HD to Pal SD 16:9 DVD issues

Hi all,
I have searched the forums for days and can’t find the best solution; I’m having trouble creating a Good PAL 16:9 SD DVD from a HD Source. The issues I’m having is the DVD looks washed out and very soft, also the graphics look bad with lines through them like they are not resolved properly.
I have being making DVD’s with compressor for about 5 years and I would be happy if I could get the same quality as when we used to shoot in DV.
Below is my process:
Shoot
Sony EX3 Camera 1920x1080i50,
Edit Timeline
1920x1080i
Prores 422,
Pixel aspect ratio: Square pixels
Field dominance: Upper
I have tried all solutions on the forums such as turning on Frame control(combination of different setting), down converting in FCP first, down converting in Compressor first, tried CB instead of VBR.
After days of testing, the best result I have had so far is to out put HD from fcp then get MPEG Streamclip to do the down convert then use compressor to make the DVD. This fixes the problem with the titles but not the soft focus issue.
Also I’m checking these DVD’s on a full def Sony LCD and SD CRT. It does look better on the SD CRT but most of my clients have LCD’s.
One thought I had is that my original footage uses square pixels but compressor changes it to 0.7031 Pal 601(16:9) I’m not sure what affect this is having on the quality of the DVD?
I'm using FCP 7.02 and Compressor 3.5.2
I would appreciate any help.(Plus I can’t wait til my clients get Blu-ray!)

I've been having similar problems, and it appears as if us in PAL world seem to get hit harder with this, leading me to think that the problem is in the Upper Field Dominance of HD being sloppily converted to Lower Field Dominance of PAL DVD. Those in NTSC world start in upper and finish in upper field dominance.
For the record, I'm using HDV 1080i 50 footage from our Z5's recording to flash card, ingested using Log and Transfer (with the Sony memory unit plug for FCP installed).
Many people have put forward their suggestions for HD to DVD workflow. Almost all of them are from the US and don't have to worry about moving from one format to another with different field dominance. No one has been able to tell me where the change takes place... they just know it happens somehow. If you are going from FCP to Compressor to DVD SP, I think DVD SP is changing the dominance as it preps for PAL DVD. I don't know how hard the conversion is, but I don't like the idea of DVD SP doing it.
I tried changing Compressor's settings to output in lower field dominance, btu all I got was unwatchable flicker.
I tried a demo version of BitVice and it yielded the same results as Compressor (just poor quality when field dominance set to "Same as source" and unwatchable flicker when set to lower). This adds weight to my theory that the problem is in the field dominance conversion which I think is being done by DVD SP. Maybe if an expert on this field dominance can confirm or rule out my theory, I can move past this bump in the road.
Has anyone tried moving projects over to the Adove suite and outputted via Encore?
Cheers

  • So I converted NTSC to PAL using nattress, but DVD issue now. Please read

So with Shanes help last night I managed to make the .mov PAL formatted. Now I went into DVD Studio Pro made my menus made sure it was PAL ready and started the burn process.
Yet it failed and the reason that DVD said is " Final PAL (Video):Invalid Video Asset"
Can anyone help me burn a proper PAL DVD?
    Thanks

You might post at the DVDSP forum, too, but please return here if you get a helpful answer and close the thread.
I've never tried to do PAL, sorry, but I do know that DVDSP must be set up to work in PAL before you can use PAL assets. That, of course, is all in the manual.
    Hope you get better advice.

  • Toshiba Satellite L3** CD/DVD issue !!! Here is my solution. How about you?

Hello everyone. Nowadays, I see on this forum people are discussing about the CD/DVD issues on L30/L300/L350. I would like to share my experience on this issue and hope everyone shares your experience as well.
My laptop are Toshiba L30 PSL33 and Toshiba L300 PSLB2E. I am lucky that I have no problem with CD/DVD discs/drives as I can read/write/play CD/DVD smoothly. However, I used to have some problems with CD/DVD drive on my notebook. Here is my experience.
    1) Make sure there is no other CD/DVD softwares on your computer (except the orginal software from Toshiba). Especially to those who have been used to using Nero. If you have problems, try to remove Nero and test with the one supported by Windows
    2) If you still have problems, try to update the firmware of the DVD drive. It can be done by visiting the Toshiba Support Driver site (http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/). Check what drive you have by looking at the Device Manager. Download the newest firmware from there and update your drive.
    3) My last solution. If you have Vista pre-installed, try to get a XP version on your computer and do not install any other software. Test/copy a CD by using windows writing tool to see whether the problem is solved or not.
In my opinion. the main reasons you may encournter are: there are CD/DVD drives have XP firmware base and need to be updated so that they can be used in Vista; or there are software like Nero and PowerDVD are causing the conflict between the ACPI controllers (real and simulated).
Hope this may help you all. If you have other experiences, please share with everyone.
PS: Please excuse my language as I am not an English speaker.

  • New External DVD Issues

New Computer:  HP Envy m6 Notebook PC
New External DVD Drive:  LG SP60
    System:  Windows 8
Issue:  I place a DVD movie into external drive and there is no "auto play" function and no queue for me to start or play the DVD movie.
I have properly installed the external drive.  I have used the drive to install other items including my printer.  So it is not a mechanical or core function issue with the drive.
I was "forced" to download Cyberlink Media Suite; however, there is no button or queue to click to watch the DVD in the drive.  All items are related to burning a DVD.
I have tried several other DVDs that are in excellent condition on a totally separate device.  So I know it is not a DVD issue.
In the "my computer" it shows that there is a movie but it also shows that there are 3 main files, all with additional subfiles.  None look like they are "clickable" to play the movie.
I am searching for a simple one to two click process to play a DVD--not a process that requires several subscreen maneuvers.
Windows Media Player does not recognize the DVD movie either.
    Help please . . . .

    Hi,
I would not allow external USB devices to run Auto Play because virus can come in to play. For Windows 8, WMP is not a good product to play DVD. The DVD Player on CyberLink suite should play DVD's for you. You can also use a free product called vlc, which can play nearly all video formats.

  • PAL DVD Issues

I'm not sure if this question is for this forum but I'll give it a shot.
My original FCP Project was an PAL HDV Project. Once I finished editing, I put the sequence in a DV PAL sequence, rendered it and outputted as a FCP file. I put that file in compressor to make a m2v PAL file. I took the file into DVD SP as a PAL project and burned it as a SD DVD on the G5.
The DVD tested fine on a several DVD players.
My problem is that I sent the DVD to Europe and they are experiencing major 'strobing' issues. I know there is some jitterness with HDV on motion scenes, but they are seeing constant strobing on their PAL DVD players. Am I doing something wrong. I took the DVD to a post house in Los Angeles, and it plays fine in their PAL systems. It actually play fine in my NTSC DVD player as well.
There isn't much motion in the film, mostly interviews.
Any clues of why this would happen?

It was originally shot in PAL 1080i50 on a Sony Zu1. I am assuming that is true PAL.
I made a DV PAL sequence first because the rendering time and conversion time to m2v files is much less.
Is the DVD burner that are installed on G5's capable of burning true PAL DVD's? I have one of the original G5's.

  • Workflow PAL equipment to NTSC DVD

I want to shoot and edit with PAL gear, but I'd like to create an extra NTSC DVD too.
    A. How is that done nowadays in a pro situation, when you could rent or buy whatever you need? What is the ideal source material for dual norm output (PAL & NTSC)
    B. What can I do, using just some PAL camera's (maybe HD, maybe SD only) and a HD edit set?
    >> Time is not an issue: if I have to render a week for the best PAL to NTSC conversion, no problem. I was thinking After Effects and pixel blending...
    >> Please do not reply from hearsay; hands-on pro experience only.

I have tried a number of software methods and none of them are as good as a Alchemist  hardware convertor. I send my master PAL tape to a Soho facilities house for conversion. About £275 for 2 hours of material.

  • PAL (25p) - 24p - NTSC DVD

I have two CanonXL1e (PAL) cameras. I am planning to shoot footage at 25p and conform the clips to 23.98fps, edit in FCP on 23.98fps sequences, and then output to NTSC DVDs at 23.98fps.
The audio gets out of sync when I conform the 25p clips to 23.98fps and drop them into a 23.98fps sequence.
The audio stays in sync with the video when I conform the 25p clips to 24fps and drop them into a 24fps sequence. The problem I have with this setup is when I export the 24fps sequence from FCP to Mpeg2 using compressor I seem to drop a frame every once in a while. Is this because it's going from 24fps to 23.98 fps?
What is the correct workflow to get from PAL 25p to 24p to NTSC DVD?

I have not - but instead of conforming to 24, does cinema tools give you the option to conform to 23.98? If not, I'd have to think it's like Dropframe/Non-Dropframe sync issues - stuff drops out at the rate of 2 frames per minute. Not noticeable in the first minute, but definitely discernible after 3.
I don't know of any option other than to run the audio at 99.9% or slipping the audio every minute...
    Or is that 100.1%?

  • PAL to NTSC Audio Sync Issues

    Hi All,
I've searched through the forums and have found some similar issues but nothing exactly like this.
I am editing a music concert that was shot in PAL. The audio was also recorded separately and has been edited and mixed in ProTools.
When I take the exported audio and put it into my PAL timeline, it drifts out of sync with the video as expected. My questions are:
    1) How should the audio be exported to match up to my PAL timeline?
    2) When we convert to NTSC, I will use the Nattress filters for video, but what do i need to be concerned about re: the audio?
    Thanks big time,
    Jason

Here's what I don't understand - some guys captured this concert in two ways - a PAL camera (and associated audio) and then some sort of audio recording, a believe a DAT.
They gave us PAL tapes which we have captured, and then ProTools audio files. Theoretically everything should match up at this point (the audio from the cameras and the audio from the recorder should be the same, right?)...
Why would it be that after changing the MIXES (but not shortening or lengthening the audio), exporting from ProTools, and then laying them into the FCP track (syncing up to the first beat of a song, etc), they audio drifts? Not bad, about 1 1/2 seconds in 6 1/2 min of footage.. but nonetheless, this is a HUGE pain.
Given this is a music DVD and the artist is a major musical stickler, changing the audio has a ZERO percent chance of being acceptable...
Thanks again for your help -
    Jason

  • Satellite P200-1EE: HD-DVD issue: Unable to output video to external device

I know this subject has been brought up before but after searching the web on and off for months now I still can't find a solution that works for me.
The problem occurs when trying to use the Toshiba HD-DVD Player to play HD-DVD discs. The program starts but after reading the disc it displays the message +"Unable to output the video to an external device. Please check the external output setting after ending the application."+ and will not play the movie. I'm not sure when this problem first started happening as I went a couple of months without using the HD-DVD feature but I know my laptop was capable of playing the DVD's on both the laptop's display and through the HDMI cable when I first got it just under a year ago.
Toshiba's website mentions this problem and suggests updating the Realtek Audio drivers but I've updated several times now and there has been no change. I've also updated the HD-DVD Player software, also to no avail. The problem is the same regardless of how I try to output the video and occurs on any HD-DVD disc.
I've read that PowerDVD may be a better choice for playing HD-DVD's but I'm rather reluctant to spend the money when it might not work so unless someone can guarantee this as a solution I don't think I'll be trying it.
If anyone could suggest a solution that I haven't yet tried I'd be very grateful.

    >The program starts but after reading the disc it displays the message "Unable to output the video to an external device. Please check the external output setting after ending the application." and will not play the movie.
Today is your lucky day mate ;) I found a solution!
    Here in this thread you can find a link to a Toshiba doc which describes what is going wrong and what you have to do to solve this annoying issue;
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=114726&#114726
It looks like the new sound driver installation will help you to solve this HD-DVD playback problem.
    Check it out.

  • Anyone know Disk Utility, Ignore Ownership, and disk image DL DVD issues?

I am currently having issues with backup DVD's I burned using Disk Utility. I can put the dual layer DVD's in and the system reads them. When I try to pull a file off the Dual Layer DVD a circle with an X appears notifying me that I cannot copy the files to my desk top.
When I check the DVD's permissions it reads Admin (me) read and write with the ignore ownership checkbox checked...which means I should be able to pull files off the DVD. The only way I can currently get information off the DVD is to duplicate the entire disk to a new folder by selecting the DVD while holding down the Cntrl key and selecting duplicate. I have had other issues with DVD's and disk images in Leopard....including having to eject either through disk utility or by selecting the image with the Cntrl key held down. Finder eject, keyboard eject, and the menu eject selections suddenly report that the disk is in use.
The DVD's were burned by creating a dual layer dvd image through disk utility with the read/write option checked.
After duplicating 2-3 disks, the system itself is unable to mount any more disks from the series of backups. When I look at disk utility it reads that the disk is not mountable. I have to restart my computer so the system can continue to read the backups.
My Itunes disk backups are marked the same way (ignore ownership) with admin read/write privlages....I have no problem pulling files off these disks.
I have tried both logging in as root and booting from an external drive...same problem. Is this some nasty Disk Utility bug? Is anyone else having bizarre permission related issues with Disk Utility and Disk Images.

When you create the image in Disk Utility, did you
    change the 'Partitions' setting?
If you leave it to read 'CD/DVD', it will create a ISO9660/UDF image.
To be able to maintain permission and extended file attributes, you
need to select 'GUID Partition Map'.
I assume you used iTunes to create your music backup?
It seems it creates the correct image type for you.
Before sending this message, I actually created a single layer image,
copied some files to it and gave additional permissions to other users on my system.
Afterwards I copied the files to my Desktop, verifying that the attributes are still intact.
    Best regards
(It took quite a while to burn this 4x DVD-RW Anyways, I hope I could help)

  • Burned DVD issues in DVD player not reading or music issues stop and start

I'm a PC converted to a MAC (less than a month) and love it so far. I have been able to create and burn a DVD. The problem I'm having is one DVD player will not read the DVD (Hitachi). The other DVD player will play it, but the music stops and starts when it transitions (twirl) to another picture (Panasonic DVD/VHS combo). I'm using a DVD R Memorex. Neither one of the player are new. Would love to use this to make the Grandparent's a DVD of the grandchildren from birth to present as Christmas present. What do I need to use or do to be able to watch on any DVD player as well as the computers?

    Hi me01
Welcome to apple discussions. Try using 99 photos / less to avoid issues with audio fades / drops. Also do a search for Memorex on this forum and you'll see it's not the first choice of dvd's for most users. Instead try Verbatim, Maxell, or Taiyo Yuden and burn at 4x from a disc image for best results. Wish you luck and feel free to post back with results or any further questions.

  • Pro training DVD issue

just installed the whole fcp 2 on my imac and was hoping to start playing around with color. i have the peachpit pro training series book, but whenever i try to open the very first final cut file to send the clips to color i get this message 'file's format is too new for this version of the application' i've installed all the avaliable software updates. has anyone had this problem with the dvd?

    A) As Joe said.....
    a) Good luck with Leopard.
I could say it's a Leopard thing but what else have you done to trouble shoot this? If you search around the FCP forum, you'll see a host of postings regarding the error message you're getting. You may want to trash your Final Cut preferences to start. Don't ask me how to do that, far more patient souls than I have posted the entire procedure on the FCP board, do a search.
You could also try a permissions repair and even though you don't have any firewire issues, this could be the time for the Guinness Solution (search the FCP forum for that as well). It won't help your error message at all but it will put you in a better frame of mind.
    Good luck.

  • Mac Mini DVD issues with 3rd party player software

New to the forum. I have a Late 2012 Mac Mini with 16GB RAM and 256 SSD (Crucial) fitted and the latest version Yosemite OS. I get a slight jerkiness when playing DVDs from an external Panasonic UJ265 USB3 Blu-ray drive using either Aurora or Macgo software, however Blu-rays play fine and the jerkiness disappears with Apple's native DVD player. Any ideas what might be going on? Many thanks.

I'm having a similar issue as well with my Mac Mini (Macmini 4,1) connected to an HP LP3065 via the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adaptor. I also have a Dell 2407WFP connected via the the HDMI->DVI connector:
    Summary:
When the Mac Mini wakes from sleep, the display for the Dual-Link DVI connection is set to the wrong resolution and cannot be modified in System preferences.
    Details:
In my case, this manifests as a blank screen and flashing green power led on the HP, which is how the it indicates the display resolution is set to something other than 2560x1600. The Dell still wakes up, but is now in Mirroring mode. At this point, Displays system preference shows a generic "Display" with a resolution of "640x480", plus the HP2407, with no option to change the resolution for the generic Display)
The only thing that seems to fix the problem is restarting the Mac Mini.
This seems to happen about 30% of the time the Mac Mini wakes from sleep. The rest of the time, everything works fine. It's extremely annoying.

  • Rescue attempt of iMac via MBP.  DVD issues

I am trying to rescue my dead iMac using an install DVD and my MacBookPro. Long story short; the iMac died a while back and will only boot in Target Disk mode. I have backed up the iMac to an HDD, so I have the data saved. I am trying to mount the iMac via Target Disk mode on the MacBook Pro, insert the install DVD, and then do an erase/install on the iMac hard disk. It does not work.
I have tried doing this with the DVD in both the iMac and the MBP, but each time I allow the installer to restart the MBP all I end up with is a pale blue screen on the MBP, and the Target Disk logo on the iMac. I sat and watched this for about 10 minutes, but there was no change. It does this regardless of which computer the DVD is in.
What am I missing? How can I use my MBP to rescue my iMac?
You can find background details (if you need them) in my previous posts on the initial recovery attempts on the iMac.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2525930&tstart=0

    Hi Sasane
Using a wired keyboard, pop the original install DVD for that iMac into the DVD drive and start it up holding the Option key and see if it will boot into the Startup Manager. In the Startup Manager normally you will see both the Internal HD and the DVD with an arrow below them, in your case in the Internal has failed you may only see the DVD. In any case if you select the DVD the iMac should startup from the DVD. Once you are booted from the DVD, skip the Installer and go up on the menu bar and select Utilities > Disk Utility. If at this point you can select the Macintosh HD, select Repair Disk. If you can not see or select the Internal HD or the Macintosh HD, then the Internal HD has failed and needs to be replaced.
If I have lost you or you still can not see the Internal HD, then do a JGG suggested in your other thread and run the Apple Hardware Test. Again using a wired keyboard and the proper install DVD +(as per the following article)+ and run the Apple Hardware Test. > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
If the Repair attempts fail, the HD appear's to be missing and/or the Hardware Test will not run, then the iMac needs to go in for service.
