HD & SD mixed format - ultimate output will be SD DVD.... help?

I am working on a small doc for a client who will only ever want an SD DVD as final deliverable format. This will never be broadcast. For reasons I won't bore you with, the DP we hired shot DVCPro HD 720p60. I also have some home movies to cut in and those are of course SD and 4:3.
I tried using Compressor to downconvert the HD to 10-bit uncompressed NTSC, but in final cut it didn't look so great.
I tried upconverting the SD footage to DVCPro HD 720p60. Since it is old home movies anyway, the quality isn't as crucial and I thought this was a more visually acceptable option than the downconverting had been. HOWEVER, it is now squished and the only way I can figure out how to unsquish it is to blow it up even further... pushing the limits of what is acceptable. (Also I would prefer to crop out part of the frame rather than pillarboxing.)
And finally, I'm going to end up with an SD master so how do I deal with all of this best?

Generally speaking, doing all your post in the highest resolution
and exporting down to the deliverable resolution is the way to go.
However, you have made it abundantly clear that this project will
be SD output, that some of your footage is SD home movies, and
that it will never be broadcast, so what the heck. Edit it in SD.
Set up your FCP sequence for good old DV NTSC. Bring in the
beautiful DVCPROHD footage, and let FCP convert it to SD,
which will require rendering those portions of the timeline.
Since the HD stuff has a different aspect ratio, you'll have to
decide how to crop it, using the motion tab.
Doing it this way will give you the option of changing the crop
if that suits the purposes of the edit. You could add zooms or
pans that will take advantage of the higher resolution
before it's downrezed.

  • HDV mixed format editing and mastering for broadcast TV

    Hi
    I have HDV blues with regards mixed format and multi time base.
    Any help advice will be greatly appreciated.
    I have never handled HDV in multiformat and multiple timebase to Mater and output for Broadcast television.
    I am hoping to master to DVD directly on the configuration ( details provided below ) to deliver to NTSC and PAL market for DVD retail.
    However I would need to take to a post house, one or more quicktime file to Output to Digital Betacam for television broadcast for both NTSC and PAL formats.
    with regards
    problems I am facing are on two fronts:
    1) I am unsure of best quality and workflow to output master on Digital Betacam tape for broadcast TV in NTSC and PAL both formats.
    2) With sequence set at HDV 1080 50i, and export setting as current setting, upon render and export of self contained quicktime direct from FCP timeline I face few troubling symptoms;
    - that the quicktime exports 3mins to 35 minutes of qt clip but not the whole program of 90 minutes as one clip. System crashes and I have to reboot.
    - Another symptom is that by doing above my time line shows aduio as out of sync to video. here i see that Audio tracks A1,A2 as being torn apart at cut edit points and have gap of 1 frame at random ( but not on all edit points ).
    A3, A4 and other music and sound fx tracks have slipped off sync by few frames , again at random and also other places the edit comes back in sync with audio.
    - Of course I am having to re- render this sequence timeline a zillion times even though the previously rendered files still exist in relevant folder.
    Program duration: 90 minutes
    current sequence : 1440 x 1080 at 50i
    edit sequence time-line consists following source material directly ingested from tape via firewire in native HDV and DV:
    VIDEO
    -HDV footage of 1440 x 1080, 50i
    -HDV footage of 1440 x 1080, 60i
    -PAL footage standard and widescreen
    -NTSC footage standard and widescreen

    Hi guys, thanks for getting back to me. My client has now changed her mind and so I'm just mixing XDCAM and HDV 16:9 footage which is absolutely fine. Awesome. Thanks for your help!
    I have one issue - some of the XDCAM footage she has given me is .MP4 video (actually each clip is a folder with 5 files in it (.MP4, .SMI, .PPN, .XML, .BIM). Do I have to convert the .MP4 into .MOV via Compressor to work with it (presumably this will compress it somewhat) or can I convert it simply and losslessly somehow (perhaps using sony XDCAM software?)
    Thanks again for any help!

  • DVD Studio Pro crashes when accessing folders with mixed formats

    DVD Studio Pro 4 on Mac Book Pro OSX 10.6.8
    Program crashes whenever accessing my movies directory. It contains mostly HD content in MOV format. There are some MP4 and M4V in there too.
    To check this I copied an MOV, MP4, and M4V into a separate directory. I added this folder to the Video tab of the Palette in DVDSP and same crash occurs until I remove all but MOV content.
    Project setting is 1920 x 1080 HD. I have successfully imported several assets in MOV format.
    My question is why would DVD Studio Pro crash just because it is pointed to a directory with mixed formats? Would it not just ignore to incorrect formats and move on? Why the crash if I am not trying to import them?

    I was going to let this go doc, but....
    I discovered the crash by accident while doing Ripple Current training - yes I am a complete DVD SP newbie! Anyway my story: Oh look! There is an icon pointing at my Movies directory in the Video tab. Gee thats cool lets see what is in it. Ooooh s&*t the program just crashed! That can't be right, lets just try it again. Now thats just wrong! I'll beat this thing so lets experiment. Lo and behold its a mixed format problem. Why doesn't DVD SP just ignore any unrecognized formats like any other program? Hmm, being the newbie I am, and there was no hint in the Ripple training, I would ask the docs on the Apple forum. They will know why and what to do!
    DVD SP seemingly by default maps my Movies directory. My Movies directory has multiple formats in it from years of use. I have movies for my iPhone, iPad, movies for Vimeo and iTunes, as well as other distribution formats in the same directory. I also have been experimenting with different codecs. My Movies directory has been used as an Internet distribution point. So please excuse me if I did not clean out my Movies directory before launching DVD SP! Little did I know this would even happen. If I could "unmap" this selection permanently I would - do you know how to do this? So far I cannot find any preference for it.
    In a round-about way you got there, however so did I on my own - isolate the project to its own directory and NEVER pick on the "Movies" icon. I am not satisfied since it would be really nice to block this from ever happening again. God forbid an incorrect format should ever sneak into the sacred project directory "sorry but DVD SP and incorrect formats don't play nicely", so stop doing that!

  • Mixed formats-editing-transcoding and mastering

    Hello,
    My client has a project with that has mixed format and we need to figure out what workflow will be best to edit and master.
    The final video will be 1-2 hours.
    It will be shown primarily on the web and, at a later stage, in dvd.
    There are 2 main sources:
    a) screen captured video with animation codec at 1024X768, square pixel (most footage)
    b) video footage shot at apparently 24p "advanced" and already digitized at 24 via Cinema Tools and converted to 29.98- non square pixel (some footage)
    The client wants the final output to be either 960x720p or 800x600 h.264
    Audio was recorded separately for both a) and b) so everything needs to be synced.
    Project is in a FCP Studio 2 system with a G5.
    Questions:
    What should the sequence settings be? There isn't a 960x720 setting.
    Should we uprez the DV 24p and to what?
    Does the b) footage need to be converted from animation to AIC (lower data rate)? Would this be effective or introduce unwanted artifacts?
    What to do with the square and non square pixel footage? Take them to AE?
    Thank you for your feedback,
    Mabel

    well it's a 16:9 format.  Is your 640x480 material 4:3 or 16:9 widescreen, which means it's anamorphic with the display of the 640x480 image stretched horizontally?  If this material 4:3, you have to decide whether you want your sequence to be 16:9, in which case you either have black bars on the left and right of your 4:3 material or you could scale up your 4:3 material to fill the frame and lose the top and bottom part of the frame OR you can make your sequence 4:3 and "letterbox" the 16:9 material (black bars at top and bottom) or scale up the 16:9 material to fill the frame and lose the material on the left and right.  Remember scaling up will cause you to lose quality.  If you decide on a 4:3 standard def sequence, you should be able crop your 16:9 "HD" material to fill the frame and this sounds to me like the best solution.
    I would use compressor to convert all your footage to a single fcp friendly format before editing.
    Before you go any further,  what is your end use?  This should help decide the best way to proceed.

  • Is "Broadcast Safe" necessary if the output will never be broadcast?

    I'm doing a project whose final output will be a set of DVD's which will never be broadcast. I really like the color look I've achieved for my clips, but when I check my scopes, they're outside broadcast safe, both up and down. If the output will never be broadcast, do I need to adjust these for broadcast safe?
    Also, to get the best for the output, which settings for YUV, etc. should I use to have the DVD's match what I'm seeing in FCP?
    Just a bit of additional information, I'm making the assumption that most if not all of the ultimate viewers of the project will be viewing it on modern HD sets. Does that also make a difference to my final output settings?
    Thanks.

    You must view FCP's output on a calibrated, professional broadcast monitor to assess the "look".
    Computer monitors do not provide a true indication of how your movie will appear on a consumer television.
    Try to find two consumer televisions that are accurately and identically adjusted. It is very unlikely.
    While there is some degree of tolerance and there's not much chance of you blowing up someone's TV these days, you should at least use the "Normal" settings in the broadcast safe filter.
    As an example. whites and yellows that are too bright can "crossover" and cause an annoying buzzing sound in the audio as well as being unpleasant to look at.

  • Formatting printer output for dotmatrix printer

    Hi Experts,
    i'm trying to format the output of the EPSON LQ-870 dot matrix printer to print the output in the paper size height 280 mm & width 210 mm.The device type i used for my output device is EPESCP2.For the first page the header and line items are coming correctly.But for the second page onwards, there is some space is coming between each line items.In third page,the header is coming little bit down from the required location.My page size is little bit less than the normal A4 size.How to rectify this?
    Points will be rewarded if helpful.......
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
    I created a condition table '550 - Shipping point/plant'. Then I created an access sequence 'ZSH1' and assigned this condition table 550 to it.
    In the output determination procedure, the procedure 'V10000 - Header output' has the condition type PL02 - BOL: Single Delivery assigned to it.
    The assignments look like:
    Step       Counter         Cond Type
    10               1                LD00     Delivery Note
    20               2                PL00     Packing list
    30               3                PL01     Planning Slip
    40               4                PL02     BOL: Single Delivery
    In Assign output procedures, the entry corresponding to delivery type 'LF' is:
    Del Type                O/P procedure                       O/P Type
    LF Delivery                    V10000  Header Output             LD00Delivery Note
    When I try to enter a new condition record using VV21, it does not show up this key combination 'Shipping point/Plant'.
    Can someone tell me if I am missing some customization?
    Thanks,
    Rugmani

  • Formatting array output

    how do i format the output of an array so that only a certain number of the elements print per line. i know this is basic, i am a beginner and need help.

    final int itemsPerLine = 5;
    int counter = 0;
    String myArray[]; // This will contain your array
    while (counter < myArray.length) {
        System.out.print(myArray[counter]; // Print out the item
        counter++; // increment our counter;
        if (counter%itemsPerLine == 0) {
            System.out.print("\n"); // ad a line return
    }This is one example. It prints out the next string in the array (which you need to initialise and populate first), increments the counter, then checks the modulus to see if its time for a newline.

  • Formatting Binary Output

    I want to format binary output in text fields to confrom to the following scheme:
    head data1 data2 return offSet id
    6 bits 5 bits 5 bits 5 bits 5 bits 6 bits
    where the first row are field names and the second is the filed width.
    What that means is that, using the value 1 (base 10) as an example, a 6 bit filed will read 000001 and so a 5 bit field will read 00001.
    My program converts to binary no worries, but how do I enforce the width requirements? I am using Integer.toBinaryString(int) to convert, if that helps.
    Thanks

    public String intToJustifiedBinaryString(int number, int length)
      StringBuffer buffer = new StringBuffer(Integer.toBinaryString(number));
      while (buffer.length() < length)
          buffer.insert(0, "0");
      return buffer.toString();It works great! Now for the learning. I looked up StringBuffer and found this explanation:
    StringBuffer(String str)
    Constructs a string buffer so that it represents the same sequence of characters as the string argument; in other words, the initial contents of the string buffer is a copy of the argument string.
    What I am trying to figure out is how it is not overwriting what already exists in the buffer. Lets pretend with int = 7 and a 6 bit field.
    So initially, buffer.length() = 3 and my buffer looks like 1 1 1.
    From the API: The principal operations on a StringBuffer are the append and insert methods, which are overloaded so as to accept data of any type. Each effectively converts a given datum to a string and then appends or inserts the characters of that string to the string buffer. The append method always adds these characters at the end of the buffer; the insert method adds the characters at a specified point.
    If I am specifying my insert point as 0 (insert(int offset, char c) Inserts the string representation of the char argument into this string buffer.) How am I not overwriting one of my bits comprising my binary 7? My only guess is that insert operation first shifts what is already there over the necessary amount, based on the length of what is being inserted, before inserting at the specified point. I have read nothing to support this theory. Please let me know if it is correct.
    Thanks for the help!

  • Help with formatting multiline output into comma delimited ordered output

    I have 2 tables:
    SQL> desc table_1;
    Name Null? Type
    ===================================
    ID NOT NULL NUMBER
    DATA1 NOT NULL VARCHAR2(440)
    DATA2 NOT NULL VARCHAR2(1024)
    SQL> desc table_2;
    Name Null? Type
    ===================================
    ID NOT NULL NUMBER
    ATTNAME NOT NULL VARCHAR2(255)
    ATTVAL                          VARCHAR2 (4000)
    DATA1 NOT NULL CHAR(1)
    DATA2                          VARCHAR2 (2000)
    DATA3                          VARCHAR2 (255)
    I need to get ATTVAL from where e.g. ATTNAME=att_name1 to ATTNAME=att_name6 from every entry (with its unique ID), and format the output into comma delimited format in e.g. this order:
    att_val1,att_val3,att_val6,att_val4,att_val5,att_val6
    So e.g. for entry with ID "9812" from the query below, the output I need would be:
    187,179,156,134,1436,1809
    What I've got so far is as follows:
    SQL> SELECT id,attname,attval FROM table_2 WHERE id in (SELECT id from table_1 WHERE data2='xxx')
    AND attname in ('att_name1','att_name3','att_name6','att_name4','att_name5','att_name6');
    ID               ATTNAME               ATTVAL
    ===============================
    1970 att_name1 123
    1970 att_name2 abc
    1970 att_name3 1234

    1970 att_name6 ghj
    9812 att_name4 134
    9812 att_name5 1436
    9812 att_name3 156
    9812 att_name1 187

    77 att_name4 1345
    77 att_name2 1345
    77 att_name6 1345
    but I don't know how to format the output comma limited in certain order. (or if this is the best way of getting the data out)
    Would someone have idea how this could be done?

    I got much further now :).
    I've got Oracle 10g So I used the "SYS_CONNECT_BY_PATH" for my query.
    Now I get the output in the format I want, however, it comes out in the order that the attributes are (which is pretty random).The values you posted are in order: 'attval1' < 'attval2' < ...
    So I'm using this now(had to use "|" as separator because SYS_CONNECT_BY_PATH would not work with comma due to some of the attval having comma in them ):The values you posted don't contain and commas.
    You're hiding what the problem is. It would really help if you posted actual data. It always helps if you post CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements for a little sample data, and the results you want from that data.
    Assuming you really have something that has to be in a certain order, and that order is not based on anything in the values themselves, then DECODE might be a good way to do it. Storing the sort value in a table might be even better.
    It looks like you were using an Oracle 9 exanple. In Oracle 10, using SYS_CONNECT_BY_PATH is simpler:
    SELECT     id
    ,     LTRIM ( SYS_CONNECT_BY_PATH (attval, '|')
               , '|'
               )          AS attvals
    FROM     (
              SELECT     id
              ,     attval
              ,     ROW_NUMBER () OVER ( PARTITION BY  id
                                  ORDER BY          DECODE (...)
                                )     AS curr
              WHERE     id     IN (
                             SELECT  id
                             FROM     table_1
                             WHERE     data2     = 'xxx'
              AND     attname     IN ('attname1','attname2','attname3','attname4','attname5','attname6')
    WHERE     CONNECT_BY_ISLEAF     = 1
    START WITH     curr     = 1
    CONNECT BY     curr     = PRIOR curr + 1
         AND     id     = PRIOR id
    ;You don't need two almost-identical ROW_NUMBERs; one will do just fine.

  • Mixing formats in sequence

    I have an upcoming project that will be using a lot of file footage in various formats. The video has not been ingested yet, but will consist of Mini DV 16:9, DVC Pro 50 16:9, DVC PRO HD 1080i and some 720p as well. Also, I'll have to rip some video from DVD. I'll be working with FCP 6. Final delivery will be on DVD. Ratio of HD to SD looks like it will be about 50/50. I'm trying to figure out the best workflow here. I'm thinking my sequence might be DVC Pro 50 Anamorphic. Should I convert the miniDV to that prior to editing along with the HD footage? Or should I drop the HD stuff into the sequence as is and render away? This is by far the most "mixed" project I've had and I'm not sure exactly how to proceed. I do know that I do not want to upres the SD stuff since it's going to end up SD anyway. I'm also not working on my own system for this project. Newer Mac and OS, but still FCP 6.0.6. Don't have the exact specs at hand at the moment.

    You could transcode it all to DVCPRO50 or ProRes (in SD 16:9) before you start and save the headache of the rendering during the edit, but the rest of your planned workflow looks OK to me.

  • Mixed formating on boolean text

    Is it possible to programatically set boolean text on a control with mixed formating, e.g. 1 word in bold and one not. It is possible to do it manually.

    Actually, with later versions of LV, you should
    be able use the Boolean Text properties for Font
    and such.
    To apply the properties to just a subset of text
    use the selection first and the property change
    will only affect the selected text.

  • The best format for output

    Hi All,
    working in animation project to be broadcasted on a TV channel as HD1080 50i,
    1- all the animation layers was rendered from TOONBOOM as .SWF to keep it in vector for compositing issue.
    Dose SWF lose any quality? we always use TGA sequence with alpha in our past SD projects but now we found SWF is a smaller file size and allows zooming Because it keeps all vector lines.
    2- compositing each scene in after effects cs6 and then render them.
    What is the best format for output to deal with premiere cs6 as a real time playback ( my editing pc includes gtx680 4gb., many HGST 3tb with raid controller,64g ram, aja kona 3g) so do I go with TGA sequence (I think it will destroy the raid Because of the large number of small-sized files in read and write ) or MOV uncompressed (I'm afraid of the space size and don’t know it will play in real time ) or what is the best compressed format Maintaining video image quality as its now will be my only master source?
    Many thanks,
    sherif

    Thanks Rick for your reply,
    Regarding the SWF i moved to flash pro forums and they are supporting me now,
    My system is a pc, win.64, I7-3930K, 64G RAM, EVGA GTX680 4G, Many HGST 3TB with raid controler,
    Some advised me to go with Quicktime Prores HQ or DNXHD or DPX ,
    In this year project my client's requirement for delivery is :
    DNxHD 120 Codec, wrapped with QuickTime rapper, which means a file with MOV extension and the codec used is DNxHD 120 ( 1080@50i HD)
    So do i work with dnxhd 120 from the beginning to the delivery? (and it will be my only master source) or another format encode it at the end to dnxhd 120? ( i will distribut this project to many channels after the first run exclusivity period end with different requirements).
    Thanks,
    Sherif
