HD to SD-DVD Speed

I have a show that lenght about 2 hour and 20 minutes
I shot in HD format and now i want to export it into SD-DVD
Here is the Problem i have to face, i use File > Export using Compressor, using Setting: "DVD: Best Quality 150 mins -16:9"
Using Default Setting, and it took me 72Hours to convert!!
Is it normal?
Powerbook 15" SD   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   Self Upgrade to 2GB Ram

I guess the time is due to Compressor doing its "optical flow" gimmicks. You might try converting your material in Quicktime to DVD resolution - preferably to some lossless format .mov - or a virtual clip (or whatever the correct term for those were), if short of disc space. Then, Compress the resulting .mov. If your source is interlaced, you could take just one field to make a progressive DVD and if the source is progressive, just scale it. To save additional time, set motion estimation quality to something lower than best in Compressor.

  • DVD Speeds - can I play slower recorded DVDs - Satellite P20-801

I've got a Satellite P20-801. I'm thinking about buying a DVD Recorder so I can transfer VHS material onto DVD. If I recorded it at a slower speed, would I be able to play it on my laptop? How can I find out if the DVD player on the P20 can play different speeds - assuming it's possible?
    Thanks.

    Hi
As far as I know the recording speed is not relevant for playing. You can record DVD on minimum or maximum speed and the DVD can be played on your P20. My previous notebook was P20 and I have never had any problem about that.

  • Dvdsp authored dvd really quiet in a Mac only - fine in set-top and pc

i've gotten a test dvd back from the replicator and there's a strange thing happening with the audio: in a set-top player and a PC the audio on the disc is fine; when played in a Mac - I've tried 3 different machines - the audio is so low it's barely audible.  Anyone have this problem in the past or have any suggestions?

I've edited in FCP and exported with compressor with all the appropriate settings, to mpeg 2.
Double check to make sure that you edited in Anamorphic and also encoded as 16:9 video not 4:3 - also make sure you set the Track to 16:9 Letterbox in DVD SP.
What encoding rates did you use for the video and audio? Sometimes if the rates are too high it can cause drifts.
On the audio side, did you export the FCP as self contained and make the audio AC3? Also you can try just exporting the audio as an AIF and encode that as an AC3.
How did you burn the DVD (Speed and Media used?) Sometimes bad burns/media can cause issues.

  • How to shrink a long MPEG2 to fit on a DVD?

I have a long (5.7GB) MPEG2 file that I'd like to burn to a 4.7GB DVD. I'm a total ignoramus w.r.t. multimedia processing on Linux - how can I do that? Note that the running time on the movie is only about 1:15.
And in case you're wondering, the movie is "My Man Godfrey" from the wonderful public domain media site http://www.archive.org/details/movies.
    Thanks.

A couple of thoughts (or what I'd do)
install mplayer, ffmpeg and build tovid in aur.
Then I'd go back and grab the mpeg4 from archive.org of your movie.
    at a command prompt do:
tovid -dvd -in my_man_godfrey.avi -out My_Man_Godfrey
you get a mpg2 ready to turn into a DVD (eventually)
makexml -dvd -in My_Man_Godfrey.mpg -out MyManGodfrey
you get an xml file for the next step which creates a burnable ISO
    makedvd MyManGodfrey.xml
    or
    makedvd -burn -device /dev/dvd -speed 4 MyManGodfrey.xml
    to burn it.
Or try this and see if it shrinks any (probably not)
    ffmpeg -i my_man_godfrey.mpeg -target ntsc-dvd test.mpg
    If works can rename
I'm downloading the mpeg2 and may have other ideas after it finishes.  The file size is way off for a about a movie of that length.
    Good luck

  • DVD DR8-A2

Hi I’m having a problem with my DVD burner
    My pc is
    Athlon 64 3200+
    Msi k8t neo
    Xp pro
    SP2
I purchased an msi dr8-a2 DVD burner and I have 2 problems with it. first all DVD’s it makes at some point when playing the movie back lock up (The picture freezes). The second problem is the speed the DVD burns at it will burn at 2.4*.
    Things I have tried
I went in to device manager and it called the drive an  ATAPI  DVD  RW  8*MAX
I double clicked on it to give me properties then went in to details and is said
    IDE\CDROMATAPI_DVD_RW_8*MAX_____________150D___\5&211F198B&0&0.0.0
I THEN WENT ON TO MSI WEB SITE TO DOWNLOAD THE LATEST FIRMWARE
Went in to download optical storage
    Then optical storage firmware
    Then DVD Duel drive firmware
Looked down the list until I found the DR8-A2 then downloaded the file called DR8A2_150D
Then made a boot floppy and put the files in and restarted the pc the pc booted from the floppy and run the software.
Executed dvflash_scr.bin  it gave me 2 choices  1) dvd rw  2) cdrw  so I went with choice 1 DVD.
IT THEN TOLD ME “THIS FILE IS NOT SUPPORT FOR DEVICE”
SO I HAVE AN MSI DVD RW (DR8_A2) I GO TO THE MSI WEB SITE DOWNLOAD THE DR8_A2 SOFTWARE AND I GET BACK AN ERROR THIS IS NOT SUPPORT FOR DEVICE.
SO WHAT IS IT WHEN I’M SURE I DON’T KNOW
    Helppppppp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi there
both your problems are likely to depend on the media you used. Depending on the DVD brand you may have a different DVD speed and a DVD8x will be sometimes burnt at 4x or 2.4X. This is not that bad, expecially if you have an old DVD player, which may not accept DVds burnt at the highest speed.
Concerning the picture freeze you noticed, well, sometimes it happens when you didn't remove properly the dvd "protections"...
And pay attention to the firmware upgrade, it's somewhat risky.
    Ciao

  • Mac won't play Humax DVDs

We have two emacs, an upgraded G4 and a Humax/Tivo DVDR. When we burn a DVD on the Humax, it plays in every other DVD player in the house, but will only play for five minutes in the Macs before it freezes the machine. Force quit is the only remedy.
    Why? Is there a workaround?
G4 1.2Ghz   Mac OS X (10.3.5)   System limited by audio hardware: Digidesign 001

It appears that you do have a speed choice as per Humax's recorders.
Choice of recording modes : from 6 hours to 1 hour high quality recording
    Multi-function disc types for playback
Highly compatible : Playback recorded discs on MOST DVD players
DVD+RW recording format : Proven DVD recording technology for reliability and compatibility.
    Single Layer(4.7GB) write speeds
    1x (CLV) = about 58 minutes
    2x (CLV) = about 29 minutes
    2.4x (CLV) = about 24 minutes
    4x (CLV) = about 14.5 minutes
    6x (CLV/ZCLV) = about 10-12 minutes
    8x (PCAV/ZCLV) = about 8-10 minutes
    12x (PCAV/ZCLV) = about 6.5-7.5 minutes
    16x (CAV/ZCLV) = about 6-7 minutes
    Dual/Double Layer(8.5GB) write speeds
    1x CLV = about 105 minutes
    2.4x CLV = about 44 minutes
    4x CLV = about 27 minutes
    Single Layer (4.7GB) read speeds
    1x read speed is 1.321MB/s = ~56 minutes
    6x CAV (avg. ~4x) read speed is max 7.93MB/s = ~14 minutes
    8x CAV (avg. ~6x) read speed is max 10.57MB/s = ~10 minutes
    12x CAV (avg. ~8x) read speed is max 15.85MB/s = ~7 minutes
    16x CAV (avg. ~12x) read speed is max 21.13MB/s = ~5 minutes
    * write speed time and read speed time is not the same because writing requires some extra steps and also does the faster writing above 6x usually use lower write speeds for some parts of the dvd. 4x DVD speed = 36x CD speed. See section 4.2 in the DVDDemystified FAQ here.

  • Adobe Encore DVD Quality

    HELP PLEASE!
My friend and I, we do weddings, he as the photographer and am the videographer.
I edit in Adobe Premiere Pro CC and once the video is ready i exported as MPEG2 or H264, Lately I've been using MPEG2 cuz i make a DVD Menu in Adobe Encore CS6
Once i finish the Menu in Photoshop i imported into Encore and i tried so many presets and mothods to have at least 90% of the quality but the dvd menu still low quality.
    Tried DVD MPEG2, Blu-Ray MEPG2, Blu-Ray MP4 but nothing
I burn in Dual Layer DVD
    and 4.7 Gb DVD
    Speed 1x
    Side: One
Layer Break: Automatic ( I don't know what this it )
    Regions : All
    I will attached 2 pics.
In full screen the project burned it looks fatal.
    LOW QUALITY
    HIGH QUALITY

    Thanks for your tips John
I edit my menu in  DVD MPEG2 but still look terrible I'm not pretty sure if the dvd are bad quality or something else.
I edit my videos in 1920x480 24fps once i export my video  in mpeg2-dvd i have low quality cuz transcode form 1 format to another
so Basically in your experience what would be the best option to edit videos, export them and make the dvd for weddings

  • MBP Optical Drive Speeds...

I have a MacBook Pro 2.33GHz (Core2) with a HL-DT-ST-DVDRW GWA4080MA (AE38). I've been noticing that this drive is pretty **** slow. Since I couldn't find benchmarking programs for Mac, I ran Nero CD/DVD speed tests in Windows XP (BootCamp).
    CD Read = 8x
    DVD Read = 1.1x
CD Burn (using different brand discs at 40x and 52x) = 8x (to start, but slowed down as it progressed)
I am an Apple fan, but for $2500, I should not have an optical drive that's only slightly faster than my iBook from 2001. What gives?

Interestingly enough, tried another 52x using Toast rather than the finder. It had me at 10x, eventually going to 11x, eventually jumping to 20x, and then flip-flopped from 20x to 21x for the remainder of the 700mb burn. Really. Is this normal? Am I seeing a normal 24x Superdrive (CD-R) at work here? My PowerMac G5's burner seems faster and it, too, is rated at 24x.
Pretty soon, I'll be racing my MBP against another MBP of the same model and see what's up.

  • Burned DVD works fine in a mac but audio out of sync in a DVD player!?

The titles kinda says it all. Nearly. I've made my most complicated (for me) DVD to date. It's a concert DVD shot in anamorphic. I've edited in FCP and exported with compressor with all the appropriate settings, to mpeg 2. I've built the DVD in DVDSP with an intro from motion, motion menus etc. It previews fine and looks outstanding (if I do say so myself!). I burned the finished folder with Toast 8 ( as a UDF) and the burned DVD plays under DVD player on all my macs faultlessly. When I put the DVD in a normal DVD player, the audio is SERIOUSLY out of sync (the dancing is out of time let alone the lip sync) and the picture is stretched wide, like it's trying for 2.35.1 when it's only 16.9 or something.
Can anyone offer any suggestions? All help appreciated.
    Gareth

  • Burned a DVD in MBP unreadable in MacBook

    Hi,
I burned a Data-DVD using Toast 7 in my MacBook Pro. Then I tried to read the data into a MacMini without success. The DVD works fine ONLY on my MBP.
I had to transfer the files using a firewire cable.
I suspect that maybe the DVD drives are calibrated differently. Has anybody had this problem ?
    Thank you,
    Arturo.
    MBP 2.0 Mac OS 10.4.8 Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I had a similar problem with DVD burned on my MPB reading on my G5 and G4 Laptop. Turns out that it was the media I was using. The MBPC2D DVD drive supports 16x DVDs but my other machines on support 2x DVDs. Once I switched back to the 2x I was cool. Check the DVD speed on your mini.

  • Problem with burned DVD on DR8-A

    Hi everybody,
    I have a strange problem.
If you could help me it will be great.
I burned a Memorex 8x DVD+R on my DR8-A at 4x speed. This works fine.
So after i look my DVD in Windows Explorer and it shows me the all the files ( i have twenty video files of 200 MO each) of my burned DVD. But i can only access to the 10 first ones. I see the others but i can't copy them to hardrive, i can't  launch them with Windows Media Player (they are movie files).
    My PC configuration is :
    ASUS A7V8X
    AMD Athlon XP 2400+
    512 MB RAM
    80 GB MAXTOR DiamondMax Plus 9 7200rpm IDE, 8Mb
    120 GB MAXTOR DiamondMax Plus 9 7200rpm IDE, 8Mb
    Leadtek Winfast A280 LTD
    MEMOREX 16x DVD player
    MSI DRA-8 DVD writer.
    Windows 98 SE

You can use Nero CD-DVD Speed Utility to check if you have the disc burnt properly.

  • Is there a DVD-R/DVD R brand that works best?

I have never burned a DVD on my Macbookpro.  Is there a brand or type that works best.  I'll be placing my pictures on this DVD.

    valerifromwa wrote:

A question which cannot be answered.
Here's why. Optical discs are manufactured at only a handful of facilities around the world. But, when they are sold, they are retailed under many different brand names. There does not need to be any connection between the brand name on the label and the facility where they were manufactured, or the quality of the materials used. Two discs manufactured in the same place on the same day may be sold under completely different brand names; two discs bearing the same brand name may come from completely different places; and these places may differ depending on the market.
Here's a specific example. Verbatim (owned by Mitsubishi Chemicals) is usually regarded as a reputable brand. I purchased a batch of Verbatim DVDs last year in Toronto, Canada; they were made by Moser Baer in India; they worked reasonably well. Late last year, I bought another batch of Verbatim DVDs, this time in Shanghai, China. They were manufactured by CMC Magnetics (a Taiwan-based corporation) at their facility on the mainland. The failure rate on the Matsushita UJ-898 drive in my MBP has been >40%.
So, in practice, sample what's available to you, either locally or on-line, test on your MBP, then stick with what gives you best results. I usually test my optical disks with Nero CD-DVD Speed on a PC; unfortunately, I don't know of an equivalent tool which runs under Mac OS X.

  • DVD Surface Scan Software

This is the second year I've used DVDSP4 to author DVD's of my wife's studio dance recital. I got the final DVD's back yesterday and started checking them in one of our DVD players at home. Two of the seven I tried were ususable. They would start playing but pause and display a disc read error message. I called the duplication shop and they said if I bring in the discs I think are bad, they can check them and will replace them if they indeed are bad.
Is there software I can download to do a surface scan on these discs? I did a google search but all I can find is software for PC's such as Nero CD-DVD speed. Thanks in advance.

Before you go worrying about the surface of the media, think about how you built the disc...
What was the bitrate for the video?
What format of audio did you use?
    How full were the discs?
Now, if your bitrate was below 7.4Mbps, and the audio was all AC3 at 192kbps, then I'd start looking at the media, but only after checking the bitrate with a tool like Mpressionist (www.digigami.com). If you encoded with Compressor there is a chance that you got a bitrate spike in the encode which will make the disc unplayable.
Finally, the duplication house will have simply copied your DVD-R, bit for bit. I would look there first to make doubly sure your disc is good.
Then I'd be thinking about the media after that! If you are sure all of your work is well within the boundaries, and that your master was fine, then ask the duplicator to use one of your own branded discs to create a copy. If that works, then it is almost certainly the media they have used!
Or, you could just ask them to replace the discs...

  • 24p Video Speeds Up?

    Greetings:
I've imported video shot in 24p into iMovie HD 6 and noticed that, during playback, it sped up just a tad. The preference is set to 25p, however does it affect my 24p clip that much?
    Thanks!

iMovie isn't designed to handle 24p. The closest you get is PAL, which is 25 fps. That means your footage is sped up about 4%. That shouldn't be a problem, right?
If it is, you should but FCE or FCP, but the learning curve is steep. Also, check the specs as FCE didn't do 24p a couple of year ago when I last checked.
FYI: "Hollywood" movies are filmed at 24 fps. When these are broadcast in Europe, they are sped up to 25 fps (about 4%) to fit the frame rate of the PAL broadcasting. Likewise when produceing a PAL DVD: speed up to 25fps. It isn't really noticed at all.

  • Can't install OS 8 on powermac G3 - help

    Hi
I'm trying to install OS 8 on a powermac G3.
I have just got a "powermac G3 OS 8 CD" from a guy on Ebay but there are a couple of nasty scratches on the disc. I have tried to install OS 8 by doing the following but nothing has happened:
    1. Inserted CD and started computer -> get a flashing face and ?
    2. Inserted CD, held down the C key(as it says on the disc) and started computer -> get a flashing face and ?
    3. Inserted the CD after the system starts and is already displaying the flashing face and ?
A PC would have let me know what the problem is but the mac just smiles at me...help?
How can I tell if it's the disk? I did a copy on my pc which seemed to work but it behaved the same. I also ran the disc through nero cd/dvd speed 'scandisc'. It did not find any bad sectors but looking at the disc I find it hard to believe that it is readable.
Does the G3 support 7.5.3? If so where can I download a CD image?
    Thanks

If you have, literally, a beige computer marked Power Macintosh G3, whether a desktop, minitower or all-in-one, it supports no lower an OS than 8.0. This was the last OS with obligatory HFS (Standard) hard drive formatting. If the HDD of your machine had been formatted with OS 8.1 and above, which can use HFS+ (Extended) formatting, even if you were able to start up from the CD you might not have been able to see the files on the HDD. "Wherehave_all_my_filesgone?" is the message.
On the other hand, if your Mac is a blue and white tower, the least OS that it will support is 8.5.1. Be assured that Phil advised you correctly.
The display of Quizzical Floppy in place of Happy Mac illustrates only failure of the system (Startup Manager) to find a valid System Folder, and no more than that. The failure may result from:
    a) absence (physically, or through failure) of the default startup device, here the HDD or the intended startup CD. Do you get any joy from a floppy drive and DiskTools diskette (if you have a beige G3)?
    b) loss of pointers (which are preserved by the backup battery) from PRAM to a default startup device, or
    c) corrupt boot blocks on the startup device (which is what Happy Mac shows to have been found), or
    d) a corrupt or missing System Folder (which is what the boot blocks point to), or a System Folder that is temporarily unblest.
These can usually be solved, with the essential prerequisites of appropriate diskettes, or external bootable drive, and install/startup CD. What your prerequisites are or can be depends on your Mac model.
