HD space-uninstalling and re-installing your O.S.

ok so i know ive asked this question before
*MY HARD DRIVE :* 70GB
*I currently have:* 35GB
*i Currently have installed*: Traktor DJ studio, VUZE,some music,apple Loops,
Question: If i un installed my O.S. and resinstalled with my CD's would your HD make a back up file of that, and if so where would you find that at.Im trying to find out where all my HD space went. i read alot of what people told me to do in previous post.and heres what i did to look at what went where.....
1*)Empty the Trash* check did that
2)*Archive old file*- did not do yet but did move a 15gb folder to external HD
3)*Clean up system logs and temporary files*-I downloaded a third party app called cocktail and cleared casche and temp files
4*Remove unused localization file*,did not do that but its only 200mb
5)*Delete the Previous Systems folder from a prior Archive and Install*-not sure how to find this folder but i did delete my O.S. and had to reinstall it from cd,so do I have to delte this folder?and if so where is it
6)*Uninstall unused applications*- i deleted some programs that came with mac mini to save some space
7) I did download "what this" ,not to sure how to use it,but it can only look for file no bigger than 20GB.
also my buddy told me that even though i have 70 GB total ,he said just everything that makes my computer run will take that much ,,example: the O.S./APPS/updates/etc etc.. so if i bought a mac mini brand new with out installing anything would i still have something close to 70 gb or not..thanks

if you're on Leo, you get the option to do an *archive & install*. a folder called +previous system+ would be created on the top level of your HD. once you moved everything you need to the fresh system (documents, pictures, etc.), this folder can be safely deleted.
other than that, you will have to make backups of your startup disk yourself. get an external HD (USB or, better yet, firewire) and use e.g. Carbon Copy Cloner to regularly clone your internal drive to the external.

i got my mini roughly 2 months ago. the biggest non-Apple additions where *Office 2008* and *Toast 10*. my mini has used up about 50 gig HD space (i keep my iTunes library on an external drive), so 70 gigs can't be correct.
as for freeing up HD space, you might want to work yourself through these reads:
Your Mac needs adequate hard drive space to operate normally. How full can a drive be before it's too full? There is no hard and fast rule that says “X” amount or “%” of free drive space is needed. A low amount of RAM requires more drive space for Virtual Memory’s swap files.

Here’s some general guidelines for minimum hard drive free space:
1. As a general rule, your available space should be 5GB as an absolute minimum as it generally requires that much free space to perform an Archive and Install of Mac OS X and still preserve some free space for VM swap files.
2. Some say that your hard drive should have at least 5% of it's capacity available for use. Still others say 10% to 15%. If you routinely process complex graphics and videos, even more space is required.
With your 19.7GB of free space, you should be OK. Usually it's best to not state a percentage, but state an amount of free space. There's a big difference in having 10% free space (20GB) on a 200GB hard drive compared 10% (4GB) to a 40GB hard drive.

    Without proper system information and other details like what files you work with  nobody can tell you much. From corrupted prefs to issues with your PS swap file to actual problems with the fiel storage this could be anything.

  • How do you uninstall and re-install on the same computer and keep all of your 'stuff'?

    My TBird has gotten a little wonky and despite the best efforts of your support forum, it appears it is gonna stay 'wonky'.
    Therefore, I would like to uninstall and re-install it and see if that solves the problem, but, of course, I would like to somehow export my messages/folders and address books.
    I used an add-on called IMPORTEXPORTTOOLS to export my folders It gives you various options though and I didn't know the best one to choose.
    Also, I couldn't figure out how to export my address book. I exported all of this to an Email product called CLAWS (which I can't even get to work...lol). However, if worse comes to worse, I can perhaps import them from the CLAWS client.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    ImportExportTools is good for saving/backup of your mail. For what you want, probably the zipped folders would be the easiest. You can export your address book(s) to a file (use LDIF; it's much easier to import later).
    However, these are only pieces of the profile. With TB NOT running, you can copy your entire profile to another location/medium just by doing a file copy. Look at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-tb#w_how-to-find-your-profile I copy mine to a USB memory.
    When you uninstall and reinstall TB, you will not be changing your profile! So if you want a really clean start, see https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/using-multiple-profiles to create a new/clean profile. Don't delete your old one; you may need parts of it.
    If things are still 'wonky' after a new start, let me know.

  • HT201363 I am receiving an authentication request at launch on my desktop. I am unable to satisfy the password and then it freezes. Uninstalled and re-installed yesterday and have same issue. I think it is a podcast feed, but cannot delete

    I am locked out of my Itunes. When I launch on the desktop I receive an authentication request from www.podshow.com that I cannot satisfy with password. Actually i don't ever remember giving them a password. When I cannot satisfy the password it locks up my screen. When I went to the website listed I could not satisfy the password to even get onto the site. I am pretty sure it is a feed, how can I delete it and get back into my itunes?     For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
    Start with the section Install missing components which should address your particular error. Otherwise the steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
    Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
    If you've already tried a complete uninstall and reinstall try opening iTunes in safe mode (hold down CTRL+SHIFT) as you start iTunes, then going to Edit > Preferences > Store and turning off Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases. You may find iTunes will now start normally.

    Open iPhoto, select a couple of photos and use the Share ➙ iWeb ➙ Photo page menu option.  That has jump started iWeb for others.  I could take a couple of tries.
    If that doesn't work try the following:
    1 - delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iiWeb.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
    2 - delete iWeb's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder.

    Note that, as it says in those articles:
    iTunes Store purchases or songs imported from CDs are saved in your My Music folder by default and are not deleted by removing iTunes. While it is highly unlikely that you will lose any contents of your iTunes Library when following these steps, it is always a good idea to ensure that your iTunes library is backed up. If you're unsure how to backup, see iTunes: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive.

    To Reset Firefox do the following:
    #Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
    #Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
    #Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
    #Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

    I have 7 users running single licenses of Adobe Acrobat X Standard and 5 users running a multi license version of Adobe Acrobat X Pro. between Wed 14/01/15 and Thursday 15/01/15 all of these products stopped working on all machines. All machines are windows 7 machines. They are throwing up
    "Configuration Error"
    Please uninstall and re-install this product.
    Error code 6.
    It then closes the program
    When i run this product as an administrator the error message still appears but it allows the program to run. When i then close the program it does not close to process so the next time i open adobe it gives me the error message that the product is not licensed. I assume this is due to the product running in 2 instances.
    I have tried:
    un-installing the product,
    i have currently set all my users to local admins to have a work around.
    I have used the adobe clean up tool and removed everything i can think of to do with adobe.
    I have re-registered the products
    I have edited to permission and followed the guide for Error Code 16 as it was a similar problem.
    None of the above has worked so far.
    This is now a matter of urgency and any help would be appreciated.
