HD space disapeared... ACK!!!

I am a new Mac user, and I have had my MBP for about two months. And even though I have put a few small programs on it(plus Call of Duty 2), I have also deleted certain things such as the Office Trial, and numerous other programs that I have downloaded..such as game demos/etc. I have even put a good chunk of my iTunes vidoes, onto cd-r's.
My problem is.. is that my hard drive(80 Gig) has shrunk down to 36.7 Gigs. And that was after I went through and deleted more apps/etc. Im not an idiot.. hehe, but I know there has to be something hidden that I'm missing. Any ideas?
A guy over on the MacBook Pro forum told me to clean install. And believe me, as much as I despise Windows, there was always a way to get in and find out where your HD was being eaten up. Any way, other than the clean install to get my HD space back??

My mistake, I don't have the full suite installed, only iPhoto.
My Library shows only 573 MB in Finder, that's why his 9.74 GB seemed abnormally large, but then I have stripped out the GarageBand loops and all but the relevant printer drivers.
Justin, if you're still with us and haven't embarked on any kind of a re-install, try clearing Safari's cache and rebooting. Then re check WhatSize.

You can do this without WhatSize. Open a new Finder window, select 'View' - List, 'View' again - 'Show View Options' (or Finder, Command+N, Command+2 & Command+J ) and select the 'Calculate all Sizes' box. The sizes get calculated as you select the disclosure triangles next to each folder.

Hi Justin,
The beauty of an Archive and Install is that it will keep everything intact except what you choose to not install when you choose Customize. You will insert your install disk #1, and restart. Then you go through the prompts to re-install. Look for the Options tab, where you will choose Archive and Install.
There is a check box that is checked by default to choose to save all your data. Then in the next window, you will see the Customize tab. Click on that and choose the items to install. I uncheck all the boxes, except I pick the applications I want installed. I also have a driver disk for my printer, but if you don't you can choose to install the specific brand drivers for your printer.
After this is complete, run Software Update in System Preferences, to bring the OS up to date. Lastly you should Repair Permissions, located in Applications-Utilities-Disk Utility. After all of this you will have a folder Previous System Folder located on your HD. Once you determined all is running good, you can delete it.
Once you do this, then you have learned how to reinstall, if you ever have to do it again in the future. You also know exactly what is installed. Then you can check your disk space, and know that you don't have space wasted, by un-needed stuff.

Hard drive space disapearing in front of my eyes

I am new to the world of mac's and have ony just moved across from PC.
And i must say i am loving the mac, and wish that i moved across before.
But, I have noticed that i have used a lot of HD space, which i cant work out.
finder is saying that i have used 179gb out of 500. which as i have open in "get info" it is going up by small amounts, with the mac not doing any thing.
I have looked at all my folders and i am not using any more than 150gb
where is it going to? it is possiable i have mac virus?

I have experienced the same thing myself. I've been asking for advice on it for years here on various Macs. I've wasted my time on various programs to get a report, still no answer.
Generally Macs have a tendency to cache everything, particularly the I-programs. I-Tunes and I-Photo make multiple copies of the original material. Safari seems to cache even when you aren't doing anything (though it deletes when you quit). More complex programs also cache. I found Adobe After Effects sending a cache to my main hard drive in Gbs.
Sort your hard drive by size. Look in the big folders. With a little experience, look in the folders that grow. Logically that is how you find what is growing.

Can I use InDesign in the cloud? Or must I download it?

The whole Creative Cloud nomenclature is a marketing thing. InDesign (as well as Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat) continue to be installed and executed on your own computer! The only cloud aspect of this is that you download from a server and there is a built-in feature in InDesign 9.1 to syncronize files on an Adobe server-based cloud directory.

Ack! Spaces is not working and I can't get to the system prefs!

So i thought I'd give "Spaces" another try. I clicked the button to turn it all and everything went haywire.
2 dozen apps open, several with dozens of windows each.
And now I can't get to them. I can switch to them via dock or command-tab, but none of the windows are visible. This includes, unfortunately, the actual system preferences window, which would allow me to shut spaces off.
If I press F19, all the windows for everything become visible, but if I try to click on any of them, they all disappear.
I have tried navigating through the spaces using my arrow keys, and while I do get the spaces indicator window popping up showing me shifting from space to space, most of the applications fail to appear.
I know I could just reboot and that would probably let me back in control, but I don't want to just crash out the apps I have up with the multiple windows open!
Help!

Rebooting won't just 'crash' the apps. They are told to quit by Finder so that the restart will proceed in an orderly way.
If an application has a file open, it should pop up with a request to save option.
If it does, and finder won't let you click on the option you want, then you're in a bind anyway. If you can't bring up Activity Monitor and quit applications from there, then you will need to do a 'force quit' - Command + Option + Escape and choose to shut down the applications you can.
Although it's never recommended, you will probably need to just force the system down and reboot. Repair Permissions whenever you have to 'force' anything.

All my icons and login space has disapeared through the top of my computer I hve no way to type emails?

I do not have to type my emails or pay bills?

Do you mean that all the Firefox toolbars have disappeared?
Make sure that you do not run Firefox in full screen mode (press F11 or Fn + F11 to toggle; Mac: command+Shift+F).

My HD space is disapearing right infront of my eyes

As I write this I can see and hear my HD filling up with God knows what. I have nothing running. I'm missing about 300Gigs. At present I have only 50 GB's left and it's dropping as I type. I'm going to boot from my Statup DVD and see what I can do. I've added up all the folders size and can't find the file that's eating my HD. down to 49 GB's now.

Do kill the file and it would seem - repair your drive and files with Disk Warrior 4, from another disk drive.
Running Applejack regularly can help. Do you run the
sudo periodic daily weekly monthly
command at all? doesn't 'have to be every day, I prefer to not have some 3rd party program do it, or leave a system on (there should be a preference) to make it easy to set the time to something like 8 AM... some even think the system does run it "at next available opportunity."
When you clone a system SuperDuper and CCC will skip the log and temp files, cache files which will get rebuilt anyway, which is why it is useful sometimes to do a backup - erase - restore.

Essentially, the bare issue is that you have a 500GB hard drive with only 10GB free. That is not sufficient to run the system properly. The two options you have are to move/remove files to another location, or to install a larger hard drive (eg 2TB). Drive space has nothing to do with SMC firmware, and usually large media files are to blame.
My first recommendation is this: download and run the free OmniDiskSweeper. This will identify the exact size of all your folders - you can drill down into the subfolders and figure out where your largest culprits are. For example, you might find that your Pictures folder contains both an iPhoto Library and copies that you've brought in from a camera but are outside the iPhoto Library structure. Or perhaps you have a lot of purchased video content in iTunes.
If you find files that you KNOW you do not need, you can delete them. Don't delete them just because you have a backup, since if the backup fails, you will lose all your copies.
Don't worry about "cleaners" for now - they don't save much space and can actually cause problems. Deal with the large file situation first and see how you get on.
Let us know what you find out, and if you manage to get your space back.

Controlling fire in Space Invaders game

Hi again,
still working through the tutorial on Space Invaders in Flash
MX 2004 (bit out of date, I know).
I've got the player craft under mouse control. What I don't
like about the game is that you can fire as rapidly as you wan't,
though the number of bullets is limited. You can change this limit
in the variable - I would rather have it though that you can only
have a set number of bullets in play at a time (at the moment, if
you go over the limit, the uppermost bullets just disapear).
Here is the code:

I am unsure though whether to insert this within my existing

/ then" statement.
Any suggestions on this method? I know it may be asking a bit
much, but if you could even complete this piece of code that would
be magic!

How to change replication manager ack policy?

Hello all
I have installed my Berkley_db and I enabled replication using the following command:
-enable-pthread-api
Now, I would like to change my replication manager ack policy and perform some tests.
I know that I have to use this method:
repmngr_set_ack_policy
However, I don't know how to call the above method...
Shall I insert an entry in a specific file?
Shall I give it as a command line?
I must note that I replicate some data in other three servers. The change of the ack policy will automatically work and affect all three servers or will I have to perform the changes manually on every one of them?

A few points to note are:
0. You can set the ack policy programmatcially or via an environment
DB_CONFIG file. If using a DB_CONFIG enter "repmgr_set_ack_policy"
a blank space and the ack_policy parameter required. For example:
repmgr_set_ack_policy DB_REPMGR_ACKS_ALL
A DB_CONFIG file is read when the database environment is opened,
so it will overrule any configuration done before that time.
1. All sites in a replication group need to be configured with the
same acknowledgement policy.
2. The DB_ENV->repmgr_set_ack_policy() method configures the database
environment, not only the operations performed using the specified
DB_ENV handle.
3. You can invoke DB_ENV->repmgr_set_ack_policy() method at any time
during the life of the application.

RGB Working Color SPace ....

I'm very confused with this stuff ...
I read that when we setup Photoshop we should set the working color space
rgb to Adobe RGB or ProPhoto RGB .... fine I understand this up to a point.
However what happend if the monitor can not display the color space ?
For example when I display the Color Picker on my external NEC monitor
everything always looks good but on my internal laptop monitor there is
banding in the Color Picker.
If I set the working color space to srgb then the banding disapears.
So just how should I set all this up ?

rely on a calibrated precision monitor (not the laptop),
define all images by AdobeRGB and improve them by Levels,
Curves and Sharpening.
Check occasionally by Proof Colors / Gamut Warning
(using the monitor profile) whether the colors are out
of gamut for the monitor.
The monitor is probably not the final output device.
If the output device should be e.g. offset ISOCoated,
then check by Proof Colors / Gamut Warning whether the
colors are out of gamut for ISOCoated. If this should
be the case, then modify the RGB source until only small
parts of the image are out of gamut (yellow blossoms).
Otherwise larger parts might be affected by posterization
(blue sky).
Theoretically one can use 'desaturate by 20%', which should
show larger space colors mapped to the smaller space.
I don't use it, I'm preferring the gamut warning - recently
for a couple of landscape photos with very blue skies,
yellow blossoms and orange sunsets.

QuickTime mov file disapears after exporting !

After having done this successfuly a number of times, when I try to export a FCP4 project using QuickTime conversion, the sequence renders all the way untill 100%, but the box does not close and the file just disapears... however it's space is used in the hard drives... Can someone please help ?

But I think the problem was solved...thanks to you.
I firstly tried to do exactly what you suggested: Exported the project as QT, then quited FCP, dragged the file into Compressor's Batch window, told the compressor to make a MPEG2 frm it... and here it stoped working...Submit ws subdued and I could not make it work...Then I took a look at the file QT had exported...it was a 303Mb FCP movie, not a QT.mov file, and the sequence was about 4.5 Gb !
Here I tried something else:
First, from FCP, Printed the sequence to video. Then captured it to FCP again to a new project, through Log and Capture, this time it did not need rendering and in the Capture Scratch folder after saving the new project was a QT.movie file; Dragged it to Compressor and made a MPEG2 file...
On the phone with the project's author I heard for the first time the original QT.mov files he gave me were in fact exported from iTunes under MacOS 9.2...I don't know if this can mean anything, since I have worked before with QT files exported from iTunes with no problem...
Can you please give me your insight about all this ?

Used Space vs. Free Space

I am sure I am probably just missing something crucial, since I am almost completely computer illiterate...but, I have taken all of the songs off my iPod and its saying that I have used 3.12 GB and only 620.5 MB free. I only have 1.64 GB of songs in my library on iTunes, but again, absolutely nothing on the ipod itself. Can anyone help?

I assume you are manually managing your music (dragging stuff onto the nano)?
You might consider auto-updating and point the nano at certain playlists in your iTunes (I assume you are using iTunes?).
This way everytime you connect the nano to iTunes it gets rid of songs that are no longer in your playlists. This way all you have to do is connect, let iTunes and the nano sync, then eject your nano. No more worrying about running out of space on your nano.
Look into creating smart playlists, they can automatically put together stuff for you such as "fresh songs" (songs loaded into iTunes in the last month), "forgotten songs" (songs with a playcount of zero", "90's country hits" (genre=country, song published in the 90's)
As you add more music to your iTunes, these playlists change accordingly.
One of the cool thing about the "forgotten music" playlist is once you listen to the music on your nano (or iTunes) the next time you sync, the song automatically disapears because its playcount is no longer zero! cool stuff!
