HD Video Chatting on OS X with skype

Hey All,
HD recommended video conference camera
My Setup:
• mac mini
• macbook pro
• DVI to HDMI Connection to HD TV
Objective:
• Connect a video camera to web conference on the mac through skype.
Question:
• Which cameras have HD capability to capture individuals sitting on the couch (10 to 20 feet away)?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Any suggestion on the standard definition camcorder?
thanks
I use Sony DCR-TRV17 and DCR-TRV70, but any brand and model (even used if in working order) will do so long as it is a Mac OS X compatible mini-DV camcorder that connects via Firewire.
Some cams that offer USB webcam connection may work with Skype, but they may not work with some of Apple's older video-capable software. Therefore, it is best to stay with Firewire connection if you are concerned with maximum compatibility.

If you need a cam ONLY for Skype video, you can sort for Mac-compatible webcams at http://shop.skype.com/webcams/ if you are willing to consider webcams rather than camcorders. Skype sells these, so they must consider them to offer adequate quality.

  • Can't Video Chat or Screen Share with iMessages to iChat?

So I just recently got a new MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion to replace my white MacBook running Snow Leopard. I noticed iChat has been replaced by iMessages. All of my other Mac friends still use iChat. I didn't think this would be a huge difference, but I can no longer video chat or screen share with them.
I send them an invite, and they get an IM saying "[account] has sent you a video chat request". I'm registered under my AIM account, and so are they, so that's not the problem. When they send me invites, nothing happens. I get no notification, and it just shows "Waiting for response from [account]."
    So I thought "okay, I'll just re-download iChat from a third-party site".
The download link just takes me directly to Apple's page about Mountain Lion. So that's out.
There's no option in my security on iMessages to override this issue and allow unknown developers. I have "Allow AOL's servers to relay video chats" option selected under Privacy, and that does nothing, either.
What's the deal? Can I no longer video chat (or screen share) with "third party" chat clients via iMessages anymore?

    Hi,
I have tested my Messages (Ver 7.0.1 in OS X 10.8.2) to various versions of iChat (3, 4 and 5)
iChat 3 can send invites and open Video (Or Audio Only) chats to Messages.
The iChat 4 and 5 can Video Chat To and From Messages. (I was using AIM as I have more accounts I can play with)
I have even done 3 way Video chats in both Bonjour and AIM login using Messages and iChat 4 and 5.
I have just double checked between Messages and iChat 4 Offering the Messages Screen to the G4 (iChat 4) and I was successful.
Screen Sharing requires a Random port for the VNC connection that does the "picture" bit.
However if you had it working in iChat then this should still be working in the Messages set up.  (Basically your router is doing UPnP or is an Apple Base Station doing Port Mapping Protocol)
Also iChat will not work in Mountain Lion (even if you grab the iChat 6 version)
Each version is very specific to the OS version it is with.
For instance during OS X 10.4 it got to OS X 10.4.11 but during those same increases iChat got to  version 3.1.9
There was no update to Messages until OS X 10.8.2 making Messages version 7.0.1
Those small changes tend to mean that version 7.0 will not work with OS X 10.8.2  ( or the other way round)
It is all to do with the support apps and frameworks that help the app to work.

  • Can't video chat or screen share with one person

Hi, I can video chat and screen share with one remote colleague but not with another. When I try, I get the message 'Failed to start screen sharing because: Screen sharing could not be established' (and a similar message for video.
He has a brand-new iMac with Leopard, so there is no compatibility issue.
This would be very useful for us, can anyone suggest a solution?
    Thanks
    Phil

There are various threads on getting iChat to work with various routers. There are a couple of Support docs that talk about it, but I always have trouble finding them, now.
Use the 'more options' search function and show posts in the last year instead of the last 90 days, which I believe it defaults to.
One thing I know of is Internet Sharing cannot be turned on. Another common problem is double-NATting, where their modem is serving out addresses via NAT and the Router is sharing those out on its own NAT. You should only have one running.

  • HT2515 What happens if our video chat is not connecting with the other person?

What happens if our video chat is not connecting with the other person?

    Hi,
Not really enough info to help constructively.
    Which Version of iChat ?
Is it iChat to iChat or iChat to Messages  (i.e Mac to Mac) or AIM (iChat) to PC AIM  (needs to be a compatible version)
Is this AIM to AIM (Includes AIM valid Screen Names from certain Apple IDs) ?
Is it Jabber to Jabber (this can only be done Mac to Mac in Messages and/or iChat) ?
Do you get any failure  message ?
In the Video Menu > Connection Doctor > Errors tab do you get any info ?
    NOTES
As mentioned it is iChat to iChat or iChat to AIM on a PC if the PC has a compatible version (which is not the latest)  (where it lists iChat it also means Messages in Mountain Lion)
It has to be either AIM to AIM IDs or Jabber to Jabber IDs
It cannot be Jabber to some GoogleTalk Web Browser Login (or Facebook)
It cannot be Jabber/Google Talk to the PC app called GoogleTalk
Google released an PC only App that will use Jabber protocols for Video (Called Jingle)
Their web Browser Plug-in also uses Jingle for Video and Audio chat but iChat and Messages use SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) to connect.  The two are not compatible.
Facebook also run a  Jabber server and have apparently released their Own Plug-in  which can cause problems of it's own on a Mac.
However you also cannot video to a Web Browser Login on Mac or PC
If this is iChat 6 it does not Video on the Yahoo Accounts  (that is Text Only)
This means it cannot Video to any version of Yahoo on Mac or PC or any Web Browser method.

  • Anyone know an application for video chat on a mac with a hotmail user??

im a new macbook user and all my friends have hotmail video chat. now that i finally have a built in camera on my computer i cant talk to them. anyone know of an application i could download to do this??
ps i already tried amsn and i could only get it to work once!!
    thanks
    Jesi

I had Windows installed on my Macbook exactly for this reason ...there are no good/half-decent programs that can do what MSN Messenger natively can do.
I convinced a lot of my long distance friends to chat with me via Skype.

  • Video chat using face time with facebook video chat

I have windows 7 64 bit and ipad 2 and a mini ipad.  I have cousin in Italy who uses Facebook to video chat using her web camera on her desktop/laptop.  I would like to know if I would be able to chat with her via video if I am using Facetime on my ipad 2/mini ipad and she is using Facebook on her desktop/laptop.
Would that be possible if so, what are the steps. thanks.

FaceTime will only connect to another Apple devcie (iOS or OS  X) using an address registered via Apple ID.
You might consider Skype. I don't know if it would connect to a FaceBook video chat, but she should be able to download and use it as well.

  • Wud i able to video chat in my ipad4 by skype from abroad if i have got network connection

wud i be able to video chat by skype on my ipad 4 from abroad if i have got the network connection from local carrier.

Correct Phil. On my annual trips abroad that is the way I use my iPhone. I turn off data roaming and use WiFi only. My bills have never been any higher then they normally are that way.
In case of am emergency, I would enable data roaming and pay the charges.
Most hotels has WiFi where I have stayed, Israel, Germany, Greece, Italy and Ireland.
    To Agil123
It is my understand that if you get internet connection from local carrier, you will be charged roaming fees from your regular carrier which can be extremely costly. If you wish to use Skype only do it with WiFi to prevent roaming charges.

  • How many video chats can you use with this server?

I am looking to develop a multi-video chat app that's easy to
build. Can I use Stratus with this? Or do I need to use FMS.

none of the video streams will pass through Stratus. Stratus
only enables end-to-end streams. You are limited only by the amount
of bandwidth the client ends have as far as how many different
    streams can be flowing.
if you need to relay streams through a server (the to-many
case, or the end-to-end is blocked by firewalls or certain NAT
configurations cases), you'll need to use FMS.

  • My Video chat is not working with messages.

When someone tries to send me an invite for a video chat the green light shows up but I do not receive and invitation window to accept it.
I am using an aim account on messages and my server settings are api.oscar.aol.com, port 443, and use SSL is checked.
In connection doctor is says my router type is port restricted and that "This computer's network setup includes one or more devices that are not fully compatible with audio and video chatting. I am not sure if this is the reason my video chat is not working.
If anyone can help me please let me know.

    Hi,
Most routers can be accessed via  Web Browser.
The IP shown in System Preferences > Network > Advanced Button > TCP/IP tab in the "Router IP" box is generally the one to use.
You also tend to need a User ID and Password.
Apple Base Stations are different in that they have an App in the Utilities folder that accesses the set up screens.
Your router can have different methods of opening the ports.
    Port Forwarding
This tends to be the oldest of the methods.
Essentially you point a port to an IP (computer) to allow it.
A collection of ports may need to be entered one by one.
Once set up, only that computer can use those ports.
    Port Triggering
This cuts down the number of ports set to be Open as it involves "listening" ports that then open further ports
iChat/Messages needs some ports to be open all the time and you set these a bit like Port Forwarding but with listing the IP to send the data to.
The A/V side can have a listening port (port 5678 for the Visible part of the Invite)
The advantage is that multiple computers can use the same ports.
    DMZ (Demilitarised Zone)
This is an ON or Off setting (Enable/Disable)
It opens all the port (65535 of them) to one IP (i.e only one computer can use this.)
It is sort of like Port Forwarding Extreme
    UPnP (Universal Plug 'n' Play)
A setting that allows the App to tell the router which ports to open.
This means the router can carry on doing DHCP and multiple computer can use the ports involved.
Where these setting are varies at least as much as there are manufacturers.
This is  Linksys Port Forwarding (the arrows above the pic show the Others  (it does not show DMZ)

  • Ichat AV 4.0 Video chat through gtalk account with PC user

    Hi
I use ichat AV with my gtalk account with Yahoo transport to chat with my gtalk and yahoo buddies using a mac.
I was wondering If could video chat through my gtalk account with someone using a PC.

    Essentially No.
GoogleTalk have added AIM protocols and SIP recently but the PC users has to sign up for it.
It unclear whether this will allow Video to non GoogleTalk clients.

  • No audio with video chat, but it works with screen sharing...

I've got a friend who just upgraded to snow leopard. We're both using iMacs. My computer is working find, and I have audio and video with other people.
When we video chat, there is no audio. When I screen share with her computer, with her seeing my desktop or me seeing her desktop, the audio works.
No mute buttons are down, I've checked system preferences (sound) everything is right.
    Any ideas?

HAs she checked that System Preferences > Sound > Input is listing and has her Mic Selected ?
Is he r Volume high enough in the same place ?
In her Video Menu is the "Microphone " Enabled" ticked ?
In iChat Menu > Preferences > Video Section is the same Mic listed ?
Do the response bars move under the Preview when she talks ?
During a Chat in Your Connection Doctor (Video Menu) is she sending any Audio ?
IS she showing as having a log more Bit Rate than you ?

  • Does Skype now allow multiple video chats during c...

I was doing a Skype video call recently and I had a couple of people in the conversation.  One of the people had his web cam on and everyone else had their web cams off.  The person who had his on had some old plan or feature in place on his account that allowed for mulitple video chats in a call when Skype did not support that feature with newer accounts at the time.  All of a sudden, I saw a message appear on the screen about being able to add multiple video chats to my Skype call for free. Has Skype really gone and added the capability of multiple video conferences during a call?

Group Video Chats are now FREE.
