HD Space opened up big time, cant complain

Just wondering if anyone else had this occur. With the recent 10.5.2 download I noticed a little while later my HD size grew alot. Prior I had maybe 25 GB available, after install over 100GB available. I did not delete items just really weird and wonder if that was normal or something else going on?
Thanks!!

This is probably a terribly silly question. But I've just ordered a refurbished iMac 21.5" 3.2GHz i3 with a 1T HD, and I was wondering about using part of that hard drive space for backing up with Time Machine.
You can back up to a partition on your internal HD. Time Machine will send you a message about how it's not a good idea, but it can be done. And note that the partition should be much larger than the amount of data on the OSX partition, so you may not have enough room. See #1 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).
Also, would I be able to back-up from my new computer to my old computer using my wireless home network?
You can back up to a shared drive/partition on another Mac, if it's running Leopard or Snow Leopard, but it will be much faster and more reliable to back up to a directly-connected external HD.
If you really want to do that, see #22 in the FAQ for instructions.

Just to assist those who might help you with this, please give the exact version of Photoshop CS6 you are running, for instance CS6 13.0.1.3.
I had already asked for that in my previous post, but I guess you didn't quite know what I was referencing when I typed "exact version".
Sorry, I cannot help you myself because I don't deal with that kind of 3D images, don't use Windows, and in all frankness I'm not quite following your last post.
Also please give the exact model of your graphics card, so they can check whether it is on the list of cards tested by Adobe.
    Thank you.

    Hello amyluvscarolyn
Depending on what version of Mac OS X you are running, you may have a newer version. If you are needing QuickTime 7, then check out the article below for the correct links to download for your system.

  • Why cant i open iphoto in time machine?

When I click on iphoto when i'm in time machine, I get a dialogue box that asks if I want to open it in QuickTime or QuickTime 7.  It doesn't matter which I click on, iPhoto doesn't open. How do I get to my photos?

You can't open iPhoto in Time Machine, you need to restore it first.

  • Firefox 4 sucks big time. I uninstalled and downloaded 3.6.17.

Sorry Mozilla, but Firefox 4 sucks big time. I uninstalled and downloaded 3.6.17. I've turned off automatic updates. V4 breaks JQuery and who knows what else, so I'll be a lifelong customer of my v3.6.17 version, coz I'm just not going to have established, clean, awesome code killed by the browser! Only I build web apps so I've got to get all my clients to stop upgrading, too. I've been a Firefox guy for years now, but this is the end of my rope. Chrome is pretty good, as is Safari. I guess one of these is going to be my browser going forward.

I got back from Firefox 9 to my older 3.6.8 version. Despite of the really ugly new look there are silly annoyances like the trasposed right click pop up menu "open in new window - open in new tab" I cant tell you how many times ive right clicked and hit open in new window instead of open in new tab
However, the great flop are the disabled add-ons I was accustomed to (PoxySel and Auto shut down among others )
Many years ago I choose Firefox because the add-ons power but if you take them off and destroy the UI I was comfortable with you are inviting me to try ANY other new browser...like the so-talked Chrome.
Seriously, you should be careful with retro-compatibility. At least, give the user the chance to keep the old look, layout and utilities.
    Thank you folks!

  • How many Safari windows can I open at one time?

I have an old habit of keeping lots of Safari windows open at one time, instead of closing them as I go. I'm using a G4 iBook with 768 of RAM over an Airport wireless system. I have at least 40 gigs of open space on my HD and recently repaired permissions and emptied cache and history, but it takes FOREVER for new pages to load. I've enabled the interference filter, which seemed to help for a day or so, but I'm back to beach ball ****. Meanwhile, my spouse is using a TiBook 667 with Airport card on the same Airport base station, and has none of the delays I do.
Does having a couple dozen Safari windows open at one time slow the whole program down? If not, anyone have any other ideas?

iTunes will only open one library at a time.
    Regards.

  • How many apps can be open at one time?

My friend did not know how to close apps. I showed her and was shocked at how many she had open at one time. Everything since she got her ipad over a year ago. She must have had 30 games, pictures, internet, lists, contacts, mail, video, everything was open.
It made me curious if there is a maximum number that can be open at one time, and if at some point will they automatically close themselves?
    Thanks

Open apps consume almost no resources, unless they run background refresh. Once they have been inactive for a while, iOS writes the current state back to storage, to free up RAM for other processes. You can see this when some apps, particularly big heavy games like Infinity Blade, relaunch from the starting splash screens instead of taking up precisely where they were left.
It's still good practice to close down stuff every so often, but not necessary, as you've discovered.

  • Photoshop CS1 wont open anything - big issues!

    Hi
Photoshop has started to do an odd thing ...and I am in crisis as I am a photographer and kind of need it!
It will not open ANY image file, of any size, or any time via any opening method - double clicking on the file, dragging onto the dock icon, using Finder and File Menu>Open or going into P/Shop and using File Menu>Open.
Photoshop opens fine and does all the usual things when opening an image file - it even gives me the dialogue box when the Colour Settings do not match the work space.
Then, every time it gives me a message saying: "Could not complete your request because of a program error".
It give the same message if I try to create a new file within P/Shop.
    Thus far I have:
    - Repaired disk permissions
    - Binned P/Shop prefs
    - Uninstalled and re-installed the whole of Creative Suite 1 (!!!)
    - Tried a new user account and the problem was the same.
    - I read about needing to put "Adobe Unit Types" File into a folder called "ScriptingAdditions" at HD/Library/ScriptingAdditions. (This was already there, but I tried an old version from an archived OS 10.4.4, and then downloaded a new version of it from the web and tried that).
    - Put this file in every library I could find on the Mac (that was out of desperation!).
    - Restarted about a billion times.
    - Checked Adobe.com for updates and help.
    - Added any available updates for CS1
-Trawled the web for hours looking for a solution.
    - Disconnected from the internet while opening a file (As Adobe suggested - like that it gonna do anything?!?!?)
    - run /sbin/fsck -uy at the command prompt after starting up in single user mode.
    - Torn my hair out
    - Sworn a lot.
    - Wondered why the **** I spent sooooo much money on Creative Suite!
-Resisted temptation to put foot through monitor
Frankly, I think I have done pretty much everything possible and am clean out of ideas - any thoughts anyone?
My info - OS 10.4.7, Photoshop CS1 (Part of Creative Suite CS1).
This has only happened since I installed OS update to 10.4.7
    Please help!
    Thanks
    Rob

I personally have found that sometimes it's harder to isolate things once I have been mucking about so much (and being so frustrated.) I have found that buying a firewire external drive and re-installing the OS fresh and creating one account and only installing that one app almost always works.
I can then limp along and migrate settings or file an honest bug report that states so simply that the only things there are Mac and Application X that it's easy to find a solution or get back to work.
Sorry it's probably not what you wanted to hear, but sometimes the sure bet is worth the added time and hardware. And you will then have a spare drive to use a tool like carbon copy cloner to make bootable backups every so often so when the inevitable strikes, you can keep working...

  • Go0gle toolbar is listed in VIEW and space opens but no toolbar appears

It disappeared spontaneously and, even though it is listed under VIEW and space opens it will not appear.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the ''Safe mode'' start window.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (on Mac: "Firefox > Quit")

  • Can't open apps in Time Machine

In June we had a great electrical storm, and my i.Mac fried. Lucky for me the Maxtor external drive was OK, so I was able to get a total backup on to my replacement iMac and I lost not one thing.(three cheers for "Time Machine").
So I then reformatted the Maxtor and hooked it up to the new iMac and turned on "Time Machine." Everything seemed to be working just fine until just recently I tried to open my Reunion genealogy program and all Time Machine would bring up was my desktop. Even when I tried to open it through Time Machine, applications, Reunion..still cant open it.
On investigation I have the same block on iTunes and iCal.(all I get is the desktop) while apps like address book and iphoto are in Time Machine just fine.......what is going on ?
Should I reformat the external drive and start again ?

I apologize for stressing the point, but, again, can I ask why you're trying to go through Time Machine to get to your Reunion files? From your first post, it sounded as though you recovered everything from your backup (presumably you used the "Recover from TM backup" option when you installed the new hard drive?)
Does Reunion run normally when you launch it from your Applications folder (forgetting about Time Machine for a minute)? If so, do you have your current Reunion data somewhere in your Documents folder (or wherever you stored it before?) If not, and you believe you still have Reunion files in your backups, you should quit Reunion itself, then go into the Finder, go to the Time Machine interface, and locate your data file. Not the Reunion application, the family data file. Then recover that from the backup.
Again, the reason you're seeing what you're seeing through Time Machine is that TM is not "aware" of most applications (ie, you can't just launch any app, go to TM and expect that app's data to appear in the interface). It works for Mail, Address Book, iPhoto and the Finder. It's the Finder you're experiencing when you're going back in Time Machine, not Reunion itself. You just happen to be looking at the Reunion icon when you do so.

  • ICal opens at random times with OSX Lion

Ever since upgrading to Lion, iCal seems to pop open at random times. Doesn't seem to be much of a pattern to it either. I use Calendar on my iPhone - it is synced with iCal via the iCloud beta, so potentially this has something to do with it.
Any ideas why this is happening - or, what log files might I be able to look at to see why it opens?

Thanks for the update much appreciated, it's funny out of curiosity i checked again to be sure of the system requirements for the new osx lion and reads as follows:
    System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
    ect.......
I'm running an intel core duo 2.4Ghz with  4G's (ram) which i implemented "just because" after a visit to at the ARS for a routine maintenace of my machine about a year ago, and it appears that  4G's are not even enough, apple has not even addressed this issue even though (thanks to your feed back) apparently is not only a coincidence for me, but infact is a real issue, with just a quick search other people with other even newer machines are encountering the same failures that mine has; anyhow, I will be implementing my 4G's to 8G's (ram) soon and will keep posted as well if the issue is to reveal again/persist even then, well to look at it in the bright side, the machine will run faster.
    Andrea.

  • A Copy of Firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time

I have shut down my mac for half a dozen times in response to the warning -- A Copy of Firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time -- that comes up each time I attempt to launch the browser. I have tried out the solutions suggested for previous users (on the Mozilla Forum) who were experiencing similar issues, but I can't even see Firefox on my Mac's Activity Monitor. What's going on?
I started experiencing this problem out of the blue on a networked computer two days ago (on Tuesday December 6). I have been using computers on this network for more than a year and it's only now that I have started experiencing this problem. Furthermore, I have been a Firefox user for more than four years and never encountered this issue. It's frustrating considering I have come to rely on Firefox as my browser of choice.
Other than this background I don't know what else to tell you by way of details.

    Hi Swarnava,
Thanks for your prompt response. Intriguingly, when I logged on to my Mac (it's on a university network) this morning and launched Firefox it opened without a problem. If the issue resurfaces, I will try out the solutions you posted. Judging from the experiences of users who successfully trouble-shot their issues, apparently, Madakkadam's solution would be most helpful.
    All the best.

  • "A copy of firefox is already open. Only one copy of firefox can be open at a time." What do I do?

I was installing Firefox 4.0.1 and something went wrong. Now every time I try to open Firefox, an error message that says "A copy of firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time." I've looked it up and every forum says something about a terminal.. and lock files.. Could somebody PLEASE break it down and explain it as if you were talking to a 2 year old? I am computer illiterate.

Maybe Firefox messages have been modified slightly. Please read the article
*[[Firefox is already running but is not responding]] <-- clickable link -- <br> (the illustrated articles will explain a lot better than I could)
The article explains how to find and stop the extra Firefox process that is causing problems. (You usually use Windows Task Manager to do this - if it is a Windows computer) There is a selection option on the help page with a + by it towards the top right, click that to change the help page details to match the operating system and version of Firefox you use.
If the problem keeps occurring it will be because Firefox has some files mixed up, for instance multiple copies of the files it uses to try to get Firefox to display the details of the last browsing session when you restart Firefox. You now need to follow the link from the above article to this one:
