HD Sony Camcorder ACVHD file and Win CS5.5 question

I am thinking of upgrading to an HD Camcorder.  I am looking at models from Sony, Canon and Panasonic. One of the models I am looking at is the Sony HDR CV700V.  My questions: #1 Can Premiere Pro 5.5 handle Sony ACVHD files and specifically 1080P/60P files?  I have heard that 1080P/60P is nonstandard ACVHD.  Sony's website says that Sony AVCHD files cannot be imported into computers.  I have searched everywhere and I cannot find the answer.  There is no point in buying this camcorder if I cannot import ACVHD files into CS5.5.  #2 If there are file limitations specific to Sony's 1080p ACVHD is there another camcorder that does not have this problem such as Canon Vixia HG G10 or Panasonic HDC-TM 900. #3 Of the 3 manufacturers, Sony, Canon and Panasonic, does anyone have a recommendation as to which HD Camcorder ACVHD files work best with Win CS5.5?

I use PPro on a Mac instead of Windows, but the computing platform is irrelevant for your question.  I'm with Harm: Sony's statement is pure bunk.  I have 2 Sony Handycams that cut to AVCHD, and all I do is remove the SD card from the camera, then pop it into a card reader on my Mac.  Then I copy the entire filesystem over, and voila: I can edit it in PPro.
If the camera you're looking at doesn't cut to SD but instead to its own internal drive, then you'll need to connect the camera itself to the computer via USB.  It should appear to your computer as a removable drive, allowing you to copy the files over.

  • How can I process a Sony A7 RAW file into Photoshop CS5.

How can I process a Sony A7 RAW file into Photoshop CS5.  I tried the file DNG converter 8.3, but it did not work.  I was able to download it, but upon reading the memory chip from Photoshop CS5, it reads the jpg files fine, but not the RAW files.  I thought the DNG converter 8.3 was the right file, but apparently it is not.  Perhaps I need to do something in Photoshop CS5 to initiate it, or place it in a particular directory.. Please help.

First of all, you should have used the Adobe DNG Converter 8.6, not an old, obsolete version.  Always use the very latest version.  8.3 was simply the first ACR version to support your camera model, that's all.
Note that the DNG Converter works only on folders, not on individual raw files.  Put all your Sony raw files in a folder and run the Converter on that folder containing the raw files.
I have absolutely no clue as to what on Earth you mean by : "upon reading the memory chip from Photoshop CS5".
You also need to make sure that CS5 is fully updated.  You cannot rely on the highly and notoriously unreliable Adobe auto updater to tell whether you have the latest update installed or not.
I still have no idea what platform you are on, Mac or Windows. Please read the following for next time:

what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far,

  • Problem with CS3 InCopy text files and InDesign CS5

I have a large annual magazine that I am developing. There is one section that doesn't change much from year to year and I was hoping to grandfather in the InCopy text files from last year's edition. I've successfully used this strategy the past few years without issue. However, now when I try to check out those text files from last year, I receive the following message "This story needs to be coverted to "InCopy Document" format in order to edit it."
I am running both InDesign CS5 and InCopy CS5 in SL 10.6.4. The previous year's magazine document was in CS3 InDesign format and the text files were in InCopy CS3. Is there some sort of compatibility issue? Is there a specific method for converting them so I can check them out in InDesign? I haven't attempted to check them out in InCopy CS5 yet but I will try that next. But I really need the ability to check out the content via InDesign too.
    Thanks in advance.
    Robert

AFAIK, you're going to actually need to open the INCX files in InCopy and then resave them as ICML file. You can then relink them all in InDesign.
Other choice is killing the InCopy links and then relinking everything.
Best practice would be to finish any job started in CS3 with CS3 and then move to CS5 with new projects.

  • I downloaded a film from a sony camcorder to iMovie and then burned to a DVD in iDvd. When showing it on my TV their is a shimmering in certain edges.

I downloaded a movie from a Sony camcorder to iMovie, did some editing and transfered it to iDVD where I burned it onto a DVD.
When I showed it on my TV I had shimmering on certain edges. Has anyone had this happen and if so how did you eleminate it?

    Hi
    A. Do not Use - Share to iDVD - in any iMovie version at all !
    B. Start a BRAND NEW iDVD project
    C. in iMovie'08 to 11 -  Share to Media Browser and as LARGE - NOT HD or other resolution as quality will be even worse
    - in iMovie HD6 - just close it and from within iDVD import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it)
    - FinalCut - Export as QuickTime Movie - NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION - AT ALL !
    D. When in iDVD - see to that in the Lay-out menu (when it looks like a box-plott) there ARE NOTHING in the upper left most box (Auto Start box). As this overruns any Menu.
    E. Save as a DiskImage - TEST this first - befor burning any DVDs

  • Sony DCR SR42 files and Final Cut Express

Hi - I am the owner of a new MacBook which I bought specifically to edit movies from my Sony hard disk Camcorder. I have since found that this model is not on the list of supported camcorders for iMovie and in fact iMovie does not recognise the mpeg files saved by the camcorder.
Can anyone tell me whether Final Cut Express would work with this camera? If not I will probably have to exchange my mac for a PC laptop.

    Hi there,
I'm having the same problem with the same camera. I'm replacing it with a mini DV (picture quality is much better and so is compatibility with iMovie '06 and FCE).
But I've still got a ton of footage from the Sony that I need to convert.
When you converted your footage, what file format did you use? Were you happy with the new quality? And was the resulting footage easy to work with? Anything else you can share?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Sony Camcorder VOB File import

I have a Sony DVD Camcorder. The video files are created in a VOB file type extension. It seems that I need to convert the file types to be compatible and import to imovie. How do I convert and with what? Will I loose quality in the conversion process? What camcorder type will be more compatible with imovie? Does anyone want to buy my Sony DVD camcorder?

    Hi!
I use freeware called OpenShiiva to convert my VOB files to mpeg-4's. It's been handy once I realized I couldn't sync my Sony Handycam DCR-DVD201 to my iMac. I've never noticed a decline in quality. Here's a link to the site where you can download this software:
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/11973
I'm wondering if my camcorder is now compatible with iMovie 08 b/c apple has tested some of the newer sony camcorders and they do work:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306171#2
However, I will have to upgrade to Tiger before upgrading to iLife 08.
Fortunately, I have a friend with a PC who wants to buy my camera.
    Good luck!

  • I have a Sony Camcorder DCR-TRV33 and have hooked the firewire cable to my iMac.  However, it doesn'

I have a Sony DCR-TRV33 camcorder and it hooked to my iMac with the firewire cable but the iMac doesn't seem to recognize the camera.  The camera is set to VCR.  This particular model is not included in the supported camera list for ilife but seems to be compatible from everything else I have read.  Anyone have any ideas as to what to do??

To import from this camera, you need a Firewire cable.
Sony's name for FireWire is i.Link, so that is where you need to plug in.
If you have a relatively new Mac, it will have Firewire 800. You will need a 9 pin to 4 pin Firewire Cable. You can find them inexpensively at www.monoprice.com.  If you have an older iMac, it may have Firewire 400 (or it may have both). In this case, you need the  6 pin to 4 pin Firewire cable. Some companies sell adapters that will convert a 6 pin to 4 pin cable to 9 pins. Avoid these. They do not work.

  • PSE (ext) Files and Photoshop CS5

Forgive me if this question has been asked before. I have recently graduated from PSE6 to Photoshop CS5. I have some old albums that I produced in PSE6 with a pse file extension. Is it possible to open these  files in CS5 as I would like to use the templates. If not, is there a CS5 alternative set of templates or do these need to produced manually?

The pse ext. is just a link to the folder that contains the project files.
    (probably in the psd format)
The pse and the folder that contains the project should be named the same.
Open the psd files in photoshop.

  • MFX files and Adobe CS5

I just got a Panasonic hpx 250 camera and it's native files are MFX files.  They are not compatible with my software, premiere CS5.  Can anyone recommend a converter or other fix that will allow me to use MFX files with premiere, something that will link the audio and video files without degrading the video quality, or taking forever to render?
    Thanks,

Ask in the Premiere forum, though, to be honest, you're trying to fix things the hard way. Simply upgrade to CS6 or Creative Cloud.

  • Managing files and other newbie type questions

I'm trying to decide between FCPX and Premiere Elements. I manage most of my media with Aperture. I've learned a whole lot already in a few solid hours of use of the trial. The integration with Aperture/iPhoto is very nice and keeps me out of Adobe Organizer which I do not care for. I have a signficant time investment in Aperture libraries, so the extra $$ for FCPX might be worth it -- if I can learn it.
It appears that FCPX currently will not directly import AVCHD (from Sony) with 5.1 -- it is brought in as stereo. Or am I missing something? I can get it in re-wrapping it with ClipWrap. But that adds $50 to an already expensive piece of software (for me.) I have an older mini-DVD camcorder (also Sony). Actually the camcorder is toast, but I have the mini-DVDs. Can I import these and keep the 5.1 or do they need an intermediate step?
I can't figure out how to go from FCPX to Aperture, if that's possible. If I import with FCPX, do I have to turn around and re-import into Aperture? (We really like having it all in one app for browsing the photos/videos.)
If I import with FCPX and do not optimize, I understand I can do this later on the fly if I choose to use the clip, right? The unoptimized video quality of the imported clips is not worse than the source, correct? This will save me a ton of disk space if I can use this fast, unoptimized import. I don't edit 80% of the source.
I've figured out how to do a Picture-in-Picture type deal but I can't find in help or elsewhere how to resize/transition the Picture-in-Picture. Here's what I'm doing: We're filming a high school band. The primary video is the big picture, wide view of the band. Then when a soloist performs, I overlay a separate video of them moving into position in "picture-in-picture" type of window. When they actually perform, I would like to put in a transition where this picture in picture "explodes" or zooms out to fill the screen. I can't figure this out. When the soloist is done, I want to reverse it. This whole process looks like a perfect example of multi-cam edits, but I'm still trying to figure that out.
    Thanks for any pointers.

Ok, multi-cam is not the way to go for this. Thanks.
Keywords... that's what I'm discovering now. Very nice organizational stuff in there I've been missing with iMovie/PrE. I don't have that many clips yet, but eventually this will be very handy.
I'm going away from the PIP deal. We tested it last night and even on a 55" screen, it's really just kinda gee-whiz. You don't get enough detail to see what he's doing. So I'm just transitioning now from main clip to soloists and back. The wide screen shot was totally useless in a little PIP window anyway. Since the whole show is only 10 minutes, I'll just give them two videos. One edited with soloists/visuals one raw video of the whole band for marchign critique.
Actually, if you decide that the PIP stuff does not work, this brings multicam back into the process.
PIP was the only reason why I advised against going with multicam for this.
It would be nice if the end user could pick the camera angle they wanted while watching.
Thanks for the inputs. I will read up on keyframes as you suggested.
    -Jack
You can't offer that kind of interactivity to the user, but with multicam you can offer your best choice of angles - and can even easily produce two or more different versions.

  • Importing video from Sony Camcorder DCR-SR87 to IMovie

I have a sony camcorder DCR-SR87 and a MacBook running the latest operating system and and IMovie 11.   According to the Apple techincal people the new operating system will not read the format from my camcorder so I can't import my video.  Has anyone found a work around for this problem?

I am not sure why this camera will not work. If Apple Support is telling you that they can't make it work, then I'll take your word for it.
There is still a way that might work for you.
First, get MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5. This is a free App for your Mac.
Drag one of the MPEG2 files from the camera (thorugh the Finder) into MPEG Streamclip.
Try FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME. Choose Apple Intermediate Codec as the codec.
You can import the Apple Intermediate Codec MOV files into iMovie using FILE/IMPORT/MOVIE.
If this works, there is a way do to app your clips in batch.
MPEG Streamclip may tell you that you need to purchase the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component. This component is from Apple and costs $20 to download. Follow the instructions on the MPEG Streamclip website for how to install this component. Apple will tell you that you do not need this component for Lion, but MPEG Streamclip may still need it.
Then try to do the conversion again.
Let me know if any of this is not clear.

  • Cannot import videos from a sony camcorder.

cannot import videos from a sony camcorder.

Hi cape_surfers, and a warm welcome to the forums!
UPDATE1: About the MPEG-2 component included with iMovie ‘08
UPDATE2: After raising a stink, I figured that I’d spend a little more time trying to figure out how to make my Handycam work with native iMovie ‘08. Turns out that you have to turn on the camera, wait for OS X pick it up as a USB storage device, and then hang tight for three or four minutes until iMovie detects that your USB storage device is actually a camcorder, and presents the import dialog. I’m glad that I can import native MPEG-2, but am somewhat puzzled by the delay.

  • Does simple file and folder sharing on an iMac work with OSX Server?

    Hi There
I wonder if I should install OSX Server on an iMac wher several users work on the same files and folders.
My question - before I do something I might regret:
Does simple file and folder sharing on an iMac within several users really work with the help of OSX Server?
All I want to be able to do:
Admin creates a new folder1 and gives it read- and write access for user1 and user2.
    User1 creates a subfolder1 in folder1, and a document1 in subfolder1.
    User2 edits document1. Later Admin edits document1.
All these simple editing of files and folders (and subfolders) within a main folder should be possible. This is not possible now.
Is everything clear? I'm not a network specialist or something, I just want to give some co-workers access to some data on my computer without problems.

So what you need are recursive permissions.
I suggest you create a group and add user1 and user2 to that group. You can name that group whatever you want, but for now i will call it FSUsers
Execute this in terminal. Replace FSUsers with your new group
    sudo chmod -R +a "FSUsers allow list,add_file,search,add_subdirectory,delete_child,readattr,writeattr,readextat tr,writeextattr,readsecurity,file_inherit,directory_inherit" /Users/Shared/*
Replace /Users/Shared with the location of your shared folder. Make sure you keep the /* at the end (this allows all subfolders and files to get the same permissions.
If you need to add people to the share just add them to the FSUsers group, the FSUsers group should should also be allowed in the sharing preferences.

  • I am writing an interactive book and want to use media files and stuff.

I am writing an interactive book and want to use media files and stuff. My question is: If I want to sell this book in the iBookstore,
may I use photos I find on google images and media i find on youtube? Or must all be my own stuff?

No !  well not just any photo image or "media". The person who created the photo images has a copyright protection IF  he/she wishes to impose it - ditto video and other  media.
However if its out of copyright by  virtue of age and certain other factors - its considered in "The Public Domain" which is why you see paintings by the Impressionists all over chocolate boxes and posters to name but two!
There are websites offering images donated by the creators and all for free.
Taking and using a picture you do not own copyright and placing online where it can be downloaded is  first "publishing" and you  need permission and placing in a situation where it can be copied and re-distributed is a breach of copyright.
Look at the  tail end credits on any DVD...  the above is always  included.
Others rmay  correct me but Copyright in some countries is vaild from creation until 50 years after the death of the creator. However, that is not always the case.  Example, assume I am bequeathed a photo archive and on the  last day year 50,  I  publish a completely new version of the archive, wizzed through Photoshop, cleaned, cropped and modified in other ways.. then I can assert my claim for copyright of the renewed archive, but its a bit more complicated!!!
You can search for "Free Photo Images (  media) , or royalty free images and if you land on a particular website you can ask permission. If you send me a request, my reply will be NO... and you get a warning of dire consequences if your infringe my copyright!  Other may be more lenient and in fact feel pretty good to be  asked.
A way to get some guidance is to check out Wikipedia and the many  images included in its subject matter, check out the copyright status.
Beware of using  photo images of paintings in  Galleries and Museums, they may have copyright conditions.. but one can always contact them to seek  permission.
Search  for  Copyright and ownership and it should bring up some good information. Depending on your country.. it may have its own  Copyright website. USA are more detailed than most, The UK has the 1988 Copyright Act.
Also remember that all photo images carry exif embedded data which  among other things carries the copyright information and shows up in a google search for the right  keyword!  Scanned images processed through Photoshop and other editors  can have the metatdata added also.

Try opening the file in iMovie
Try changing the filename extension to ".dv"
    Here's an interesting one: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6172027
But my personal favorite idea is to just re-export the file from a PC in a better supported codec
(BTW If you don't have access to a PC then you can easily install Bootcamp on your Mac .... you can even download a free prerelease copy of Windows 7 to install on the Bootcamp partition if you're quick)
