and the mount buttons are active, but the SAN will not mount. The system log yields the following error:
Can not mount filesystem, cvfs error 'Invalid argument' (0xb) while initializing local portmapper
I checked the obvioius: /volume is clear of old links, running cvfsck showed no problems, and cvadmin stat looks ok and who shows the MDC as FSM and ADM.
Has anybody else run into this? Any observations would be welcomed!
    Thanks,
    babcom

As indicated on the tag line, Xsan 1.4. Upgrade from OS 10.4.7. SAN created using version 1.4. SAN mounted just fine under 10.4.7. In an attempt to isolate the problem, I tried mounting the SAN from the command line:
    mount -t acfs iplVol1.cfg /Volumes
only to received the same invalid argument error. I suspect that a parameter name has been changed/deleted/munged when parsing the volume's cfg file. Since Apple did NOT reference the invalid string token in the error message, I can not be sure. I am just now getting back to work the issue.

My external hard drive has power and is spinning, but will not mount.  It was fine yesterday.  It shows up in Disk Utility and is verified and repaired.  Tried the drive on 2 other macs with same result.  Tried a new enclosure and that did not work.  Tried all ports...usb and firewire.  Any way to save my data?

I have real a lot of posts that say to click Command+Option while opening iPhoto and this will open the Photo Library Repair window, but... this is not happening.
Be sure you're holding the correct keys and that you're holding them long enough. Depress them before clicking on iPhoto and don't let go until the menu shows up.

  • Hard drive will not mount shows up in Disk Utility

I have an external drive with a bootable OS X 10.6.8. I was in a transition between building up a SSD swapped drive. The SSD is installed in the CPU box but I have my old installation running from an external.
I have several external hard drives. They are all Firewire. Some have USB 3.0 and or eSATA options but my MacMini only talks to Firewire and USB 2.0.
I understand that you daisy chain Firewire drives and turn them on and off in sequence as they fall from the CPU box/case.
Firewire is a power source. I run the external with the OS using an AC adapter but one Firewire drive is powered through Firewire.
I have had as many as 4 external drives running along with the internal drive without a glitch while I was reorganizing files.
Today I booted off the external drive. It was running fine. I turned on one Firewire drive (the one that runs on Firewire power). That drive stumbled. I recognized the sound when there is an interruption in power. This cause the external boot drive to stall. I had to force a reboot.
Now the external boot drive will not boot up. It does not mount but Disk Utility sees it. The drive itself is bright and clear in Disk Utility but the partition (single) is faded out. I can run Verify and repair in DU. DU says it doesn't see anything to repair. It will not mount on its own or when I click the Mount button in DU. It does not produce an icon on the Desktop (because it is not mounting).
I also have SpeedTools. But although it sees the drive I cannot do anything with it. None of its tools run more than a spli second before they fail.
This drive has USB 3.0 and I see everything through USB that I see through Firewire. Connecting the other way did not get around the problem.
Of course I will buy an AC adapter for every external drive and never run them using Firewire again but the horse is out of the barn.
I have the original installation disks and could run the Archive and Install option but it would require physically swapping drives with the internal. I'd like to avoid it if possible. It is a MacMini and tedious.
    Any suggestions?

I took the problematic hard drive and installed it in my Mac Mini so I could attempt a Safe Boot and then Archive and Install if necessary.
Safe Mode didn't work. The drive produced the circle with a slash symbol.
I reset the PRAM which was part of a list of steps to work through I found created by Apple Support.
I was able to boot up to Verbose Mode and view the text of the boot process. I wrote it all down. I can answer questions about the content better than typing it all out exactly. It includes, "...journal magic is bad..." "...failed to open..." and ends with "...cannot mount root, errno = 19"
I attempted Archive and Install however when it went to show what target drives were available it was a blank box and all buttons were grayed out.
I rebooted and opened Disk Utility from the DVD. The drive appeared the same with the top main line bright and the partitioned volume faded. Still was unable to mount. I ran Verify and this time a red line of text appeared "Invalid content in Journal" and at the end I ran Repair. When running I could read line by line and at one point it showed "checking volume information" then the following line "Repairing volume" the following line "Rechecking volume" more line of checking then it ended with "The volume was repaired successfully."
It still would not mount. I ran Verify again and again said "Invalid content in Journal" and this time it stopped midway saying "The volume was found corrupt and needs to be repaired. Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk."
I clicked Repair and it ended with The vol. was repaired successfully."
Still unable to mount I began repeating Repair over and over. Each time it found something to repair and ended with a success message. After several more Repairs I tried Verify and it stopped midway saying to Repair the disk.
Question: Does running Repair multiple times continue to correct bits and pieces little by little or is this a generic message and we should treat it as a problem Disk Utility cannot pinpoint and is just beating its head against the wall?
The step by step instructions I downloaded mentioned running Repair more than once but it did not say that running it 20 times would erode some problems and eventually lead to a fully repaired disk (if the problem was something DU could take care of in the first place). At this point I have run Repair about 20 times total with a series of 10 back to back skipping Verify. I keep seeing the lines about invalid content in a journal and that it repaired something successfully. Yet I still cannot mount the disk.
