HD Video from Canon Elph 100 HS choppy when played on Quicktime

The HD videos (1920 X 1080, 24 fps, H.264, widescreen) that I have uploaded from my new Canon Powershot Elph 100 HS camera into iphoto library don't play smoothly at all when Quicktime plays them!!  These are .MOV files, and I have Quicktime version 10.1.  I also just upgraded to Mac OS X 10.7.3 Lion, so I don't know if this is a Lion issue or a Quicktime issue, or some other incompatibility altogether.  The videos play, but they are choppy and the frame rate seems slow.  No other programs are running in the background so I don't think it's a matter of other programs slowing it down.  How can I play the videos so that they play smoothly?  Do I need to use a different player (other than Quicktime) to play HD video?  Do I need to convert these .MOV files to some other format?  Please HELP!

I have a Canon PowerShot Elphi 100 HS and the video is jumpy, stuttery and won't play. I tried Microsoft Media player and Canon software that came with camera and Quicktime. I'm using PC not Mac. Nothing works that I've tried. I hope someone answers your question so I can have the answer as well. I think it's the camera.

  • Videos from Canon 5D Mark II Choppy

Yes, I see that another user asked a similar question today--but my circumstances are different.
The HD videos from my Canon 5D M2 come out choppy on my Dual 2.3 GHz PowerPC G5 Tower, 6 gigs of RAM, using system 10.5.8 and Quicktime 7.6.6 (1632). Video Card is ATI Radeon 9650, running a LaCie 324 at 1920 x 1200 @ 60 Hz, 32 Bit color.
They look fine on my 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Laptop, same system and Quicktime, 3 gigs of RAM, 17-inch at 1920 x 1200, GeForce 8600 GT.
In information panel, both show the same Codec: H.264 Integer (Little Endian), Dimensions: 1920 x 1080, total bit rate: 45,096.
Can anyone please say if I can do anything to improve the performance of my PowerPC tower with these videos? Thank you for your consideration and expertise!
Ancillary question: would my laptop with my LaCie 324 monitor give me enough power to edit a documentary made with same Canon 5D M2?
(The other guy who posted earlier with a similar issue said he's thinking of buying the same card as I have--once I hear some replies re: my same issue I'll contact him, to be sure).

Hi Francis, and a warm welcome to the forums!
I can't answer your question directly, but I'd try Big Endian for best PPC performance...
Intel x86 processors store a two-byte integer with the least significant byte first, followed by the most significant byte. This is called little-endian byte ordering. Other CPUs, such as the PowerPC CPU, store a two-byte integer with its most significant byte first, followed by its least significant byte. This is called big-endian byte ordering. Most of the time the endian format of your computer can be safely ignored, but in certain circumstances it becomes critically important.

  • Can't download video from Canon camera

I have a video in my Canon PowerShot SD300 Digital ELPH camera that does not download into iPhoto. I can watch the video (292mb) in my camera, and iPhoto recognizes that it is there, but does not download it. When I click to download the video, the computer behaves as if it is downloading, but the video does not appear in the library when it is done. I've tried looking for it elsewhere on my computer, but can't find it. I've thought about trying to pull it directly off the camera using the desktop, but the camera doesn't show up in the finder, only within iPhoto. How can I get this video!?

I have seen this exact behavior with large video files. You have 2 basic choices:
    1) Use Image Capture (in your Applications folder) to download the video. In IC you can select "Download Some", see the files on the camera, and select just the ones you want to download. With a file this big I recommend doing one at a time. Set it to Download to your Desktop, and be patient. Ignore the blue Progress bar, as it seems to go from 0 to 100 very quickly, when in fact the process has just begun. It may seem like nothing is happening, but wait long enough and it should complete.
    2) Canons do not appear in the Finder, as you have observed. Instead of uploading via the camera, use a USB card reader to mount the card. Then you can simply drag the video files to your Desktop. The Finder seems to copy much more quickly than Image Capture, and its blue Progress bar is much more accurate. Another advantage is that you don't have to worry about the camera's batteries dying during the download.
Either way, once the videos are on your desktop you can import them into iPhoto, then trash the desktop copy.
    Regards.

  • What are the settings for capturing video from Canon HV20

    Hi All,
I want to capture video from Canon HV20 with Premiere Elements 11. What kind of settings should I use to capture the video with full information?
    Here is what I did:
    1) According the manual, I went to Capture settings panel (Edit > Project Settings > Capture) and selected HDV as capture format, because my video is at high definition.
    2) In addition, I checked "Capture to Timeline" and "Split Scenes by cotent".
    Are these settings enough?
    Thanks.

Sounds reasonable, using Add Media/HDV Camcorder, but....
Have you reviewed the Adobe write up on Premiere Elements 11 DV and HDV capture firewire into it.
    http://help.adobe.com/fr_FR/premiereelements/using/WS5CDA0F91-60F1-4b79-ABF6-E9E75F498DB2. html#WS2AF26FB5-4C63-4c46-9DB3-7249558F6528
The mention of Get Media instead of Add Media makes me wonder if the video's instructor was demo'ing from Premiere Elements 10, but...
Major factors have always included having Premiere Elements project preset set correctly to correspond to your camera settings...For HDV data capture firewire...
NTSC HDV HDV 1080p30 or PAL HDV HDV 1080p25 depending on if you are targeting a NTSC or PAL area where frame rates are typically a consideration.
I had not done any DV or HDV data capture firewire into Premiere Elements. But, Premiere Elements 11's take over of the project preset setting would encourage me to encourage you to verify your project settings before the capture.
There are probably many more, but the following is online discussion of one Canon HV20 issue
    http://forum.videohelp.com/threads/316970-video-capture-problems-HV20-camcorder-is-control led-but-no-video-capture
If you experience difficulty with the HDV capture fireware into Premiere Elements 11, you might consider what some others have done in this regard, that is, use HDVSplit for the capture firewire and then import the split (.m2t) clips "Add Media" into Premiere Elements 11 with the appropriate HDV HDV 1080p (1440 x 1080 HD anamorphic 16:9) project preset.
Please update us on your progress when you get a chance.
    Thanks.

  • Importing video from canon zr950

i can't import video from from canon zr950 as my macbook does not have a firewire port and the usb port does not recognize video camera. any other alternatives to importing the video from mini dv?

You really do need a firewire port on your computer to import DV.
One option would be to call the store manager of a nearby Apple Store, and politely ask if you can come in and use one of his computers that has firewire to capture your movie.
If your camcorder has a feature that let's you play it on TV through RCA cables (Red, White, and Yellow) or S-Video cable, then it is possible that you could capture using the ElGato EyeTV Hybrid. However, I have not tested this, and I would hesitate to tell you to spend $100+ if I am not sure. I may have time to test it next year some time. Even if it works, it will not be at the quality of the original DV. Would the quality difference by visible? That is another thing to test.

  • Downloading avchd video from Canon XA10 to iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011)

I have a mid 2011 iMac running Mountain Lion. I typically download HD AVCHD video from my Canon XA10 camcorder by inserting an SD card from the camera into the side of the computer. When I click on the SD card, thumbnails of the video footage appear on the iMac and when I click on a thumbnail, the clip opens in Quicktime. Now I can view the clip. This is all fine.
Here's my question: when I look at the Quicktime movie inspector, the following appears:
The original footage is 1920 x 1080 since I shoot at the highest setting on the camera (MXP).
But the "Current Size:" above in the inspector is 1736 x 977.
Does Quicktime degrade the footage? Is there a way to preserve the full 1920 x 1080?
When I import the footage into iMovie (which I do directly from the chip into iMovie) is the quality degraded as well, even though the transfer into iMovie doesn't involve Quicktime (at least I don't think it does).
If, after sharing a clip from iMovie via Quicktime to create a file to upload to Vimeo, I can view it in Quicktime and the same thing happens:
The inspector says "Current Size: 1736x 977."
Any advice? Am I doing something wrong and as a result losing resolution?
    Thank you,
    David

  • How do I import video from canon zr 500 to iMovie 2011?

    Hello,
Thank you in advance for your help. I am trying to import a video from a a Canon zr500 to iMovie 2011 for a college course assignment and the camcorder is not being recognized when plugged in via firewire. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions as to how I could accomplish this as cheaply as possible? I am new to using a Mac so please don't be too technical in explanations.
    Thank you,
    Ben

    Freezeframe-
Either a Thumb Drive or an SD card in the Camera Connection Kit adapter should work.  However SFX is not a file type I'm familiar with.
How about [Volume name]\DCIS\[filename].[mp4]?  The file name must be 8 characters plus suffix.  It needs to look like it would if it had been recorded in the camera.
If that doesn't work, perhaps adding another folder will help.  A card from a Canon camera has another folder named "102___12".  That would make the path [Volume name]\DCIS\102___12\[filename].[mp4].
The more common way to transfer videos to the iPad is using iTunes that had previously synced with it.  Select Movies under LIBRARY on the left side of the iTunes window.  Then you should be able to drag the video file into that window.  The video will be transfered the next time you sync.  This way, the file name is not critical, as long as it has the correct suffix.

  • Help needed: How to import video from Canon Legria Camcorder FS306?

    Dear all,
After happily purchasing Canon Legria Camcorder FS306, I realise that my IMOVIE HD could not detect the camcorder when connected to my Macbook pro.
    Have 2 questions here:
    1. Is it impossible for IMovie HD to detect newer camcorders? Should I then upgrade to IMOVIE09?
    2. Currently, Canon Legria Camcorder FS306 is not listed as 1 of the supported camcorders for IMOVIE09. It is one of the newer models. Is IMOVIE09 able to import video from this camcorder now? Or in the near future? Or it may never be supported?
    Tks!
    Gam

You would need imovie 09 to use this camcorder.
This camcorder is not on the iMovie 09 supported list. However, every Canon camcorder since 2008 has supported iMovie 08 and 09, so odds are good that this one will, too. Odds are good that it works right now. IF you want to know for sure, call Canon. ....or take your camera to an Apple Store and hook it up.
It might be possible to do some manual conversions and continue to use iMovie 6. For example, you could try converting the MPEG2 files to DV using a tool like MPEG Streamclip. You would also need the $20 Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component. I find iMovie 09 to be a much better editor, but if you are comfortable with iMovie 06, this might be worth a try for you.

  • How to import video from canon xa10

I can import video file from canon xa-10 camcorder to Final Cut Pro X. Please help.

I have an XA10 and do this all the time.
As Tom said, you just need to connect the camera using the USB cable and then do an "Import from Camera" from within FCPX.
And yes, once you choose which clips (or which portions of clips) you want to import and then close the import window, FCPX has to transcode them.  However, you can begin editing while it is working on transcoding the files.
However, if you disconnect the camera before FCPX has finished the transcode, the media won't be there the next time.  This stuff isn't magic.  It still has to transcode.  The only "magic" of FCPX is that you can start editing the footage before the transcode is complete...assuming, of course, you leave the media connected.
Copying files over first and then trying to import does not work.  You have to do it from the camera.
The difference would be if you were recording to an SD card (which the XA10 will do), instead of the camera's built-in flash memory.  You can disconnect the camera and just connect a card reader (and the card, of course).  But the same principle would apply.  You could start editing while FCPX is transcoding, but don't expect it to all be there if you disconnect the card reader or shut down FCPX before finishing the transcoding process.
    Hope that helps.

  • Can someone help with importing video from Canon XA10 (AVCHD) into PE 11?

In PE 11 when I import video from my canon xa10 (avchd) the quality is terrible, I also have a canon xa20, 60D and gopro that I video with and they all turn out with great video quality.  Is there a reason why the xa10 video quality is bad? Setting I need to change?

    Thanks for the follow up.
In Premiere Elements 11 and 12 takes over setting the project preset based on the properties of the first file drag to the Timeline. Sometimes it does it right; sometimes not. You can check what the project has set by using the readings from Edit Menu/Project Settings/General and the readings for Editing Mode, Timebase, Frame Size, and Pixel Aspect Ratio even if the fields look grayed out. If the project preset is set for NTSC AVCHD Full HD1080p30, then the Edit Menu/Project Settings/General should be as represented in the following screenshot
Please refer to setting the project preset yourself manually and then importing the source media into the project.
